Friendship paradox states that individuals are likely to have fewer friends than their friends do,on average.Despite of its wide existence and appealing applications in real social networks,the mathematical understanding of friendship paradox is very limited.Only few works provide theoretical evidence of single-step and multi-step friendship paradoxes,given that the neighbors of interest are onehop and multi-hop away from the target node.However,they consider non-evolving networks,as opposed to the topology of real social networks that are constantly growing over time.We are thus motivated to present a first look into friendship paradox in evolving networks,where newly added nodes preferentially attach themselves to those with higher degrees.Our analytical verification of both single-step and multistep friendship paradoxes in evolving networks,along with comparison to the non-evolving counterparts,discloses that“friendship paradox is even more paradoxical in evolving networks”,primarily from three aspects:1)we demonstrate a strengthened effect of single-step friendship paradox in evolving networks,with a larger probability(more than 0.8)of a random node’s neighbors having higher average degree than the random node itself;2)we unravel higher effectiveness of multi-step friendship paradox in seeking for influential nodes in evolving networks,as the rate of reaching the max degree node can be improved by a factor of at least Θ(t^(2/3))with t being the network size;3)we empirically verify our findings through both synthetic and real datasets,which suggest high agreements of results and consolidate the reasonability of evolving model for real social networks. 展开更多

The“obesity paradox”in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)suggests patients with obesity may experience better treatment outcomes compared to patients without obesity.Wang et al highlighted this paradox in HCC immunotherapy,demonstrating superior progression-free survival and overall survival in patients with overweight and obesity treated with lenvatinib and camrelizumab,focusing on hepatitis B virus-related HCC.Mechanisms such as better nutritional reserves,leptin-mediated immune modulation,and reduced protein breakdown may explain these outcomes.Obesity’s role in anti-programmed cell death protein-1 therapy appears could have a benefit,while its effects on other treatments,such as anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy,may reduce efficacy.Further research is needed to explore how obesity influences the effectiveness of other most common immunotherapies like nivolumab,pembrolizumab,and bevacizumab,and whether weight loss as well as weight-loss related sarcopenia impacts these benefits. 展开更多

For the first time in human history,hundreds of millions of people all over the world have been subjected to compulsory vaccination with a new type of nucleic acid based vaccines in order to keep their jobs or be able to travel due to some notorious coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)mandates.The vast majority of African countries were either initially deprived of these vaccines,or later,a majority of the population was too skeptical to receive them and preferred a safe early treatment pharmacological approach.Yet,Africa had the lowest COVID-19 mortality rate compared to those countries that adopted mass vaccination.This letter to the editor adds African insights that should be helpful in future pandemics to save millions of precious lives. 展开更多

The Paradox of Goodwill Measurement and the Impact of M&A Synergy Effects on Goodwill Measurement

This study aims to elucidate the formation mechanism of the goodwill measurement paradox and assess the impact of M&A synergy effects on goodwill measurement.Drawing upon empirical evidence from case studies,such as the Geely-Volvo acquisition,and broader empirical research on listed companies,the study seeks to offer practical guidance for refining industry-specific goodwill measurement standards within the registration system.Based on the"Institutional Environment-Synergy Effect-Goodwill Measurement"analytical framework,this study selects 528 non-same-control M&A samples of A-share listed companies from 2018 to 2023 as the research objects,and uses principal component analysis and a moderated mediation model to empirically test the impact of operational,financial,and management synergy effects on goodwill measurement,as well as the moderating roles of industry heterogeneity and policy changes.The conclusions are as follows:1.The current"difference method"in goodwill measurement shows a significant deviation,with non-synergistic premiums accounting for 21.5%,and reaching as high as 34.2%in technology-intensive industries.2.Operational,financial,and tax synergy effects all have a positive impact on goodwill measurement,with operational synergy being the most significant(coefficient 0.315***),amplifying to 0.471***in technology-intensive industries.Synergy effects are mainly transmitted through M&A premiums,with the mediating effect of operational synergy accounting for 42.8%.3.After the policy strengthening in 2019,the correlation between synergy effects and goodwill measurement increased by 12.5%,but technology-intensive industries still have a high impairment rate of 15.2%,indicating that policies have yet to fully eradicate the disparities in measurement risks among industries.4.This study is the first to quantify the moderating effects of policy changes and industry attributes on goodwill measurement,theoretically unveiling the core of the goodwill measurement paradox,and practically offering crucial guidance for refining relevant regulations,enhancing valuationtion systems,and formulating regulatory policies. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy(HBOT)can cause paradoxical herniation is still unclear.CASE SUMMARY A 65-year-old patient who was comatose due to brain trauma underwent decompressive craniotomy and gradually regained consciousness after surgery.HBOT was administered 22 d after surgery due to speech impairment.Paradoxical herniation appeared on the second day after treatment,and the patient’s condition worsened after receiving mannitol treatment at the rehabilitation hospital.After timely skull repair,the paradoxical herniation was resolved,and the patient regained consciousness and had a good recovery as observed at the follow-up visit.CONCLUSION Paradoxical herniation is rare and may be caused by HBOT.However,the underlying mechanism is unknown,and the understanding of this phenomenon is insufficient.The use of mannitol may worsen this condition.Timely skull repair can treat paradoxical herniation and prevent serious complications. 展开更多

