Many countries throughout the world have experienced large earthquakes, which cause building damage or collapse. After such earthquakes, structures must be inspected rapidly to judge whether they are safe to reoccupy. To facilitate the inspection process, the authors previously developed a rapid building safety assessment system using sparse acceleration measurements for steel framed buildings. The proposed system modeled nonlinearity in the measurement data using a calibrated simplified lumped-mass model and convolutional neural networks(CNNs),based on which the buildinglevel damage index was estimated rapidly after earthquakes. The proposed system was validated for a nonlinear 3D numerical model of a five-story steel building, and later for a large-scale specimen of an 18-story building in Japan tested on the E-Defense shaking table. However, the applicability of the safety assessment system for reinforced concrete(RC)structures with complex hysteretic material nonlinearity has yet to be explored;the previous approach based on a simplified lumpedmass model with a Bouc-Wen hysteretic model does not accurately represent the inherent nonlinear behavior and resulting damage states of RC structures. This study extends the rapid building safety assessment system to low-rise RC moment resisting frame structures representing typical residential apartments in Japan.First,a safety classification for RC structures based on a damage index consistent with the current state of practice is defined. Then,a 3D nonlinear numerical model of a two-story moment frame structure is created.A simplified lumped-mass nonlinear model is developed and calibrated using the 3D model, incorporating the Takeda degradation model for the RC material nonlinearity. This model is used to simulate the seismic response and associated damage sensitive features(DSF)for random ground motion. The resulting database of responses is used to train a convolutional neural network(CNN)that performs rapid safety assessment. The developed system is validated using the 3D nonlinear analysis model subjected to historical earthquakes. The results indicate the applicability of the proposed system for RC structures following seismic events. 展开更多

Quantifying the post-earthquake functional recovery of railway stations presents significant challenges. This paper first establishes a post-earthquake function calculation method for railway stations, encompassing the establishment of relationships between the station’s function and the damage state, function loss, and failure probability of components and professional equipment in each layer.Also,the“4 stages-6 sequences”post-earthquake repair method is present, taking into account the functional and structural characteristics of railway stations.Additionally,a novel piecewise function for the post-earthquake functional dynamic recovery of railway stations is developed.A case study is conducted on a typical railway station to demonstrate the analysis procedure. Results indicate that under fortification, rare, and extremely rare earthquake scenarios, the interlayer drift ratio(IDR)of the railway station were 1/276,1/143,and 1/52,respectively,and corresponding peak floor acceleration(PFA)were 6.31 m/s^(2),7.82 m/s^(2),and 8.57 m/s^(2),respectively.The post-earthquake function of the railway station was 93.21%,82.33%,and 64.16%of its initial function. The repair times were 6.66 days,18.65 days, and 37.42 days. The displacement-sensitive,non-structural components were identified as the most vulnerable to damage. And the first repair stage(R_(1))which was mainly used to repair structural components and non-structural transport components, accounted for the highest proportion of total repair time. 展开更多

Understanding genetic variant functionality is essential for advancing animal genomics and precision breeding. However, the lack of comprehensive functional genomic annotations in animals limits the effectiveness of most variant function assessment methods. In this study,we gather 1030 raw epigenomic datasets from 10 animal species and systematically annotate 7 types of key regulatory regions, creating a comprehensive functional annotation map of animal genomic variants. Our findings demonstrate that integrating variants with regulatory annotations can identify tissues and cell types underlying economic traits, underscoring the utility of these annotations in functional variant discovery.Using our functional annotations,we rank the functional potential of genetic variants and classify over 127 million candidate variants into 5 functional confidence categories, with high-confidence variants significantly enriched in eQTLs and trait-associated SNPs.Incorporating these variants into genomic prediction models can improve estimated breeding value accuracy, demonstrating their practical utility in breeding programs. To facilitate the use of our results,we develop the Integrated Functional Mutation(IFmut:http://www.ifmutants.com:8212)platform,enabling researchers to explore regulatory annotations and assess the functional potential of animal variants efficiently. Our study provides a robust framework for functional genomic annotations in farm animals, enhancing variant function assessment and breeding precision. 展开更多

