The development of communication robots, such as cleaning and a care-giver robot, has been progressing. Care-giver robots provide daily assistance, including contacting emergency services. This study is part of the "study on planning techniques of living space in harmony with robots", and focused on the elderly. Minimum distance was the subjects felt "I do not want any more approached". Subjects were 21 elderly persons (eight males and thirteen females), aged 66-86 years. The experimental room was an assembly room in a public accommodation (14 m× 6.5 m). The small mobile robot used in this experiment was external form dimensions of 120 mm (W)× 130 mm (D)× 70 mm (H), In this experiment, considering the personal space as the small mobile robot is watching robot without support function for person. The robot moved toward standing or sitting subjects at constant velocities from a distance 5 m apart. Research factors are 5 angles (0°, 45°, 90°, 135° and 180°) and 2 speeds (0.08 m/s and 0.24 m/s). 展开更多

In this paper, the authors present a basic study of the planning techniques for human-robot living spaces. Taking into account the previous studies, the authors clarify at what distances adult males feel comfortable with a small mobile robot. The authors investigated the impact of differences in position in a personal distance of the robot. The authors make the robot to move towards the subjects at different speeds and from five different angles (0°, 45°, 90°, 135° and 180°) while they were crouching, sitting on the floor and supine. In this experiment, about setting up a small mobile robot, the authors explained the robot does not have a support function for the people watching. A questionnaire survey was also conducted before and after the experiments. The result is that differences were out to personal distance with the robot due to the difference in position. The research finds that personal distance also becomes small position changes, sight line becomes lower. In addition, individual distance is increased when the slow speed as well as the paper before. 展开更多

A personalized emotion space is proposed to bridge the "affective gap" in video affective content understanding. In order to unify the discrete and dimensional emotion model, fuzzy C-mean (FCM) clustering algorithm is adopted to divide the emotion space. Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is used to determine the membership functions of typical affective subspaces. At every step of modeling the space, the inputs rely completely on the affective experiences recorded by the audiences. The advantages of the improved V-A (Velance-Arousal) emotion model are the per- sonalization, the ability to define typical affective state areas in the V-A emotion space, and the convenience to explicitly express the intensity of each affective state. The experimental results validate the model and show it can be used as a personalized emotion space for video affective content representation. 展开更多

Background: Pharmacists must adjust their distance from patients to facilitate communication during interviews and gain their trust. The distance between the patients and the pharmacists varies depending on many factors, such as gender, posture and the patients’ mood. Only a few of these papers have actually measured and validated distance with patients. In this study, we validated our method of assessing mood and measuring distance before beginning a survey with patients. Methods: We measured comfortable interpersonal distance among men and women using an ecological scenario, in which a pharmacist approaches the subject, and the subject is asked to stop the pharmacist at the distance he/she feel comfortable with. Five pharmacists and 33 subjects participated in the study. The Japanese version of the Brief Mood Questionnaire Checklists (BMC-J) was used to quantify the subject’s mood for the day, and then the distance from the pharmacist that the subjects considered comfortable was measured at the bedside. The relationship between the mood and distance obtained was examined. Results: The comfortable distance of subjects was influenced by gender, posture, and mood. The shortest distance was 94.7 ± 11.1 cm (mean ± SD), for the male subjects versus the female pharmacists in the sitting position. The distance of male subjects shorted when they had positive emotions and lengthened when they were worried. Female subjects maintained a long distance from both male and female pharmacists when they had positive emotions and a short distance when they were worried. Conclusion: Findings show that the distance changes depending on the subjects’ mood at the time of measurement. It was found that the present measurement method can be used to determine the psychological state of the patient and measure the comfort distance at that time, and can be used as a simple method to examine these relationships. Therefore, it is also considered a practical method for the next step, which is a clinical study on patients. 展开更多
