The peering-jump behavior was studied for the common field grasshopper Chorthippus brunneus, the meadow grasshopper C. parallelus and the alpine grasshopper Miramella alpina (Orthoptera, Caelifera). It was found that immediately before jumping M. alpina executes primarily unilateral object-related peering movements, with approximately twice the amplitude and velocity of the predominantly bilateral object-related peering movements of the other two species. Whereas M. alpina almost always jumped toward the black stripes in the experimental arena, the other species jumped toward both the black stripes and the white spaces between them. All three species preferred the same pattern of black stripes, which permitted them to view one black stripe frontally, with an additional black stripe to the left and right, in the lateral visual field. The similarities and differences in the peering-jump behavior of the three grasshopper species is discussed with regard to visual perception (parallax cues) and environmental adaptation. 展开更多

Social interaction with peer pressure is widely studied in social network analysis.Game theory can be utilized to model dynamic social interaction, and one class of game network models assumes that people’s decision payoff functions hinge on individual covariates and the choices of their friends. However, peer pressure would be misidentified and induce a non-negligible bias when incomplete covariates are involved in the game model. For this reason,we develop a generalized constant peer effects model based on homogeneity structure in dynamic social networks. The new model can effectively avoid bias through homogeneity pursuit and can be applied to a wider range of scenarios. To estimate peer pressure in the model,we first present two algorithms based on the initialize expand merge method and the polynomial-time twostage method to estimate homogeneity parameters. Then we apply the nested pseudo-likelihood method and obtain consistent estimators of peer pressure.Simulation evaluations show that our proposed methodology can achieve desirable and effective results in terms of the community misclassification rate and parameter estimation error. We also illustrate the advantages of our model in the empirical analysis when compared with a benchmark model. 展开更多

Background With the rapid growth of internet usage, adolescent cyberbullying has become a pressing issue. This study examines the longitudinal impact of leisure-time physical activity and peer relationships on cyberbullying over a one-year period, drawing on the Stage-Environment Fit Theory and the Interpersonal Relationship Theory. Methods A three-wave longitudinal study was conducted over one year, involving 896 middle school students from five schools in Sichuan,Jiangsu, and Guangdong,China, selected to ensure regional diversity.Participants were recruited using stratified random sampling, and data were collected at four-month intervals.Leisure-time physical activity, peer relationships, and cyberbullying behaviors were assessed using validated scales.Data were analyzed using latent growth modeling(LGM)and structural equation modeling(SEM)to examine longitudinal effects and mediation relationships.Results(1)Leisure-time physical activity, peer relationships, and cyberbullying behaviors remained relatively stable over time.(2)Both leisure-time physical activity and peer relationships significantly reduced future cyberbullying incidents, with physical activity also enhancing subsequent peer relationships.(3)Peer relationships partially mediated the effect of leisure-time physical activity on cyberbullying, indicating that improved peer interactions contributed to a reduction in cyberbullying behaviors. Conclusion This study found that leisure-time sports activities and peer relationships are important factors affecting cyberbullying, and peer relationships play a partial mediating role in it.The results provide empirical support for understanding the formation mechanism and influencing factors of cyberbullying. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Peer bullying victimization(PBV)is a significant public health issue that adolescents often face, with approximately one-third having experienced PBV.Understanding its interrelationships with mental health problems is crucial for effective intervention. This study aims to examine the longitudinal relationships between internalizing problems(depression and anxiety),externalizing problems(aggression),and PBV among middle school students using cross-lagged panel network analysis.AIM To examine the longitudinal relationships between internalizing problems(depression and anxiety),externalizing problems(aggression),and PBV among middle school students using cross-lagged panel network analysis.METHODS A total of 1260 middle school students(54.6%male)participated in this study.Data were collected at two time points(time 1 and time 2)using self-report questionnaires to assess PBV,depression, anxiety, and aggression.Cross-lagged panel network analysis was applied to examine the bi-directional relationships between these variables over time.RESULTS Depression, particularly a“sad mood,”was the most significant predictor of both PBV and aggression.Cyberbullying victimization also emerged as a key factor influencing depression and anxiety. While anxiety had weaker and less consistent effects on PBV,aggression was predominantly influenced by depressive symptoms and sleep disturbances. The analysis also identified key symptoms, such as a“sad mood”and sleep disturbances,as crucial targets for intervention to mitigate the cycle of PBV,depression, anxiety, and aggression.CONCLUSION This study provides important insights for bullying victimization prevention and intervention strategies:(1)Early identification and intervention targeting depression, particularly a“sad mood,”and sleep disturbances;(2)The importance of addressing cyberbullying as a distinct factor influencing mental health;and(3)The need for comprehensive, longitudinal approaches to understanding and intervening in the interconnected mental health issues among adolescents. 展开更多

