As a cathode material for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), manganese-based layered oxides have attracted widespread attention due to their low cost, ease of synthesis, and high performance. However, the Jahn-Teller effect caused by Mn3+ and the irreversible phase transformation of the structure leads to poor cycle stability, limiting the development of layered oxides in PIBs. Herein, we demonstrate the use of phase-transition-free CaTiO_(3) as rivets in K_(0.5)Mn_(0.9)Ti_(0.1)O_(2) by a simple solid-state method. As verified by the in situ X-ray diffraction, the CaTiO_(3) rivets effectively prevent the slippage of the transition metal layer during charge and discharge, inhibiting structural degradation. As a result, the obtained K_(0.5)Mn_(0.9)Ti_(0.1)O_(2)-0.02CaTiO_(3) shows excellent cycling stability and rate performance, with high capacities of 119.3 and 70.1 mAh·g^(-1) at 20 and 1000 mA·g^(-1), respectively. At 200 mA·g^(-1), the capacity retention remains 94.7% after more than 300 cycles. This work represents a new avenue for designing and optimizing layered cathode materials for PIBs and other batteries. 展开更多

This study introduces electromagnetic dynamic self-piercing riveting(ED-SPR),an innovative technique that integrates electromagnetic riveting principles with static self-piercing riveting(S-SPR)for highperformance structural joints.A dedicated methodology and experimental apparatus for ED-SPR were systematically designed and validated.Quantitative comparative analyses between ED-SPR and S-SPR were conducted on three critical material combinations:CFRP/Al,low-strength steel HC340 LA/Al,and high-strength steel DP590/Al.Key findings demonstrate that the electromagnetic-driven process reduces installation resistance by 60%and achieves a 30%larger interlock distance at the joint base compared to S-SPR.These quantitative advantages directly contribute to an approximately 30%increase in load-bearing capacity and superior damage tolerance in ED-SPR joints,as evidenced by tensile-shear testing of single-lap joints.Furthermore, distinct failure modes were observed:ED-SPR joints exhibited top plate pull-out failure in CFRP/Al and DP590/Al configurations, contrasting with the predominant rivet pull-out failure in S-SPR counterparts.Surface morphology and damage evolution were characterized via scanning electron microscopy(SEM)on post-assembly and tensile-failed specimens. The study establishes a foundation for optimizing electromagnetic-driven riveting parameters to mitigate CFRP delamination and further enhance joint reliability in vehicle body and aircraft fuselage structures. 展开更多

Dispersing metals from nanoparticles to clusters is often achieved using ligand protection methods, which exhibit unique properties such as suppressing structure-sensitive side reactions. However, this method is limited by the use of different metal precursor salts corresponding to different ligands. An alternative approach, the ion exchange(IE)method, can overcome this limitation to some extent.Nevertheless, there is still an urgent need to address the stabilization of metals(especially precious metals)by using IE method. Here,we reported a Pt cluster catalyst prepared mainly by anchoring Pt atoms via O located near the framework Zn in zincosilicate zeolites and riveted by zeolite surface rings after reduction(reduced Pt/Zn-3-IE).The catalyst can achieve an initial propane conversion of 26%in a pure propane atmosphere at 550℃and shows little deactivation even after 7.5 d of operation. Moreover, the alteration of catalyst by the introduction of framework Zn was also highlighted and interpreted. 展开更多

Multi-layer riveted structures are widely applied to aircraft.During the service, cracks may appear within these structures due to stress concentration of the riveted holes. The guided wave monitoring has been proved to be an effective tool to deal with this problem. However, there is a lack of understanding of the wave propagation process across such kinds of structures. This study proposes a piezoelectric guided wave simulation method to reveal the propagation of guided waves in multi-layer riveted structures.Effects of pretension force, friction coefficient, and cracks that might influence wave characteristics are studied. The guided wave simulation data is compared with the experimental results and the results verify the simulation model. Then the guided wave propagation in a more complex long-beam butt joint structure is further simulated. 展开更多

