A probabilistic framework for durability assessment of concrete structures in marine environments was proposed in terms of reliability and sensitivity analysis, which takes into account the uncertainties under the environmental,material, structural and executional conditions. A time-dependent probabilistic model of chloride ingress was established first to consider the variations in various governing parameters, such as the chloride concentration,chloride diffusion coefficient, and age factor. Then the Nataf transformation was adopted to transform the nonnormal random variables from the original physical space into the independent standard Normal space. After that the durability limit state function and its gradient vector with respect to the original physical parameters were derived analytically, based on which the first-order reliability method was adopted to analyze the time-dependent reliability and parametric sensitivity of concrete structures in marine environments. The accuracy of the proposed method was verified by comparing with the second-order reliability method and the Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, the influences of environmental conditions, material properties, structural parameters and execution conditions on the time-dependent reliability of concrete structures in marine environments were also investigated. The proposed probabilistic framework can be implemented in the decision-making algorithm for the maintenance and repair of deteriorating concrete structures in marine environments. 展开更多

The correlation coefficients of random variables of mechanical structures are generally chosen with experience or even ignored,which cannot actually reflect the effects of parameter uncertainties on reliability.To discuss the selection problem of the correlation coefficients from the reliability-based sensitivity point of view,the theory principle of the problem is established based on the results of the reliability sensitivity,and the criterion of correlation among random variables is shown.The values of the correlation coefficients are obtained according to the proposed principle and the reliability sensitivity problem is discussed.Numerical studies have shown the following results:(1) If the sensitivity value of correlation coefficient ρ is less than(at what magnitude 0.000 01),then the correlation could be ignored,which could simplify the procedure without introducing additional error.(2) However,as the difference between ρs,that is the most sensitive to the reliability,and ρR,that is with the smallest reliability,is less than 0.001,ρs is suggested to model the dependency of random variables.This could ensure the robust quality of system without the loss of safety requirement.(3) In the case of |Eabs|ρ0.001 and also |Erel|ρ0.001,ρR should be employed to quantify the correlation among random variables in order to ensure the accuracy of reliability analysis.Application of the proposed approach could provide a practical routine for mechanical design and manufactory to study the reliability and reliability-based sensitivity of basic design variables in mechanical reliability analysis and design. 展开更多

In this study, quality of the jo... Conventional design of pier structures is based on the assumption of fully rigid joints. In practice, the real connections are semi-rigid that cause changes in dynamic characteristics. In this study, quality of the joints is investigated by considering changes in natural frequencies. For this purpose, numerical and experimental modal analyses are carried out on related physical model of a pier type structure. When numerical results are evaluated,natural frequencies generally do not match the expected experimental results. Uncertainties in different aspects of engineering problems are always a challenge for researchers. The numerical models which are constructed on the basis of highly idealized scheme may not be able to represent all of the physical aspects of the physical one. For this study, determination of percentage of semi-rigid joints is considered as an optimization problem based on the numerical and experimental frequencies. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis is also used to determine the search space.A new technique of optimization problem is solved by a combination of smart particle swarm optimization(PSO)and genetic algorithms, and a complicated and efficient system for model updating process is introduced. It is observed that the hybrid PSO-Genetic algorithm is applicable and appropriate in model updating process. It performs better than PSO algorithm, considering the good agreement between theoretical frequencies and experimental ones,before and after model updating. 展开更多
