The mega debris flow occurred on August 13 th 2010 in Qingping town,China(hereafter called '8.13' Debris Flow) have done great damage to the local habitants as well as to the re-construction projects in the quake-hit areas, and the channel-fill deposit problem caused by the debris flow was the most destructive. Moreover,it is of high possibility that an even severe deposit problem would reappear and result in worse consequences. In order to maximize risk reduction of this problem, relevant departments of the government established a series of emergency river restoration schemes, for which the numerical analysis is an important procedure to evaluate and determine the optimized one. This study presents a numerical analysis by applying a twodimensional debris flow model combined with a relevant water-sediment model to simulate the deposit during the progress of the debris flow, and to calculate and analyze the river flow field under both the present condition and different restoration conditions. The results show that the debris flow model, which takes the confluence of the Wenjia Gully to the main river into account, could simulate the deposit process quite well.In the reproduced debris flow from the simulation of the '8.13' Debris Flow, the original river flow path has switched to a relatively lower place just along the right bank with a high speed of near 7m.s-1 after being blocked by the deposit, which is highly hazardous. To prevent this hazard,a recommended scheme is derived through inter-comparison of different restoration conditions. It shows that the recommended scheme is able to reduce the water level and as well to regulate the flow path.Based on the given conditions of the mainstream and the tributary confluence for the simulated '8.13' Debris Flow, when encountering a debris flow with deposit volume less than 0.5 million m3,the river channel can endure a 20-year return flood;however, when the deposit volume increases to 2 million m3,the flood capacity of the river will be greatly impacted and the scheme becomes invalid. The recommended scheme supported by the present study has been applied to the emergency river restoration after this mega-debris flow. 展开更多

Taking the rainstorm flood disaster of Huaihe River basin as the research object, according to the principles of risk assessment for natural disasters, starting from the fatalness of inducing factors and the vulnerability of hazard bearing body, the weight of each impact factor was calculated by using AHP. By using spatial analysis and statistical function of GIS,the integrated risk chart of rainstorm flood disaster in Huaihe River basin was obtained. The results showed that the high risk areas of rainstorm flood disaster in Huaihe River basin mainly distributed in the southern part of Henan, the central northern part of Anhui and eastern part of Jiangsu Province. Due to higher fatalness of inducing factors in southern Henan, there was high risk in the region. Central Anhui and east Jiangsu were not only high-fatalness zones but also high vulnerability zones of population and economy. 展开更多

Concentrations of heavy metals in 74 sediment samples from the Fenghe River, which originates from the north of the Qinling Mountains and flows through Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China, were characterized by employing geographic information system(GIS)mapping, fuzzy synthetic assessment, and multivariate statistical analysis to determine the enrichment characteristics of heavy metals as well as their potential risks of pollution to sediments. Al, Cd, and Co were the major pollutants, with a high enrichment factor(EF) value. Heavy metal concentrations from samples near the paper plant were maintained at a high level. Significant enrichment of Al, Ba, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Co was found in the midstream and downstream, while high concentration of Cu occurred in the headwater stream. Based on the cluster and principal component analyses, sediment metals mainly came from the paper plants, agronomic practices, natural sources, and tourism, with a contribution of 51.59%, 23.01%, 14.21%, and 9.88%, respectively. Sediment pollution assessment explored using fuzzy theory based on the entropy method and toxicity coefficient showed that 26, 32, and 11 sites fell into Class III(slightly polluted), Class IV(moderately polluted), and Class V(heavily polluted), respectively, and their scores of membership degree in the polluted level were on the rise, suggesting a relatively high degree of sediment metal pollution in the study area. Closely related to the excessive industrial and agricultural applications, metal pollution in sediment is necessary to be addressed in the Fenghe River. 展开更多

Based on the observation by a Regional Air Quality Monitoring Network including 16 monitoring stations, temporal and spatial variations of ozone (O3), NO2 and total oxidant (Ox) were analyzed by both linear regression and cluster analysis. A fast increase of regional O3 concentrations of 0.86 ppbWyr was found for the annual averaged values from 2006 to 2011 in Guangdong, China. Such fast O3 increase is accompanied by a correspondingly fast NOx reduction as indicated by a fast NO2 reduction rate of 0,61 ppbV/yr. Based on a cluster analysis, the monitoring stations were classified into two major categories - rural stations (non-urban) and suburban/urban stations. The 03 concentrations at rural stations were relatively conserved while those at suburban/urban stations showed a fast increase rate of 2.0 ppbV/yr accompanied by a NO2 reduction rate of 1.2 ppbV/yr. Moreover, a rapid increase of the averaged O3 concentrations in springtime (13%/yr referred to 2006 level) was observed, which may result from the increase of solar duration, reduction of precipitation in Guangdong and transport from Eastern Central China. Application of smog production algorithm showed that the photochemical O3 production is mainly volatile organic compounds (VOC)-controlled. However, the photochemical O3 production is sensitive to both NOx and VOC for O3 pollution episode. Accordingly, it is expected that a combined NOx and VOC reduction will be helpful for the reduction of the O3 pollution episodes in Pearl River Delta while stringent VOC emission control is in general required for the regional O3 pollution control. 展开更多

