Simulation of Underground Reservoir Stability of Pumped Storage Power Station Based on Fluid-Structure Coupling

Based on global initiatives such as the clean energy transition and the development of renewable energy,the pumped storage power station has become a new and significant way of energy storage and regulation,and its construction environment is more complex than that of a traditional reservoir.In particular,the stability of the rock strata in the underground reservoirs is affected by the seepage pressure and rock stress,which presents some challenges in achieving engineering safety and stability.Using the advantages of the numerical simulation method in dealing deal with nonlinear problems in engineering stability,in this study,the stability of the underground reservoir of the Shidangshan(SDS)pumped storage power station was numerically calculated and quantitatively analyzed based on fluid-structure coupling theory,providing an important reference for the safe operation and management of the underground reservoir.First,using the COMSOL software,a suitablemechanicalmodel was created in accordance with the geological structure and project characteristics of the underground reservoir.Next,the characteristics of the stress field,displacement field,and seepage field after excavation of the underground reservoir were simulated in light of the seepage effect of groundwater on the nearby rock of the underground reservoir.Finally,based on the construction specifications and Molar-Coulomb criterion,a thorough evaluation of the stability of the underground reservoir was performed through simulation of the filling and discharge conditions and anti-seepage strengthening measures.The findings demonstrate that the numerical simulation results have a certain level of reliability and are in accordance with the stress measured in the project area.The underground reservoir excavation resulted in a maximum displacement value of the rock mass around the caverns of 3.56 mm in a typical section,and the safety coefficient of the parts,as determined using the Molar-Coulomb criterion,was higher than 1,indicating that the project as a whole is in a stable state. 展开更多

Baoying pumping station is a part of source pumping stations in East Route Project of South-to-North Water Transfer in China. Aiming at the characteristics of head varying, and making use of the function of pump adjustable blade, mathematical models of pumping station optimal operation are established and solved with genetic algorithm. For different total pumping discharge and total pumping volume of water per day, in order to minimize pumping station operation cost, the number and operation duties of running pump units are respectively determined at different periods of time in a day. The results indicate that the saving of electrical cost is significantly effected by the schemes of adjusting blade angles and time-varying electrical price when pumping certain water volume of water per day, and compared with conventional operation schemes (namely, the schemes of pumping station operation at design blade angles based on certain pumping discharge), the electrical cost is saved by 4.73%-31.27%. Also, compared with the electrical cost of conventional operation schemes, the electrical cost is saved by 2.03%-5.79% by the schemes of adjusting blade angles when pumping certain discharge. 展开更多

Based on the characteristics of large flow rate , low head , short annual operation time , and high reliability of the city flood-control pumping stations , a new-type shaft tubular pumping system featuring a shaft suction box and a siphon-type discharge passage with a vacuum breaker as the cutoff device was developed , which possesses such advantages as simple structure , reliable cutoff , and high energy performance.Taking some pumping stations as the case studies , in the light of the specified operation conditions , the hydraulic optimal design of the shaft-type tubular pumping system was determined and the optimized shape of the system was recommended.The performance prediction based on the computational fluid dynamics methodology was determined and the model test verification was conducted.The results show that the predicted data agree with the experimental head and efficiency so that both methods can be used to determine the performance of a real pumping station.Finally , the in-situ measurements of a pumping station during the commissioning period further verified that the shaft-type tubular pumping station with a siphon discharge passage is of higher efficiency , more reliable and stable. 展开更多

Method of calculating none over-loadedprobability of motor by integration by successive reductions is put forward and then relationbetween power spare coefficient and none over-loaded reliability of electric motor is established.Influences of all factors on pump shaft power being considered completely; power spare coefficientsof motor are calculated in three kinds of heads (changing and unchanging), two kinds of dirty-outconditions. Electrical motor power spare coefficients should be chosen as 1.20 approx 1.44, 1.11approx 1.19, 1.09 approx.14 respectively when pump heads are 4, 7, 9.5 m. The results mean much toreasonable choose of electrical motors in large pump stations, increasing reliability of pump unitsand saving equipment investment. 展开更多

Three-dimensional CFD simulation of inlet structure flow in pumping station based on Eulerian solid- liquid two-phase flow model

Sediment deposition in the pumping station has a huge negative impact on unit operation.The three-dimensional CFD method has been used to simulate inlet structure flow in pumping station based on the Eulerian solid- liquid two-phase flow model. The numerical results of the preliminary scheme show that sediment deposition occurs in the forebay of pumping station because of poor flow pattern therein. In order to improve hydraulic configuration in the forebay,one modified measure reconstructs water diversion weir shape,and another measure sets a water retaining sill in the approach channel. The simulation results of the modified scheme prove that back flow in the forebay has been eliminated and the sediment deposition region has also been reduced. 展开更多

