A total of 103 species in 67 genera of Thysanoptera are here listed from New Caledonia, in contrast to the 68 species in 44 genera that were recorded 23 years ago. Of the 103 species, 22 are not known from anywhere else in the world. Thus, up to 80% of these insect species have arrived in New Caledonia from other countries, with a very high proportion likely to have been introduced through modern trading patterns, despite vigorous efforts by quarantine services.展开更多

The results showed that 163 batches of alien pests were intercepted, including 2 batches of quarantine weeds and they both were Italian cocklebur. According to the statistics of original countries, the intercepted hides from 21 countries all had alien pests, in which Australia was the largest number of batches and species of alien pests. The analysis results showed that there was severe risk in the imported hides carrying alien pests, thus to effectively prevent the invasion of alien pests to our country, several quarantine measures should be taken in the future, such as enhancing the quarantine inspection in ports, and promoting the personnel ability of interception and species identification of alien pests.展开更多

However, data on the distribution of invasive species after their introduction and research on the factors that determine their geographical distribution are lacking. This study analyzed the distributional trends of invasive species in China and the drivers for such trends, by identifying the effect of international trade from a dynamic analysis of 13 main invasive insect pests in three time periods - before China’s reform and opening up in 1978, from 1979 to 2001, and after China’s accession to the World Trade Organization in 2001. The results showed that the abundance of invasive species gradually decreased from south to north and from southeast coast to inland. Guangdong(442 species) and Yunnan(404 species) provinces have the highest abundance of invasive species. Among the 13 key invasive insects investigated, 3, 10 and 13 occurred chronologically in the three periods, and invaded 7, 28 and 34 provinces, respectively. Alien pests are found to invade China through Xinjiang, the Bohai Rim and the southeast. Value of imports was a strong predictor of the number of invasive species in China, and followed by temperature heterogeneity, in explaining the richness pattern of invasive animal, plants and insects, but not that of microorganisms. This study provides a scientific basis for furthering international quarantine and effective invasive species control.展开更多

The quarantine affected 4000 acres of fruit bearing commercial avocado groves. Approved post-harvest treatments for B. dorsalis and avocado included in the USDA Treatment Manual were acceptable for immediate certification and movement of fresh avocados from the quarantine area. However, it was unknown if Florida avocados would meet quality standards (US combination grade) after the treatments. Three post-harvest treatments that combine methyl bromide fumigation and cold storage periods were tested on six avocado varieties from Florida. The treatments differed in the durations of the fumigation and cold treatment periods. A seven day transit period at 8.3°C (47°F) was added to account for the time when the fruit leaves the packing house until it is sold by retailers. None of the six varieties had met the US combination grade after the treatments and transit period. Treated fruit exhibited both internal (pulp) and external (skin) damage. Damage was attributed to the fumigation component of the treatment, but the six varieties tolerated the cold portion of the treatment. Damage by fumigation ranged from 26% - 100%. In general, the longer the fumigation period the worse the effect. The need for alternative post-harvest treatments for Florida avocados is discussed.展开更多

Therefore, the impact ofsporadic cases of COVID-19 and isolation measures on mental health and sleep in different groupsof people need to be analyzed.AIMTo clarify the severity of psychological problems and insomnia of staff and community residentsaround a hospital with sporadic cases of COVID-19, and their relationship with quarantinelocation and long-term changes.METHODSA cross-sectional survey was conducted on community residents and medical staff. Many of thesemedical staff had been subjected to different places of quarantine. Community residents did notexperience quarantine. Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), acute stress disorder scale(ASDS) and insomnia severity index (ISI) were used to evaluate anxiety and depression, acutestress disorder symptoms, and the severity of insomnia. Additionally, we conducted a 1-yearfollow-up study on medical staff, with related scales measurement immediately after and one yearafter the 2-wk quarantine period.RESULTSWe included 406 medical staff and 226 community residents. The total scores of ISI and subscale inHADS of community residents were significantly higher than that of medical staff. Furtheranalysis of medical staff who experienced quarantine showed that 134 were quarantined in hotels,70 in hospitals and 48 at home. Among all subjects, the proportions of HADS, ASDS and ISI scoresabove normal cutoff value were 51.94%, 19.17% and 31.11%, respectively. Multivariable logisticregression analysis found that subjects with higher total ASDS scores had a greater risk to developanxiety and depression. The total ISI score for medical staff in hotel quarantine was significantlyhigher than those in home quarantine. Total 199 doctors and nurses who completed the 1-yearfollow-up study. Compared with baseline, HADS and ASDS scores decreased significantly oneyear after the end of quarantine, while ISI scores did not change significantly.CONCLUSIONSporadic COVID-19 cases had a greater psychological impact on residents in surroundingcommunities, mainly manifested as insomnia and depressive symptoms. Hotel quarantineaggravated the severity of insomnia in medical staff, whose symptoms lasted ≥ 1 year.展开更多