One of the core challenges faced by children with autism is repetitive motor behavior, which not only undermines their learning efficiency in the classroom but also makes it difficult for them to integrate smoothly into inclusive educational settings, thereby hindering their social adaptation and overall development. This study adopted a single-case design focusing on a first-grade student with autism enrolled in a mainstream class at Xiangxue Primary School,Huangpu District,Guangzhou.Functional behavior assessment was conducted to systematically observe and analyze the student’s repetitive motor behaviors in class,on the basis of which an intervention plan was developed and implemented. The intervention incorporated antecedent control, replacement behavior training, and consequence management, supplemented by collaboration between school and family. The findings indicated that the frequency of repetitive motor behaviors decreased significantly after the intervention, while the student demonstrated improved classroom participation and peer interaction;these positive effects were maintained during the follow-up phase. The study suggests that in inclusive education settings, interventions guided by functional behavior assessment can effectively reduce problem behaviors in children with autism and enhance their classroom engagement and learning adaptability. 展开更多

Experience from past earthquakes has demonstrated the need to account for design goals beyond safety, known as functional recovery objectives,in the interest of community resilience.Frameworks have been proposed in the literature to assess the post-earthquake functional recovery of a building, but without accounting for utility systems’disruption, which may be a key contributor to determining when a building is functional. This paper integrates a previously proposed probabilistic method for estimating the post-earthquake restoration of critical utility services with an individual building’s functional recovery assessment framework. The integration was performed by incorporating utilities into the building system fault trees embedded into a functional recovery framework for various building occupancies(residential and commercial office buildings).Once incorporated, the results are used to interrogate the functional recovery of a reinforced concrete building, and the recovery time results were presented for seven cases investigating contributing factors in the functional recovery results including the number of crews available for lifeline restoration, the effect of low-quality service on meeting tenant requirements for elevators, heating ventilation and air conditioning(HVAC),plumbing and electrical systems, consideration of fire watch, the effect of building seismic retrofit,as well as different cases of fragility functions for the lifeline systems. Results showed that utility systems’disruption does not have a significant impact on the recoccupancy of a building because only one utility-dependent building system(fire suppression)is needed for the building’s safety.Unlike reoccupancy, utility systems are significant for functional recovery, mainly at moderate hazard levels because,at these levels, lifeline networks could be damaged without significant building damage, such that the lifeline systems restoration governs.Buildings with more restrictive tenant requirements are more sensitive to tenant disruptions. 展开更多

The development and protection of Shangri-La wetlands in southwestern Yunnan Province is of great significance for the protection of regional biodiversity, ecotourism and regional development. To specify the functions of Shangri-La wetlands, with the help of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), 7 typical wetlands in Shangri-La (Bita Lake Wetland, Napa Lake Wetland, Shudu Lake Wetland, Dazhongdian Wetland, Xiaozhongdian Wetland, Dahei Lake Wetland, Jinsha River Wetland) were selected for the quantitative analysis of 20 indexes in 3 comprehensive assessment layers (service functions, protective functions and production functions). The results showed that Shangri-La wetlands followed the below sequence in function: Bita Lake Wetland (0.811 4), Shudu Lake Wetland (0.739 3), Napa Lake Wetland (0.695 3), Dahei Lake Wetland (0.659 5), Jinsha River Wetland (0.614 3), Dazhongdian Wetland (0.520 4) and Xiaozhongdian Wetland (0.505 2). As single indexes of those wetlands were compared, it was found that values of certain indexes varied greatly, and value differences among 5 of 20 indexes even reached more than 100%, among which that of water supply capacity and tourism recreational value (164.60%) remained the highest, then water supplementation capacity (121.17%) and habitat stability (109.05%), and others varied between 5.58%-91.10%. The assessment results were similar to actual conditions, thus such a method was proved scientific and practical. 展开更多

