Fluid flow through fractured rock masses is a key process controlling the safety and performance of deep geoengineering systems, shaped by the complex interactions of thermal, hydraulic, mechanical and chemical(THMC)fields. This paper presents a systematic review of this subject with special emphasis on the multi-physics governing it.First,we elucidate the interdependent mechanisms and governing equations, highlighting the nonlinear,path-dependent,and evolving nature of the relationship between stress and permeability.Next, mainstream modeling approaches, including equivalent continuum, discrete fracture network(DFN),and dual-porosity/dual-permeability methods, are critically evaluated, and a strategy for model selection based on project scale and geological context is proposed accordingly. Moreover, experimental insights from single-fracture and triaxial flow studies are synthesized, revealing how effective stress, shear displacement, and fracture roughness control permeability evolution. In particular, the practical significance of THMC coupling is demonstrated through case studies on nuclear waste disposal,Enhanced Geothermal Systems, and tunneling projects. The reviewfurther explores AI-and machine learning-driven innovations, particularly physics-informed neural networks and hybrid modeling, which address limitations in computational efficiency, data scarcity, and physical consistency. Finally, persistent challenges, including multi-scale coupling, parameter uncertainty, and complex fracture network representation are identified and critically discussed while paying attention to future developments. 展开更多

The links between the adakitic rocks and Cu-Au mineralization have long been argued. This study investigates petrogenesis and its link to mineralization potential by a series of in-situ geochronological and geochemical signatures of apatite and zircon in three ore-related intrusions and one-barren intrusion in the Middle-Lower Yangtze River Metallogenic Belt(MLYRB).Zircon U-Pb dating yield ages of 139–143 Ma and 121 Ma for the ore-related and ore-barren intrusions, respectively. The ore-related rocks have higher apatite Sr/Y(1.57–9.69),(La/Yb)_(N)(16.7–159.5),andδEu(0.45–0.74)than the ore-barren rocks of 0.57–1.02,19.3–24.1 and 0.40–0.45,respectively,indicating the former has an adakitic affinity, while the latter has a non-adakitic affinity. The ore-related rocks have enriched zircon Hf isotopes withε_(Hf)(t)values of-15.9 to-5.5 and T_(DMC)ages of 2408–1655 Ma and apatite Sr-Nd isotopes, indicating that the ore-related magmas were mainly originated from partial melting of subducted oceanic crust. The orebarren rocks have higherε_(Hf)(t)values of-6.6 to-4.6 and lower T_(DMC)ages of 1598–1469 Ma and apatite Sr-Nd isotopes, indicating a lithospheric mantle source. The ore-related rocks have higher oxygen fugacity of mean∆FMQ+2.00 and X_(F)/X_(OH)of 8.36–175 than the ore-barren rocks of mean∆FMQ+1.43 and3.72–4.96.It was inferred that magma source, water content, and oxygen fugacity emerge as critical factors governing the regional Cu-Au mineralization potential. 展开更多

The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationships between results of index tests and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) in hydrothermally altered soft rocks of the Upper Miocene, which are typical of the soft rock found in northeastern Hokkaido, Japan. Index tests were performed using point load testing machine and needle penetrometer with irregular lump specimens under forced-dry, forced-wet, and natural-moist states. The relationships between irregular lump point load strength (IPLS) index and UCS, and needle penetration (NP) index and UCS were “UCS = approximately 19 IPLS index” and “UCS = 0.848 (NP index)0.619”, respectively, in soft rocks with a UCS below 25 MPa. These relationships could be applied to on-site tests of rocks with natural moisture content. The UCS could be calculated from IPLS and NP tests on soft rocks only when UCS was below 25 MPa, using the equations obtained as a result of this study. 展开更多

