Methods: Patients with type 2 diabetes in the rural area were selected and they were divided into the peer group and control group with voluntary. The patients in peer support group applied six kinds of activity patterns, while the control group was carried out with routine activities. Results: Comparison indexes for the two groups are mastering degree of related knowledge to diabetes, control compliance rate of indicators related to diabetes, and management of diabetes self-efficacy. Comparing with the control group, indexes in peer support group were significantly increased (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, in the table of diabetes distress, 17 items have been improved and the occurrence rate of painful diabetic decreased significantly (P < 0.01). Conclusion: Peer support can improve the rural patients’ self-efficacy of type 2 diabetes and decrease patients’ pain from type 2 diabetes mellitus.展开更多

However, because not all students have been able to learn directly from certified instructors, we studied the educational efficacy of the use of peer-assisted learning(PAL) to train high-school students to perform BLS services.METHODS: This study consisted of 187 high-school students: 68 participants served as a control group and received a 1-hour BLS training from a school nurse, and 119 were included in a PAL group and received a 1-hour CPR training from a PAL leader. Participants' BLS training was preceded by the completion of questionnaires regarding their background. Three months after the training, the participants were asked to respond to questionnaires about their willingness to perform CPR on bystander CPR and their retention of knowledge of BLS.RESULTS: We found no statistically significant difference between the control and PAL groups in their willingness to perform CPR on bystanders(control: 55.2%, PAL: 64.7%, P=0.202). The PAL group was not significantly different from the control group(control: 60.78±39.77, PAL: 61.76±17.80, P=0.848) in retention of knowledge about BLS services.CONCLUSION: In educating high school students about BLS, there was no significant difference between PAL and traditional education in increasing the willingness to provide CPR to bystanders or the ability to retain knowledge about BLS.展开更多

The purpose of this paper was to discuss alcohol use and abuse among adolescents and its relationship to social support. Integrative review has been utilized to address the issue. There is a presentation of findings from research examining social support concepts and their relationship to adolescents’ alcohol use and abuse. Treatment requires awareness of underlying causes in order to establish effective treatment approaches. Determining these underlying causes requires adequate knowledge of family, peers, and societal influences on adolescents’ alcohol use and abuse. Health professionals across disciplines have an important role in implementing multidisciplinary interventions. The purpose of this paper was to discuss alcohol use and abuse among adolescents and its relationship to social support. Results, controversies and concerns raised by the reported results are addressed. Implications for future research are delineated.展开更多

In Scotland, despite a long-term policy commitment to recovery approaches, the creation of peer worker roles has been slow and patchy. This paper describes findings from a study on the levers and barriers to the development of peer worker roles in two Scottish health board areas. Findings suggest that new evidence on effective implementation and cost effectiveness should be prioritised to support potentially complex role development in time of reduced resources. We argue that additional evidence on effectiveness is unlikely, by itself, to lead to country-wide employment of peer workers. We therefore suggest that a policy commitment to peer working would be reinforced by not only a strengthened evidence base but also strengthened accountability mechanisms. In the absence of such accountability, decision-makers and planners might reasonably continue to ask "why bother"?展开更多