To quantify the seismic resilience of buildings,a method for evaluating functional loss from the component level to the overall building is proposed, and the dual-parameter seismic resilience assessment method based on postearthquake loss and recovery time is improved.A threelevel function tree model is established, which can consider the dynamic changes in weight coefficients of different category of components relative to their functional losses.Bayesian networks are utilized to quantify the impact of weather conditions, construction technology levels, and worker skill levels on component repair time.A method for determining the real-time functional recovery curve of buildings based on the component repair process is proposed.Taking a three-story teaching building as an example, the seismic resilience indices under basic earthquakes and rare earthquakes are calculated. The results show that the seismic resilience grade of the teaching building is comprehensively judged as GradeⅢ,and its resilience grade is more significantly affected by postearthquake loss. The proposed method can be used to predict the seismic resilience of buildings prior to earthquakes, identify weak components within buildings, and provide guidance for taking measures to enhance the seismic resilience of buildings. 展开更多

Earthquakes pose significant perils to the built environment in urban areas. To avert the calamitous aftermath of earthquakes,it is imperative to construct seismic resilient cities.Due to the intricacy of the concept of urban seismic resilience(USR),its assessment is a large-scale system engineering issue. The assessment of USR should be based on the notion of urban seismic capacity(USC)assessment, which includes casualties, economic loss, and recovery time as criteria.Functionality loss is also included in the assessment of USR in addition to these criteria. The assessment indicator system comprising five dimensions(building and lifeline infrastructure, environment, society, economy, and institution)and 20 indicators has been devised to quantify USR.The analytical hierarchy process(AHP)is utilized to compute the weights of the criteria, dimensions, and indicators in the urban seismic resilience assessment(USRA)indicator system. When the necessary data for a city are obtainable, the seismic resilience of that city can be assessed using this framework. To illustrate the proposed methodology,a moderate-sized city in China was selected as a case study. The assessment results indicate a high level of USR,suggesting that the city possesses strong capabilities to withstand and recover from potential future earthquakes. 展开更多

The rapid and accurate assessment of structural damage following an earthquake is crucial for effective emergency response and post-disaster recovery. Traditional manual inspection methods are often slow, labor-intensive, and prone to human error. To address these challenges, this study proposes STPEIC (Swin Transformer-based Framework for Interpretable Post-Earthquake Structural Classification), an automated deep learning framework designed for analyzing post-earthquake images. STPEIC performs two key tasks: structural components classification and damage level classification. By leveraging the hierarchical attention mechanisms of the Swin Transformer (Shifted Window Transformer), the model achieves 85.4% accuracy in structural component classification and 85.1% accuracy in damage level classification. To enhance model interpretability, visual explanation heatmaps are incorporated, highlighting semantically relevant regions that the model uses for decision-making. These heatmaps closely align with real-world structural and damage features, confirming that STPEIC learns meaningful representations rather than relying on spurious correlations. Additionally, a graphical user interface (GUI) has been developed to streamline image input, classification, and interpretability visualization, improving the practical usability of the system. Overall, STPEIC provides a reliable, interpretable, and user-friendly solution for rapid post-earthquake structural evaluation. 展开更多

Agroecosystem functional assessment indicators provide a necessary bridge between decision makers and scientists. The development of acceptable indicators, however, remains a difficult task because the current knowledge and understanding of ecosystems is not sufficient to allow an objective assessment of all ecosystem functions. These difficulties were summarized from three perspectives. First, there are difficulties in individual function assessment. Of the four functions associated with agroecosystems energy flow, materials cycling, information flow and value flow data on material cycling and information flow remain difficult to obtain and the indicators relatively immature. Secondly, there are difficulties of integration. During the assessment process, the integration of the agroecosystem functions remains the biggest obstacle. Until now, there has been no practical or effective methodology established to resolve the problem. At present, the makeshift approach has been to weight the various indicators and then add them together. Thirdly, there is the problem of obscure concepts and concept confusion. When assessments of agroecosystems are conducted, concepts such as structure, function, benefit, and resource utilization are used extensively. To date, no logical relationship(either real or implied) has been developed between any of these concepts. Are they causes and results such that the relationship between them is linear, or are they independent from one another such that the relationship is parallel? Thus far, the essence of this question is yet to be explored. 展开更多

