[Method] The soil incubation experiment was conducted to study the effect of red mud on the pH values and electrical conductivity (EC), and the remediation efficiency of red mud on lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) in heavy metal contaminated soil. [Result] Red mud addition reduced the content of exchangeable Pb, Zn and Cd in the soil significantly. Compared with the control, when incubated for 30, 60 and 90 d with the red mud dosage of 4% (W/W), the exchangeable Pb content was decreased by 39.25%, 41.38% and 50.19%; exchangeable Zn content was decreased by 49.26%, 57.32% and 47.16%; and exchangeable Cd content was decreased by 19.53%, 24.06% and 25.70%, respectively. The application of red mud had significant impact on the share of Pb, Zn and Cd contents in five forms, and different amounts of red mud application all reduced the proportion of exchangeable Pb, Zn and Cd to the total Pb, Zn and Cd. In addition, the proportion of exchangeable Pb, Zn and Cd to total Pb, Zn and Cd decreased with the increasing amount of red mud addition. [Conclusion] The study provided references for reasonable application of red mud and reduction of heavy metal pollution in paddy soil.展开更多

In this study, the uptake of phosphate by red mud activated by heat treatment and acid-heat treatment was investigated. The factors influencing the adsorption were also investigated. The result showed that the red mud sample treated using acid-heat method at 80℃ with 0.25 mol/L HCl for 2 h achieved the highest phosphate removal. For the heat-activated red mud, the sample heated at 700℃ for 2 h preformed better than the other heat treatment. Phosphate removal by the activated red mud was significantly pH dependent, and pH 7 was the optimal pH for phosphate removal. The adsorption fits Langmuir isotherm model well and the maximum adsorption capacities of the acid-heat activated red mud and the heat activated samples were 202.9 mgP/g and 155.2 mgP/g, respectively.展开更多

Taking into account the rela- tively considerable content and availability of scandium, red mud can be viewed as an important and promising scandium resource rather than a solid waste. This paper is primarily to review the investigations of scandium recov- ery from red mud based on the most widely used hydrometallurgical processes including acid leaching, sol- vent extraction and ion exchange adsorption. It is thought that recovery of scandium from red mud should be con- sidered as a direct objective rather than a by-product in the development of overall flowsheet. In order to achieve environmentally-friendly processes with high scandium recovery and low cost, more attention is required to be paid to optimizing the selective leaching of scandium to decrease mineral acid consumption and alleviate pollution, and developing new solvent extraction systems and novel ion exchange adsorption materials with high selectivity and recognition for scandium.展开更多

The present paper deals with the use of thermal plasma technology for producing pig iron from red mud waste fines. The smelting reduction of red mud was carried out in a 35 kW DC extended arc thermal plasma reactor. Red mud was properly mixed with fluxes and graphite (fixed carbon, 99%) as a reductant as per stoichiometric requirement. The effect of various process parameters like a reductant, fluxes and smelting time on iron recovery was studied and optimized. An optimum condition for the maximum recovery of iron was obtained. A new thermal plasma process applicable to direct iron making from red mud waste fines that would achieve significant utilization of red mud was proposed.展开更多

Different ratios red muds were added to steel slags to optimize the preparation of novel ceramics by a traditional ceramic preparation process. The sintering mechanism, microstructure, and performance were studied by X-ray diffraction techniques, scanning electron microscopy, and combined experiments of linear shrinkage, water absorption, and flexural strength. The results confirmed that red mud can reduce the volumetric instabilities through the complementarity of red mud and ferroalloy slag. The crystal phases in the ceramics are all pyroxene group minerals, including diopside ferrian, augite, and diopside. The flexural strength of the ceramic that contains 40 wt% red mud and was prepared at the optimal sintering temperature(1140°C) is greater than 93 MPa; its corresponding water absorption is less than 0.05%.展开更多

Nuggets were gotten by directly reducing the carbon-bearing pellets of red mud and coal. The results showed that the strongest influencing factor is temperature, and the separation between liquid iron and slag is thoroughly. The nuggets can be gotten when the pellets, in which xC/xO is 1.6 and the basicity is 1.0, were maintained in 30 min at 1 400 ℃. The nuggets have a high TFe content which is higher than that in the hot metal produced in BF. It also has a low content of Si and Mn, but a high content of S and P. The main compositions of the slag are amorphous phase mainly containing SiO;and unreduced Fe;SiO;. Of course, a little reduced iron retains in it.展开更多

