Based on the characteristics of pile-soil interaction and the Mohr-Coulomb strength theory,a new method of determining the side friction at a pile-soil interaction is proposed.Combined with the actual engineering cases, the effectiveness of the analogue test method is verified by comparing it with the traditional anchor pile method and self-balanced method.Taking the self-balanced test of the bridge pile foundation in the Songhua River as an example, the conversion factor of sandy soil and weathered mudstone are confirmed by the analogue test method. The results show that the conversion factor of sandy soil and weathered mudstone in the Songhua River area should consider the geological conditions and the construction technology, etc. The standard values are relatively conservative. It is suggested that the engineering application should be properly revised. The recommended range of the conversion factor of sandy soil in this area is 0.65 to 0.85,and that of weathered mudstone is 1.0. 展开更多

Construction of seaside and underground wall bracing often uses stiffened deep cement mixed columns (SDCM). This research investigates methods used to improve the level of bearing capacity of these SDCM when subjected to cyclic lateral loading via various types of stiffer cores. Eight piles, two deep cement mixed piles and six stiffened deep cement mixing piles with three different types of cores, H shape cross section prestressed concrete, steel pipe, and H-beam steel, were embedded though soft clay into medium-hard clay on site in Thailand. Cyclic horizontal loading was gradually applied until pile failure and the hysteresis loops of lateral load vs. lateral deformation were recorded. The lateral carrying capacities of the SDCM piles with an H-beam steel core increased by 3-4 times that of the DCM piles. This field research clearly shows that using H-beam steel as a stiffer core for SDCM piles is the best method to improve its lateral carrying capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capacity. 展开更多

Stress waves propagate along vertical, radial and circumferential directions when a non-uniformly distributed load is applied at one end of a three-dimensional shaft. As a result, the receiving signals are usually mixed with undesired interference components, often featuring as high-frequency fluctuations.Previous studies have revealed that sectional geometry(shape and size)greatly affects the high-frequency interference. In this study, low strain dynamic testing on full-scale X-section concrete is conducted in order to investigate the influences of high-frequency interference on velocity responses at the pile head.Emphasis is placed on the frequency and peak value of interference waves at various receiving points.Additionally, the effects of the geometrical, and mechanical properties of the pile shaft on high-frequency interference are elaborated on through the three-dimensional finite element method. The results show that the measured wave is obscured by interference waves superposed by two types of high-frequency components. The modulus and cross-sectional area are contributing factors to the frequency and peak value of the interference waves. On the other hand, the position with the least interference is determined,to some extent,by the accurate shape of the X-section. 展开更多

With the increasing construction of port facilities,cross-sea bridges, and offshore engineering projects, uplift piles embedded in marine sedimentary soft soil are becoming increasingly necessary. The load-displacement curve of uplift piles is crucial for evaluating their uplift bearing characteristics, which facilitates the risk evaluation, design, and construction of large infrastructural supports. In this study,a load-displacement curve model based on piezocone penetration test(CPTU)data is proposed via the load transfer method.Experimental tests are conducted to analyze the uplift bearing characteristics and establish a correlation between the proposed model and CPTU data. The results of the proposed load-displacement curve are compared with the results from numerical simulations and those calculated by previous methods. The results show that the proposed curves appropriately evaluated the uplift bearing characteristics and improved the accuracy in comparison with previous methods. 展开更多

Seismic-induced landslides critically threaten infrastructure and human safety, especially in sandy slopes where conventional stabilization methods often fail under dynamic loading. This study evaluates circular open-ended anti-slide pipe piles embedded in a two-layer sandy slope with differing geotechnical properties.Ten physical models, including five freefield and five pile-reinforced slopes, were tested on a shaking table.Key seismic responses—acceleration, soil displacement, and bending moments—were monitored using accelerometers, strain gauges, and Digital Image Correlation(DIC).Complementary numerical simulations using Abaqus with a Mohr–Coulomb model validated experimental results.Soil displacement in free-field models under 0.25g shaking was about 3.5 times greater than in reinforced slopes.Bending moments increased with seismic intensity, peaking at depths around five times the pile diameter.Limitations including simplified two-layer soil representation, idealized seismic inputs, and boundary effects inherent to laboratory models restrict direct field application but enable controlled analysis.By combining physical experiments with numerical modeling, the study provides a robust and validated framework for seismic slope stabilization. This integrated approach enhances understanding of soil–pile interaction under seismic loads and offers targeted insights for developing safer and more reliable geotechnical design strategies in earthquake-prone areas. 展开更多

