Two main types of optical fiber amplifiers based on the Erbium- doped fiber (EDF) and the Raman effect have been developed to amplify signals in the MCF and FMF. And then numerical simulation was done to analyze and discuss the gain spectral characteristics of one-pump and two-pump FOPA. The results show that for one-pump FOPA, when pump wavelength is near to fiber zero-dispersion wavelength(ZDW), the gain flatness is better, and with the increase of the pump power, fiber length and its nonlinear coefficient, the gain value will increase while the gain bandwidth will become narrow. For two-pump FOPA, when the pump central wavelength is near to fiber ZDW, the gain flatness is better. Moreover, by decreasing the space of two pumps wavelength, the gain flatness can be improved. Finally, some problems existing in FOPA were addressed.展开更多

The absorption, emission properties, and local structure of the glasses were investigated. When excited at 808 nm diode laser, intense 1.32 and 1.55 μm near-infrared luminescence were observed with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of about 90 and 50 nm, respectively. The lifetime of the 1.32 μm emission varied due to changes in the local structure surrounding Dy^3+ ions. The longest lifetime was over 2.5 ms, and the value was significantly higher than that in other Dy^3+-doped glasses. Some other spectroscopic parameters were calculated by using Judd-Ofelt theory. Meanwhile, Ge-Ga-Se and GeSe2-Ga2Se3-CsI glasses showed good infrared transmittance. As a result, Dy^3+-doped Ge-Ga-Se and GeSe2-Ga2Se3-CsI glasses were believed to be useful hosts for 1.3 μm optical fiber amplifier.展开更多

Stable triple-wavelength lasing oscillations at room temperature are experimentally demonstrated. The measured optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) reaches the highest value of 50 dB and the power fluctuation of each wavelength is less than 0.2 dB within a 1-h period. To serve as a wavelength selective element, the CMFG possesses excellent comb-like filtering characteristics including stable wavelength interval and ultra-narrow passband, and its fabrication method is easy and flexible. The lasing oscillation shows a narrower bandwidth than SOA-based multi-wavelength fiber lasers utilizing some other kinds of wavelength selective components. Methods to optimize the laser performance are also discussed.展开更多

Then, 1P-FOPAs performance comparison among PCF, dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) and highly nonlinear fibers (HNLF) are carried out by numerical simulations. It is shown that the 1P-FOPA based on triangular PCF can provide higher peak gain over wider bandwidth. When the pump wavelength is at the zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDWL), about 108.7 nm single-pass gain bandwidth and 91.4 dB peak gain can be obtained; when in the normal dispersion regime and near zero-dispersion wavelength, not less than 46 nm single-pass gain bandwidth 77.1 nm away from pump can be achieved. Finally the influence of dispersion fluctuation is analyzed, and the result shows that the tolerance of the 1P-FOPA based on photonic crystal fiber is better.展开更多

To be able to satisfy the needs of high gain and high signal-to-noise ratio laser pulse amplification, different fiber lengths and core diameters are used to fulfill this experiment. In the experiment, a 430 nW (peak power) pulsed signal is amplified by 70 dB with a signal-to-noise ratio of 14 dB. The small size, high gain, low cost, and low noise of the fiber Brillouin amplifier make it a promising weak signal amplification method for practical applications such as lidar.展开更多

However, increasing the erbium ion (Er3+) concentration can reduce the EDF performance via the Er3+-Er3+ interaction. In this Letter, we investigate the Er3+-Er3+ interaction effect by designing a tunable erbium-doped fiberring laser (EDFRL). This is the first time (to the best of our knowledge) that someone has considered different numbers of ions per cluster and simulated the EDFRL output power degradation due to ion-ion interaction. If the number of ions in the cluster is increased, the lasing output power will decrease accordingly. The most dom- inant effect is seen in the 1530 nm wavelength region, where the EDF shows a higher signal absorption compared to the other wavelength region. Moreover, a comparison has been done for lasing performance analysis with different dopant ion concentrations. The comparison results show that a higher dopant concentration is advanta- geous for longer-wavelength lasing.展开更多

By suppressing the out-of-band signal with two broadened symmetric SBS losses, tunable pass bandwidths from 500 MHz to 9.5 GHz and the independent center frequency tunability are demonstrated. Considering the limited SBS interaction in the center frequency range,a flat-top response with minimum 0.3 dB ripple is achieved. Assisted by the extra suppression from polarization pulling, a maximum selectivity of 20 dB and an ultrahigh 250 dB∕GHz roll-off are reached. A gain-based SBS filter adds noise to the filtered signal. However, for our proposed filter setup, no additional noise is detected due to the transparency in the passband. Considering the wide independent bandwidth and center frequency tunability, flat-top response, and low-noise characteristic, our proposed filter can be perfectly used as a supplement of most commercialized conventional tunable optical single bandpass filters, whose minimum bandwidth is limited by 10 GHz.展开更多

In the numerical simulation, we found that the passive fiber segment after gain fiber characterizes the highest average B-integral among fiber segments. By reducing the length of this fiber section and keeping the total passive fiber length as constant, the output pulse energy can be effectively scaled up while maintaining a short dechirped pulse duration, resulting in boosting peak power. With this method, 37-n J pulses are generated from a dissipative-soliton mode-locked cladding pumped ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber laser in the experiment. The pulse can be dechirped to 66 fs with 350 k W peak power. Moreover, the pulse pedestal is suppressed by a vector-dispersion compressor.展开更多