This letter critically reviews a recent longitudinal network study by Bai et al examining the dynamic,symptom-level interplay among peer bullying victimization, depression, anxiety, and aggression in Chinese adolescents. The study highlights that key symptoms, such as persistent sad mood, sleep disturbances, and cyberbullying victimization play a pivotal role in reinforcing the vicious cycle between mental health issues and bullying experiences. While the application of cross-lagged panel network analysis offers a nuanced understanding of these bidirectional relationships, several limitations remain, including the use of selfreported measures and a region-specific sample.Nevertheless, the findings underscore the urgent need for early screening and targeted interventions in school settings, particularly those addressing both emotional symptoms and digital forms of bullying.Moving forward, integrated and culturally sensitive approaches are essential to prevent escalation and break the link between peer victimization and adolescent psychopathology.Future research should incorporate multi-informant data and broaden the cultural context to strengthen generalizability and intervention design. 展开更多

Objective:Non-suicidal self-injury(NSSI)is a mental health problem that often occurs in adolescents in Indonesia.Even though NSSI does not have the intention of suicide, some cases result in death. This research aimed to identify the predisposition and precipitation factors associated with the dynamics of NSSI behaviors among adolescents. Methods:This research is an explanatory research design with a cross-sectional study.Out of 4000 students,904 students from State High School and Vocational School in Central Java Province were selected as respondents using non-probability sampling and a purposive sampling approach. This research was carried out using Google Forms from September to November 2023.The instrument used was the Self-Harm Inventory(SHI).Data analysis in this study used the chi-squared test. Results:The results of this study indicate that the most significant predisposition factors of NSSI behaviors experienced by respondents in this study are introverted personality and the environment that supports NSSI behaviors. In contrast, the precipitation factors are bullying and deep disappointment.Otherwise, based on the data analysis, the maladaptive coping mechanism(P-value=0.029)has become a predisposition factor related to the dynamics of NSSI behaviors. In contrast,bullying(P-value=0.000)and deep disappointment(P-value=0.000)still become precipitation factors related to the dynamics of NSSI behaviors. Conclusions:The results of this study can be evidence-based for stakeholders to provide interventions, especially for the vulnerable population affected by NSSI behaviors. 展开更多

Purpose:Scholars face an unprecedented ever increasing demand for acting as reviewers for journals, recruitment and promotion committees, granting agencies, and research assessment agencies.Consequently, journal editors face an ever increasing scarcity of experts willing to act as reviewers. It is not infrequent that reviews diverge, which forces editors to recur to additional reviewers or make a final decision on their own.The purpose of the proposed bibliometric system is to support of editors’accept/reject decisions in such situations.Design/methodology/approach:We analyse nearly two million 2017 publications and their scholarly impact, measured by normalized citations.Based on theory and previous literature,we extrapolated the publication traits of text, byline, and bibliographic references expected to be associated with future citations. We then fitted a regression model with the outcome variable as the scholarly impact of the publication and the independent variables as the above non-scientific traits, controlling for fixed effects at the journal level.Findings:Non-scientific factors explained more than 26%of the paper’s impact, with slight variation across disciplines. On average,OA articles have a 7%greater impact than non-OA articles.A 1%increase in the number of references was associated with an average increase of 0.27%in impact.Higher-impact articles in the reference list, the number of authors and of countries in the byline, the article length, and the average impact of co-authors’past publications all show a positive association with the article’s impact.Female authors, authors from English-speaking countries, and the average age of the article’s references show instead a negative association.Research limitations:The selected non-scientific factors are the only observable and measurable ones to us,but we cannot rule out the presence of significant omitted variables.Using citations as a measure of impact has well-known limitations and overlooks other forms of scholarly influence.Additionally, the large dataset constrained us to one year’s global publications, preventing us from capturing and accounting for time effects.Practical implications:This study provides journal editors with a quantitative model that complements peer reviews, particularly when reviewer evaluations diverge.By incorporating non-scientific factors that significantly predict a paper’s future impact, editors can make more informed decisions, reduce reliance on additional reviewers, and improve the efficiency and fairness of the manuscript selection process.Originality/value:To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first one to specifically address the problem of supporting editors in any field in their decisions on submitted manuscripts with a quantitative model.Previous works have generally investigated the relationship between a few of the above publication traits and their impact or the agreement between peer-review and bibliometric evaluations of publications. 展开更多