The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)mortality rate in 55 African countries is almost 4.5 times lower than in the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)despite Africa having over 4.2 times more people.This mortality paradox is also evident when comparing Nigeria,a heavily populated,poorly vaccinated and weakly mandated country to Israel,a small,highly vaccinated and strictly mandated country.Nigeria has almost 4 times lower COVID mortality than Israel.In this Field of Vision perspective,I explain how this paradox has evolved drawing upon my academic,clinical and social experience.Since April 2020,I’ve developed and been using the Egyptian immune-modulatory Kelleni’s protocol to manage COVID-19 patients including pediatric,geriatric,pregnant,immune-compromised and other individuals suffering from multiple comorbidities.It’s unfortunate that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is still evolving accompanied by more deaths.However in Africa,we’ve been able to live without anxiety or mandates throughout the pandemic because we trust science and adopted early treatment using safe,and effective repurposed drugs that have saved the majority of COVID-19 patients.This article represents an African and Egyptian tale of honor. 展开更多

Quantum paradoxes are essential means to reveal the incompatibility between quantum and classical theories,among which the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen(EPR)steering paradox offers a sharper criterion for the contradiction between localhidden-state model and quantum mechanics than the usual inequality-based method.In this work,we present a generalized EPR steering paradox,which predicts a contradictory equality“2_(Q)=(1+δ)_(C)”(0≤δ<1)given by the quantum(Q)and classical(C)theories.For any N-qubit state in which the conditional state of the steered party is pure,we test the paradox through a two-setting steering protocol,and find that the state is steerable if some specific measurement requirements are satisfied.Moreover,our construction also enlightens the building of EPR steering inequality,which may contribute to some schemes for typical quantum teleportation and quantum key distributions. 展开更多

BACKGROUND To date,this is the first case of a paradoxical embolism(PDE)that concurrently manifested in the coronary and lower limb arteries and was secondary to a central venous catheter(CVC)thrombus via a patent foramen ovale(PFO).CASE SUMMARY Here,we report a case of simultaneous coronary and lower limb artery embolism in a PFO patient carrier of a CVC.The patient presented to the hospital with acute chest pain and lower limb fatigue.Doppler ultrasound showed a large thrombus in the right internal jugular vein,precisely at the tip of the CVC.Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography confirmed the existence of a PFO,with inducible right-to-left shunting by the Valsalva maneuver.The patient was administered an extended course of anticoagulation therapy,and then the CVC was successfully removed.Percutaneous PFO closure was not undertaken.There was no recurrence during follow-up.CONCLUSION Thus,CVC-associated thrombosis is a potential source for multiple PDE in PFO patients. 展开更多

数字化转型作为推动基层治理现代化的关键动力,已成为政府治理改革的重要路径。然而,在实践中呈现出结构性矛盾:数字治理系统表面上高度智能高效,实际运行中却因数据失真、技术脱节、考核异化等导致治理效能偏离,形成技术表象与治理实... 数字化转型作为推动基层治理现代化的关键动力,已成为政府治理改革的重要路径。然而,在实践中呈现出结构性矛盾:数字治理系统表面上高度智能高效,实际运行中却因数据失真、技术脱节、考核异化等导致治理效能偏离,形成技术表象与治理实质的背离。本研究提出“数治幻觉”概念,系统考察这一偏差现象。通过对B市基层治理体系的案例研究,结合扎根理论分析,本研究发现“数治幻觉”主要表现为四种悖论:数据质量、需求响应、考核机制和治理韧性。本研究进一步构建四维分析框架揭示技术理性与行政理性在特定制度环境下形成自我强化系统的生成机制,以及中国压力型体制对数字化治理的独特影响和基层组织的能动应对策略。本研究丰富了数字治理理论,为破解“数治幻觉”提供了系统性思路,也为理解技术与制度互构关系、推动治理现代化提供了新的理论视角和实践启示。 展开更多

