Sustainable Fly Ash Based Roof Tiles with Waste Polythene Fibre: An Experimental Study

The compressive stress-strain behavior and other characteristics of treated fly ash based roof tiles have been studied by several experimental tests. This paper attempts to presents the results and observations of a study and comparison based on the past reported experimental data. Based on the results and observations of the comprehensive experimental study, five “control points” have been identified. The new sets of experiment have been carried out to investigate whether it might be possible the use of fly ash in fly ash based roof tiles for residential construction. In the present study, treated fly ash (TFA) of C category was used with different materials as a replacement of clay for making treated fly ash stone dust roof tiles (TFASDRT). Treated fly ash stone dust roof tiles (TFASDRT) were studied at varying percentages of cement, coarse sand, and radish stone dust (RSD) along with the constant percentage of waste polythene fibre (WPF). A research program was undertaken to evaluate the suitability of such test for assessing the properties of treated fly ash stone dust roof tiles (TFASDRT). The result of this study recommends that the fly ash based roof tiles provides a sustainable supplement to the traditional clay roof tiles, they increase the efficiency of traditional roof tiles and significantly help to reduce the environmental issues associated with the disposal of these waste materials. 展开更多

MPHPB was prepared from melamine,phenylphosphonic acid and boric acid,and its flame retardant effect in PE was investigated.Compared to the intermediate product(melamine phenyl hypophosphite(MPHP)),the residual char increased from 17.9% of MPHP to 41.2% of MPHPB at 800℃.The limiting oxygen index(LOI)of PE/20%MPHPB is 23.6%,which reaches V-0 rating.After the addition of 20%MPHPB,the total heat release(THR),peak heat release rate(pK-HRR),and average effective thermal combustion rates(av-EHC)of PE decreased.Additionally,characterizations including the pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(Py-GC-MS),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),raman spectroscopy test(LRS)and fourier transform infrared(FT-IR)were taken to investigate the flame retardant mechanism,and the results show that MPHPB plays roles in both gas and condensed phases. 展开更多

This communication looks at the photo-oxidation of polythene and polypropylene plastic bottle tops that are placed on soil in a hot arid environment. The degree of oxidation of the plastic is monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy. It is noted that while different bottle top types photo-oxidize at different rates, all show an appreciable level of oxidation after half a year of exposure to the environment. The oxidation leads to brittleness of the plastic, which leads to fissure formation in bottle tops of little thickness. This leads to fragmentation of the material upon impact, making plastic bottle tops an appreciable source of microplastics. 展开更多

Performance Analysis of Natural Gas Polyethylene Pipes Based on the Arrhenius Equation

With the widespread use of polyethylene(PE)materials in gas pipelines,the problem related to the aging of these pipes has attracted increasing attention.Especially under complex environmental conditions involving temperature,humidity,and pressure changes,PE pipes are prone to oxidative degradation,which adversely affects their performance and service life.This study investigates the aging behavior of PE pipes used for gas transport under the combined effects of temperature(ranging from 80℃to 110℃)and pressure(0,0.1,0.2,and 0.3 MPa).By assessing the characteristics and thermal stability of the aged pipes,relevant efforts are provided to explore the performance variations during the aging process and develop methods for evaluating thermal stability.The results indicate that an increase in aging factors,specifically temperature and pressure,significantly reduces theMeltMass Flow Rate(MFR)of polyethylene pipes,suggesting a decline in the material’s flowability during the aging process.Oxidative Induction Time(OIT)tests show that with increasing temperature and pressure,the oxidative induction time of the aged polyethylene pipes progressively shortens,indicating a significant reduction in the material’s oxidative stability.The application of the Arrhenius equation further demonstrates that the aging reaction rate of polyethylene pipes in high-temperature environments is closely related to both temperature and activation energy,thereby laying the foundation of a new approach for the development of an initial model that can reflect the microscopic behavior of polyethylene pipes in aging environments. 展开更多

Flexible composite pipes are advantageous in ultra high strength,high modulus,pH and corrosion resistance and light weight,but there are still some hidden safety troubles because they are poorer in thermostable capacity.Therefore,test samples of flexible composite pipes were prepared with high-temperature polythene(PE-RT)as the neck bush and aramid fiber as the reinforcement layer.Experimental study was conducted by using HPHT vessel and differential thermal scanner for different working conditions,different temperatures,whole-pipe pressure-bearing capacity and 1000 h viability.It is shown by the environmental compatibility test that high temperature has little effect on the weight,Vicat softening temperature,mechanical properties and structures of neck bush PE-RT,but exerts an obvious effect on the tensility and wholepipe water pressure blasting of the reinforcement aramid fiber.Besides,the drop of whole-pipe pressure-bearing capacity is caused by deformation and breaking of aramid fibers when the reinforcement layer is under the force of internal pressure.Finally,disorientation and crystallization of molecular thermal motion occur with the rise of temperature,so amorphous orientation reduces,crystallinity factor and crystalline orientation factor increase gradually,thus,disorientation of macromolecular chains increases and tensile strength decreases.It is concluded that this type of flexible composite pipe can smoothly pass 1000 h viability test.And it is recommended that it be used in the situations with temperature not higher than 95℃and internal pressure not higher than 4 MPa. 展开更多
