Achieving high-energy density remains a key objective for advanced energy storage systems. However, challenges, such as poor cathode conductivity, anode dendrite formation, polysulfide shuttling, and electrolyte degradation, continue to limit performance and stability.Molecular and ionic dipole interactions have emerged as an effective strategy to address these issues by regulating ionic transport, modulating solvation structures, optimizing interfacial chemistry, and enhancing charge transfer kinetics. These interactions also stabilize electrode interfaces, suppress side reactions, and mitigate anode corrosion, collectively improving the durability of high-energy batteries.A deeper understanding of these mechanisms is essential to guide the design of next-generation battery materials.Herein, this review summarizes the development, classification, and advantages of dipole interactions in high-energy batteries. The roles of dipoles, including facilitating ion transport, controlling solvation dynamics, stabilizing the electric double layer, optimizing solid electrolyte interphase and cathode–electrolyte interface layers, and inhibiting parasitic reactions—are comprehensively discussed. Finally, perspectives on future research directions are proposed to advance dipole-enabled strategies for high-performance energy storage. This review aims to provide insights into the rational design of dipole-interactive systems and promote the progress of electrochemical energy storage technologies. 展开更多

Recent advances in geoscience have underscored the critical role of abiogenic processes in petroleum formation, especially the formation and polymerization of methane. However, whether a direct carbon-H_(2) reaction can produce C_(2+)hydrocarbons(e.g.,ethane and propane)beyond methane remains an open question. Here,we demonstrate the direct synthesis of ethane and propane via reactions between amorphous carbon and H_(2) under upper mantle conditions(2-10 GPa and 800-1200℃).A systematic investigation reveals that increasing structural disorder in carbon precursors, from graphite to glassy carbon-Ⅱ and carbon black, enhances the production of C_(2)-C_(3) hydrocarbons.Through integrated X-ray diffraction and reverse Monte Carlo simulations,we establish that the continuous random atomic network structures in amorphous carbon enable one-step synthesis of heavy hydrocarbons with H_(2).These models establish a direct link between atomic-scale carbon structures and the one-step synthesis of C_(2+) hydrocarbons under H_(2)-rich,high-pressure,and high-temperature conditions—potentially revealing an efficient mechanism for the abiotic production of C_(2+) hydrocarbons in the upper mantle. 展开更多

Vacuum-ultraviolet(VUV)radiation is high-energy UV radiation with a wavelength of 100-200 nm capable of decomposing/mineralizing hazardous emerging organic pollutants(EPs)in water through direct photolysis and/or by generating reactive free radicals(RFRs)during photolysis. However, due to the unsatisfactory photoelectric conversion rate, strong absorption by oxygen and water molecules, and other characteristics of VUV radiation, its application and development are hindered, leading to misconceptions regarding high energy consumption and insufficient free radical yield. The objectives of our assessment in this review are as follows:The illumination of the photochemical characteristics of VUV and the reactivity of aqueous solutions.Summarization of accurate UV dose and energy evaluation criteria.Comparison and analysis of the photochemical mechanisms and reaction kinetics of different types of EPs via VUV direct photolysis,as well as the interference origins of typical substrates in water for VUV decontamination. We found that quantities typically reported in VUV photochemical reactions of engineered systems are underreported in low-pressure mercury lamp(LPUV)photochemical reactions, especially a quantitative indicator of the species or energy that induces a chemical reaction. The absence of these quantities has made it difficult to assess the fundamental performance of VUV photolysis fully compared with that of UV-C.Some studies have sought to optimize VUV-advanced reduction processes(VUV-ARP)or VUV reactor treatment of these contaminants;however,an abundant evaluation of the reaction origins and processes between VUV-derived main RFRs and reactants(H_(2)O,O_(2),organic matter, inorganic ions, etc.)is essential, cause these scientific elements will provide the possibility to break the application gap for VUV in the field of EPs treating.Overall, the data compilation, analysis, and research recommendations provided in this review will form the basis for all photochemical reactions initiated by VUV radiation with water as the backing agent. 展开更多