The development and application of large Die⁃Casting Al Alloy(DCAA)parts and Thermo⁃Formed Steel Sheets(TFSS)in Body⁃in⁃White(BIW)have created higher demands for the joining technology of high⁃strength steel/Al dissimilar materials. As an emerging technology,Flush Self⁃Piercing Riveting(FSPR)is still in the experimental phase and undergoing small batch equipment verification. This paper focuses on the joining methods for DCAA and TFSS in BIW,investigating the joining mechanisms, technical features, and forming principles of FSPR for steel/Al dissimilar materials with two⁃layer or three⁃layer plate combinations.Considering the TL4225/C611/CR5 sheet combination as a subject, the forming mechanism of high⁃quality joints was studied, and a physical and mathematical model was established to depict the relationship between the filling amount of the arc⁃gap and die dimensions,as well as the extrusion amount. This model effectively illustrates the relationship between the filling amount of the flowing metal in the arc⁃gap and critical parameters, such as die dimensions and feeding amounts.By simplifying the process of selecting joining parameters,it significantly reduces both the time and experimental workload associated with parameter selection. This provides a technical foundation for the application of DAAA and TFSS parts in BIW,enabling the rapid choice of appropriate joining parameters to meet the requirements for obtaining high⁃quality joints. The model can be effectively utilized to investigate the relationships between key parameters, including arc⁃gap radius, plate thickness, rivet arc radius, nail head radius, groove width, and feeding amount, while keeping other parameters constant. This approach provides a theoretical foundation for the design of Friction Stir Processing(FSP)joints and aids in the selection of optimal parameters. 展开更多

Given their numerous functional and architectural benefits, such as improved bearing capacity and increased resistance to elastic instability modes,cold-formed steel(CFS)built-up sections have become increasingly developed and used in recent years, particularly in the construction industry. This paper presents an analytical and numerical study of assembled CFS two single channel-shaped columns with different slenderness and configurations(backto-back,face-to-face,and box). These columns were joined by double-row rivets for the back-to-back and box configurations, whereas they were welded together for the face-to-face design. The built-up columns were filled with ordinary concrete of good strength.Finite element models were applied, using ABAQUS software,to assess mechanical performance and study the influence of assembly techniques on the behavior of cold-formed columns under axial compression.Analytical approaches based on Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 4 recommendations for un-filled and concrete-filled columns respectively were followed for the numerical analysis, and concrete confinement effects were also considered per American Concrete Institute(ACI)standards for face-to-face and box configurations. The obtained results indicated a good correlation between the numerical results and the proposed analytical methodology which did not exceed 8%.The failure modes showed that the columns failed due to instabilities such as local and global buckling. 展开更多

The riveting joint is one of the important joint methods to permanently fasten two thin-walled sheet-metal parts. It is most ba- sic to efficiently analyze and estimate the deformation of the riveting joint for the performance, fatigue durability and damage of the riveting structure in the aircraft. This paper researches the riveting process mathematics modeling and simulating to more accurately analyze deformation of thin-walled sheet-metal parts. First, the mathematics and mechanics models for the elastic deformation, plastic deformation and springback of the rivet are built by mechanics theory. Second, on the basis of ABAQUS system, a finite element system, an instance made up of the rivet and two thin-walled sheet-metal parts of aluminum alloy is used to analyze and simulate the stress and deformation. What's more, a comparison is made between the results obtained by the mathematics and mechanics models and those by finite element method (FEM). The models are proved true by the calculating and simulation results of the instance. 展开更多

Self-piercing riveting(SPR)is a cold forming technique used to fasten together two or more sheets of materials with a rivet without the need to predrill a hole. The application of SPR in the automotive sector has become increasingly popular mainly due to the growing use of lightweight materials in transportation applications. However,SPR joining of these advanced light materials remains a challenge as these materials often lack a good combination of high strength and ductility to resist the large plastic deformation induced by the SPR process. In this paper,SPR joints of advanced materials and their corresponding failure mechanisms are discussed, aiming to provide the foundation for future improvement of SPR joint quality. This paper is divided into three major sections:1)joint failures focusing on joint defects originated from the SPR process and joint failure modes under different mechanical loading conditions,2)joint corrosion issues, and 3)joint optimisation via process parameters and advanced techniques. 展开更多

Crashworthiness of a civil airplane fuselage section was studied in this paper. Firstly, the failure criterion of a rivet was studied by test, showing that the ultimate tension and shear failure loads were obviously affected by the loading speed. The relations between the loading speed and the average ultimate shear, tension loads were expressed by two logarithmic functions, Then, a vertical drop test of a civil airplane fuselage section was conducted with an actual impact velocity of 6.85 m/s, meanwhile the deformation of cabin frame and the accelerations at typical locations were measured. The finite element model of a main fuselage structure was developed and validated by modal test, and the error between the calculated frequencies and the test ones of the first four modes were less than 5%. Numerical simulation of the drop test was performed by using the LS-DYNA code and the simulation results show a good agreement with that of drop test. Deforming mode of the analysis was the same as the drop test; the maximum average rigid acceleration in test was 8.8 l g while the calculated one was 9.17g, with an error of 4.1%; average maximum test deformation at four points on the front cabin floor was 420 mm, while the calculated one was 406 mm, with an error of 3.2%; the peak value of the calculated acceleration at a typical location was 14.72g, which is lower than the test result by 5.46%; the calculated rebound velocity result was greater than the test result 17.8% and energy absorption duration was longer than the test result by 5.73%. 展开更多