The torsional low strain integrity test(TLSIT),known for its advantages such as a smaller detection blind zone, improved identification of shallowly buried defects, stable phase velocity for signal interpretation, and better adaptability for existing pile testing. However,it lacks a comprehensive understanding of the authentic three-dimensional(3D)strain wave propagation mechanism, particularly wave reflection and transmission at defects. To address this gap,a novel 3D theoretical framework is introduced in this context to model the authentic 3D wave propagation during the TLSIT.The proposed approach is validated by comparing its results with those obtained from 3D finite element method(FEM)simulations and simplified 1D(one-dimensional)and 3D analytical solutions.Additionally,a parametric study is conducted to enhance insights into the formation mechanism of high-frequency interference observed during the TLSIT.Finally,a defect identification study is performed to provide guidance for interpreting the wave spectrum in terms of defect characteristics. 展开更多

The main purpose of using geothermal energy piles(GEPs)is to enable the exploitation of geothermal energy for meeting the heating/cooling demands of buildings efficiently. However, the installation process of conventional GEPs is inconvenient compared with that of traditional foundation piles. The pre-bored grouted planted geothermal energy pile(PGP GEP)is an innovative technology to simplify the installation process. Most investigations of in-situ experiments for conventional GEPs have focused on summer conditions. An in-situ test for a PGP GEP was conducted to analyze the temperature changes and thermo-mechanical characteristics under winter conditions. The results show that the average temperature of the pile decreased by 5.1℃,and the pile exhibited a general trend of high temperatures at both ends and low temperatures in the middle. In mechanics, strong pile end restraints resulted in smaller observed axial strain and higher axial thermal-induced force in the pile ends than at the middle of the pile. 展开更多

The nondestructive testing of anti slide pile usually adopts low strain method, high strain method and acoustic transmission method. Low strain detection method is very effective in finding major defects, but it is not foolproof; In revealing the integrity of piles, mutual comparison can better explain the problem. The test results can only be used as a reference for the determination of pile defects, and the pile cannot be determined as unqualified only by the results of integrity test. The inspector must fully grasp the pile foundation construction and geological conditions in order to make the most reasonable interpretation of the test results. 展开更多

This paper describes a shake table test study on the seismic response of low-cap pile groups and a bridge structure in liquefiable ground. The soil profile, contained in a large-scale laminar shear box, consisted of a horizontally saturated sand layer overlaid with a silty clay layer, with the simulated low-cap pile groups embedded. The container was excited in three E1 Centro earthquake events of different levels. Test results indicate that excessive pore pressure (EPP) during slight shaking only slightly accumulated, and the accumulation mainly occurred during strong shaking. The EPP was gradually enhanced as the amplitude and duration of the input acceleration increased. The acceleration response of the sand was remarkably influenced by soil liquefaction. As soil liquefaction occurred, the peak sand displacement gradually lagged behind the input acceleration; meanwhile, the sand displacement exhibited an increasing effect on the bending moment of the pile, and acceleration responses of the pile and the sand layer gradually changed from decreasing to increasing in the vertical direction from the bottom to the top. A jump variation of the bending moment on the pile was observed near the soil interface in all three input earthquake events. It is thought that the shake table tests could provide the groundwork for further seismic performance studies of low-cap pile groups used in bridges located on liquefiable groun. 展开更多

Piled embankments, which offer many advantages, are increasingly popular in construction of high-speed railways in China.Although the performance of piled embankment under static loading is well-known,the behavior under the dynamic train load of a high-speed railway is not yet understood. In light of this,a heavily instrumented piled embankment model was set up,and a model test was carried out,in which a servo-hydraulic actuator outputting M-shaped waves was adopted to simulate the process of a running train.Earth pressure, settlement, strain in the geogrid and pile and excess pore water pressure were measured. The results show that the soil arching height under the dynamic train load of a high-speed railway is shorter than under static loading. The growth trend for accumulated settlement slowed down after long-term vibration although there was still a tendency for it to increase.Accumulated geogrid strain has an increasing tendency after long-term vibration. The closer the embankment edge, the greater the geogrid strain over the subsoil.Strains in the pile were smaller under dynamic train loads, and their distribution was different from that under static loading. At the same elevation, excess pore water pressure under the track slab was greater than that under the embankment shoulder. 展开更多

Piles are generally an effective way to reduce the risk of slope failure. However, previous approaches for slope stability analysis did not consider the effect of the piles coupled with the decrease of the water level(drawdown). In this study,a series of centrifuge model tests was performed to understand the deformation and failure characteristics of slopes reinforced with various pile layouts. In the centrifuge model tests, the pile-reinforced slopes exhibited two typical failure modes under drawdown conditions:across-pile failure and through-pile failure. In the through-pile slope failure,a discontinuous slip surface was observed, implying that the assumption of the slip surface in previous stability analysis methods was unreasonable. The test results showed that drawdown led to instability of the piles in cohesive soil,as the saturated cohesive soil failed to provide sufficient constraint for piles. The slope exhibited progressive failure, from top to bottom, during drawdown. The deformation of the piles was reduced by increasing the embedment depth and row number of piles. In addition, the deformation of soils outside the piles was influenced by the piles and showed a similar distribution shape as the piles, and the similarity degree weakened as the distance from the piles increased. This study also found that the failure mechanism of unreinforced and pile-reinforced slopes induced by drawdown could be described by coupling between the deformation localization and local failure, and it revealed that pile-reinforced slopes could reduce slope deformation localization during drawdown. 展开更多

