This paper presents the design and analysis of optical filters that are placed at the output of directly modulated vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) in the process of inexpensive transmitter's implementation for upcoming generation optical access network. Generation of non return to zero (NRZ) optical signal from the transmitter for 110 km error-free single mode fiber (SMF) transmission at 10 Gb/s with bit error rate (BER) of 10-30 in the absence of the external modulator and encoder was proposed. Effects of super-Gaussian and Butterworth optical filters at VCSEL output were demonstrated to maximize performance of SMF optical systems without need of any dispersion compensation technique. 展开更多

It can realize demodulation of distributed fiber Bragg grating(FBG) measurement system. Its scanning resolution and scanning period depend on wavelet function. Wavelet function is controlled by computer. Compared to conventional scan filter, optical wavelet filtering has some advantages such as simple structure, high scan frequency, high resolution and good linearity. At last, the error of optical wavelet filter scanning procedure is analyzed. Scanning step length refers to the shifting of optical wavelet window's central frequency. It affects system precision directly. If scanning step length is different, the measured signal is different. The methods of reducing step length guarantee scanning periodic time are presented. 展开更多

Many modulation formats with continuously adjustable duty radio and bit rate can be formed by changing the dispersion of dispersion element and the bandwidth of shaped spectrum in this scheme. In the experiment, non-return-to-zero(NRZ) signal with bit rate of 29.41 Gbit/s and 1/2 duty ratio return-to-zero(RZ) signal with bit rate of 13.51 Gbit/s are obtained. The combining microelectronic devices and associated technologies onto a single silicon chip poses a substantial challenge.However,in recent years,the area of silicon photonics has experienced remarkable advancements and notable leaps in performance.The performance of silicon on insulator(SOI)based photonic devices,such as fast silicon optical modulators,photonic transceivers,optical filters,etc.,have been discussed.This would be a step forward in creating standalone silicon photonic devices,strengthening the possibility of single on-chip nanophotonic integrated circuits.Suppose an integrated silicon photonic chip is designed and fabricated.In that case,it might drastically modify these combined photonic component costs,power consumption,and size,bringing substantial,perhaps revolutionary,changes to the next-generation communications sector.Yet,the monolithic integration of photonic and electrical circuitry is a significant technological difficulty.A complicated set of factors must be carefully considered to determine which application will have the best chance of success employing silicon-based integrated product solutions.The processing limitations connected to the current process flow,the process generation(sometimes referred to as lithography node generation),and packaging requirements are a few of these factors to consider.This review highlights recent developments in integrated silicon photonic devices and their proven applications,including but not limited to photonic waveguides,photonic amplifiers and filters,onchip photonic transceivers,and the state-of-the-art of silicon photonic in multidimensional quantum systems.The investigated devices aim to expedite the transfer of silicon photonics from academia to industry by opening the next phase in on-chip silicon photonics and enabling the application of silicon photonic-based devices in various optical systems. 展开更多

Several approaches to fabricate micro optical elements by use of half tone masks are studied and compared. It is shown that half tone masks employed in filtering image systems can obtain gray patterns with considerably high precision, but it is hard to operate from the viewpoint of operation. The method using contacting lithography technology or laser ablation can be easily operated with the cost of reducing fabrication precision and the trouble of choosing appropriate materials. For all of these methods, the coding of half tone masks with corrections for the nonlinear characteristics of coding, imaging and photoresist is recommended. 展开更多

A narrow linewidth Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter(FADOF)with reflection configuration is achieved for the first time based on the cesium(Cs)ground state 6S_(1/2) to the excited state 6P_(3/2) transition at 852 nm.Compared with the conventional FADOF with transmission configuration,reflection-type FADOF can greatly improve the transmittance of optical filter under the same experimental parameters,because it allows signal light to go and return through the atomic vapor cell.In our experiment,peak transmittance at Cs 6S_(1/2) F=4-6P_(3/2) transition is 81%for the reflection-type FADOF,and while 54%for the transmission-type FADOF when the temperature of Cs vapor cell and the axial magnetic field are 60℃and 19 G.The idea of this reflection-type FADOF design has the potential to be applied to the FADOF operating between two excited states to obtain higher transmittance. 展开更多