Self-piercing riveting(SPR)has been widely used in automobile industry, and the strength prediction of SPR joints always attracts the attention of researchers. In this work,a prediction method of the cross-tension strength of SPR joints was proposed on the basis of finite element(FE)simulation and extreme gradient boosting decision tree(XGBoost)algorithm. An FE model of SPR process was established to simulate the plastic deformations of rivet and substrate materials and verified in terms of cross-sectional dimensions of SPR joints. The residual mechanical field from SPR process simulation was imported into a 2D FE model for the cross-tension testing simulation of SPR joints, and cross-tension strengths from FE simulation show a good consistence with the experiment result.Based on the verified FE model, the mechanical properties and thickness of substrate materials were varied and then used for FE simulation to obtain cross-tension strengths of a number of SPR joints, which were used to train the regression model based on the XGBoost algorithm in order to achieve prediction for cross-tension strength of SPR joints. Results show that the cross-tension strengths of SPR steel/aluminum joints could be successfully predicted by the XGBoost regression model with a respective error less than 7.6%compared to experimental values. 展开更多

To fulfill the demands for higher quality, efficiency and flexibility in aviation industry,a multi-functional end effector is designed to automate the drilling and riveting processes in assembling carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP)and aluminum components for a robotic aircraft assembly system. To meet the specific functional requirements for blind rivet installation on CFRP and aluminum materials, additional modules are incorporated on the end effector aside of the basic processing modules for drilling. And all of these processing modules allow for a onestep-drilling-countersinking process, hole inspection, automatic rivet feed, rivet geometry check, sealant application, rivet insertion and installation.Besides,to guarantee the better quality of the hole drilled and joints riveted, several online detection and adjustment measures are applied to this end effector, including the reference detection and perpendicular calibration, which could effectively ensure the positioning precision and perpendicular accuracy as demanded. Finally, the test result shows that this end effector is capable of producing each hole to a positioning precision within ±0.5 mm,aperpendicular accuracy within 0.3°,a diameter tolerance of H8,and a countersink depth tolerance of±0.01 mm.Moreover,it could drill and rivet up to three joints per minute, with acceptable shearing and tensile strength. 展开更多

There are numerous riveting points on the large-sized aircraft panel, irregular row of riveting points on delta wing. It is essential to plan the riveting sequence reasonably to improve the efficiency and accuracy of automatic drilling and riveting. Therefore, this article presents a new multi-objective optimization method based on ant colony optimization (ACO). Multi-objective optimization model of automatic drilling and riveting sequence planning is built by expressing the efficiency and accuracy of riveting as functions of the points' coordinates. In order to search the sequences efficiently and improve the quality of the sequences, a new local pheromone updating rule is applied when the ants search sequences. Pareto dominance is incorporated into the proposed ACO to find out the non-dominated sequences. This method is tested on a hyperbolicity panel model of ARJ21 and the result shows its feasibility and superiority compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA). 展开更多

The concave die design of self-pierce riveting(SPR) is of critical importance for product quality. The optimization of concave die parameters based on orthogonal test is proposed to explore the relationship between self-pierce riveted joint quality and die parameters. There are nine independent die parameter factors in orthogonal test and each factor has 4 levels. In order to evaluate the interlock and neck thickness, we carry out numerical simulations by the software DEFORM-2D. Then, the primary and secondary factors that affect the joint quality have been found out by means of range analysis. Finally, an optimization scheme is brought forward to design concave die in SPR process, which indicates that the joint has higher quality than that of former orthogonal tests. This work can be extended by a detailed mechanical and fatigue analysis for the joint quality of SPR process. 展开更多