Elevation patterns and assembly processes of soil microbial community structures are essential for understanding biogeo-chemical processes in mountain systems.Differences in soil properties caused by elevation gradients can regulate the spatial distribu-tion and network complexity of the community structure. To explore the variations in soil microbial community structures and their as-sembly mechanisms across different elevations of the Changbai Mountains,as well as their responses to environmental factors,we col-lected microbial samples along an elevational gradient(seven elevations containing four vegetation zones)on the western slope of the Changbai Mountains using the method of metagenomic sequencing. The results showed a significant difference(P<0.05)for the Chao1 index across different elevations, but no significant difference was observed for the Shannon and Simpson indices. With increasing elev-ation,the number of nodes and links in the microbial network gradually decreased.Acidobacteria were highly connected to many nodes. The microbial communities indicated a significant distance-decay relationship(P<0.001)and were affected more by stochastic pro-cesses along the elevation gradient. The results of the Structural Equation Model(SEM)showed that elevation had direct significant ef-fect on carbon(C,P<0.01),nitrogen(N,P<0.01),and phosphorus(P,P<0.05)and weak negative effect on their ecological stoi-chiometry.Elevation was one of the major variables contributing to microbial network topology. The contribution of C and N to micro-bial network complexity was higher than that of P.Our study provides valuable insights into the responses of soil microbial communit-ies to elevation variations. 展开更多

Strong long-wavelength laser pulses enable direct manipulation of atomic lattices for engineering novel quantum states in complex materials.Nonlinear coupling between two infrared-active phonon modes(TO_(1) and TO_(2)),induced by intense terahertz light fields, significantly enhances the amplitude of the TO_(1) mode and facilitates ultrafast control of transient structural distortions. This light-induced distortion reduces the lattice thermal conductivity from 8.1 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1)to 3.0 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1).The reduction originates from the nonlinear coupling, which enhances anharmonic interactions in the lattice potential energy and substantially shortens the phonon lifetime(τ).This work demonstrates a strategy applicable to other perovskite materials and provides a framework for investigating light-induced electrical, optical, and thermodynamic phase transitions. 展开更多

In rock engineering, natural cracks in rock masses subjected to external loads tend to initiate and propagate, leading to potential safety hazards. To investigate the effect of cracking behavior on the mechanical properties of rocks, the cracking processes of pre-cracked rocks have been extensively studied using numerical modeling methods. The peridynamics(PD)exhibits advantages over other numerical methods due to the absence of the requirements for remeshing and external crack growth criterion. However, for modeling pre-cracked rock cracking processes under impact, current PD implementations lack generally applicable rock constitutive models and impact contact models, which leads to difficulties in determining rock material parameters and efficiently calculating impact loads. This paper proposes a non-ordinary state-based peridynamics(NOSBPD)modeling method integrating the Drucker-Prager(DP)plasticity model and an efficient contact model to address the above problems. In the proposed method, the Drucker-Prager plasticity model is integrated into the NOSBPD,thereby equipping NOSBPD with the capability to accurately characterize the nonlinear stress-strain relationship inherent in rocks. An efficient contact model between particles and meshes is designed to calculate the impact loads, which is essentially a coupling method of PD with the finite element method(FEM).The effectiveness of the proposed NOSBPD modeling method is verified by comparison with other numerical methods and experiments.Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can effectively and accurately predict the 3D cracking processes of pre-cracked cracks under impact loading, and the maximum principal stress is the key driver behind wing crack formation in pre-cracked rocks. 展开更多

Methanol,a crucial C1 intermediate, bridges traditional fossil-based chemical processes with emerging sustainable catalytic technologies by serving as both a versatile hydrogenation product from CO/CO_(2)and an active intermediate for hydrocarbon synthesis.Despite significant progress in methanol-to-hydrocarbon(MTH)conversion,a comprehensive understanding of reaction mechanisms remains essential to enhance catalyst design and industrial applicability. This review critically synthesizes recent advances in mechanistic insights related to methanol conversion and methanol-mediated catalytic processes.Firstly,we systematically outline key reaction pathways involved in initial carbon–carbon(C–C)bond formation through direct and indirect mechanisms, emphasizing significant breakthroughs from spectroscopic analyses and theoretical calculations.Subsequently,we highlight the autocatalytic characteristics and dual-cycle mechanisms underlying MTH processes, critically evaluating the roles of zeolite structures, pore sizes, topology, and acidity in governing product selectivity and catalyst stability.Additionally,we discuss cutting-edge developments in tandem catalytic systems employing methanol as a pivotal intermediate for CO_(x)hydrogenation,emphasizing the transferable mechanistic principles and catalytic insights. Finally,we identify future research directions, including elucidating precise hydrocarbon pool(HCP)intermediates, optimizing zeolite structures through computational-guided design, and developing robust catalytic systems leveraging advanced characterization methods and artificial intelligence.By integrating multidisciplinary approaches from catalytic science, materials engineering, and reaction engineering, this review provides actionable guidance towards rational design and optimization of advanced catalytic systems for efficient methanol conversion processes. 展开更多

