In order to enter effective parameters of rock mass in a numerical model, the relationships between mechanical parameters of rock and rock mass were obtained by an inversion method and an orthogonal test, given our measurements of the maximum heights of two failure zones in the Longdong coal mine. Using the maximum heights of the caving zone and the water-conducting fractured zone as test indices the modulus of elasticity, the Poisson ratio, cohesion and tension strength as test factors and different values of reduction enhancement factors as test levels,an orthogonal test was designed to obtain an optimum simulation scheme. From the analysis of different values of reduction enhancement factors which affect the test indices,an optimum factor combination for modification of parameters could be inferred.By using modified parameters in our numerical simulation, the maximum heights of the caving zone and the water-conducting fractured zone in the extensive Xiyi area were determined as 15.06 m and 36.92 m.These values were almost the same as those obtained by similar material simulation(8.5 m and 37.0 m)and empirical prediction(8.4 m and 34.4 m).These results indicate that the modification of parameters is a rational method. 展开更多

Lithium ion battery has typical character of distributed parameter system, and can be described precisely by partial differential equations and multi-physics theory because lithium ion battery is a complicated electrochemical energy storage system. A novel failure prediction modeling method of lithium ion battery based on distributed parameter estimation and single particle model is proposed in this work. Lithium ion concentration in the anode of lithium ion battery is an unmeasurable distributed variable. Failure prediction system can estimate lithium ion concentration online, track the failure residual which is the difference between the estimated value and the ideal value. The precaution signal will be triggered when the failure residual is beyond the predefined failure precaution threshold, and the failure countdown prediction module will be activated. The remaining time of the severe failure threshold can be estimated by the failure countdown prediction module according to the changing rate of the failure residual. A simulation example verifies that lithium ion concentration in the anode of lithium ion battery can be estimated exactly and effectively by the failure prediction model. The precaution signal can be triggered reliably, and the remaining time of the severe failure can be forecasted accurately by the failure countdown prediction module. 展开更多

Many rock types have naturally occurring inherent anisotropic planes, such as bedding planes, foliation,or flow structures. Such characteristic induces directional features and anisotropy in rocks' strength anddeformational properties. The HoekeBrown (HeB) failure criterion is an empirical strength criterionwidely applied to rock mechanics and engineering. A direct modification to HeB failure criterion toaccount for rock anisotropy is considered as the base of the research. Such modification introduced a newdefinition of the anisotropy as direct parameter named the anisotropic parameter (Kb). However, thecomputation of this parameter takes much experimental work and cannot be calculated in a simple way.The aim of this paper is to study the trend of the relation between the degree of anisotropy (Rc) and theminimum value of anisotropic parameter (Kmin), and to predict the Kmin directly from the uniaxialcompression tests instead of triaxial tests, and also to decrease the amount of experimental work. 2014 Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Sand production is an undesired phenomenon occurring in unconsolidated formations due to shear failure and hydrodynamic forces. There have been many approaches developed to predict sand production and prevent it by changing drilling or production strategies. However, assumptions involved in these approaches have limited their applications to very specific scenarios. In this paper, an elliptical model based on the borehole shape is presented to predict the volume of sand produced during the drilling and depletion stages of oil and gas reservoirs. A shape factor parameter is introduced to estimate the changes in the geometry of the borehole as a result of shear failure. A carbonate reservoir from the south of Iran with a solid production history is used to show the application of the developed methodology. Deriving mathematical equations for determination of the shape factor based on different failure criteria indicate that the effect of the intermediate principal stress should be taken into account to achieve an accurate result. However, it should be noticed that the methodology presented can only be used when geomechanical parameters are accurately estimated prior to the production stage when using wells and field data. 展开更多