Continental rifting developed in Hercynian period (P 2, 260~250Ma) accompany with a series of basic\|ultrabasic rocks. Various in lithologies, such as layered intrusions (V\|Ti\|Fe formation), small\|sized mafic\|ultramafic bodies (stocks) and large\|scale basalt (Emeishan Basalt) are constituted of a complete melanocratic rock system. Most of Cu\|Ni\|PGE sulfide deposits are related to small\|sized ultramafic rock bodies. It is a perfect possibility for them to be an affinity of basic eruptive lava and for the neck facies. But in ① Panzhihua\|Center Yunnan Province, the Gaojiacun, also Jinbaoshan, as large stratiform basic\|ultrabasic complex used to be thought that is older one intruded to basement rocks in Precambrian. However, new evidences suggest it is similar with the small\|sized ultramafic rock bodies containing Cu\|Ni\|PGE, and also the both are affinity of the Emeishan Basalt; ② Miyi district, Cu\|Pt mineralization was discovered in the Xinjie bedded basic complex, and in where ophitic olivine\|pyroxenite\|peridotite facies are exactly Pt\|bearing layers; ③ Longzhoushan district, we have recently researched basic\|ultrabasic clusters which intruded into fracture zones, and Cu\|Ni\|Pt, Pd mineralization developed at the salbands.Generally, the basalt is poor in PGE and rich in Cu. It is suggested as the result of PGE dispersion\|concentration processing in the melanocratic rock system when rifting happened. 展开更多

In complex geological environments, the analysis of drill cores to determine rock strength can be challenging due to the wide variability in the degree of fracturing, leading to subjectivity in the collection of representative samples for uniaxial compressive strength testing. This study evaluates non-destructive techniques on calcareous rocks with different tectonic deformations, including Equotip hardness, ultrasound P-wave velocity, thin section analysis, and calcimetry, integrated with photogrammetric fracture analysis. The investigated carbonate rock samples are sourced from drill cores derived from the Umbria-Marche fold and thrust belt(northern Apennines,Italy),including a gently dipping limb of an anticline,a hinge zone of an anticline, and a fault zone associated with a thrust.Fracture intensity, quantified by the P21 parameter using photogrammetric techniques on pre-loading rock samples,is assessed alongside macroscopic identification of discontinuities(such as stylolites, veins, and joints)using marker colours to monitor failures during uniaxial compression testing.Empirical correlations depicted by single and multi-linear relationships indicate a strong dependence between the mechanical and physical properties of limestones. Both Equotip and P-wave velocity are influenced by fracture intensity, but P-wave velocity varies significantly with discontinuity orientation, especially at 45°-90°.To refine uniaxial compressive strength predictions and mitigate multicollinearity, statistical approaches, including linear and multilinear regression,Principal Component Analysis and Gaussian Process Regression, were tested.Findings improve the reliability of non-destructive techniques for assessing rock strength in structurally complex settings, with implications for geotechnical applications. 展开更多

Based on well logging and seismic data, combined with a comparative analysis of drilling data in the Lower Yangtze region, the sequence stratigraphic framework of the Qinglong Formation was established and divided into four third-order sequences. Each sequence is mainly composed of the transgress system tract (TST) and the high-stand system tract (HST). According to the lithology, logging curve and seismic reflection structure, the sedimentary filling characteristics and evolution law for the sequence are analyzed. The results show that each sequence is dominated by a half-cycle decline of sea level, and the rise-fall of sea level controls the distribution and evolution of sedimentary systems within the sequence. During the relative sea-level rise, sedimentation rates slow down and muddy sediments are developed. The characteristics of condensing intervals on the flooding surface are very obvious, and continental shelf and open platform deposition are mainly developed. During the relative decline of sea level, the thickness of sediments increased. The main developments were restricted platform and platform shoal environment, and locally developed evaporation platform environment. 展开更多

A scientific exploration well(CK1) was drilled to expand the oil/gas production in the western Sichuan depression, SW, China. Seventy-three core samples and four natural gas samples from the Middle–Late Triassic strata were analyzed to determine the paleo-depositional setting and the abundance of organic matter(OM) and to evaluate the hydrocarbon-generation process and potential. This information was then used to identify the origin of the natural gas. The OM is characterized by medium n-alkanes(n C15–n C19), low pristane/phytane and terrigenous aquatic ratios(TAR), a carbon preference index(CPI) of ~1, regular steranes with C29 > C27 > C28, gammacerane/C30 hopane ratios of 0.15–0.32, and δDorg of-132‰ to-58‰, suggesting a marine algal/phytoplankton source with terrestrial input deposited in a reducing–transitional saline/marine sedimentary environment. Based on the TOC, HI index, and chloroform bitumen "A" the algalrich dolomites of the Leikoupo Formation are fair–good source rocks;the grey limestones of the Maantang Formation are fair source rocks;and the shales of the Xiaotangzi Formation are moderately good source rocks. In addition, maceral and carbon isotopes indicate that the kerogen of the Leikoupo and Maantang formations is type Ⅱ and that of the Xiaotangzi Formation is type Ⅱ–Ⅲ. The maturity parameters and the hopane and sterane isomerization suggest that the OM was advanced mature and produced wet–dry gases. One-dimensional modeling of the thermal-burial history suggests that hydrocarbon-generation occurred at 220–60 Ma. The gas components and C–H–He–Ar–Ne isotopes indicate that the oilassociated gases were generated in the Leikoupo and Maantang formations, and then, they mixed with gases from the Xiaotangzi Formation, which were probably contributed by the underlying Permian marine source rocks. Therefore, the deeply-buried Middle–Late Triassic marine source rocks in the western Sichuan depression and in similar basins have a great significant hydrocarbon potential. 展开更多

