State Highway 35 (SH35) connects Opotiki to Gisborne along the Raukumara Peninsula in the North Island, New Zealand. This corridor passes through an area which is prone to landslides, especially during the wet season....State Highway 35 (SH35) connects Opotiki to Gisborne along the Raukumara Peninsula in the North Island, New Zealand. This corridor passes through an area which is prone to landslides, especially during the wet season. This, in turn, influences the traffic and has detrimental effects to the local economy, as it is dependent mainly on tourism and commercial transportation by road. This paper will focus on the landslides which occurred between June and September 2018, within the Bay of Plenty East on the north side of the Raukumara Peninsula. The paper will analyze both the nature and triggering mechanisms behind these landslides. As the landslides occur in the wet season, rainfall has been commonly considered the main trigger. However, the paper will argue that vehicle vibrations have been contributing to the instability of the slopes within the Bay of Plenty East. This paper will be instrumental in developing future transportation strategies in this part of the North Island.展开更多

Hot charge carriers(HC)are photoexcited electrons and holes that exist in nonequilibrium high-energy states of photoactive materials.Prolonged cooling time and rapid extraction are the current challenges for the devel...Hot charge carriers(HC)are photoexcited electrons and holes that exist in nonequilibrium high-energy states of photoactive materials.Prolonged cooling time and rapid extraction are the current challenges for the development of future innovative HC-based optoelectronic devices,such as HC solar cells(HCSCs),hot energy transistors(HETs),HC photocatalytic reactors,and lasing devices.Based on a thorough analysis of the basic mechanisms of HC generation,thermalization,and cooling dynamics,this review outlines the various possible strategies to delay the HC cooling as well as to speed up their extraction.Various materials with slow cooling behavior,including perovskites and other semiconductors,are thoroughly presented.In addition,the opportunities for the generation of plasmon-induced HC through surface plasmon resonance and their technological applications in hybrid nanostructures are discussed in detail.By judiciously designing the plasmonic nanostructures,the light coupling into the photoactive layer and its optical absorption can be greatly enhanced as well as the successful conversion of incident photons to HC with tunable energies can also be realized.Finally,the future outlook of HC in optoelectronics is highlighted which will provide great insight to the research community.展开更多

A combination model based on visual saliency is constructed for searching the ship target regions and suppressing the false alarms. The salient target regions are extracted and marked through segmentation. Radon transform is applied to confirm the suspected ship targets with symmetry profiles. Then, a new descriptor, improved histogram of oriented gradient(HOG), is introduced to discriminate the real ships. The experimental results on real optical remote sensing images demonstrate that plenty of ships can be extracted and located successfully, and the number of ships can be accurately acquired. Furthermore, the proposed method is superior to the contrastive methods in terms of both accuracy rate and false alarm rate.展开更多

However, what commonly revealed by most studies is that there is a positive correlation between the use of language learning strategy and language learners' performance. This paper applies Dornyei's classification, known as cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies, social strategies and affective strategies. By reviewing previous studies on the application of metacognitive strategy in English as a second language(ESL) reading comprehension, plenty of useful implications for reading pedagogy are suggested.