Friction self-piercing riveting(F-SPR)process based on a pip die has been invented to solve the cracking problems in riveting high-strength and low-ductility light metals, such as magnesium alloys, cast aluminum, and 7 series aluminum alloys. In this paper,in order to solve quality issues caused by the misalignment between rivet and pip-die in F-SPR,a flat-die based F-SPR process was proposed and employed to join 1.27 mm-thick AA6061-T6 to 3 mm-thick AZ31B.The results indicate that a 1.0 mm die distance is effective to avoid rivet upset and insufficient flaring. As the feed rate increases, the heat input in the whole process decreases, resulting in a larger riveting force, which in turn increases both the bottom thickness and interlock amount.Besides,solid-state bonding, including Al-Mg intermetallic compounds(IMCs),Al-Mg mechanical mixture, and Al-Fe atom interdiffusion was observed at the joint interfaces. The upper Al layer was softened, but the lower Mg layer was hardened, and both sheets exhibited a narrowed affected region with the increase of feed rate, while the rivet hardness shows no obvious change.Three fracture modes appeared accompanying the variations in lap-shear strength and energy absorption as the feed rate increased from 2 mm/s to 8 mm/s.Finally,the F-SPR process using a flat die was compared to those using a pip die and a flat bottom die to show the advantage of flat die on coping with the misalignment problem. 展开更多

A recently developed friction self-piercing riveting(F-SPR)technique based on the combination of fric-tion stir processing and riveting has been reported to possess both solid-state bonding and mechanical fastening characteristics. However, there is still a lack of quantitative understanding of the hybrid en-hancement mechanism, hindering its engineering application. To fill in this gap,the current research investigated the microstructure evolution, microhardness distribution, and miniature-tensile performance of the aluminum alloy AA7075-T6 F-SPR joints by experiments. An accurate numerical simulation model was established to quantitatively evaluate the individual contributions of microstructure, local bonding strength, and macro interlocking to the performance of the joint, which could well explain the experi-mental results. It was found that due to the friction stirring of the rivet,solid-state bonding driven by dynamic recrystallization is realized between the trapped aluminum in the rivet cavity and the bottom aluminum sheet. The solid-state bonding zone has 75%yield strength,81%ultimate tensile strength, and 106%elongation compared to the base material. This solid-state bonding enables the internal interlock-ing between the trapped aluminum and the rivet to withstand the additional load, which forms a novel dual-interlock fastening mechanism and increases the peak cross-tension force by 14.3%compared to the single-interlock joint. 展开更多

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) and AZ31B Mg alloy were joined by the friction self-piercing riveting(F-SPR) with different steel rivet shank sizes. With the increase of rivet shank size, lap shear fracture load and mechanical interlock distance increased. Ultrafine grains were formed at the joint in AZ31B as a result of dynamic recrystallization, which contributed to the higher hardness. Fatigue life of the CFRP-AZ31B joint was studied at various peak loads of 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 kN and compared with the resistance spot welded AZ31B-AZ31B from the open literature. The fatigue performance was better at higher peak load(>2 kN) and comparable to that of resistance spot welding of AZ31B to AZ31B at lower peak loads(<1 kN). From fractography, the crack initiation for lower peak load(<1 kN) case was observed at the fretting positions on the top and bottom surfaces of AZ31B sheet. When peak load was increased, fretting between the rivet and the top of AZ31B became more dominant to initiate a crack during fatigue testing. 展开更多

Carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP)and aluminum stacks are widely used in aviation industry due to light weight and high performance.Millions of rivet holes need to be drilled on body materials, and more than 80%of fatigue cracks occur at the connection holes,so the damage and residual stress of hole surface have crucial effect on the riveting fatigue life of CFRP/aluminum stacks and the flight performance.Recently, robotic rotary ultrasonic drilling(RRUD)technology is a promising method to machine the stacks. However, the hole surface strengthening mechanism in RRUD and the service performance of the riveting joint are not verified. Thus,in this paper, the hole surface strengthening mechanism of RRUD for CFRP/aluminum stacks is investigated,a theoretical residual stress model is established, and the fatigue life experiment of riveted joints is conducted.Firstly, analysis on residual stress in RRUD is carried out with consideration of strengthening force and cutting temperature.Residual stress model is established based on the calculation of elastic stress, plastic stress and stress release.Validation experiment results show that ultrasonic vibration changes residual stress from tensile stress to compressive stress. At the same time, comparative damage analysis of CFRP hole exit and hole surface in robotic conventional drilling(RCD)and RRUD is presented. Finally, fatigue strength experiments of riveted joints are conducted for performance verification.Experimental results indicate that fatigue life of single-hole riveted joints is increased by 68%with ultrasonic vibration, and four-hole riveted joint arranged according to aerospace design standards is increased by more than 86%. 展开更多
