This paper presents an efficient numerical tool for the prediction of railway dynamic response.A behavior calibration of the infinite Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on continuous viscoelastic foundation is proposed.Constitutive laws of the discrete elements are determined for a rectilinear ballasted track.A three-dimensional model coupled with an adaptive meshing scheme is employed to calibrate the beam model impedances by finding the similarity between the output signals using the genetic algorithm. The model shows an important performance with significant reduction in computational effort. This study emphasizes the major impact of the excitation characteristics on the parameters of the discrete models. 展开更多

With the continuous development of the offshore wind industry, the design concept of composite foundation has been given attention in the past decade. This paper presents an accurate method for investigating the horizontal vibration of monopile-friction wheel composite foundations in layered saturated soil.Firstly, the three-dimensional continuum mechanics theory with the range of linear elasticity is introduced to calculate the frictional resistance distributed on the upper soil surface. Then, the resistances of multilayered soils and inviscid seawater to the pile shaft under horizontal harmonic excitation are obtained using Novak's plane strain model,Biot's porous media theory and radiationwave theory.Thirdly, the expressions for the deformation, bending moment and internal force of the Euler-Bernoulli pile are derived using the boundary conditions with definitephysical meaning and transfer matrix method.By comparing with the results of 1g laboratory test and the idealized formula reported by the literature, the rationality and accuracy of the developed dynamical model can be verified. Finally, this paper conducts a series of worked examples to investigate the influencesof the elastic modulus and thickness of three-layer saturated soil and the location of interlayer soil on the horizontal dynamic vibration of composite foundation. The results show that an increase in elastic modulus of the surface soil is an effective way to improve the dynamic stability of the composite foundation in service conditions. The conclusions drawn from the numerical examples can develop some guidelines for the current foundation design of offshore wind turbines. 展开更多

Conventionally, foundations have been classified as shallow or deep in routine civil engineering practice. However, due to recent developments, two other approaches,semi-deep and ground modification foundations, are now available, complicating foundation categorization.Accordingly,a new concept for foundation categorization is introduced in this paper based on insights into the theory of structure analysis.Based on the form aspect, foundation systems can be categorized as one-dimensional(linear),two-dimensional(planar),and threedimensional(volumetric).Based on the load transfer aspect, foundations can also be categorized as vector-acting(piles),section or surface-acting(rafts and shells),and block-acting(piled rafts). As a step toward implementing this new categorization scheme,a database of 22 cases has been compiled, symbolizing novel introduced foundation systems. This compilation involves structures such as offshore jackets,high-rise buildings, towers and storages, and diverse geomaterials.Among them,a few have been selected for detailed evaluation, emphasizing influential factors in foundation selection, comprising superstructure, subsoil condition, foundation system, circumferential conditions, and supplementary considerations, that is,constructional and sustainability-based issues.Lessons learned from experience and these knowledge-based cases have described for foundation selection and implementation.Geotechnical and practical aspects with critical components have been realized as major performance assessment and comparison factors.Foundation systems have been compared and ranked using the improved analytic hierarchy process approach. Finally, four categories of buildings, from low-rise to towers and four prevailing levels of soil strength, from soft to very hard, have been considered to propose a perspective for building substructure implementation, adapted via relevant cases.Overall, the introduced categorization is recognized as an efficient algorithm for the experimentation of appropriate foundations for specific structures and subsoil conditions. 展开更多

Installing internal bulkheads in a composite bucket foundation alters the rotational symmetry characteristic of a single-compartment bucket foundation, consequently influencing the stress distribution within the bucket and surrounding soil.During the seabed penetration of a spudcan from a jack-up wind turbine installation vessel,an angle may form between the spudcan’s axis and the axis of symmetry of the adjacent composite bucket foundation in the horizontal plane.Such a misalignment may affect load distribution and the non-uniform interaction between the foundation, soil, and spudcan, ultimately influencing the foundation’s stability. This study employs physical model tests to ascertain the trends in end resistance during spudcan penetration in sand, the extent of soil disturbance, and the backflow condition. The finite element coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method is validated and utilized to determine the range of penetration angles that induce alterations in the maximum vertical displacement and tilt rate of the composite bucket foundation in sand. The differential contact stress distribution at the base of the bucket is analyzed, with qualitative criteria for sand backflow provided.Findings demonstrate that the maximum vertical displacement and tilt rate of the composite bucket foundation display a“wave-like”variation with the increasing spudcan penetration angle, peaking when the angle between the spudcan and bulkhead is the smallest.Stress distribution is predominantly concentrated at the base and apex of the bucket, becoming increasingly uneven as the penetration angle deviates from the foundation’s symmetry axis. The maximum stress gradually shifts to the junction of the bulkhead and bucket bottom on the side with the shortest net distance from the spudcan.Considering the in-place stability and stress state of the composite bucket foundation is therefore imperative, and particular attention should be paid to the foundation’s state when the angle between the spudcan and bulkhead is small. 展开更多

