By introducing noncanonical vortex pairs to partially coherent beams, spatial correlation singularity (SCS) and orbital angular momenta (OAM) of the resulting beams are studied using the Fraunhofer diffraction integral. The effect of noncanonical strength, off-axis distance and vortex sign on spatial correlation singularities in far field is stressed. Furthermore, far-field OAM spectra and densities are also investigated, and the OAM detection and crosstalk probabilities are discussed. The results show that the number of dislocations of SCS always equals the sum of absolute values of topological charges for canonical or noncanonical vortex pairs. Although the sum of the product of each OAM mode and its power weight equals the algebraic sum of topological charges for canonical vortex pairs, the relationship no longer holds in the noncanonical case except for opposite-charge vortex pairs. The changes of off-axis distance, noncanonical strength or coherence length can lead to a more dominant power in adjacent mode than that in center detection mode, which also indicates that crosstalk probabilities of adjacent modes exceed the center detection probability. This work may provide potential applications in OAM-based optical communication, imaging, sensing and computing. 展开更多

Optical orbital angular momentum(OAM)mode multiplexing has emerged as a promising technique for boosting communication capacity. However, most existing studies have concentrated on channel(de)-multiplexing,overlooking the critical aspect of channel routing. This challenge involves the reallocation of multiplexed OAM modes across both spatial and temporal domains—a vital step for developing versatile communication networks. To address this gap,we introduce a novel approach based on the time evolution of OAM modes, utilizing the orthogonal conversion and diffractive modulation capabilities of unitary transformations. This approach facilitates high-dimensional orthogonal transformations of OAM mode vectors, altering both the propagation direction and the spatial location.Using Fresnel diffraction matrices as unitary operators,it manipulates the spatial locations of light beams during transmission, breaking the propagation invariance and enabling temporal evolution. As a demonstration,we have experimentally implemented the deep routing of four OAM modes within two distinct time sequences.Achieving an average diffraction efficiency above 78.31%,we have successfully deep-routed 4.69 Tbit-s^(-1)quadrature phase-shift keying(QPSK)signals carried by four multiplexed OAM channels, with a bit error rate below 10^(-6).These results underscore the efficacy of our routing strategy and its promising prospects for practical applications. 展开更多

We propose a method to measure the flatness of an object with a petal-like pattern generated by the interference of the measured orbital angular momentum(OAM)beam and the reference OAM beam which carries the opposite OAM state.By calculating the difference between the petal rotation angle without/with the object, the thickness information of the object, and then the flatness information, can be evaluated.Furthermore, the direction of the object’s flatness can be determined by the petal’s clockwise/counterclockwise rotation. We theoretically analyze the relationship between the object’s thickness and petal rotation angle, and verify the proposed method by experiment. The experimental results show that the proposed method is a high precision flatness measurement and can obtain the convex/concave property of the flatness. For the 1.02 mm glass sample, the mean deviation of the flatness is 1.357×10^(-8) and the variance is 0.242×10^(-16).For the 0.50 mm glass sample, the mean deviation of the flatness is 1.931×10^(-8) and the variance is 2.405×10^(-16).Two different topological charges are adopted for the 2.00 mm glass sample, and their flatness deviations are 0.239×10^(-8)(ℓ=1)and 0.246×10^(-8)(ℓ=2),where their variances are 0.799×10^(-18)(ℓ=1)and 0.775×10^(-18)(ℓ=2),respectively.It is shown that the flatness measured by the proposed method is the same for the same sample when different topological charges are used. All results indicate that the proposed method may provide a high flatness measurement, and will be a promising way to measure the flatness. 展开更多

Optical phased arrays(OPAs)are crucial in beam-steering applications, particularly as transmitters in light detection and ranging and free-space communication systems. In this paper,we demonstrate a on-chip OPA that emits multiple orbital angular momentum(OAM)beams in different directions, each carrying unique topological charges.By superimposing a forked 1×3 Dammann grating on the grating array, six OAM beams with topological charges of ±3,±4,and±5 can be radiated from the OPA region. The OPA chip was fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform, and the simultaneous generation of multiple OAM beams was realized experimentally. The directions of these vortices can be steered by adjusting the wavelength of the input light and the bias voltages of the phase shifters, enabling a remarkable field of view(FOV)of 140 deg×40 deg within a 120-nm wavelength range. We pave the way for developing systems with ultrawide FOVs,improving the resolution of remote sensing and broadening the possibilities of free-space communications. 展开更多