Topography effects on the vertical vibration responses of pile group are revealed though numerical analysis and model tests.First,a series of model tests with different topography of ground and bedrock are conducted. The results indicate that displacement amplitude of the pile head in sloping ground topography is larger than in horizontal ground.Differential displacement at various positions of the pile cap is observed in non-horizontal topography.Afterwards,a numerical algorithm is employed to further explore the essential response characteristics in group piles of different topography configurations, which has been verified by the test results. The lengths of the exposed and frictional segment, together with the thickness of the subsoil layer, are the dominant factors which cause non-axisymmetric vibration at the pile cap. 展开更多

This work presents a new analytical method to analyze the influence of reaction piles on the test pile response in a static load test.In our method, the interactive effect between soil and pile is simulated using independent springs and the shear displacement method is adopted to analyze the influence of reaction piles on test pile response. Moreover, the influence of the sheltering effect between reaction piles and test pile on the test pile response is taken into account. Two cases are analyzed to verify the rationality and efficiency of the present method. This method can be easily extended to a nonlinear response of an influenced test pile embedded in a multilayered soil, and the validity is also demonstrated using centrifuge model tests and a computer program presented in the literature. The present analyses indicate that the proposed method will lead to an underestimation of the test pile settlement in a static load test if the influence of the presence of reaction piles on the test pile response is neglected. 展开更多

To reveal the bearing capacity of the X-section concrete piles pile raft foundation in silica sand,a series of vertical load tests are carried out.The X-section concrete piles are compared with circular section pile with the same section area. The load−settlement curves, axial force and skin friction, strain on concave and convex edge of the pile,pile-sand stress ratio, distributions of side and tip resistance are presented. The results show that bearing capacity of the X section concrete pile raft foundation is much larger than that of the circular pile raft foundation.Besides, compared with the circular pile, the peak axial force of X-section piles under raft is deeper and smaller while the neutral point of X-section concrete pile is deeper. Moreover, the strain on the concave edge is much larger than that on the convex edge of the pile, and the convex edge has more potential in bearing capacity as the vertical load increases. The X-section pile has higher pile-sand stress ratios and load-sharing between side resistance and tip resistance.Above all,the X-section concrete pile can significantly increase the bearing capacity of pile-raft foundations in silica sand. 展开更多

Despite the continuous advancements of engineering construction in high-intensity areas, many engineering landslides are still manufactured with huge thrust force, and double-row piles are effective to control such large landslides. In this study, large shaking table test were performed to test and obtain multi-attribute seismic data such as feature image, acceleration, and dynamic soil pressure.Through the feature image processing analysis, the deformation characteristics for the slope reinforced by double-row piles were revealed.By analyzing the acceleration and the dynamic soil pressure time domain, the spatial dynamic response characteristics were revealed.Using Fast Fourier Transform and half-power bandwidth, the damping ratio of acceleration and dynamic soil pressure was obtained.Following that, the Seism Signal was used to calculate the spectral displacement of the accelerations to obtain the regional differences of spectral displacement. The results showed that the overall deformation mechanism of the slope originates from tension failure in the soil mass. The platform at the back of the slope was caused by seismic subsidence, and the peak acceleration ratio was positively correlated with the relative pile heights. The dynamic soil pressure of the front row piles showed an inverted"K"-shaped distribution, but that of the back row piles showed an"S"-shaped distribution. The predominant frequency of acceleration was 2.16 Hz,and the main frequency band was 0.7-6.87 Hz;for dynamic soil pressure, the two parameters became 1.15 Hz and 0.5-6.59 Hz,respectively. In conclusion, dynamic soil pressure was more sensitive to dampening effects than acceleration.Besides, compared to acceleration, dynamic soil pressure exhibited larger loss factors and lower resonance peaks. Finally, back row pile heads were highly sensitive to spectral displacement compared to front row pile heads. These findings may be of reference value for future seismic designs of double-row piles. 展开更多

Aphysical model facility was designed, built, and setup for conducting model tests on a composite foundation in a soil ground. The model tests were carried out on a composite foundation with different combinations of vertical reinforcement elements in the same soil ground. Via the analysis of the collected data the characteristics of the composite foundation with different reinforcing elements were obtained, including the characteristics of load-settlement curves, column stresses, stresses of the intercolumn soil, pile-soil stress ratio, and load-sharing ratios of columns and soil. Results from the model tests reveal the mechanism of a composite foundation with different reinforcing elements quantitatively. It is concluded that both a composite foundation with a combination of steel pipe pile and sand column and that with a combination of concrete pile and lime column have a higher bearing capacity than the composite foundation with only sand columns with the same conditions of soil ground and loading. A composite foundation with lime column and sand column embodies no much better performance than that with sand colunms only. 展开更多
