This article provides a method by which the scour depth and scour width below pipelines, and the scour depth around single vertical piles as well as the time scales of scour for both structures due to bichromatic and bidirectional waves are calculated. The scour and time scale formulae summarized by Sumer and Fredsøe(2002)as well as the bottom shear stress formulae under bichromatic and bidirectional waves by Myrhaug et al.(2023)are used. Results for unidirectional bichromatic waves and symmetrically bidirectional monochromatic waves are provided, showing qualitative agreement with what is expected physically.Qualitative comparisons are made with the data from Schendel et al.’s(2020)small scale laboratory tests on scour around a monopile induced by directionally spread waves.Applications to related cases for pipelines are also suggested. In order to conclude regarding the validity of the method for pipelines and vertical piles,it is required to compare with data in its validity range. 展开更多

To study the dynamic response of vertical and batter pile groups in saturated sand, dynamic tests of these pile groups in saturated sand were carried out using the ZJU400 geotechnical centrifuge at Zhejiang University. The following results were obtained.(1)As the motion intensity increased, the peak acceleration in soil layers at different depths significantly decreased, indicating that the soil stiffness was significantly reduced.(2)During the motion process, the instantaneous bending moment of the vertical and batter pile groups at different depths changed continuously, which had a strong relationship with the saturated sand liquefaction. In the process of sand liquefaction, the residual bending moment generated by the batter pile was more obvious than that of the vertical pile.(3)With the liquefaction of the saturated sand, the distribution of the maximum bending moment of the vertical pile group changed, and the bending moment near the pile cap of the vertical and batter pile groups was always large.(4)In certain cases, the horizontal acceleration and dynamic displacement of the vertical pile cap were amplified. When the motion intensity was large, residual displacement of the batter pile cap occurred. 展开更多

The total inline wave forces, the irregular wave forces in particular, on an isolated pile are investigated by experiment. The relationships between force coefficients Cd and CM including in Morison's Eq. . and KC number or Reynolds number Re, and the variation of Cd and Cm in frequency domain are analysed with the method of least-squares in time domain and that of cross-spectral analysis. The plots of C4and Cmversus KCare given for both regular and irregular waves and those for irregular waves are used for numerical simulation of the irregular wave forces on the vertical pile and the results are in fairly good agreement with the test data. Based on the experimental results , the applicability of the spectral analysis method for calculating irregular wave forces on an isolated pile is investigated with the coherency γ between wave and wave forces and with KC number. 展开更多

An analytical method is developed to investigate the dynamic response of a pile subjected to harmonic vertical loading. The pile is modeled as a one-dimensional(1D)elastic rod.The elastic soil is divided into a homogeneous half space underlying the base of pile and a series of infinitesimally thin layers along the vertical shaft of pile. The analytical solution for the soil-pile dynamic interaction problem is obtained by the method of Hankel transformation. The proposed solution is compared with the classical plane strain solution.Arithmetical examples are presented to demonstrate the sensitivity of the vertical impedance of the pile to relevant parameters. 展开更多

Among different existing vibration isolation methods, open trenches is a technique that is commonly used for reducing the transfer of ground vibrations.Despite many benefits of such a technique for isolating ground vibrations, its primary disadvantage is its instability and lack of vibration isolation effectiveness apart from the stability of the trenches. To address these concerns,a new technique has been developed by the authors, which includes filling up these trenches with a group of hollow pipes in a specific pattern. This is a novel method for reducing ground vibrations by burying hollow pipes horizontally.Through the use of three-dimensional(3D)finite-element modeling, the effectiveness of such hollow pipes in decreasing ground vibrations generated by harmonic stress excitation on the ground surface was investigated.Compared to open trench and rows of piles, these pipe assemblages have been shown to be very successful in reducing ground vibration transmission while also addressing issues of instability and enhancing vibration isolation efficiency.A 3D dynamic numerical model is constructed in PLAXIS3D,and the findings are validated against earlier publications.Next,a comparison research study is conducted, with its focus between horizontal hollow and vertical pipe piles. Finally,a detailed parametric study is carried out to establish the effect of each of the wave barrier’s architectural, material, and loading elements on its vibration isolation effectiveness.Critical parameters are discovered and tuned to maximize the efficiency of this new technique. 展开更多