The influences of...To recycle residual iron efficiently in Bayer red mud, three-factor three-level orthogonal experiments on carbon-bearing pellets of Bayer red mud were conducted on the basis of their characteristics. The influences of CaO dosage, temperature and roast- ing time on total iron content and iron recovery of reduced iron powder were studied. Results showed that these factors slightly influenced iron recovery, but significantly influenced total iron content. The principal factor influencing total iron content was CaO dosage, followed by temperature and roasting time. An increase in CaO dosage could decrease total iron content, whereas an increase in temperature and an extension of roasting time could improve total iron content. The reduced iron powder with total iron content of 88.4 l% and iron recovery rate of 97.97% can be obtained under the optimal conditions of temperature of 1 275 ℃, roasting time of 60 min and CaO dosage of 7.5%. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses of the reduced pellets showed that iron minerals in red mud were almost completely reduced to metallic iron. The principal factor influencing the total iron content of reduced iron powder was the grain size of metallic iron particles. An increase in CaO dosage hindered the growth of metallic iron particles, whereas an increase in temperature and an extension of roasting time could neutralise the effect of CaO dosage. Therefore, CaO dosage should be decreased when iron minerals in red mud can be adequately reduced into metallic iron.展开更多

文摘β-hemihydrate phosphogypsum(HPG)was used to replace a part of cement to prepare hemihydrate phosphogypsum-red mud concrete, effectively increasing the comprehensive use of red mud(RM)and HPG in the concrete. The effects of different RM and HPG contents on the flow properties, water absorption and strengths of HPG-RM concretes were investigated. The appropriate content of HPG reduces the water resistance of red mud concrete, enhances the cohesion and water retention, and effectively filled the pores to decrease the degree of free water erosion. The optimal HPG content was 5%,10%,and 10%for red mud concretes with 30%,40%,and 50%RM,respectively.HPG content has more significant effects on the 28 d strengths of HPG-RM concretes. This consequence is accordant with the effect of HPG content on the pore size and pore size distribution from MIP results. The SEM and XRD results show that a large amount of SO_(4)^(2-)and Ca^(2+)from HPG promote the volcanic ash effect of RM generating more favorable hydration products. However, excessive HPG generates more Ettringite to inhibit the generation of calcium silicate and albite, causing cracks in the concrete and deteriorating performance.

文摘A novel adsorbent was prepared from granular red mud mixed with cement and its potential to be a suitable adsorbent for the removal of cadmium ions from aqueous solutions was evaluated. The wet red mud was directly mixed up with cement at different mass fractions of 2%-8% and their properties were investigated. Based on the textural characteristics and strength, the granular red mud with 2% addition of cement maintaining for 6 d is identified to have better properties. The batch adsorption experiments for adsorption of Cd2+ ions from solution were performed at 30, 40 and 50 °C at different initial concentrations under the condition of constant pH of 6.5. The equilibrium adsorption was found to increase with the increase of temperature during the adsorption process. Langmuir adsorption isotherm model was found to match the experimental adsorption isotherm better. The kinetics of adsorption was modeled using a pseudo second order kinetic model and the model parameters were estimated.

文摘[Objective] To study the remediation efficiency of red mud on Pb, Zn and Cd in the heavy metal contaminated paddy soil of mine area, to clarify its remediation mechanism and fertilizer efficiency on heavy metal contaminated soil. [Conclusion] The study provided references for reasonable application of red mud and reduction of heavy metal pollution in paddy soil.

文摘Red mud is the waste of alumina industry and has high TiO2 and Fe2O3 content which are active components for the adsorption of anion pollutants. The adsorption fits Langmuir isotherm model well and the maximum adsorption capacities of the acid-heat activated red mud and the heat activated samples were 202.9 mgP/g and 155.2 mgP/g, respectively.