Neurodevelopmental processes represent a finely tuned interplay between genetic and environmental factors, shaping the dynamic landscape of the developing brain.A major component of the developing brain that enables this dynamic is the white matter(WM),known to be affected in neurodevelopmental disorders(NDDs)(Rokach et al.,2024).WM formation is mediated by myelination,a multifactorial process driven by neuro-glia interactions dependent on proper neuronal functionality(Simons and Trajkovic,2006).Another key aspect of neurodevelopmental abnormalities involves neuronal dynamics and function, with recent advances significantly enhancing our understanding of both neuronal and glial mitochondrial function(Devine and Kittler,2018;Rojas-Charry et al.,2021).Energy homeostasis in neurons, attributed largely to mitochondrial function,is critical for proper functionality and interactions with oligodendrocytes(OLs),the cells forming myelin in the brain’s WM.We herein discuss the interplay between these processes and speculate on potential dysfunction in NDDs. 展开更多

The paper presents the results of geomechanical and CT-based studies of deformation, fracture and filtration processes in reservoir rocks of the Arctic shelf gas condensate field. The experimental study combines(i)determination of mechanical properties,(ii)true triaxial physical modeling of near-wellbore filtration and geomechanical processes,(iii)triaxial sand production studies, and(iv)digital CT-analysis of the rock matrix and sand particles.Based on true triaxial physical modeling, the relationships between permeability, rock deformation, and stresses around a horizontal well during drawdown were determined.Hollow cylinder-type tests were used to determine the stress conditions for sand release initiation, the intensity of sand production under varying stress states, and the total volume of sand produced.Digital particle size analysis of the matrix and released sand provided insights into the dominant mechanisms of hole failure during sand production.A significant strength anisotropy of reservoir rocks was identified, suggesting that drawdown in horizontal wells could lead to asymmetric bottomhole zone fracture, initiated at the upper and lower points on the wellbore contour. The obtained results allowed to determine(i)the drawdowns required to maintain wellbore stability in the given reservoir interval;(ii)the optimal parameters of downhole gravel filter screens for sand control;(iii)to identify the prevailing type of wellbore fracture and to localize failure initiation points on the wellbore walls. The results highlight the importance of integrating modern laboratory core analysis methods to enhance the development of complex reservoirs and reduce the risks of fractures and sand production in weakly cemented formations. 展开更多

The accumulation and circulation of carbon and hydrogen contribute to the chemical evolution of ice giant planets.Species separation and diamond precipitation have been reported in carbon-hydrogen systems and have been verified by static and shock compression experiments.Nevertheless, the dynamic formation processes underlying these phenomena remain insufficiently understood. In combination with a deep learning model,we demonstrate that diamonds form through a three-step process involving dissociation, species separation, and nucleation processes.Under shock conditions of 125 GPa and 4590 K,hydrocarbons decompose to give hydrogen and low-molecular-weight alkanes(CH_(4) and C_(2)H_(6)),which escape from the carbon chains, resulting in C/H species separation. The remaining carbon atoms without C-H bonds accumulate and nucleate to form diamond crystals. The process of diamond growth is associated with a critical nucleus size at which the dynamic energy barrier plays a key role. These dynamic processes of diamond formation provide insight into the establishment of a model for the evolution of ice giant planets. 展开更多

The functional properties of glasses are governed by their formation history and the complex relaxation processes they undergo. However, under extreme conditions, glass behaviors are still elusive. In this study,we employ simulations with varied protocols to evaluate the effectiveness of different descriptors in predicting mechanical properties across both low-and high-pressure regimes. Our findings demonstrate that conventional structural and configurational descriptors fail to correlate with the mechanical response following pressure release, whereas the activation energy descriptor exhibits robust linearity with shear modulus after correcting for pressure effects.Notably, the soft mode parameter emerges as an ideal and computationally efficient alternative for capturing this mechanical behavior. These findings provide critical insights into the influence of pressure on glassy properties, integrating the distinct features of compressed glasses into a unified theoretical framework. 展开更多