The decoherence of high-dimensional orbital angular momentum(OAM)entanglement in the weak scintillation regime has been investigated. In this study,we simulate atmospheric turbulence by utilizing a multiple-phase screen imprinted with anisotropic non-Kolmogorov turbulence. The entanglement negativity and fidelity are introduced to quantify the entanglement of a high-dimensional OAM state. The numerical evaluation results indicate that entanglement negativity and fidelity last longer for a high-dimensional OAM state when the azimuthal mode has a lower value.Additionally, the evolution of higher-dimensional OAM entanglement is significantly influenced by OAM beam parameters and turbulence parameters.Compared to isotropic atmospheric turbulence, anisotropic turbulence has a lesser influence on highdimensional OAM entanglement. 展开更多

Quantum secure direct communication(QSDC) is a communication method based on quantum mechanics and it is used to transmit secret messages. Unlike quantum key distribution, secret messages can be transmitted directly on a quantum channel with QSDC. Higher channel capacity and noise suppression capabilities are key to achieving longdistance quantum communication. Here, we report a continuous-variable QSDC scheme based on mask-coding and orbital angular momentum, in which the mask-coding is employed to protect the security of the transmitting messages and to suppress the influence of excess noise. The combination of orbital angular momentum and information block transmission effectively improves the secrecy capacity. In the 800 information blocks ×1310 bits length 10-km experiment, the results show a statistical average bit error rate of 0.38%, a system excess noise value of 0.0184 SNU, and a final secrecy capacity of 6.319×10~6 bps. Therefore, this scheme reduces error bits while increasing secrecy capacity, providing a solution for long-distance large-scale quantum communication, which is capable of transmitting text, images and other information of reasonable size. 展开更多

Since Allen et al.demonstrated 30 years ago that beams with helical wavefronts carry orbital angular momentum(OAM),the OAM of beams has attracted extensive attention and stimulated lots of applications in both classical and quantum physics.Akin to an optical frequency comb,a beam can carry multiple various OAM components simultaneously.A series of discrete, equally spaced, and equally weighted OAM modes comprise an OAM comb.Inspired by the spatially extended laser lattice,we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally an approach to producing OAM combs through azimuthal binary phases. Our study shows that transition points in the azimuth determine the OAM distributions of diffracted beams.Multiple azimuthal transition points lead to a wide OAM spectrum. Moreover,an OAM comb with any mode spacing is achievable through reasonably setting the position and number of azimuthal transition points. The experimental results fit well with theory. This work presents a simple approach that opens new prospects for OAM spectrum manipulation and paves the way for many applications including OAM-based high-security encryption and optical data transmission, and other advanced applications. 展开更多

In this paper, we propose a measurement-device-independent quantum-key-distribution(MDI-QKD) protocol using orbital angular momentum(OAM) in free space links, named the OAM-MDI-QKD protocol. In the proposed protocol, the OAM states of photons, instead of polarization states, are used as the information carriers to avoid the reference frame alignment, the decoy-state is adopted to overcome the security loophole caused by the weak coherent pulse source, and the high efficient OAM-sorter is adopted as the measurement tool for Charlie to obtain the output OAM state. Here, Charlie may be an untrusted third party. The results show that the authorized users, Alice and Bob, could distill a secret key with Charlie's successful measurements, and the key generation performance is slightly better than that of the polarization-based MDI-QKD protocol in the two-dimensional OAM cases. Simultaneously, Alice and Bob can reduce the number of flipping the bits in the secure key distillation. It is indicated that a higher key generation rate performance could be obtained by a high dimensional OAM-MDI-QKD protocol because of the unlimited degree of freedom on OAM states. Moreover, the results show that the key generation rate and the transmission distance will decrease as the growth of the strength of atmospheric turbulence(AT) and the link attenuation. In addition, the decoy states used in the proposed protocol can get a considerable good performance without the need for an ideal source. 展开更多

A dual-guided photonic crystal fiber(PCF) with low and flattened dispersion is designed, which can support a large number of orbital angular momentum(OAM) modes. The properties of the proposed PCF are systematically analyzed through the finite element method. The results show that the proposed PCF can support up to 84 OAM modes with 600 nm bandwidth ranging from 1000 to1600 nm. All values of mode purity are above 91.7%, the isolation parameters are larger than 67 dB and the maximum value up to 145 dB, the lowest confinement loss is only 5×10^(-13) dB·m^(-1).More importantly, the values of dispersion for all modes are less than 40 ps·km-1·nm-1, and the lowest dispersion variation is only 0.7 ps·km^(-1)·nm^(-1). These superior optical properties make the proposed PCF have great advantage in stable transmissions of data and long-distance optical fiber communication system with large capacity. 展开更多