Monocolumn composite bucket foundation is a new type of offshore wind energy foundation. Its bearing characteristics under shallow bedrock conditions and complex geological conditions have not been extensively studied. Therefore,to analyze its bearing characteristics under complex conditions-such as silty soil, chalky soil, and shallow bedrock-this paper employs finite element software to establish various soil combination scenarios. The load-displacement curves of the foundations under these scenarios are calculated to subsequently evaluate the horizontal ultimate bearing capacity. This study investigates the effects of shallow bedrock depth, the type of soil above the bedrock, the thickness of layered soil, and the quality of layered soil on the bearing characteristics of the monocolumn composite bucket foundation.Based on the principle of single-variable control, the ultimate bearing capacity characteristics of the foundation under different conditions are compared. The distribution of soil pressure inside and outside the bucket wall on the compressed side of the foundation, along with the plastic strain of the soil at the base of the foundation,is also analyzed. In conclusion, shallow bedrock somewhat reduces foundation bearing capacity.Under shallow bedrock conditions, the degree of influence on foundation bearing capacity characteristics can considerably vary on different upper soils. The thickness of each soil layer and the depth to bedrock in stratified soils also affect the bearing capacity of the foundation. The findings of this paper provide a theoretical reference for related foundation design and construction. In practice, the bearing performance of the foundation can be enhanced by improvingthe soil quality in the bucket, adjusting the penetration depth, adjusting the percentage of different types of soil layers in the bucket, and applying other technical construction methods. 展开更多

Deformations in high fill foundations comprising soil–stone mixtures must be accurately predicted to ensure construction quality and long-term operational safety. However, existing computational and analytical methods inadequately capture their complex mechanical behavior. We conducted a series of triaxial tests on unsaturated soil samples collected from a high fill project site in northwestern China under three stress paths. The incremental nonlinear and elastoplastic constitutive models for unsaturated soils were modified, and a calculation method was developed for the vertical and lateral deformations of high fill foundations using the layered summation approach. The results indicate that for soil samples with the same mixing ratio(m)and compaction coefficient(n),the strength of the sample and its tendency to exhibit shear dilation increase with the net confining pressure or matric suction.Additionally, the stress–strain curve of the soil sample gradually changes from the strain-hardening type to the ideal elastoplastic type as the compaction coefficient increases. Moreover, the compaction coefficient is an important factor influencing the magnitude of yield stress and yield suction in soil samples, and the yield points of both are similar in shape to the loadingcollapse(LC)and suction increase(SI)yield lines obtained using the Barcelona model in the net mean stress-generalized shear stress(p-s)plane,respectively.The modified incremental nonlinear instantaneous model simultaneously considers the effects of the compaction coefficient, suction and mixing ratio, and the model parameter can be simplified to the tangential modulus expression in the Duncan-Chang model when the suction is zero.Furthermore, the modified elastoplastic constitutive model, which considers the effects of the net mean stress, suction and partial stress, can be simplified to the elastoplastic constitutive relationship of saturated soil when the suction is zero. The proposed deformation calculation method, based on the layered summation theory,is applicable to both elastic and elastoplastic foundation states,as confirmed through numerical simulations. Our work can be used as a reference for the calculation of foundation deformation in similar mixed material high fill projects. 展开更多

Based on reasonable assumptions that simplified the calculational model,a simple and practical method was proposed to calculate the post-construction settlement of high-speed railway bridge pile foundation by using the Mesri creep model to describe the soil characteristics and the Mindlin-Geddes method considering pile diameter to calculate the vertical additional stress of pile bottom.A program named CPPS was designed for this method to calculate the post-construction settlement of a high-speed railway bridge pile foundation. The result indicates that the post-construction settlement in 100 years meets the requirements of the engineering specifications, and in the first two decades, the post-construction settlement is about 80% of its total settlement, while the settlement in the rest eighty years tends to be stable.Compared with the measured settlement after laying railway tracks, the calculational result is closed to that of the measured, and the results are conservative with a high computational accuracy. It is noted that the method can be used to calculate the post-construction settlement for the preliminary design of high-speed railway bridge pile foundation. 展开更多