文摘The current recovery technique of Sc was complicated and the chemical consumption was high,This was due to the low content of Sc in resources and the difficulty of stripping. In this research, the isooctanol was added into the 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester(P507)extraction system to reduce the extraction and improve the stripping of Sc.The maximum stripping ratio of Sc from loaded organic phase by sulfuric acid can increase from 10%(without isooctanol)to 99%(with 15 vol%isooctanol). In the extraction test of the simulated red mud leaching liquor, the separation factors between Sc and Zr,Sc and Ti are 36 and 350,separately.At the same time, other metals are almost not extracted. The high selectivity and stripping of Sc suggest that the P507 with isooctanol extraction system can be applied in the practical Sc recovery process.

文摘Red mud is the waste generated during aluminum production from bauxite, containing lots of iron and other valuable metals. In order to recover iron from red mud, the technology of adding sodium carbonate—reduction roasting—magnetic separation to treat high-iron red mud was developed. The effects of sodium carbonate dosage, reduction temperature and reduction time on the qualities of final product and the phase transformations in reduction process were discussed in detail. The results showed that the final product (mass percent), assaying Fe of 90.87% and Al2O3 of 0.95% and metallization degree of 94.28% was obtained at an overall iron recovery of 95.76% under the following conditions of adding 8% sodium carbonate, reduction roasting at 1 050 ℃ for 80 min and finally magnetic separation of the reduced pellets by grinding up to 90% passing 0.074 mm at magnetic field intensity of 0.08 T. The XRD (X-ray diffraction) results indicated that the iron oxides were transformed into metallic iron. Most of aluminum mineral and silica mineral reacted with sodium carbonate during the reduction roasting and formed nonmagnetic materials.

文摘Red mud is a slimy caustic residue generated from alumina production. In order to achieve environmentally-friendly processes with high scandium recovery and low cost, more attention is required to be paid to optimizing the selective leaching of scandium to decrease mineral acid consumption and alleviate pollution, and developing new solvent extraction systems and novel ion exchange adsorption materials with high selectivity and recognition for scandium.
文摘Activated carbon (AC) was modified by tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) for selectively extracting scandium from red mud and characterized by BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area. The modified AC had a preferential adsorption to scandium. The influences of adsorbent dos- age, adsorption temperature, and time on adsorption capacity and selectivity to scandium were examined. An optimum adsorbent dosage (-6.25 g/L), adsorption temperature (308 K), and adsorption time (40 min) were figured out. A pseudo-second-order kinetics model was employed for describing the adsorption process of scandium.
文摘Red mud, an insoluble residue produced during alkali leaching of bauxite, is considered as a low-grade iron ore containing 30% to 50% iron. A new thermal plasma process applicable to direct iron making from red mud waste fines that would achieve significant utilization of red mud was proposed.

文摘Red mud is a type of highly alkaline waste residue produced in the process of alumina smelting by the Bayer process.Based on the idea of medium calcium content, solid wastes such as red mud and fly ash were used to prepare non-burnt bricks;and the mass ratio of CaO/SiO2 was selected in the range of 0.88–1.42.Mechanical properties and durability were investigated with a compressive strength test.X-ray diffractometry(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM),and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)techniques were used to characterize the hydration characteristic. The environmental performance was analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry(ICP).The results indicated that the mechanical properties and the durability were optimal when the mass ratio of CaO/SiO2 was 1.23.The hydration products were mostly C–S–H gel,ettringite,Na4Ca(Si10All6)O32·12H2O and Ca3Al2(SiO4)(OH)8.They were responsible for the strength development, and the CaO/SiO2 mass ratio of 1.23 had the best polymerized structure. The results of an environmental performance test showed that the heavy metals in the raw materials were well-solidified in the brick. Therefore, this paper provides an effective solution for use of solid wastes in building material.

文摘A method for preparing novel ceramics was developed in this study. The flexural strength of the ceramic that contains 40 wt% red mud and was prepared at the optimal sintering temperature(1140°C) is greater than 93 MPa; its corresponding water absorption is less than 0.05%.

文摘In order to utilize the iron resource effectively in red mud, a laboratory experiment based on the orthogonal method was carried out. Of course, a little reduced iron retains in it.

文摘To recycle residual iron efficiently in Bayer red mud, three-factor three-level orthogonal experiments on carbon-bearing pellets of Bayer red mud were conducted on the basis of their characteristics. Therefore, CaO dosage should be decreased when iron minerals in red mud can be adequately reduced into metallic iron.