To understand the variations in vegetation and their correlation with climate factors in the upper catchments of the Yellow River, China, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) time series data from 2000 to 2010 were collected based on the MOD13Q1 product. The coefficient of variation, Theil–Sen median trend analysis and the Mann–Kendall test were combined to investigate the volatility characteristic and trend characteristic of the vegetation. Climate data sets were then used to analyze the correlation between variations in vegetation and climate change. In terms of the temporal variations, the vegetation in this study area improved slightly from 2000 to 2010, although the volatility characteristic was larger in 2000–2005 than in 2006–2010. In terms of the spatial variation, vegetation which is relatively stable and has a significantly increasing trend accounts for the largest part of the study area. Its spatial distribution is highly correlated with altitude, which ranges from about 2000 to 3000 m in this area. Highly fluctuating vegetation and vegetation which showed a significantly decreasing trend were mostly distributed around the reservoirs and in the reaches of the river with hydropower developments. Vegetation with a relatively stable and significantly decreasing trend and vegetation with a highly fluctuating and significantly increasing trend are widely dispersed. With respect to the response of vegetation to climate change, about 20–30% of the vegetation has a significant correlation with climatic factors and the correlations in most areas are positive: regions with precipitation as the key influencing factor account for more than 10% of the area; regions with temperature as the key influencing factor account for less than 10% of the area; and regions with precipitation and temperature as the key influencing factors together account for about 5% of the total area. More than 70% of the vegetation has an insignificant correlation with climatic factors. 展开更多

River water plays a key role in human health, and in social and economic development, and is often affected by both natural factors and human activities. An in-depth understanding of the role of these factors can help in developing an effective catchment management strategy to protect precious water resources. This study analyzed river water quality, patterns of terrestrial and riparian ecosystems, intensity of agricultural activities, industrial structure, and spatial distribution of pollutant emissions in the Haihe River Basin in China for the year of 2010, identifying the variables that have the greatest impact on river water quality. The area percentage of farmland in study area, the percentage of natural vegetation cover in the 1000-m riparian zone, rural population density, industrial Gross Domestic Product(GDP)/km^2, and industrial amino nitrogen emissions were all significantly correlated with river water quality(P < 0.05). Farming had the largest impact on river water quality, explaining 43.0% of the water quality variance, followed by the coverage of natural vegetation in the 1000-m riparian zone, which explained 36.2% of the water quality variance. Industrial amino nitrogen emissions intensity and rural population density explained 31.6% and 31.4% of the water quality variance, respectively, while industrial GDP/km^2 explained 26.6%. Together, these five indicators explained 67.3% of the total variance in water quality. Consequently, water environmental management of the Haihe River Basin should focus on adjusting agricultural activities, conserving riparian vegetation, and reducing industrial pollutant emissions by optimizing industrial structure. The results demonstrate how human activities drive the spatial pattern changes of river water quality, and they can provide reference for developing land use guidelines and for prioritizing management practices to maintain stream water quality in a large river basin. 展开更多

Soil carbon to nitrogen(C/N) ratio is one of the most important variables reflecting soil quality and ecological function, and an indicator for assessing carbon and nitrogen nutrition balance of soils. Its variation reflects the carbon and nitrogen cycling of soils. In order to explore the spatial variability of soil C/N ratio and its controlling factors of the Ili River valley in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region,Northwest China, the traditional statistical methods, including correlation analysis, geostatistic alanalys and multiple regression analysis were used. The statistical results showed that the soil C/N ratio varied from 7.00 to 23.11,with a mean value of 10.92,and the coefficient of variation was 31.3%.Correlation analysis showed that longitude, altitude, precipitation, soil water, organic carbon, and total nitrogen were positively correlated with the soil C/N ratio(P < 0.01),whereas negative correlations were found between the soil C/N ratio and latitude, temperature, soil bulk density and soil p H.Ordinary Cokriging interpolation showed that r and ME were 0.73 and 0.57,respectively,indicating that the prediction accuracy was high. The spatial autocorrelation of the soil C/N ratio was 6.4 km,and the nugget effect of the soil C/N ratio was 10% with a patchy distribution,in which the area with high value(12.00–20.41) accounted for 22.6% of the total area.Land uses changed the soil C/N ratio with the order of cultivated land > grass land > forest land > garden.Multiple regression analysis showed that geographical and climatic factors, and soil physical and chemical properties could independently explain 26.8%and 55.4% of the spatial features of soil C/N ratio, while human activities could independently explain 5.4% of the spatial features only. The spatial distribution of soil C/N ratio in the study has important reference value for managing soil carbon and nitrogen, and for improving ecological function to similar regions. 展开更多