Based on the analysis of outcrop, seismic, logging and drilling data, combined with exploration practice, the characteristics, distribution, reservoir performance and gas-bearing properties of Permian igneous rocks in Sichuan Basin are studied. The study shows that central volcanic eruptive facies are developed in Sichuan Basin, and their lithological assemblages and distribution characteristics show obvious differences. The igneous rocks are mainly distributed in three regions: the southwestern part of the basin has dominantly largescale overflow facies basalts; the central and western part of the basin, Jianyang-Santai area, develop intrusive rocks, volcanic lavas(basalts)and pyroclastic rocks; and the eastern part of Sichuan, Dazhou-Liangping area, only develop diabase and basalts. Five aspects of understandings are achieved:(1) The Upper Permian igneous rocks can be divided into intrusive rocks and extrusive rocks, with the extrusive rocks as the main body. The chemical compositions of the extrusive rocks are characterized by both alkaline basalt and tholeiitic basalt, and belong to the subalkaline type of transitional basalt magma eruption.(2) There are obvious rhythmic structures vertically among overflow facies basalt, and the single rhythmic layer consists of, from bottom up, pyroclastic rocks(undeveloped), gray and dark gray porphyritic basalts(unstable), dark gray and purple microcrystalline-cryptocrystalline basalts, dark greyish green porous and amygdaloid basalts; the central volcanic eruption shows the rhythm and the vertical sequence of volcanic clastic rocks(agglomerates and breccias), volcanic lava, tuffaceous lava from bottom to top.(3) The pore types of basalt and pyroclastic rocks are diverse, mainly dissolution pore and de-vitrification micropore, but their physical properties are different. Basalt is characterized by ultra-low pore permeability, small reservoir thickness, and reservoirs are distributed in the upper and middle parts of the cycle, with poor lateral comparability. Volcanic clastic rocks are medium to high porous reservoirs(Well YT1: porosity: 8.66%?16.48%, average 13.76%) with large thickness and good reservoir quality.(4) Natural gas in basalts in southwestern basin mainly comes from Middle Permian, and natural gas in volcanic clastic rocks in central and western basin comes from Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation.(5) Analysis of igneous reservoir-forming conditions in different areas shows that there are relatively insufficient gas sources and great differences in preservation conditions in southwestern basin.Reservoirs are poorly developed and gas-bearing is complex. The Jianyang-Santai area in the central and western part of Sichuan Basin has abundant hydrocarbon sources, developed reservoir, favorable preservation conditions and favorable gas geological conditions, and it is a favorable area for gas exploration. 展开更多

The Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt within the North China Craton had undergone a complex tectonic evolution, marked by extensive Paleoproterozoic magmatism that produced a diverse range of mafic to felsic magmatic rocks. These events provide valuable geological records for understanding the tectonic evolution of the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt. This study focuses on the Paleoproterozoic Chibaisong meta-gabbro in southern Jilin, investigating the source of mafic magma, petrogenesis, and tectonic setting through systematic petrological analysis, zircon U-Pb dating, and geochemical studies. The findings contribute to constraining the dynamic mechanisms of Paleoproterozoic extensional rifting in the Jiao-Liao-Ji orogenic belt.Geochemical data indicate that the samples exhibit low SiO₂(47.99–50.66 wt.%),TiO₂(0.75–3.20 wt.%),Nb(3.22–8.09 ppm),and Ta(0.22–0.51 ppm)contents, along with high TFeO₃(11.97–15.82 wt.%)and MgO(5.67–12.66 wt.%)concentrations.They also show low Nb/La ratios and high(Th/Nb)N values, consistent with the geochemical characteristics of tholeiitic basalts. The samples display low total rare earth element concentrations, weak or absent Eu anomalies, slight enrichment in light rare earth elements, relatively flat heavy rare earth element patterns, and depletion in Nb,Ta,and Ti.The meta-gabbro from southern Jilin exhibits geochemical similarities to Paleoproterozoic metamafic rocks from other regions of the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt, resembling enriched mid-ocean ridge basalts(E-MORB)with Nb,Ta,and Ti depletion.Integration of previous studies and geochemical data suggests that the 2.16–2.10 Ga metamafic rocks in the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt experienced contamination by older crustal material. These results indicate that the 2.16–2.10 Ga metamafic rocks are unlikely to be associated with island arc, continental arc,or mid-ocean ridge settings.Instead, they are more likely related to intraplate magmatism associated with continental rifting. 展开更多