We present a new type of optical filter with an ultra-narrow bandwidth and a wide field-of-view (FOV). This kind of optical filter consists of one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) incorporating an anomalous-dispersion-material (ADM) with, for instance, an anomalous dispersion of 6P3/2←6S1/2 hyperfine structure transition of a caesium atom. The transmission spectra of optical filters are calculated by using the transfer-matrix method. The simulation results show that the designed optical filter has a bandwidth narrower than 0.33GHz and a wide FOV of ±30°as well. The response of transmission spectrum to an external magnetic field is also investigated. 展开更多

We numerically investigate the transmission properties of a subwavelength composite hole-pillar array. As the radius of the pillar increases, the transmission properties experience a complex evolution. It is found that the magnetic dipole resonance of the pillar suppresses the surface plasmon polariton resonance (SPPR) at the gold-air interface. There are two strong transmission peaks associated with the magnetic dipole resonance of pillar and SPPR at the gold-silica interface. A peak associated with magnetic quadrupole resonance of the pillar is observed. Moreover, there is a weak peak associated with the coupling between the whispering-gallery plasmon (WGP) mode and magnetic dipole. Our work is helpful for making a dual band optical filter. 展开更多

In this paper, a partial discharge detection system is proposed using an optical fiber Fabry-Perot(FP) interferometric sensor, which is fabricated by photolithography. SU-8 photoresist is employed due to its low Young's modulus and potentially high sensitivity for ultrasound detection. The FP cavity is formed by coating the fiber end face with two layers of SU-8 so that the cavity can be controlled by the thickness of the middle layer of SU-8. Static pressure measurement experiments are done to estimate the sensing performance. The results show that the SU-8 based sensor has a sensitivity of 154.8 nm/kP a, which is much higher than that of silica based sensor under the same condition. Moreover, the sensor is demonstrated successfully to detect ultrasound from electrode discharge. 展开更多

The analysis on the traditional asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer (AMZI) optical filter based on two 3 dB directional couplers (DCs) shows that by adding an additional nonlinear phase generated by phase-generating coupler (PGC) to the original phase difference of the AMZI, its non-periodic frequency response can be modified, and a strictly periodic spectrum can be obtained. A novel structure of the AMZI filter using two PGCs before and after the AMZI region is proposed. With the needed free spectrum range (FSR) of 20 nm, the design and optimization of the device are performed using polymer SU-8 as the core and PMMA-GMA as the buffer. Though the insertion loss (IL) gets larger than that of the traditional AMZI filter, the FSR is nearly uniform as the expected period of 20 nm. 展开更多

In this paper, we design and fabricate a silicon integrated optical filter consisting of two cascaded micro-ring resonators and two straight waveguides. Two micro-heaters are fabricated on the top of two micro-rings respectively, which are employed to modulate the micro-rings to perform the function of a tunable optical filter by the thermo–optic effect. The static response test indicates that the extinction ratio and 3-d B bandwidth are 29.01 d B and 0.21 nm respectively, the dynamic response test indicates that the 10%–90% rise and 90%–10% fall time of the filter are 16 μs and 12 μs, respectively,which can meet the requirements of optical communication and information processing. Finally, the power consumption of the device is also characterized, and the total power consumption is about 9.43 m W/nm, which has been improved efficiently. 展开更多

The rectangular optical filter is one of the most important optical switching components in the dense wavelength divi- sion multiplexing (DWDM) fiber-optic communication system and the intelligent optical network. The integrated high- order silicon microring resonator (MRR) is one of the best candidates to achieve rectangular filtering spectrum re- sponse. In general, the spectrum response rectangular degree of the single MRR is very low, so it cannot be used in the DWDM system. Using the high-order MRRs, the bandwidth of flat-top pass band, the out-of-band rejection degree and the roll-off coefficient of the edge will be improved obviously. In this paper, a rectangular optical filter based on high- order MRRs with uniform couplers is presented and demonstrated. Using 15 coupled race-track MRRs with 10 pm in radius, the 3 dB flat-top pass band of 2 nm, the out-of-band rejection ratio of 30 dB and the rising and falling edges of 48 dB/nm can be realized successfully. 展开更多