The e...The threat of wood-inhabiting fungi to American hardwood forests, lumber industries, and tourism has enormous eco-nomic significance, and the aesthetic and dollar values of properties are potentially disastrous. The efficacy of methyl iodide (MeI) and sulfuryl fluoride (SF) for eradicating wood-inhabiting fungus, Ceratocystis fagacearum was assessed in wood blocks of birch, maple, poplar and red pine based on in-vitro experiments. In a series of replicated controlled experiments, wood blocks were inoculated with a 1g macerated mycelium/spores mixture of C. fagacearum and fumigated with 160 and 240 g/m3 of MeI, SF and methyl bromide (MeBr) as control) for 24, 48, and 72 hours. Analysis of variance showed that fumigant types, fumigant concentrations, and exposure time as well as their interactions (C x T) had an effect on C. fagacearum recovery on tested wood species. Colonization of birch, maple, red pine, and poplar by C. fagacearum was significantly greater in non-fumigated samples than fumigated samples. C. fagacearum was greatly inhibited by MeI than SF in all wood species tested. Overall, the C x T products of ≤ 4.108 g-h/m3 for MeI and ≤ 8.755 g-h/m3 for SF were not effective in killing the fungus. These results suggest that longer treatment exposure time might achieve the goal of complete eradication of C. fagacearum and imply that MeI performed as well as MeBr in killing the fungus in some wood species by exposure time combination. Overall, MeI was most effective in killing the fungus than SF under the conditions of this study with potential implications for quarantine use.展开更多

The disease is not only fatal to the human but also several primate species many of which are endangered by now. YF is caused by the yellow fever virus (YFV). While YFV was one of the most feared infectious diseases in the 18th and 19th century, the overall disease burden has been greatly reduced through an effective vector (mosquito) control and the development of the live-attenuated vaccine, YFV-17D. However, recent outbreaks in previously non-endemic areas have risen intense awareness among scientists and the public and remind us that YFV cannot be forgotten and containing it needs to remain a global health priority. Notably, the 11 imported yellow fever cases to China;hence the whole Asia-Pacific region, in 2016 alone, highlight that YFV may pose a threat to a large population which is intensified by increasing human migration and an extremely low vaccination rate. This paper assesses the possibility of a new round of epidemics of YFV, indicating that the virus should indeed be recognized as a re-emerging threat, and offers suggestions on how to prevent it. Stricter vaccine regulation and border check should be applied, as well as further research into alternative vaccines. More attention and efforts should be paid to fighting against the disease.展开更多

Synthetic pyrethroid insecticide beta-cyfluthrin has been evaluated against developmental stages of RPW under laboratory conditions. These stages were exposed to residual film of the insecticide on transparent cups using a Potter precision laboratory spray tower. Percent mortality of males and females were recorded 0.5, 2.0 and 24 h after treatment. Furthermore, date palm offshoots were infested in mesh house, two months later, offshoots treated with 300 ppm (p.g/mL) beta-eyfluthrin using two methods dipping and injection. Bioassay test showed beta-cyfluthrin at 300 ppm caused 86,7% and 93,3% mortality against males and females after 2 h respectively with LC50 135.74 and 109.4 ppm. By increasing the concentration at 400 ppm, mortality reached 100% against males and females after 24 h, Developmental stages, eggs and larvae were more sensitive toward the insecticide, where at 120 ppm no eggs hatched after 96 h and 86.7% mortality was recorded at 200 ppm against larvae after 30 rain with LC50 93.19 ppm. In addition, dipping method of date palm offshoots in 300 ppm beta-cyfluthrin was a very convenient way to control all RPW stages compared to injection method. So, it possible to recommend this method for treating the date palm offshoots in such insecticide as one of the most important elements of integrated pest management for standardizing insecticide based quarantine protocols.展开更多

