Grain crushing plays an important role in one-dimensional (1D) compression and creep behaviors of granular materials under high stress. It is clear that the macro-properties of granular materials are closely related to the micro-fracture properties of grains in 1D compression and creep tests. In this paper, a series of 1D compression and creep tests were performed on Ottawa sand to investigate the deformation and grain crushing properties of granular materials, and it shows that the void ratio is correlated to the grain crushing amount (the quantity of crushed grains) for granular materials subjected to grain crushing. The test results, combining with the existing test data related to grain crushing of granular materials, were used to verify the relation. Moreover, the implications of these relations on the yield of granular material, and the equivalent effect of stress and time in changing soil fabric are presented. 展开更多

A Discrete Element Method (DEM) model is developed to study the particle break- age effect on the one-dimensional compression behavior of silica sands. The 'maximum tensile stress' breakage criterion considering multiple contacts is adopted to simulate the crushing of circular particles in the DEM. The model is compared with published experimental results. Com- parison between the compression curves obtained from the numerical and experimental results shows that the proposed method is very effective in studying the compression behavior of silica sands considering particle breakage. The evolution of compression curves at different stress levels is extensively studied using contact force distribution, variation of contact number and particle size distribution curve with loading. It is found that particle breakage has great impact on com- pression behavior of sand, particularly after the yield stress is reached and particle breakage starts. The crushing probability of particles is found to be macroscopically affected by stress level and particle size distribution curve, and microscopically related to the evolutions of contact force and coordination number. Once the soil becomes well-graded and the average coordination number is greater than 4 in two-dimension, the crushing probability of parent particles can reduce by up to 5/6. It is found that the average contact force does not always increase with loading, but increases to a peak value then decreases once the soil becomes more well-graded. It is found through the loading rate sensitivity analysis that the compression behavior of sand samples in the DEM is also affected by the loading rate. Higher yield stresses are obtained at higher loading rates. 展开更多

In this paper, the densely arrayed bonded particle model is proposed for simulation of granular materials with discrete element method(DEM)considering particle crushing. This model can solve the problem of pore calculation after the grains are crushed, and reduce the producing time of specimen. In this work, several one-dimensional compressing simulations are carried out to investigate the effect of particle crushing on mechanical properties of granular materials under a wide range of stress. The results show that the crushing process of granular materials can be divided into four different stages according to er-logσy curves. At the end of the second stage, there exists a yield point, after which the physical and mechanical properties of specimens will change significantly.Under extremely high stress, particle crushing will wipe some initial information of specimens, and specimens with different initial gradings and void ratios present some similar characteristics.Particle crushing has great influence on grading, lateral pressure coefficient and compressibility of granular materials, and introduce extra irreversible volume deformation, which is necessary to be considered in modelling of granular materials in wide stress range. 展开更多

A symmetrical one-dimensional(1D)photonic crystal structure with a Dirac-emimetal-defected layer is proposed. The material properties of the Dirac semimetal are governed by three key parameters:Fermi level,Fermi velocity, and degeneracy factor.Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed structure generates multiple photonic bandgaps within the THz frequency range. In the low-THz region, pronounced resonant transmission peaks emerge, enabling near-perfect filtering performance. The positions of these defect modes can be dynamically tuned by adjusting the Fermi level and degeneracy factor. In mid-and high-THz frequency bands, the Dirac semimetal begins to exhibit metallic behavior, leading to attenuation of the transmission peaks and the appearance of absorption. The elevation of the Fermi level delays the critical threshold for the transition from the dielectric state to the metallic state, while an increase in Fermi velocity suppresses metallic behavior. Therefore, enhancing both the Fermi level and Fermi velocity contributes to strengthening the defect peak intensity.Conversely, increasing the degeneracy factor strengthens the metallic characteristics, thereby disrupting the high-frequency photonic bandgap.Notably, the defect layer thickness and incident angle exert significant influence on the transmission behavior:a larger incident angle causes the defect peak to shift toward higher frequencies and reduces its intensity, whereas a thicker defect layer shifts the defect peak toward lower frequencies. The modulation effects of both parameters become more pronounced as frequency increases.Compared with conventional photonic crystals, our work can provide a tunable structure over transmission properties, offering novel strategies for designing tunable filters and optical sensors. 展开更多