Purpose:To evaluate the potential clinical usability of a new prototype of ophthalmic blue light filters developed by using electrochromic technology in pseudophakic patients complaining of glare.Methods:A prototype of electrochromic device was developed,with a specific frame that enclosed an electronic driver that allowed personalizing its function for each patient.A pro-spective,observational case series study was performed to test it.Five patients who had un-dergone cataract surgery with clear intraocular lenses and complaining of glare were included in the study.Main outcome measures were the results obtained in the satisfaction questionnaire that was delivered to patients.Then,visual acuity,contrast sensitivity,and reading ability data were evaluated with and without the prototype under diferent lighting conditions and different modes of the prototype after a complete month of use.Lens transmittance was also measured.Results:Visual acuity,contrast sensitivity and reading function did not change significantly with prototype use.The main activity for which the prototype was used was walking.Only one patient found that the dimming level was insuficient.No patients reported variable discomfort when passing tunnels,not sufficiently clear indoors,or put on and remove discomfort.The lenses slightly decreased their transmittance at the end of the study.Conclusion:Glasses based on elect rochromic technology may be acceptable for outdoor/indoor use and for distance-near vision.Future studies with larger samples must be conducted to confirm the clinical usability of these glasses. 展开更多

Each prism and the ... A novel flat-top and low-dispersion optical interleaver using ring cavities (RCs) in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is proposed. It is composed of eight mirrors and two nested prism pairs. Each prism and the two mirrors behave as a RC. Phase shift of RC is a periodic function of the frequency of the input light which acts as a phase dispersive mirror. The two phase shifts needed to achieve a flat-top spectral passband are provided by Fresnel reflectivities at the prism-air interface of the two RCs. The optimum interface reflectivities for flat passband, high isolation and low dispersion can be obtained only by choosing an appropriate material for the prism in each RC. The proposed interleaver in a 25 GHz channel spacing application exhibits a 0.5 dB passband greater than 24 GHz (96% of the spacing), a 30 dB stopband greater than 21.2 GHz (84.8% of the spacing), a channel isolation higher than 32 dB and chromatic dispersion ±50 ps/nm within the range of center-frequency :t:2 GHz ITU passband. 展开更多

Controlled thermonuclear reactors require consistent monitoring of plasma in the toroidal chamber.Better working conditions of such machines can be monitored by analyzing its radiations.Various wavelengths such as 656.3,486.1,464.7 nm are quite significant which are used for health monitoring of thermonuclear machines.The optical thinfilmfilters which work on construc-tive and destructive interference are the ideal choices.Thesefilters are multi-layered with a pair of high and low refractive index dielectric materials.Significantly high transmission index at the desired wavelength and relatively low transmission at the other wavelengths are desired.With this as the objective,it is necessary to design thefilter.Various optimization techniques are used for identifying the suitable design of thefilters.To choose the parameter combination that provides the most excellent performance,optimization of the design para-meters is entailed.The goal of this work is to improve the optical bandfilter using the Bald eagle search optimization(BES)method.The ideal design is determined by assessing several characteristics such as thickness,refractive index,Full-Width at Half-Maximum(FWHM),and the impact of choosing optical properties,which increases transmission potential.Initially,an alternate multi-layer stack with 28,30,and 32 layers is created by altering the thickness while keeping the dielectric substances high and low refractive indices constant.By adjusting the thickness of each layer,the BES algorithm achieves the best practical solution.The proposed method is implemented using MATLAB and the outcomes show the efficacy of the proposed technique.The transmittance,reflectance,and FWHM using the pro-posed BES are found to be 99.9356%,0.065%,and 1.2 nm respectively. 展开更多

In this paper human face machine identification is experienced using optical correlation techniques in spatial frequency domain. This approach is tested on ORL dataset of faces which includes face images of 40 subjects, each in 10 different positions. The examined optical setup relies on optical correlation based on developing optical Vanderlugt filters and its basics are described in this article. With the limitation of face database of 40 persons, the recognition is examined successfully with nearly 100% of accuracy in matching the input images with their respective Vanderlugt synthesized filters. Software simulation is implemented by using MATLAB for face identification. 展开更多

The relationship between the transmitted blue beams and the incident yellow beams is established. The results show that the contrast of the novelty filter image depends on the lifetime of longest lived photochemical state (M state). A wideband tunable frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (FD-OEO) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on a polarization modulator and an optical bandpass filter (OBPF). The central frequency of the correspondingly fundamental OEO could be adjusted by tuning the bandwidth and central frequency of the OBPF, which could also be regarded as a photonic-assisted tunable microwave filter. The frequency tuning range of the FD-OEO covers from 9.5 to 32.8?GHz, and the single sideband phase noise of the fundamental signal is lower than -100dBc/Hz at an offset of 10?kHz. Moreover, the frequency stability of the generated signal is investigated by measuring its Allan deviation. The Allan deviation of the generated fundamental signal at 10?GHz is 2.39×10^-9. 展开更多