Photovoltaic (PV) modules, as essential components of solar power generation systems, significantly influence unitpower generation costs. The service life of these modules directly affects these costs. Over time, the performanceof PV modules gradually declines due to internal degradation and external environmental factors. This cumulativedegradation impacts the overall reliability of photovoltaic power generation. This study addresses the complexdegradation process of PV modules by developing a two-stage Wiener process model. This approach accountsfor the distinct phases of degradation resulting from module aging and environmental influences. A powerdegradation model based on the two-stage Wiener process is constructed to describe individual differences inmodule degradation processes. To estimate the model parameters, a combination of the Expectation-Maximization(EM) algorithm and the Bayesian method is employed. Furthermore, the Schwarz Information Criterion (SIC) isutilized to identify critical change points in PV module degradation trajectories. To validate the universality andeffectiveness of the proposed method, a comparative analysis is conducted against other established life predictiontechniques for PV modules. 展开更多

Current research on heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes(HAOPs)predominantly emphasizes catalyst iteration and innovation.Significant efforts have been made to regulate the electron structure and optimize the electron distribution, thereby increasing the catalytic activity. However, this focus often overshadows an equally essential aspect of HAOPs:the adsorption effect.Adsorption is a critical initiator for triggering the interaction of oxidants and contaminants with heterogeneous catalysts. The efficacy of these interactions is influenced by a variety of physicochemical properties, including surface chemistry and pore sizes, which determine the affinities between contaminants and material surfaces. This dispar ity in affinity is pivotal because it underpins the selective removal of contaminants, especially in complex waste streams containing diverse contaminants and competing matrices.Consequently, understanding and mastering these interfacial interactions is fundamentally indispensable not only for improving pro cess efficiency but also for enhancing the selectivity of contaminant removal.Herein,we highlight the importance of adsorption-driven interfacial interactions for fundamentally elucidating the catalytic mechanisms of HAOPs.Such interactions dictate the overall performance of the treatment processes by balancing the adsorption, reaction, and desorption rates on the catalyst surfaces.Elucidating the adsorption effect not only shifts the paradigm in understanding HAOPs but also improves their practical ity in water treatment and wastewater decontamination.Overall,we propose that revisiting adsorption driven interfacial interactions holds great promise for optimizing catalytic processes to develop effective HAOP strategies. 展开更多

Deep Learning has been widely used to model soft sensors in modern industrial processes with nonlinear variables and uncertainty.Due to the outstanding ability for high-level feature extraction, stacked autoencoder(SAE)has been widely used to improve the model accuracy of soft sensors. However, with the increase of network layers,SAE may encounter serious information loss issues, which affect the modeling performance of soft sensors.Besides, there are typically very few labeled samples in the data set, which brings challenges to traditional neural networks to solve. In this paper,a multi-scale feature fused stacked autoencoder(MFF-SAE)is suggested for feature representation related to hierarchical output, where stacked autoencoder, mutual information(MI)and multi-scale feature fusion(MFF)strategies are integrated.Based on correlation analysis between output and input variables, critical hidden variables are extracted from the original variables in each autoencoder's input layer, which are correspondingly given varying weights.Besides,an integration strategy based on multi-scale feature fusion is adopted to mitigate the impact of information loss with the deepening of the network layers. Then, the MFF-SAE method is designed and stacked to form deep networks. Two practical industrial processes are utilized to evaluate the performance of MFF-SAE.Results from simulations indicate that in comparison to other cutting-edge techniques, the proposed method may considerably enhance the accuracy of soft sensor modeling, where the suggested method reduces the root mean square error(RMSE)by 71.8%,17.1%and 64.7%,15.1%,respectively. 展开更多

Biomarker and stable carbon isotope analyses are presented for the Garau Formation of the Cretaceous Age,an important source rock in western Iran,to reveal its potential as an oilprone source rock. The C_(28)/C_(29)sterane ratio value range(0.72 to 0.83)of bitumen samples from the formation suggests that they were likely formed during phytoplankton blooms.Sterane, hopane, and isoprenoid/n-alkane ratios indicate that the formation's organic matter predominantly consists of algae, and bacteria, accompanied by some reworked material derived from higher plants.Due to the predominance of anoxic conditions and the actions of sulfate-reducing bacteria, the bitumen present is enriched with sulfur compounds. The percentages of saturates, aromatics, and nitrogen-sulfuroxygen(NSO)fractions in the bitumen samples classify them as naphthenic oils.Isotope analysis reveals that biodegradation and water-washing have reduced the concentrations of some volatile saturates and low molecular weight aromatics in the bitumen samples. These actions have resulted in distinctiveδ^(13)C values for the formation's kerogen and bitumen fractions. The formation's organic matter has been subjected to high-temperature thermal regimes and has entered the oil-generation window at the sampled localities, with vitrinite reflectance(%R_(C))varying between 0.7%and 0.75%. 展开更多