Recent developments in magnetic resonance(MR) functional quantitative imaging have made it a potentially powerful tool to assess treatment response in radiation therapy. With its abilities to capture functional information on underlying tissue characteristics, MR functional quantitative imaging can be valuable in assessing treatment response and as such to optimize therapeutic outcome. Various MR quantitative imaging techniques, including diffusion weighted imaging, diffusion tensor imaging, MR spectroscopy and dynamic contrastenhanced imaging, have been investigated and found useful for assessment of radiotherapy. However, various aspects including data reproducibility, interpretation of biomarkers, image quality and data analysis impose challenges on applications of MR functional quantitative imaging in radiotherapy assessment. All of these challenging issues shall be addressed to help us understand whether MR functional quantitative imaging is truly beneficial and contributes to future development of radiotherapy. It is evident that individualized therapy is the future direction of patient care. MR functional quantitative imaging might serves as an indispensable tool towards this promising direction. 展开更多

Raoultian activity coefficients γ0c of C in infinitely dilute Fe-C binary melts at temperatures of 1833, 1873, 1923, and 1973 K have been determined from the converted mass action concentrations Nc of C in Fe-C binary melts by the developed AMCT-Ni model based on the atom-molecule coexistence theory (AMCT). The obtained expression of γ0c by the developed AMCT-Ni model has been evaluated to be accurate based on the reported ones from the literature. Meanwhile, three activity coefficients γc,f%,c, andfH,c of C coupled with activity aR,C or a%,c or aH,c have been obtained by the developed AMCT-Ni model and assessed through comparing with the predicted ones by other models from the literature. The first-order activity interaction coefficients ec, ec, and hcc related to γc f%,c, and fH,c are also determined and assessed in comparison with the reported ones from the literature. Furthermore, the integral molar mixing thermodynamic functions such as AmixHm,Fe-C, △mix-Sm,Fe-C, and △mixGm,Fe-C of Fe-C binary melts over a temperature range from 1833 to 1973 K have been determined and evaluated to be valid based on the determined ones from the literature. 展开更多

In order to further verify the accuracy and feasibility of the calculated mass action concentrations Ni of Al and Fe by the developed atom and molecule coexistence theory(AMCT)model,i.e.,AMCT-N,model,for representing activities aR,i of Al and Fe in Fe-Al binary melts reported in the first part of the serial studies, the molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts over a temperature range from 1823 to 1973 K have been calculated based on Ni of Al and Fe as well as the effect of temperature on activity coefficients 7,of Al and Fe as■lnγj/■T=■ln(Ni/xi)/dT by the developed AMCTN-Ni model, where T is absolute temperature and.v,is the mole fraction of element i or compound i in metallic melts. The reported molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts as well as the reported excess molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts relative to ideal solution as a basis from the available literatures have been critically assessed and applied as criteria to verify the developed AMCT-Al,model.The effect of changing temperature onγi of Al and Fe,i.e.,activity coefficient gradients■lnγAl/■T and■lnγFe/■T,which are two indispensable parameters to calculate the molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts, can be accurately obtained by the developed AMCT-Ni,model and expressed by the cubic polynomial functions. Not only the partial molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Al and Fe in Fe-Al binary melts but also the integral molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts can be accurately calculated by the developed AMCT-Al,model.Furthermore,the excess partial and integral molar mixing thermodynamic functions of Fe-Al binary melts relative to ideal solution as a basis can also be precisely calculated by the developed AMCT-Ni,model. 展开更多