The Naga Hills Ophiolite(NHO) represents one of the fragments of Tethyan oceanic crust in the Himalayan Orogenic system which is exposed in the Phek and Kiphire districts of Nagaland, India. The NHO is composed of partially serpentinized dunite, peridotite, gabbro, basalt, minor plagiogranite, diorite dyke and marine sediments. The basalts are mainly composed of fine grained plagioclase feldspar, clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene and show quenching and variolitic textures. The gabbros are characterized by medium to coarse grained plagioclase, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene with ophitic to sub-ophitic textures. The ultramafic cumulates are represented by olivine, Cpx and Opx.Geochemically, the basalts and gabbros are sub-alkaline to alkaline and show tholeiitic features. The basalts are characterized by 44.1-45.6 wt.% of SiO_2 with 28-38 of Mg#, and the gabbros by38.7-43.7 wt.% of SiO_2, and 26-79 of Mg#. The ultramafic rocks are characterized by 37.4-52.2 wt.% of SiO_2, and 80-88 of Mg#. In multi-element diagrams(spidergrams) both basalts and gabbros show fractionated trends with strong negative anomalies of Zr. Nb. Sr and a gentle negative anomaly of P.However, the rare earth element(REE) plots of the basalts and gabbros show two distinct patterns. The first pattern, represented by light REE(LREE) depletion, suggests N-MORB features and can be interpreted as a signature of Paleo-Tethyan oceanic crust. The second pattern, represented by LREE enrichment with negligible negative Eu anomaly, conforms to E-MORB, and may be related to an arc tectonic setting. In V vs. Ti/1000, Cr vs. Y and AFM diagrams, the basalts and gabbros plot within Island Arc Tholeiite(IAT) and MORB fields suggesting both ridge and arc related settings. The ultramafic rocks exhibit two distinct patterns both in spidergrams and in REE plots. In the spidergram, one group displays highly enriched pattern, whereas the other group shows near flat pattern compared to primordial mantle. In the REE plot, one group displays steeper slopes [(La/Yb)N = 4.340-4.341], whereas the other displays moderate to flat slopes [(La/Yb)N = 0.97-1.67] and negative Eu-anomalies. Our study suggests that the ultramafic rocks represent two possible mantle sources(fertile and refractory). 展开更多

This study investigated the heterogeneous responses of organic matter(OM)in highly-to over-mature source rocks during thermal maturation. An integrated analysis was conducted on the Raman spectroscopic and geochemical signatures of shales from the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation and the Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation,as well as anthracites from the Lower Permian Shanxi–Formation and the Upper Carboniferous Taiyuan Formation(collectively referred to as the Shanxi Taiyuan Formations).Additionally, burial and thermal evolution modeling was employed to support the analysis.A systematic assessment of Raman spectral parameters(e.g.,the positions and intensity ratio of the D and G bands)revealed robust correlations between the thermal history patterns of source rocks and molecular structural evolution parameters. The subsequent mechanistic quantification demonstrated that the maturation state of the source rocks was subjected to the hierarchical control of three principal factors:Peak heating temperature, the duration of sustained thermal intensity, and effective maturation duration. In addition, comparative analyses demonstrated that the anthracites attained higher structural ordering under sustained thermal conditions. This contrasts with the disordered carbon matrices observed in the intermittently heated shales.Raman spectroscopy further revealed broader variations in the D and G band intensities of the Longmaxi Formation compared to the Qiongzhusi Formation. This difference is associated with their different thermal histories. The thermal burial histories confirm that shales in the Longmaxi Formation underwent thermal exposure at lower peak temperatures over a shorter duration compared to those in the Qiongzhusi Formation. Finally, this study established a maturity calibration model for over-mature source rocks through a systematic correlation between Raman peak height ratios(R_(D/G))and vitrinite reflectance(R_(o)). 展开更多

