English reading proficiency is essential for university students in a globalized academic environment,yet many L2 learners encounter challenges,such as limited vocabulary,complex syntax,and unclear text organization,l...English reading proficiency is essential for university students in a globalized academic environment,yet many L2 learners encounter challenges,such as limited vocabulary,complex syntax,and unclear text organization,leading to cognitive overload.Grounded in the Cognitive Load Theory(CLT),this study examines the role of the Chunking Reading Processing Strategy-which integrates fragmented linguistic information into meaningful units at lexical,syntactic,and discourse levels-in alleviating cognitive load and improving reading comprehension.Through a mixed-methods approach,the research investigates how learners at different proficiency levels perceive and apply the chunking strategy,and how such application relates to cognitive load management.The results indicate that higher-proficiency learners employ chunking more frequently and report greater benefits,whereas lower-proficiency learners depend more on instructional support.The study confirms the theoretical and pedagogical value of chunk-based reading instruction and suggests that differentiated,cognitively informed teaching of the chunking strategy can enhance both reading efficiency and strategic awareness among L2 learners.展开更多

Addressing the issues of low accuracy and slow detection speed in recognizing pointer meter readings under varying types and distances, this paper proposes a recognition method based on YOLOv8 and DeepLabv3+. To improve the image input quality of the DeepLabv3+ model, the YOLOv8 detector is used to quickly locate the instrument region and crop it as the input image for recognition. To enhance the accuracy and speed of pointer recognition, the backbone network of DeepLabv3+ was replaced with Mo-bileNetv3, and the ECA+ module was designed to replace its SE module, reducing model parameters while improving recognition precision. The decoder’s fourfold-up sampling was replaced with two twofold-up samplings, and shallow feature maps were fused with encoder features of the corresponding size. The CBAM module was introduced to improve the segmentation accuracy of the pointer. Experiments were conducted using a self-made dataset of pointer-style instruments from nuclear power plants. Results showed that this method achieved a recognition accuracy of 94.5% at a precision level of 2.5, with an average error of 1.522% and an average total processing time of 0.56 seconds, demonstrating strong performance.展开更多

With the evolutionary change in information and communication technologies （ICT）, the definition of literacy has undergone substantial change to include the skills and strategies required to successfully adapt to th...With the evolutionary change in information and communication technologies （ICT）, the definition of literacy has undergone substantial change to include the skills and strategies required to successfully adapt to the rapidly changing ICT contexts. This new definition presents an urgent need to acknowledge the gap between the types of reading experiences students come across at school and those they regularly practice outside the school. One way to bridge such gap is to expand the reading instruction to incorporate electronic reading device, like Kindle, to engage students in electronic reading. Many e-books feature multimodal functionalities, including audio, video, hyperlinks, and interactive tools. Research on this form of reading is still in its infancy in spite of some positive prospects for fostering literacy development and reading comprehension. Therefore, adopting a mixed method approach with 36 college freshmen in central Taiwan, the current study intended to fill in the void by investigating any difference in readers＇ reading comprehension and reading motivation, between the Kindle group and the print-based group. The results indicate that embedding aspects of technology into a traditional reading instruction boosted the participants＇ motivation to read. Nevertheless, the novelty-driven enthusiasm for electronic reading might not sustain students＇ reading motivation long enough to cultivate long-lasting reading habits. The results indicate that there was no significant difference in reading comprehension between two groups. Implications for utilizing electronic readers in EFL classes are also provided.展开更多

The present study explores the importance of developing metaphorical thinking skills in students within the framework of English as a Foreign Language(EFL)reading courses at the tertiary educational level.Metaphorical...The present study explores the importance of developing metaphorical thinking skills in students within the framework of English as a Foreign Language(EFL)reading courses at the tertiary educational level.Metaphorical thinking is viewed as the ability to envisage the world figuratively,perceive associatively,and express oneself creatively.It is crucial to recognize metaphors in texts,interpret the complex images they evoke,and generate new metaphors.It is especially needful in the current era of clip thinking and fragmented information processing when students often approach content superficially rather than comprehensively,leading to decreased cognitive activity and a diminished capacity to understand literature.To foster metaphorical thinking,the paper suggests building a text associative-semantic field focusing on metaphors.Due to its hierarchical structure,which can be envisioned as a dense nucleus surrounded by a central region of synonyms and further enveloped by a periphery of more loosely associated linguistic units,the text associative-semantic field is seen as a potent solution for facilitating improved visualization and more holistic comprehension of information,allowing students for expanding their vocabulary and strengthening associative connections.Notably,the study highlights analyzing the metaphors of emotional states as they contribute significantly to a more profound interpretation of the text,understanding the writer’s unique style,deepening the students’engagement with the book,and expanding their emotional experiences.展开更多

This study explores the influence of after-school tutoring on reading comprehension skills of students with dyslexia(DD)in grades 3-5 in China and its participating factors.Using a mixed-methods design,the quantitativ...This study explores the influence of after-school tutoring on reading comprehension skills of students with dyslexia(DD)in grades 3-5 in China and its participating factors.Using a mixed-methods design,the quantitative data(GORT-4 reading test)of 50 public primary school students in Qingdao and their parents’feedback were collected through questionnaires,supplemented by semi-structured interviews with eight parents for qualitative analysis.The findings are as follows:(1)Family socioeconomic status and parents’awareness of DD are the key factors to participate in after-school counseling;(2)The students who participated in the after-school counseling performed significantly better in the GORT-4 comprehension test(P<0.05);(3)Counseling makes up for the lack of classroom learning through personalized strategies(such as multi-sensory teaching and phonological awareness training),but parents’psychological support is the core of successful intervention.The necessity of early targeted intervention was emphasized,and practical enlightenment was provided for the educational support system of DD students in China.展开更多

This study investigates how English morphological awareness contributes to reading comprehension in beginner Chinese EFL learners.The research examines both derivational and compounding morphological awareness at mult...This study investigates how English morphological awareness contributes to reading comprehension in beginner Chinese EFL learners.The research examines both derivational and compounding morphological awareness at multiple levels(identification,discrimination,and manipulation)on English reading comprehension and explores whether their contributions are mediated by vocabulary knowledge.Data were collected from 71 Grade 9 students using various morphological awareness tasks,a vocabulary test,and a reading comprehension assessment.Mixed-effects regression and mediation analyses revealed that all components of morphological awareness,except derivational identification,significantly contributed to reading comprehension.Derivational manipulation was found to have both direct and indirect effects on reading comprehension,partially mediated by vocabulary knowledge.In contrast,compounding awareness influenced reading comprehension primarily through its effect on vocabulary.These findings provide a more nuanced understanding of how different facets of morphological awareness impact reading comprehension in EFL contexts,offering valuable insights for vocabulary and reading instruction.展开更多