Under the combination of currents and waves, seabed scour occurs around offshore wind turbine foundations, which affects the stability and safe operation of offshore wind turbines. In this study, physical model experiments under unidirectional flow, bidirectional flow, and wave-current interactions with different flow directions around the pile group foundation were first conducted to investigate the development of scour around the pile group foundation.Additionally, a three-dimensional scour numerical model was established via the open-source software REEF3D to simulate the flow field and scour around the prototype-scale foundation. The impact of flow on scour was discussed.Under unidirectional flow, scour equilibrium was reached more quickly, with the maximum scour depth reaching approximately 1.2 times the pile diameter and the extent of the scour hole spanning about 4.9 times the pile diameter.Compared with those under unidirectional flow, the scour depths under combinations of currents and waves, as well as bidirectional flow, were slightly smaller. However, the morphology of scour holes was more uniform and symmetrical. The numerical simulation results show good agreement with the experimental data, demonstrating the impact of varying flow directions on the velocity distribution around the foundation, the morphology of scour holes, and the location of the maximum scour depth. 展开更多

Long-pile groups of railway foundation undergo excessive settlements after groundwater reductions, which may exceed the settlement limit and threaten the safe operation of high-speed trains. However, the effect of groundwater reduction on a long-pile group(greater than 20 m in length)has not been fully understood, especially in respect of repeated reductions. In this study,a centrifuge test was conducted to investigate the responses of pile groups in silty soils subjected to repeated falls in the water table. The behavior of the piles was discussed based both on the test and on 3D numerical analyses. With the derived coef-ficientβfor the axial force evaluation of the pile, the effect of lowering the water table on the railway pile foundation could be seen. Results of the tests and numerical analyses indicated that the water table decline significantly increased the down-drag and axial force of the pile, causing significant settlement.A longer pile presented a larger axial force at the neutral point.Nevertheless, the incremental percentage of the axial force decreased with increasing pile length with the same water table reduction.Because of group effect, the displacement of soil next to the center pile was smaller than that near the corner piles and showed a similar trend as the axial force of the pile.As the water table fell, the static load ratio affecting the progress of pile settlement increased dis-advantageously,possibly inducing excessive pile settlement.A design method for railway pile foundations taking account of lowering groundwater was proposed with an example application, which provided a reference for similar projects. 展开更多

The process and characteristics of loading on high-speed railway bridge pile foundation were firstly obtained by means of field research and analysis, and the corresponding loading function was presented.One-dimensional consolidation equation of elastic multilayered soils was then established with single drainage or double drainages under multilevel loading. Moreover, the formulas for calculating effective stress and settlement were derived from the Laplace numerical inversion transform. The three-dimensional composite analysis method of bridge pile group was improved, where the actual load conditions of pile foundation could be simulated, and the consolidation characteristics of soil layers beneath pile were also taken into account.Eventually,a corresponding program named LTPGS was developed to improve the calculation efficiency. The comparison between long-term settlement obtained from the proposed method and the in-situ measurements of pile foundation was illustrated, and a close agreement is obtained. The error between computed and measured results is less than 1 mm,and it gradually reduces with time.It is shown that the proposed method can effectively simulate the long-term settlement of pile foundation and program LTPGS can provide a reliable estimation. 展开更多

A number of dry bridges have been built to substitute for the roadbed on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway,China. The aim of this study was to investigate the exothermic process of cast-in-place (CIP) pile foundation of a dry bridge and its harm to the stability of nearby frozen ground. We present 3D heat conduction functions of a concrete pile and of frozen ground with related boundaries. Our analysis is based on the theory of heat conduction and the exponent law describing the adiabatic temperature rise caused by hydration heat. Results under continuous and initial conditions were combined to establish a finite element model of a CIP pile-frozen ground system for a dry bridge under actual field conditions in cold regions.Numerical results indicated that the process could effectively simulate the exothermic process of CIP pile foundation.Thermal disturbance to frozen ground under a long dry bridge caused by the casting temperature and hydration heat of CIP piles was substantial and long-lasting.The simulated thermal analysis results agreed with field measurements and some significant rules relating to the problem were deduced and conclusions reached. 展开更多

There are a number of design procedures which have been developed to determine the appropriate thickness of trackbed layers on a railway track in order to reduce train induced stresses to an acceptable level thus ensuring that subgrade failure does not occur prematurely. This paper briefly describes four such procedures and compares the thickness of trackbed layers proposed by each for a number of hypothetical situations. To demonstrate further the suitability of each procedure, two existing sites in the UK are analysed and the trackbed layer thickness given by each procedure is then compared. The research shows that the procedures do not give consistent results. Subsequently it is suggested that it is important to consider other aspects in addition to the prescription of a suitable thickness of trackbed layers in any new build, renewal or remediation scheme. 展开更多