文摘In March 2020,the WHO defined the diffusion of novel coronavirus,Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)as pandemic.[1-3]As a consequence, the Italian Government among others has enforced quarantine on the population to contain the diffusion of the infection.Quarantine refers to the separation of communities who have been exposed to an infectious disease.[1-3]Elderly people's lives have been drastically affected by the lockdown and the fear related to the disease’s potential effects and transmission.Fear of contracting COVID-19 is on the rise due to the death toll and alarming news reports in the media.[2,3].

文摘The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)has aroused a global alert. To release social panic and guide future schedules, this article proposes a novel mathematical model, the Delay Differential Epidemic Analyzer(D2EA),to analyze the dynamics of epidemic and forecast its future trends.Based on the traditional Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered(SEIR)model,the D2EA model innovatively introduces a set of quarantine states and applies both ordinary differential equations and delay differential equations to describe the transition between two states.Potential variations of practical factors are further considered to reveal the true epidemic picture. In the experiment part,we use the D^2EA model to simulate the epidemic in Hubei Province.Fitting to the collected real data as non-linear optimization, the D^2EA model forecasts that the accumulated confirmed infected cases in Hubei Province will reach the peak at the end of February and then steady down.We also evaluate the effectiveness of the quarantine measures and schedule the date to reopen Hubei Province.

文摘BACKGROUNDIn the post-pandemic era, the emergence of sporadic cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the scale of the pandemic are unpredictable. Hotel quarantineaggravated the severity of insomnia in medical staff, whose symptoms lasted ≥ 1 year.
文摘The threat of wood-inhabiting fungi to American hardwood forests, lumber industries, and tourism has enormous eco-nomic significance, and the aesthetic and dollar values of properties are potentially disastrous. Overall, MeI was most effective in killing the fungus than SF under the conditions of this study with potential implications for quarantine use.
文摘Yellow fever (YF) is arguably one of the most notorious infectious diseases in the world. More attention and efforts should be paid to fighting against the disease.
文摘The red palm weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorusferrugineus is one of the most invasive insect pests causing massive damage on date palms over the world. So, it possible to recommend this method for treating the date palm offshoots in such insecticide as one of the most important elements of integrated pest management for standardizing insecticide based quarantine protocols.
文摘Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection has affected the entire world, causing the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic since it was first discovered in Wuhan,China in December 2019.Among the clinical presentation of the disease,in addition to fever, fatigue, cough, dyspnea, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, infected patients may also experience neurological and psychiatric repercussions during the course of the disease and as a post-COVID-19 sequelae. Thus, headache, dizziness, olfactory and gustatory dysfunction, cerebrovascular disorders, neuromuscular abnormalities, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder can occur both from the infection itself and from social distancing and quarantine.According to current evidence about this infection, the virus has the ability to infect the central nervous system(CNS)via angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2)receptors on host cells.Several studies have shown the presence of ACE2 in nerve cells and nasal mucosa,as well as transmembrane serine protease 2,key points for interaction with the viral Spike glycoprotein and entry into the CNS,being olfactory tract and blood-brain barrier, through hematogenous dissemination, potential pathways. Thus, the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the CNS supports the development of neuropsychiatric symptoms. The management of these manifestations seems more complex, given that the dense parenchyma and impermeability of brain tissue, despite protecting the brain from the infectious process, may hinder virus elimination.Still, some alternatives used in non-COVID-19 situations may lead to worse prognosis of acute respiratory syndrome, requiring caution. Therefore, the aim of this review is to bring more current points related to this infection in the CNS,as well as the repercussions of the isolation involved by the pandemic and to present perspectives on interventions in this scenario.