Photoacoustic-computed tomography is a novel imaging technique that combines high absorption contrast and deep tissue penetration capability, enabling comprehensive three-dimensional imaging of biological targets. However, the increasing demand for higher resolution and real-time imaging results in significant data volume, limiting data storage, transmission and processing efficiency of system. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an effective method to compress the raw data without compromising image quality. This paper presents a photoacoustic-computed tomography 3D data compression method and system based on Wavelet-Transformer.This method is based on the cooperative compression framework that integrates wavelet hard coding with deep learning-based soft decoding. It combines the multiscale analysis capability of wavelet transforms with the global feature modeling advantage of Transformers, achieving high-quality data compression and reconstruction.Experimental results using k-wave simulation suggest that the proposed compression system has advantages under extreme compression conditions, achieving a raw data compression ratio of up to 1:40.Furthermore,three-dimensional data compression experiment using in vivo mouse demonstrated that the maximum peak signal-to-noise ratio(PSNR)and structural similarity index(SSIM)values of reconstructed images reached 38.60 and 0.9583,effectively overcoming detail loss and artifacts introduced by raw data compression. All the results suggest that the proposed system can significantly reduce storage requirements and hardware cost, enhancing computational efficiency and image quality. These advantages support the development of photoacoustic-computed tomography toward higher efficiency,real-time performance and intelligent functionality. 展开更多

Rock brittleness is a critical property in geotechnical and energy engineering,as it directly influences the prediction of rock failure and stability assessment.Although numerous methods have been developed to evaluate brittleness, many fail to comprehensively account for the impacts of microstructural changes, mineralogical characteristics, and stress conditions on energy evolution during failure. This study proposes a novel approach for brittleness evaluation based on the energy evolution throughout the post-peak failure process, integrating two micromechanical mechanisms:crack propagation and frictional sliding.A new brittleness index is defined as the ratio of generated surface energy to released elastic energy, providing a unified framework for assessing both Class I and Class II mechanical behaviors. The brittleness of cyan, white, and gray sandstones was investigated under various confining pressures and moisture conditions using X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and conventional triaxial compression(CTC)tests. The results demonstrate that brittleness decreases with increasing confining pressure, due to suppressed crack propagation, and increases under saturated conditions,as moisture enhances crack propagation.By establishing connections between mineral composition, microstructural features, and stress-induced responses, the proposed method overcame limitations of previous approaches and offered a more precise tool for evaluating rock brittleness under diverse environmental scenarios. 展开更多

An in-depth understanding of the behaviours of solid propellants under low-velocity impact loads is crucial for enhancing their safety in applications such as aerospace propulsion. This study investigated the dynamic responses of single ammonium perchlorate(AP)/octogen(HMX)particles embedded in a hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene(HTPB)binder under dynamic compression loading via real-time synchrotron-based X-ray phase contrast imaging and a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)system. The compression of the viscoelastic binder and subsequent dynamic fracturing of the AP/HMX particles were captured.During compression, transverse cracks developed within the AP particles, and their propagation led to particle fracturing, resulting in ductile fracturing.Unlike AP,HMX generated numerous short cracks within the internal and edge regions simultaneously, leading to fragmentation and brittle fracturing. Moreover, particle damage reduced the modulus of the sample, shifting its dynamic stress response from nonlinear elasticity to strain softening and further strain hardening as the binder exhibited plastic deformation.A compression simulation incorporating a real particle microscopic structure was established to study the mechanical response of the interface and particles. The simulation results agreed with the experimental observations. These results indicate that the shear stress at the HTPB-AP interface is greater than that at the HTPB-HMX interface, which is a factor influencing the differences in the mesoscale damage mechanisms of the particles. 展开更多

To investigate the damage evolution caused by stress-driven and sub-critical crack propagation within the Beishan granite under multi-creep triaxial compressive conditions, the distributed optical fiber sensing and X-ray computed tomography were combined to obtain the strain distribution over the sample surface and internal fractures of the samples. The Gini and skewness(G-S)coefficients were used to quantify strain localization during tests, where the Gini coefficient reflects the degree of clustering of elements with high strain values,i.e.,strain localization/delocalization.The strain localization-induced asymmetry of data distribution is quantified by the skewness coefficient.A precursor to granite failure is defined by the rapid and simultaneous increase of the G-S coefficients, which are calculated from strain increment, giving an earlier warning of failure by about 8%peak stress than those from absolute strain values. Moreover, the process of damage accumulation due to stress-driven crack propagation in Beishan granite is different at various confining pressures as the stress exceeds the crack initiation stress.Concretely, strain localization is continuous until brittle failure at higher confining pressure, while both strain localization and delocalization occur at lower confining pressure.Despite the different stress conditions,a similar statistical characteristic of strain localization during the creep stage is observed. The Gini coefficient increases, and the skewness coefficient decreases slightly as the creep stress is below 95%peak stress. When the accelerated strain localization begins, the Gini and skewness coefficients increase rapidly and simultaneously. 展开更多