The problems noted in the structures built on wooden foundation piles in a lake environment required various works to strengthen over time. This work mainly consists of the recovery of the foundation mass by micropiles due to the increase in loads on the structures,or the recovery of the foundation mass by injection, which is carried out when voids form between the ground and the wooden foundation elements. The high cost of foundation reinforcement methods led the National Agency for the Development of Tourist Heritage in Benin(ANPT)to replace the wooden foundation piles with reinforced concrete piles in the implementation of the project“reinventing the lakeside city of Ganvié”.This article presents an artisanal technology for the creation of reinforced concrete foundation piles in a lake environment.On-site examples made it possible to evaluate the performance of this artisanal implementation technique. The installation of these piles is carried out following manual drilling, followed by the installation of reinforcement and the pouring of concrete on site. The implementation of reinforced concrete foundation piles in place of the wooden ones studied in this article only impacted the infrastructure of the homes of the lakeside town of Ganviébut not the superstructure, which preserved the old traditional wooden architecture and thatched roofs. Thus, the ambition to move this city of Ganviéfrom the stage of a lake village to that of a floating city is very successful. This will contribute to improving the environment and living conditions of the populations and will promote economic development through tourism. 展开更多

The existing analytical models for umbrella arch method(UAM)based on elastic foundation beams often overlook the influence of the surrounding soil beyond the beam edges on the shear stresses acting on the beam.Consequently, such models fail to adequately reflect the continuity characteristics of soil deformation.Leveraging the Pasternak foundation-Euler beam model, this study considers the generalized shear force on the beam to account for the influence of soil outside the beam ends on the shear stress. An analytical model for the deformation and internal forces of finite-length beams subjected to arbitrary loads is derived based on the initial parameter method under various conditions. The mechanical model of the elastic foundation beam for advanced umbrella arch under typical tunnel excavation cycles is established, yielding analytical solutions for the longitudinal response of the umbrella arch. The reliability of the analytical model is verified with the existing test data. The improved model addresses anomalies in existing models, such as abnormal upward deformation in the loosened segment and maximum deflection occurring within the soil mass.Additionally, dimensionless characteristic parameters reflecting the relative stiffness between the umbrella arch structure and the foundation soil are proposed. Results indicate that the magnitude of soil characteristic parameters significantly influences the deformation and internal forces of the umbrella arch.Within common ranges of soil values, the maximum deformation and internal forces of the umbrella arch under semi-logarithmic coordinates exhibit nearly linear decay with decreasing soil characteristic parameters. The impact of tunnel excavation height on the stress of unsupported sections of the umbrella arch is minor, but it is more significant for umbrella arch buried within the soil mass.Conversely, the influence of tunnel excavation advance on the umbrella arch is opposite. 展开更多

Gastrointestinal(GI)cancers represent a major global health concern due to their high incidence and mortality rates.Foundation models(FMs),also referred to as large models, represent a novel class of artificial intelligence technologies that have demonstrated considerable potential in addressing these challenges. These models encompass large language models(LLMs),vision FMs(VFMs),and multimodal LLMs(MLLMs),all of which utilize transformer architectures and self-supervised pre-training on extensive unlabeled datasets to achieve robust cross-domain generalization. This review delineates the principal applications of these models:LLMs facilitate the structuring of clinical narratives, extraction of insights from medical records, and enhancement of physician-patient communication;VFMs are employed in the analysis of endoscopic, radiological, and pathological images for lesion detection and staging;MLLMs integrate heterogeneous data modalities, including imaging, textual information, and genomic data,to support diagnostic processes, treatment prediction, and prognostic evaluation.Despite these promising developments, several challenges remain, such as the need for data standardization, limited diversity within training datasets, substantial computational resource requirements, and ethical-legal concerns. In conclusion,FMs exhibit significant potential to advance research and clinical management of GI cancers.Future research efforts should prioritize the refinement of these models, promote international collaborations, and adopt interdisciplinary approaches.Such a comprehensive strategy is essential to fully harness the capabilities of FMs,driving substantial progress in the fight against GI malignancies. 展开更多

Establish an efficacy evaluation method for foundation products in vivo and vitro. The hiding power, whiteness, waterproof and anti-sweat effect were evaluated in vitro test, where CR ratio,Individual Type Angle (ITA°) and chromatic aberration (E) were measured as evaluation indicators by standard black/white cardboard, artificial leather and artificial sweat. In clinical assessment, the anti-stain,waterproof,anti-sweat effect of the foundation products were evaluated through the ΔE change, before and after the treatment of products by staining, wetting, sweating in forearm skin. There were significant differences in CR ratio of different types of samples on standard black and white cardboards (P<0.05),ITA° of artificial leather has a significant increase after treatment (P<0.05),?E﹤1.5 in black cloth after dipping test, while ΔE﹤1.5 in leather after water and artificial sweat treatment.Clinical assessment showed that ?E ﹤50%,which had no significant difference in human skin color, before and after the test (P>0.05).The change trend of efficacy evaluation in vitro test was basically consistent with that of visual evaluation and clinical assessment, indicated that the efficacy evaluation methods of foundation products in vivo and vitro are intuitive, quantifiable, and can be used to evaluate the efficacy of foundation products. 展开更多