During the past two decades, the exhibition industry in China has been developing rapidly and has become an important part of the modern service industry, particularly the agglomeration characteristics of exhibition enterprises highlighted on the regional scale. Although the development of theoretical research on the western exhibition industry has taken place over time, the spatial perspective has not been at the centre of attention so far. This paper aims to fill this gap and report on the agglomeration characteristics of exhibition enterprises and their influential factors. Based on data about exhibition enterprises in the Pearl River Delta(PRD) during 1991–2013, using the Ripley K function analysis and kernel density estimation, this research identifies that: 1) the exhibition enterprise on the regional scale is significantly characterized by spatial agglomeration, and the agglomeration density and scale are continuously increasing; 2) the spatial pattern of agglomeration has developed from a single-center to multi-center form. Meanwhile, this paper profiles the factors influencing the spatial agglomeration of exhibition enterprises by selecting the panel data of nine cities in the PRD in 1999, 2002, 2006 and 2013. The results show that market capacity, urban informatization level and exhibition venues significantly influence the location choice of exhibition enterprises. Among them, the market capacity is a variable that exerts a far greater impact than other factors do. 展开更多

The hydrological parameters were recorded in eleven stations spanned out on the bas<span style="white-space:normal;"><span style="font-family:;" "="">is<span style="white-space:normal;"><span style="font-family:;" "=""> of population density and human activities. Water quality parameters (Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, Total dissolved solutes, Redox potential and conductivity) were collected in subsurface water using a multiple parameter. Surface currents and morphometric (depth and width) parameters were recorded using a drifter, sonar depth and GPS. The field measurements took placed between 18/05/2019 to 08/09/2020 and were divided into six (06) cruises. The data were later subjected to an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Principle Component Analysis using XLSTAT 2017 (2.7 version) software. Results obtained revealed that, the water quality parameters were spatially more stable no<span style="white-space:normal;"><span style="font-family:;" "="">t<span style="white-space:normal;"><span style="font-family:;" "="">signficant at (df = 9, p <<span style="white-space:normal;"><span style="font-family:;" "=""> <span style="white-space:normal;"><span style="font-family:;" "="">0.05) with a relatively low temperature (25.5<span style="white-space:normal;"><span style="font-family:;" "=""><span style="white-space:nowrap;">°C - 27<span style="white-space:nowrap;">°C) during the wet period. The limit of the frontal zone extended to S5 (Bonalokan, 8.25<span style="white-space:normal;"><span style="font-family:;" "=""> <span style="white-space:normal;"><span style="font-family:;" "="">km from S1) during the snapshot of the dry period, spring phase and flood tide conditions. Inversely, during wet period, this extension reduced to S1 (Bridge) and relatively increases slightly to S3 (Bonangang) during the neap phase and ebb tides of this season. This result revealed a change in the axial gradient of about eight (08) and four (04) kilometers during the seasonal and tidal scales (lunar and diurnal periods) respectively. These changes were also accompanied by changes in the water quality signatures, that may affect the fishery distribution and compositions. However, futures studies to buttress the results of this investigation should focus on longer time series sampling methods and model developments. 展开更多

River profile analysis has been used extensively in the earth sciences. Commonly, exploration of river profiles requires downloading and processing Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for specific areas, which limits the scope of exploratory analysis. Presented here is a web application designed to analyze river profiles at 90m resolution at a near-global scale. The app allows users to quickly query downstream or upstream from selected points anywhere within ±60 degrees latitude,in order to interactively analyze corresponding river profiles. River profile analysis can be performed in both distance and χ space, where χ is a metric that is proportional to the presumed steady-state shape of the river profile. River locations are based on the HydroSHEDS 90m drainage direction grid,as well as custom computed D8 drainage direction and void-filled SRTM DEMs. RiverProfileApp is open source, and although currently it is designed as an exploratory tool, more functions can be easily added via community contributions and/or from existing toolsets. It is available from RiverProfileApp.github.io. 展开更多

Quantitative assessment of water quality and its spatial variation identification, as well as the discernment of primary factors affecting water quality are in its urgent in water environment management. In this study, four key water quality indicators, namely, ammonia nitrogen(NH_4^+-N), permanganate index(COD_(Mn)), total phosphorus(TP) and total nitrogen(TN) at 71 sampling sites were selected to evaluate water quality and its spatial variation identification. More concerns were emphasized on the anthropogenic factors(land use pattern) and natural factors(river density, elevation and precipitation) to quantify the overall water quality variations at different spatial scales. Results showed that the Yi-Shu-Si River sub-basin had a better water quality status than the Huai River sub-basin. The moderate polluted area nearly distributed in the upper and middle reaches of the Shaying River and Guo River. The high cluster centers which were surrounded with COD_(Mn), NH_4^+-N, TN and TP mainly also distributed in the upper and middle reaches of the Shaying River and Guo River. Redundancy analysis showed that the 200 m buffer area acted as the most sensitive area, which was easily subjected to pollution. The precipitation was identified as the most important variables among all the studied hydrological units, followed by farmland, urban land or elevation. The point source pollution was still existed although the non-point source pollution was also identified. The urban surface runoff pollution was severer than farmland fertilizer loss at the sub-basin scale in flood season, while the farmland showed "small-scale" effects for explaining overall water quality variations. This research is helpful for identifying the overall water quality variations from the scale-process interactions and providing a scientific basis for pollution control and decision making for the Huai River Basin. 展开更多
