This paper examines how those wounded characters reflect on both Jake Barnes and Hemingway＇s philosophy that we are all wounded in life and must make choices that allow us to live as best we can without hurting others. By close reading, the author hopes to show how two characters, Belmonte and Brett Ashley, may have been undervalued by critics, and to also show Hemingway＇s essential ambiguity in portraying human relationships, leaving final judgments up to his readers.展开更多

A slowdown of sea surface height （SSH） rise occurred in the Nordic （GIN） seas around 2004. In this study, SSH satellite data and constructed steric height data for the decades before and after 2004 （i.e., May 199...A slowdown of sea surface height （SSH） rise occurred in the Nordic （GIN） seas around 2004. In this study, SSH satellite data and constructed steric height data for the decades before and after 2004 （i.e., May 1994 to April 2014） were used for comparative analysis. The findings indicate that the rate of slowdown of SSH rises in the GIN seas （3.0 mm/a） far exceeded that of the global mean （0.6 mm/a）. In particular, the mean steric height of the GIN seas increased at a rate of 4.5 mm/a and then decreased at a slower pace. This was the main factor responsible for the stagnation of the SSH rises, while the mass factor only increased slightly. The Norwegian Sea particularly experienced the most prominent slowdown in SSH rises, mainly due to decreased warming of the 0-600 m layer. The controlling factors of this decreased warming were cessation in the increase of volume of the Atlantic inflow and stagnation of warming of the inflow. However, variations in air-sea thermal flux were not a major factor. In the recent two decades, mean halosteric components of the GIN seas decreased steadily and remained at a rate of 2 mm/a or more because of increased flow and salinity of the Atlantic inflow during the first decade, and reduction in freshwater inputs from the Arctic Ocean in the second decade.展开更多

In this study,the dynamic characteristics of microscale floating bubbles near the vertical wall are studied.This occurrence is common in industrial and natural phenomena.Although many studies have been conducted on mi...In this study,the dynamic characteristics of microscale floating bubbles near the vertical wall are studied.This occurrence is common in industrial and natural phenomena.Although many studies have been conducted on microscale bubbles,few studies investigate floating bubbles with very small Reynolds number(Re)near the wall,which is the main research goal of this study.Therefore,this study establishes a model for the ascent of small-scale bubbles near a vertical wall using the interFoam solver in OpenFOAM.This study investigates the influences of diverse viscosity parameters,varying distances from the wall,and different gas flow rates on the terminal velocity,deformation,and motion trajectory of bubbles.The results reveal that as liquid viscosity increases,the Re of bubbles gradually decreases and reaches a minimum of 0.012,which is similar to the Re of micrometer-sized bubbles in water.The characteristics of the wall-induced force in the longitudinal direction are closely related to the changes in liquid viscosity.Under low-viscosity conditions,the induced lift is the principal form of action,whereas under high-viscosity conditions,it is primarily manifested as induced drag.展开更多
United Nations(UN)encourages sovereign states to take prompt and concrete measures to accomplish net-zero emissions by year 2050,requesting carbon dioxide removal(CDR)technologies to be prepared and implemented in suc...United Nations(UN)encourages sovereign states to take prompt and concrete measures to accomplish net-zero emissions by year 2050,requesting carbon dioxide removal(CDR)technologies to be prepared and implemented in such ambitious climate action roadmap.However,whether CDR technologies should be further promoted or discontinued post net-zero emission year remains unclear.In this Earth-system modelling research,we compare UN-suggested 2050 net-zero emission scenario against other common climate mitigation scenarios outlined by shared social-economic pathways(SSPs).We also simulate continued CDR implementations after net-zero emissions,which is hypothetically achieved in year 2050 and 2070 respectively,to investigate how CDR can impact the global climate throughout the whole 21st and 22nd centuries.The modelling results find if the 2050 UN net-zero emission goal is accomplished,the global average surface air temperature(SAT)in the end of 21st century is around 1.5℃higher compared to the pre-industrial level,promising an Earth environment more habitable than other scenarios without CDR.When CDR is applied to remove equal amount of anthropogenic CO_(2)emissions since industrial revolution,it restores the global average SAT close to pre-industrial level of 13.5℃.However,CDR-induced global carbon distribution within ocean,atmosphere,and land pools is different from the pre-industrial condition,causing reduced atmospheric CO_(2)concentration by 9 to 38 ppm compared to the pre-industrial cases,and more alkalinized ocean surface with pH increase of 0.004 to 0.024.This study affirms CDR cannot be viewed as a reversed process to anthropogenic CO_(2)emissions,accordingly climate policies to overcome the uncertainties after for late 21st century still require careful trade-offs for the decarbonation and the cost-benefits of CDR measures.展开更多