Rocks are increasingly used in extreme environments characterised by high loading rates and high confining pressures. Thus the fracture properties of rocks under dynamic loading and confinements are critical in various rock mechanics and rock engineering problems.Due to the transient nature of dynamic loading, the dynamic fracture tests of rocks are much more challenging than their static counterparts.Understanding the dynamic fracture behaviour of geomaterials relies significantly on suitable and reliable dynamic fracture testing methods. One of such methods is the notched semi-circle bend(NSCB)test combined with the advanced split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)system, which has been recommended by the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering(ISRM)as the standard method for the determination of dynamic fracture toughness. The dynamic NSCB-SHPB method can provide detailed insights into dynamic fracture properties including initiation fracture toughness, fracture energy, propagation fracture toughness and fracture velocity. This review aims to fully describe the detailed principles and state-of-the-art applications of dynamic NSCB-SHPB techniques. The history and principles of dynamic NSCB-SHPB tests for rocks are outlined, and then the applications of dynamic NSCB-SHPB method(including the measurements of initiation and propagation fracture toughnesses and the limiting fracture velocity, the size effect and the digital image correlation(DIC)experiments)are discussed.Further, other applications of dynamic NSCB-SHPB techniques(i.e.the thermal, moisture and anisotropy effects on the dynamic fracture properties of geomaterials, and dynamic fracture toughness of geomaterials under pre-loading and hydrostatic pressures)are presented. 展开更多

This work presents zircon U–Pb age and wholerock geochemical data for the volcanic rocks from the Lakang Formation in the southeastern Tethyan Himalaya and represents the initial activity of the Kerguelen mantle plume. SHRIMP U–Pb dating of zircons from the volcanic rocks yielded a ^(206) Pb/^(238) U age of 147 ± 2 Ma that reflects the time of Late Jurassic magmatism. Whole rock analyses of major and trace elements show that the volcanic rocks are characterized by high content of Ti O_2(2.62 wt%–4.25 wt%) and P_2O_5(0.38 wt%–0.68 wt%), highly fractionated in LREE/HREE [(La/Yb)N= 5.35–8.31] with no obvious anomaly of Eu, and HFSE enrichment with no obvious anomaly of Nb and Ta, which are similar to those of ocean island basalts and tholeiitic basaltic andesites indicating a mantle plume origin. The Kerguelen mantle plume produced a massive amount of magmatic rocks from Early Cretaceous to the present, which widely dispersed from their original localities of emplacement due to the changing motions of the Antarctic, Australian, and Indian plates. However, our new geochronological and geochemical results indicate that the Kerguelen mantle plume started from the Late Jurassic. Furthermore, we suggest that the Kerguelen mantle plume may played a significant role in the breakup of eastern Gondwanaland according to the available geochronological, geochemical and paleomagnetic data. 展开更多