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode division provides a promising solution to push past the already exhausted available degrees of freedom available in conventional optical communications. Nevertheless, the practical deploymentof OAM within a free-space optical (FSO) communications system is still hampered by a major challenge, namely that OAM-based FSO links are vulnerable to disturbances. Though several techniques, such as using various non-diffraction beams and multiple transmit–receive apertures, are proposed to alleviate the influence of disturbances, these techniquessignificantly reduce the performance with regard to combating single fading for spatial blockages of the laser beam byobstructions. In this work, we initially demonstrate that a Fabry-Pérot resonant cavity has the ability to implement OAM mode healing, even for a blocking percentage of over 50%. Consequently, the proposed method will expand the use ofOAM in the FSO secure communications and quantum encryption fields. 展开更多

To explore the effect of non-uniform polarization on orbital angular momentum(OAM) in anisotropic medium, in this work investigated are the evolution of the spiral spectra and OAM densities of non-uniformly polarized vortex(NUPV)beams in uniaxial crystals propagating orthogonal to the optical axis, and also the case of uniformly polarized vortex(UPV)beams with left-handed elliptical polarization. In the input plane, the NUPV beams present their spiral spectra of m-mode concentrated at m = l ± 1 modes rather than m = l mode, and reveal the relation among topological charge l, mode of spiral spectra m and the power weight value Rmexpressed by l=∑^(∞)_(m)=-∞Rm. is still satisfied for UPV beams in uniaxially anisotropic crystals, whereas for NUPV beams their relations are no longer valid owing to non-uniform polarization. Furthermore, the analysis indicates that the asymmetrical distribution of power weight of spiral spectra and the non-zero value in the sum of longitudinal OAM densities originate from the initial non-uniform polarization and anisotropy in uniaxial crystals rather than topological charges. In addition, the relation between spiral spectrum and longitudinal OAM density is numerically discussed. This work may provide an avenue for OAM-based communications, optical metrology, and imaging by varying the initial non-uniform polarization. 展开更多

Based on angular amplitude modulation of orthogonal base vectors in common-path interference method, we propose an interesting type of hybrid vector beams with unprecedented azimuthal polarization gradient and demonstrate in experiment. Geometrically, the configured azimuthal polarization gradient is indicated by intriguing mapping tracks of angular polarization states on Poincaré sphere, more than just conventional circles for previously reported vector beams. Moreover, via tailoring relevant parameters, more special polarization mapping tracks can be handily achieved. More noteworthily, the designed azimuthal polarization gradients are found to be able to induce azimuthally non-uniform orbital angular momentum density, while generally uniform for circle-track cases, immersing in homogenous intensity background whatever base states are. These peculiar features may open alternative routes for new optical effects and applications. 展开更多

Orbital angular momentum(OAM)holography has become a promising technique in information encryption, data storage and opto-electronic computing, owing to the infinite topological charge of one single OAM mode and the orthogonality of different OAM modes. In this paper,we propose a novel OAM hologram generation method based on a densely connected U-net(DCU),where the densely connected convolution blocks(DCB)replace the convolution blocks of the U-net.Importantly,the reconstruction process of the OAM hologram is integrated into DCU as its output layer,so as to eliminate the requirement to prepare training data for the OAM hologram, which is required by conventional neural networks through an iterative algorithm. The experimental and simulation results show that the OAM hologram can rapidly be generated with the well-trained DCU,and the reconstructed image's quality from the generated OAM hologram is significantly improved in comparison with those from the Gerchberg-Saxton generation method, the Gerchberg-Saxton based generation method and the U-net method. In addition,a 10-bit OAM multiplexing hologram scheme is numerically demonstrated to have a high capacity with OAM hologram. 展开更多

We investigate the dynamic quantities:momentum, spin and orbital angular momenta(SAM and OAM),and their conversion relationship in the structured optical fields at subwavelength scales, where the spin–orbit interaction(SOI)plays a key role and determines the behaviors of light.Specifically,we examine a nanostructure of a Ag nanoparticle(Ag NP)attached on a cylindrical Ag nanowire(Ag NW)under illumination of elliptically polarized light. These dynamic quantities obey the Noether theorem,i.e.,for the Ag nanoparticle with spherical symmetry, the total angular momentum consisting of SAM and OAM conserves;for the Ag NW with translational symmetry, the orbital momentum conserves.Meanwhile, the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion is mediated by SOI arising from the spatial variation of the optical potential. In this nanostructure, the conservation of momentum imposes a strict restriction on the propagation direction of the surface plasmon polaritons along the Ag NW.Meanwhile, the orbital momentum is determined by the polarized properties of the excitation light and the topography of the Ag NP.Our work offers insights to comprehend the light behaviors in the structured optical fields in terms of the dynamic quantities and benefits to the design of optical nano-devices based on interactions between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. 展开更多