Objective: Nalebuff’s type I deformity of the rheumatoid thumb, which is the most common thumb deformity with rheumatoid arthritis, can be classified into three stages according to the range of motion of the thumb. However, a functional assessment for each stage has never been undertaken. Methods: The ranges of motion of the thumb metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints were evaluated to determine Nalebuff’s clinical stage, and both the Modified Kapandji Index (MKI) and the simple test for evaluating hand function (STEF) were used to evaluate hand function in 32 rheumatoid arthritis patients with type I deformity. We assessed hand function in each stage, and examined the relationship between the three clinical stages and dysfunction of the hand. Results: The scores for both MKI and STEF were significantly reduced in parallel with advancing stage of thumb deformity. Conclusion: Nalebuff’s staging system is also useful for reflecting the level of thumb function. 展开更多

Some results of monitoring (for the period from 1992 to 2005) related to transformations of carbon in agroecosystems of Baikal Siberia (Russia) characterized by unpolluted grey forest soils as well as the soils technogenically polluted with heavy metals are discussed with use the unique approach to integrated assessment of the agroecosystem’s functioning regime. The peculiarities of accumulation of carbon in soil microbial biomass and CO2 emission during the years differing in climate conditions are demonstrated. Analysis of formation of net-mineralized and (re)immobilized carbon is conducted, their ratio being used for the purpose of assessment of the level of influence upon the agroecosystem. The agroecosystems having technogenically polluted soils are characterized by processes of the soil microbial biomass reduction and by an obvious increase of CO2 emission into the atmosphere. Negative changes, which are bound up with carbon transformation, are intensified under unfavorable climate conditions. Intensification of processes of carbon net mineralization and, vice versa, lowering the intensity of processes related to carbon (re)immobilization (especially under the effect of soil pollution and climate changes) provoke instability of the agroecosystem and cause formation of a new regime of its functioning. 展开更多

In the event of blood vessel damage, human platelets are promptly recruited on the site of injury and, after their adhesion, activation and aggregation, prevent blood loss with the formation of a clot. The consequence of abnormal regulation can be either hemorrhage or the development of thrombosis. Qualitative and/or quantitative defects in platelets promote bleeding, whereas the residual reactivity of platelets, despite antiplatelet therapies, play an important role in promoting arterial thrombotic complications. Platelet function is traditionally assessed to investigate the origin of a bleeding syndrome, to predict the risk of bleeding prior surgery or during pregnancy or to monitor the efficacy of antiplatelet therapy in thrombotic syndromes that, now, can be considered a new discipline. "Old" platelet function laboratory tests such as the evaluation of bleeding time and the platelet aggregation analysis inplatelet-rich plasma are traditionally utilized to aid in the diagnosis and management of patients with platelet and hemostatic disorders and used as diagnostic tools both in bleeding and thrombotic diathesis in specialized laboratories. Now, new and renewed automated systems have been introduced to provide a simple, rapid assessment of platelet function including point of care methods. These new methodologies are also suitable for being used in non-specialized laboratories and in critical area for assessing platelet function in whole blood without the requirement of sample processing. Some of these methods are also beginning to be incorporated into routine clinical use and can be utilized as not only as first panel for the diagnosis of platelet dysfunction, but also for monitoring anti-platelet therapy and to potentially assess risk of both bleeding and/or thrombosis. 展开更多

Human pose estimation is a basic and critical task in the field of computer vision that involves determining the position(or spatial coordinates)of the joints of the human body in a given image or video. It is widely used in motion analysis, medical evaluation, and behavior monitoring. In this paper, the authors propose a method for multi-view human pose estimation. Two image sensors were placed orthogonally with respect to each other to capture the pose of the subject as they moved, and this yielded accurate and comprehensive results of three-dimensional(3D)motion reconstruction that helped capture their multi-directional poses.Following this,we propose a method based on 3D pose estimation to assess the similarity of the features of motion of patients with motor dysfunction by comparing differences between their range of motion and that of normal subjects. We converted these differences into Fugl–Meyer assessment(FMA)scores in order to quantify them. Finally,we implemented the proposed method in the Unity framework, and built a Virtual Reality platform that provides users with human–computer interaction to make the task more enjoyable for them and ensure their active participation in the assessment process. The goal is to provide a suitable means of assessing movement disorders without requiring the immediate supervision of a physician. 展开更多