The Solonker suture zone has long been considered to mark the location of the final disappearance of the PaleoAsian Ocean in the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt(CAOB). However, the time of final suturing is still controversial with two main different proposals of late Permian to early Triassic, and late Devonian. This study reports integrated wholerock geochemistry and LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb ages of sedimentary rocks from the Silurian Xuniwusu Formation, the Devonian Xilingol Complex and the Permian Zhesi Formation in the Hegenshan-Xilinhot-Linxi area in central Inner Mongolia, China. The depositional environment, provenance and tectonic setting of the Silurian-Devonian and the Permian sediments are compared to constrain the tectonic evolution of the Solonker suture zone and its neighboring zones. The protoliths of the silty slates from the Xuniwusu Formation in the Baolidao zone belong to wacke and were derived from felsic igneous rocks with steady-state weathering, poor sorting and compositional immaturity. The protoliths of metasedimentary rocks from the Xilingol Complex were wackes and litharenites and were sourced from predominantly felsic igneous rocks with variable weathering conditions and moderate sorting. The Xuniwusu Formation and Xilingol Complex samples both have two groups of detrital zircon that peak at ca. 0.9-1.0 Ga and ca. 420-440 Ma, with maximum deposition ages of late Silurian and middle Devonian age, respectively. Considering the ca. 484-383 Ma volcanic arc in the Baolidao zone, the Xuxiniwu Formation represents an oceanic trench sediment and is covered by the sedimentary rocks in the Xilingol Complex that represents a continental slope sediment in front of the arc. The middle Permian Zhesi Formation metasandstones were derived from predominantly felsic igneous rocks and are texturally immature with very low degrees of rounding and sorting, indicating short transport and rapid burial. The Zhesi Formation in the Hegenshan zone has a main zircon age peak of 302 Ma and a subordinate peak of 423 Ma and was deposited in a back-arc basin with an early marine transgression during extension and a late marine regression during contraction. The formation also crops out locally in the Baolidao zone with a main zircon age peak of 467 Ma and a minor peak of 359 Ma, and suggests it formed as a marine transgression sedimentary sequence in a restricted extensional basin and followed by a marine regressive event. Two obvious zircon age peaks of 444 Ma and 280 Ma in the Solonker zone and 435 Ma and 274 Ma in Ondor Sum are retrieved from the Zhesi Formation. This suggests as a result of the gradual closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean a narrow ocean sedimentary environment with marine regressive sedimentary sequences occupied the Solonker and Ondor Sum zones during the middle Permian. A restricted ocean is suggested by the Permian strata in the Bainaimiao zone. Early Paleozoic subduction until ca. 381 Ma and renewed subduction during ca. 310-254 Ma accompanied by the opening and closure of a back-arc basin during ca. 298-269 Ma occurred in the northern accretionary zone. In contrast, the southern accretionary zone documented early Paleozoic subduction until ca. 400 Ma and a renewed subduction during ca. 298-246 Ma. The final closure of the Paleo-Asian ocean therefore lasted at least until the early Triassic and ended with the formation of the Solonker suture zone. 展开更多

The presence of shale oil in the Cretaceous Hengtongshan Formation in the Tonghua Basin, drilled by the well TD-01, has been discussed in this geological investigation for the first time. To evaluate the high-quality source rocks of Cretaceous continental shale oil, the distribution characteristics and the evolution of the ancient environment, samples of shale were systematically analyzed in terms of sedimentary facies, organic geochemistry, and organic carbon isotopic composition. The results demonstrate that a TOC value of 1.5% represents the lower-limit TOC value of the high-quality source rocks. Source rocks have an aggregate thickness of 211 m and contain abundant organic matter, with TOC values of 2.69% on average and a maximum value over 5.44%. The original hydrocarbon-generative potential value(S_1+S_2) is between 0.18 mg/g and 6.13 mg/g, and the Ro is between 0.97% and 1.40%. The thermal maturation of the source rocks is relatively mature to highly mature. The δ^(13)C value range is between -34.75‰ and -26.53‰. The ratio of saturated hydrocarbons to aromatic hydrocarbons is 1.55 to 5.24, with an average of 2.85, which is greater than 1.6. The organic types are mainly type Ⅱ_1, followed by type Ⅰ. The organic carbon source was C_3 plants and hydrophytes. The paleoclimate of the Hengtongshan Formation can be characterized as hot and dry to humid, and these conditions were conducive to the development of high-quality source rocks. A favorable paleoenvironment and abundant organic carbon sources provide a solid hydrocarbon generation base for the formation and accumulation of oil and gas in the shale of the Tonghua Basin. 展开更多

This paper introduces a new methodology to measure the elastic constants of transversely isotropic rocks from a single uniaxial compression test.We first give the mathematical proof that a uniaxial compression test provides only four independent strain equations. As a result, the exact determination of all five independent elastic constants from only one test is not possible. An approximate determination of the Young’s moduli and the Poisson’s ratios is however practical and efficient when adding the Saint-Venant relation as the fifth equation.Explicit formulae are then developed to calculate both secant and tangent definitions of the five elastic constants from a minimum of four strain measurements. The results of this new methodology applied on three granitic samples demonstrate a significant stress-induced nonlinear behavior, where the tangent moduli increase by a factor of three to four when the rock is loaded up to 20 MPa.The static elastic constants obtained from the uniaxial compression test are also found to be significantly smaller than the dynamic ones obtained from the ultrasonic measurements. 展开更多

