“Liberty” is a core, prior value of modern Western culture, and particularly of Anglo-American political and economic discourse. For more than a century, the US and other Western countries have been doing their utmo...“Liberty” is a core, prior value of modern Western culture, and particularly of Anglo-American political and economic discourse. For more than a century, the US and other Western countries have been doing their utmost to promote the value of liberty around the world. However, different nations and cultures have different value priorities. Considering “liberty” as the essential, unassailable prior value is an Anglo-American cultural particularity without universal applicability. In China, “liberty” as a high value is a new idea imported from the West at the beginning of the modern era which never enjoyed a very important position in ancient China. Generally speaking, in Chinese culture, the value of “ping an,” with its connotations of peace, safety, equality, health, harmony, and tranquility, is obviously a prior value. Different value priorities have different impacts on culture. This paper tries to compare the American value priority of “liberty” with the Chinese value priority of “ping an,” while discussing their different historical backgrounds and cultural impacts. It argues that values and value priorities are neither absolute nor universal, but that they are rather historical, situational, and dynamic. Value priority in a society should be based on that society’s particular social reality and on the stage of development and the life requirements of its people, rather than on an outside imperative. In the era of globalization, different and even sometimes contradictory human values may actually mutually complement and counterbalance one another.展开更多

The vast expanse of Mesozoic igneous rocks in Hong Kong contain important geological records of late Mesozoic magmatic events and tectonic processes from the coastal region of Southeast China. Of these,the Ping Chau F...The vast expanse of Mesozoic igneous rocks in Hong Kong contain important geological records of late Mesozoic magmatic events and tectonic processes from the coastal region of Southeast China. Of these,the Ping Chau Formation in the northwestern New Territories is the youngest known stratum. We perform a detailed study of the volcanic rocks of the Ping Chau Formation utilizing zircon U-Pb dating,with major and trace elements geochemistry. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb data reveal Early Cretaceous age from two volcanic rock samples, with zircon crystallization from magmas at 140.3 ± 0.8 Ma and 139.3 ± 0.9 Ma,respectively. These rocks have high contents of total alkalis(Na_2O + K_2O = 5.58-9.45 wt.%), high-field-strength elements and light rare earth elements, conspicuous negative Eu anomalies, and depletions in Nb, Ta, Ti, Sr, Ba and P. Using this data, in combination with previous studies on the late Mesozoic volcanic belt in Southeast China, we propose that the volcanic rocks of the Ping Chau Formation probably originated from deep melting of the crust in a back-arc extensional setting induced by the subduction of the paleo-Pacific Plate. This formation represents the final stages of Early Cretaceous volcanic activity in Hong Kong, as associated with large-scale lithospheric extension, thinning and magmatism. Our results provide new information that can be used in evaluating the significance of Early Cretaceous volcanism and tectonics in Southeast China.展开更多

DDF(dry dipterocarp forest)is importantly deciduous forest type in Thailand since it consists of important tree species for timber products and non-timber products.So,people would like to come to use these products fo...DDF(dry dipterocarp forest)is importantly deciduous forest type in Thailand since it consists of important tree species for timber products and non-timber products.So,people would like to come to use these products for daily uses in this forest type.The main aim of this study is to evaluate significant biophysical factors for DDF distribution using factor analysis and to model DDF distribution using ENFA(ecological niche factor analysis).In this study,13 watersheds of Ping Basin in northern Thailand were selected as the study site based on availability of forest inventory data in 2007 from DNP(Department of National Parks,Wildlife and Plant Conservation).Basic biophysical data for data analysis included forest inventory data(179 DDF plots),10 climatic data,three topographic data,and one soil data.For identification and evaluation of biophysical factors for DDF distribution using factor analysis,the first three factors,namely DDF-1,DDF-2 and DDF-3,had been extracted with 95.35%of total variance.These three components were used to predict DDF distribution based on HS(habitat suitability)with ENFA.In practice,the results were validated with AVI(absolute validation index)and CVI(contrast validation index)with validated forest inventory dataset.This evaluation shows that DDF-2 model is the best HS data consisting of four physical factors(mean annually temperature,mean monthly maximum temperature,mean monthly minimum temperature,and elevation),which is able to effectively used for habitat suitability for DDF distribution prediction.It was found that habitat suitability for DDF distribution can be classified into four classes including high suitable habitat,moderate suitable habitat,low suitable habitat,and unsuitable habitat.As a result,DDF distributions with high suitable habitat are highly related with DDF forest inventory plots of DNP.Thus,the obtained output can be further used for DDF rehabilitation according to climate and topographic factors.展开更多