A novel approach for quantifying upper reservoir leakage

During the operational phases of the upper reservoir in a pumped storage power station, the water level, leakage area, and hydraulic gradient of the upper reservoir alter dynamically due to the cyclic pumping and draining activities. The rising groundwater level during storage introduces distinct leakage conditions within the reservoir basin, characterized by unsaturated, partially saturated, and saturated states. Consequently, reservoir basin leakage exhibits variability across these states. To address this issue, this study formulated rational assumptions corresponding to the three leakage states in a reservoir basin and derived analytical expressions for seepage calculation based on Darcy's law and the principles governing groundwater flow refraction. A case study was conducted to investigate the relationship between various factors and leakage. The results showed that leakage primarily depended on the permeability of the impermeable layer in the reservoir basin. The upper reservoir leakage was estimated, and the calculated leakage generally agreed with the measurements, offering insights into the leakage mechanism of the Liyang pumped storage power station. In addition, the reasons for disparities between measured and calculated leakage were analyzed, and the reliability of the developed method was validated. The findings of this study provide a foundation for the seepage control design of upstream reservoirs in similar projects. 展开更多

With the establishment of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” goals in China, along with the development of new power systems and ongoing electricity market reforms, pumped-storage power stations (PSPSs) will increasingly play a significant role in power systems. Therefore, this study focuses on trading and bidding strategies for PSPSs in the electricity market. Firstly, a comprehensive framework for PSPSs participating in the electricity energy and frequency regulation (FR) ancillary service market is proposed. Subsequently, a two-layer trading model is developed to achieve joint clearing in the energy and frequency regulation markets. The upper-layer model aims to maximize the revenue of the power station by optimizing the bidding strategies using a Q-learning algorithm. The lower-layer model minimized the total electricity purchasing cost of the system. Finally, the proposed bi-level trading model is validated by studying an actual case in which data are obtained from a provincial power system in China. The results indicate that through this decision-making method, PSPSs can achieve higher economic revenue in the market, which will provide a reference for the planning and operation of PSPSs. 展开更多

Irrigation is considered a means of intensifying agriculture.It helps to increase productivity while securing it against the risks of drought.It is a means of combating poverty and hunger,which are especially endemic in West Africa.The technical study for the development of a site for the creation of an irrigated area is made up of different phases including the plot,the sizing of the irrigation network,the sizing of the pumping station(s),the dimensioning of the drainage network and the circulation and protection networks.The design of the developments takes into account a certain number of essential elements,including the planned crops,the irrigation system,the nature of the soil,the topography of the land,and the availability and quality of water.The objective of this study carried out in the north of Niger(Agadez)is the design of a Californian network where the hydraulic dimensioning of a solar pumping station and irrigation pipes will be carried out.The methodology adopted is first a series of visits for the collection of climatic,agronomic,topographical and technical data,then an exploitation of the data collected and finally,the writing of this article.The study shows that the developed site covers an area of 12 ha,including 48 plots of 0.25 ha.It had a modern layout and a Californian irrigation system.The results of this technical study propose a 270m deep borehole connected to a 54.4 KWC solar pumping system and a 66 KVA emergency generator of the J66 soundproof hooded SDMO brand serving as water supply sources for the developed site.A Grundfos esp 60-1730 kW pump ensures water extraction.Water is transported to the network via supply pipes with a diameter of 200 mm and distribution pipes whose diameters vary between 160-200 mm. 展开更多

The effect of spatial pattern on the nutrient reduction is investigated based on the spatial simulation model developed for the study area of the Liaohe Delta, China. Four scenarios are designed to test the effect of different landscape components on the nutrient reduction in the reed marsh: Canal density, reed area size, reed area shrinking pattern, and pumping station position. Based on a spatial model designed for the study area, the nutrient reduction in each case of these scenarios is simulated. The results indicate that each factor brings less than 10% change in the total nutrient reduction rate. More canals will not help much to improve nutrient reduction. Smaller areas are more efficient than larger ones. The shrinkage pattern is better than others in keeping a higher nutrient reduction rate. It is also more efficient to keep the pumping station near the border of the area to be irrigated. These conclusions provide theoretical supports to strategy makers for local land use planning, and contribute to the understanding of the relationship between landscape patterns and functions. 展开更多

A reasonable boundary condition for the flow in the sump with several water intakes at different flowrates was proposed. The finite volume method was employed tosolve the governing equations with the body fitted gridgenerated by the multi-block grid technique. By using theFluent software, the fluid flow in a model sump of the pumpstation was calculated. Compared with the experimental result,the numerical result of the example is fairly good. 展开更多

In light of the computational results, the basic flow patterns in the boxes were revealed and a theoretical method to optimize hydraulically design of the suction box is developed. The box geometrical parameters, which influence the flow pattern in the box, could be optimized. The optimum criteria for the hydraulic design of the suction boxes of six types established, respectively. Furthermore, a summarization is given here based on the classification of the basic flow patterns in order to systematically understand the hydraulic design of suction boxes. 展开更多