Beach rock, which forms at the intertidal zone,is a natural barrier to protect beach and island from wave erosion. The formation mechanism of beach rocks is significant in the study of surface carbonate diagenesis and protection of island. Beach rocks in Qilian Islets and Cays were formed about 500–700 a BP,neither its composition nor sedimentary structure experienced intense post-reformation.Beach rocks in Qilian Islets and Cays are mainly composed of reef-building skeletal fragments and bioclasts without terrigenous sediments. This study focused on the types and morphologies of cements in beach rocks of Qilian Islets and Cays, and its cementation mechanisms and influencing factors. Biological activities, such as micritization caused by microbial activities and algae binding action, play an important role in the initial stage of bioclast transformation and promote the subsequent early marine and early meteoric cementation. Acicular aragonite induced by early marine cementation is well developed in beach rocks, especially in those samples from Medium Islet. Early meteoric cementation is not common as marine cementation, generally presenting granular and meniscus cements. The main factors affecting the formation and development of beach rocks in Qilian Islets and Cays include sediment source, hydrodynamic condition, climate, sea level change and anthropogenic impacts. 展开更多

To determine the effect of dissolution on pore network development in carbonate rocks, dissolution experiments, X-Ray microtomography, and thin section analysis were conducted on argillaceous limestone and grain limestone samples at different temperatures and constant pH, HCl concentration. The relationship between Ca^(2+) concentration and time was revealed through the experiments; pore size distribution before and after dissolution indicate that there is no correlation between the temperature and pore size variation, but pore size variation in grain limestone is more significant, indicating that the variation is mainly controlled by the heterogeneity of the rock itself(initial porosity and permeability) and the abundance of unstable minerals(related to crystal shape, size and mineral type). At different temperatures, the two kinds of carbonate rocks had very small variation in pore throat radius from 0.003 mm to 0.040 mm, which is 1.3 to 3.5 times more, 1.7 on average of the original pore throat radius. Their pore throat length varied from 0.05 mm to 0.35 mm. The minor changes in the pore throat radius, length and connectivity brought big changes to permeability of up to 1 000×10^(-3) μm^2. 展开更多

Detailed mineralogy, bulk rock major, trace and Sr-Nd isotope compositions, and ^(40)Ar/^(39)Ar dating of the Pipe-8 diamondiferous ultramafic intrusion in the Wajrakarur cluster of southern India,is reported.Based on the presence of Ti-rich phlogopite, high Na/K content in amphibole,Al-and Ti-rich diopside,a titanomagnetite trend in spinel and the presence of Ti-rich schorlomite garnet and carbonates in the groundmass, the Pipe-8 intrusion is here more precisely classified as an ultramafic lamprophyre(i.e.,aillikite).An aillikite affinity of the Pipe-8 intrusion is further supported by the bulk rock major and trace element and Sr-Nd isotope geochemistry.Sr-Nd isotope data are consistent with a common, moderately depleted upper mantle source region for both the Pipe-8 aillikite as well as the Wajrakarur kimberlites of southern India.A phlogopite-rich groundmass ^(40)Ar/^(39)Ar plateau age of 1115.8±7.9 Ma(2σ) for the Pipe-8 intrusion falls within a restricted 100 Ma time bracket as defined by the 1053-1155 Ma emplacement ages of kimberlites and related rocks in India. The presence of ultramafic lamprophyres, carbonatites, kimberlites, and olivine lamproites in the Wajrakarur kimberlite field requires low degrees of partial melting of contrasting metasomatic assemblages in a heterogeneous sub-continental lithospheric mantle. The widespread association of kimberlite and other mantle-derived magmatism during the Mesoproterozoic(ca.1.1 Ga) have been interpreted as being part of a single large igneous province comprising of the Kalahari,Australian,West Laurentian and Indian blocks of the Rodinia supercontinent that were in existence during its assembly. In India only kimberlite/lamproite/ultramafic lamprophyre magmatism occurred at this time without the associated large igneous provinces as seen in other parts of Rodinia. This may be because of the separated paleo-latitudinal position of India from Australia during the assembly of Rodinia. It is speculated that the presence of a large plume at or close to 1.1 Ga within the Rodinian supercontinent, with the Indian block located on its periphery, could be the reason for incipient melting of lithospheric mantle and the consequent emplacement of only kimberlites and other ultramafic, volatile rich rocks in India due to comparatively low thermal effects from the distant plume. 展开更多