Olbers’s paradox, known as the dark night paradox, is an argument in astrophysics that the darkness of the night sky conflicts with the assumption of an infinite and eternal static universe. Big-Bang theory was used to partially explain this paradox, while introducing new problems. Hereby, we propose a better theory, named Sun Matters Theory, to explain this paradox. Moreover, this unique theory supports and extended the Einstein’s static universe model proposed by Albert Einstein in 1917. Further, we proposed our new universe model, “Sun Model of Universe”. Based on the new model and novel theory, we generated innovative field equation by upgrading Einstein’s Field Equation through adding back the cosmological constant, introducing a new variable and modifying the gravitationally-related concepts. According to the Sun Model of Universe, the dark matter and dark energy comprise the so-called “Sun Matters”. The observed phenomenon like the red shift is explained as due to the interaction of ordinary light with Sun Matters leading to its energy and frequency decrease. In Sun Model, our big universe consists of many universes with ordinary matter at the core mixed and surrounded with the Sun Matters. When lights pass by the sun, the Sun Waters deflect the lights to bend the light path. 算力是信息化、数字化、智能化时代的新质生产力,是大国博弈利器。算力竞争战略选择关乎一国能否抓住新技术新产业革命机遇,实现综合国力跃迁式增长。以技术-经济范式模型为理论依据,结合全球人工智能发展实践,本文提出我国目前处于算... 算力是信息化、数字化、智能化时代的新质生产力,是大国博弈利器。算力竞争战略选择关乎一国能否抓住新技术新产业革命机遇,实现综合国力跃迁式增长。以技术-经济范式模型为理论依据,结合全球人工智能发展实践,本文提出我国目前处于算力技术革命从导入期过渡到展开期的关键节点,算力发展战略重点应从算力基础设施转移至算力经济领域。高质量算力经济通过整体配置社会资源引领我国进入算力技术革命展开期,充分释放算力市场潜力。以DeepSeek为代表的自主可控产业链、创新性创业主体、经济生态赋能、经济逻辑引导技术创新、因地制宜发展中国式算力经济的复杂算力经济系统,为算力经济高质量发展提供了示范效应。伴随算力市场的扩张,需要提前完善算力市场机制并拓展市场功能。本文认为,应关注“杰文斯悖论(Jevons Paradox)”前瞻性布局与高质量算力经济匹配的算力设施建设;积极完善研发引领长期盈利的竞争机制,以集成创新驱动算力经济,推动完善价值共创机制,壮大算力商品市场和匹配市场。 展开更多

专精特新为中小企业指明了成长方向,然而现有文献尚未对动态情境下数字技术推动中小企业成长为专精特新企业的过程展开深入研究。基于悖论理论与资源行动理论,以国家级专精特新“小巨人”企业同心智医的成长实践为研究对象,采用探索性... 专精特新为中小企业指明了成长方向,然而现有文献尚未对动态情境下数字技术推动中小企业成长为专精特新企业的过程展开深入研究。基于悖论理论与资源行动理论,以国家级专精特新“小巨人”企业同心智医的成长实践为研究对象,采用探索性单案例研究方法,探究数字技术推动中小企业成长为专精特新企业的过程机制,研究结果表明:(1)中小企业历经“专业进入—精细扎根—特色扩张—新颖突破”四个阶段逐步成长为专精特新企业,其间悖论要素不断转化,经历“根本悖论—内生悖论—外生悖论—核心悖论”的层层迭代;(2)数字技术支撑下的“数字链接—数字协同—数字驱动—数字预测”指引相关资源行动,帮助中小企业有效应对悖论,沉淀专精特新能力;(3)基于对悖论要素的识别和对数字技术核心功能的解码,企业的资源行动方式不断升级,采取“创业资源拼凑—利用式资源编排—探索式资源编排—整合式资源编排”的资源行动策略。中小企业向专精特新企业成长的过程模型丰富了悖论和资源行动相关理论,并为中小企业制定管理策略和政府部门出台相关政策提供启示。 展开更多