In the field of rock engineering, the influence of water is a dynamic process that exhibits varying effects over time and across different locations. To further understand how water influences the mechanical properties and acoustic emission(AE)behavior of rocks, this study conducted uniaxial compression experiments on sandstones with varying degrees of wetting under both natural conditions and water-chemical environments. In addition, the study combined AE equipment with digital image correlation(DIC)to monitor the entire failure process.Using the sliding window algorithm, the variation in the variance of AE characteristic parameters during the process of sandstone loading to failure is analyzed from the perspective of critical slowing down. This analysis enables the effective identification of the early warning signal before failure. The experimental findings suggest that an increase in wetting height results in a gradual decrease in peak stress, accompanied by a concomitant increase in the percentage of shear cracks. The characteristic parameters, including energy, amplitude, and ringing count, all exhibit critical slowing phenomena. The waveform of AE characteristic parameters of the same sample is similar, and the mutation time of the precursor signal is roughly the same. All signals appear in the irreversible plastic deformation stage of microcrack initiation. The integration of critical slowing down theory and the b-value early warning method facilitates a more comprehensive evaluation of the stability of rock mass, thereby significantly enhancing the efficiency and safety of disaster prevention measures. 展开更多

In order to enhance the off-peak performance of gas turbine combined cycle(GTCC)units,a novel collaborative power generation system(CPG)was proposed.During off-peak operation periods, the remaining power of the GTCC was used to drive the adiabatic compressed air energy storage(ACAES),while the intake air of the GTCC was heated by the compression heat of theACAES.Based on a 67.3MW GTCC,under specific demand load distribution,a CPG system and a benchmark system(BS)were designed, both of which used 9.388% of the GTCC output power to drive the ACAES.The performance of the CPG and the BS without intake air heating was compared. The results show that the load rate of the GTCC in the CPG system during off-peak periods is significantly enhanced, and the average operating efficiency of the GTCC is increased by 1.19 percentage points. However,in the BS system, due to the single collaborativemethod of load shifting, the GTCC operative efficiency is almost increased by 1.00 percentage points under different ambient temperatures. In a roundtrip cycle at an ambient temperature of 288.15K,the systemefficiency of the CPG reaches 0.5010,which is 0.62 percentage points higher than the operative efficiency of 0.4948 in the standalone GTCC;while the system efficiency of the BS is slightly inferior to that of the standalone GTCC.The findings confirm the technical feasibility and performance improvement of the ACAES-GTCC collaborative power generation system. 展开更多

Geometrical nonlinearity of the soft soil and the deviation of water flow in the soft clay from Darcy's law have been well recognized in practice. However, the theory of consolidation, which can account for both the geometrical nonlinearity and the non-Darcian flow, has not been reported so far. In this contribution, a model for the consolidation of soft clay which can allow for these two factors simultaneously is proposed. Utilizing the finite difference method, the numerical model for this problem is developed. With the numerical model, the effects of the geometrical nonlinearity and the non-Darcian flow on the consolidation of the soft soil are investigated. The results show that when the self-weight stress is calculated by the same method, the rate of the non-Darcian consolidation for the large-strain case is larger than that for the small-strain case, but the difference between them is limited. However, the difference between the consolidation rates caused by the non-Darcian and Darcian flows is significant. Therefore, when the geometrical nonlinearity of the soft clay is considered in calculating the consolidation settlement, due to the complexity of the large-strain assumption, the small-strain assumption can be used to replace it if the self-weight stress for the small-strain assumption is calculated by considering its sedimentation. However, due to the aforementioned large difference between the consolidation rates with consideration of the non-Darcian flow in soft clay or not, it is better to consider the non-Darcian flow law for both the small and large stain assumptions. 展开更多

This paper presents a semi-analytical method to solve one dimensional consolidation problem by taking consideration of varied compressibility of soil under cyclic loading. In the method, soil stratum is divided equally into n layers while load and consolidation time are also divided into small parts and time intervals accordingly. The problem of one-dimensional consolidation of soil stratum under cyclic loading can then be dealt with at each time interval as one-dimensional linear consolidation of multi-layered soils under constant loading. The compression or rebounding of each soil layer can be judged by the effective stress of the layer. When the effective stress is larger than that in the last time interval, the soil layer is compressed, and when it is smaller, the soil layer rebounds. Thus, appropriate compressibility can be chosen and the consolidation of the layered system can be analyzed by the available analytical linear consolidation theory. Based on the semi-analytical method, a computer program was developed and the behavior of one-dimensional consolidation of soil with varied compressibility under cyclic loading was investigated, and compared with the available consolidation theory which takes no consideration of varied compressibility of soil under cyclic loading. The results showed that by taking the variable compressibility into account, the rate of consolidation of soil was greater than the one predicted by conventional consolidation theory. 展开更多

In this paper,Runge-Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin(RKDG) finite element method is presented to solve the onedimensional inviscid compressible gas dynamic equations in a Lagrangian coordinate. The equations are discretized by the DG method in space and the temporal discretization is accomplished by the total variation diminishing Runge-Kutta method.A limiter based on the characteristic field decomposition is applied to maintain stability and non-oscillatory property of the RKDG method. For multi-medium fluid simulation, the two cells adjacent to the interface are treated differently from other cells. At first,a linear Riemann solver is applied to calculate the numerical ?ux at the interface.Numerical examples show that there is some oscillation in the vicinity of the interface. Then a nonlinear Riemann solver based on the characteristic formulation of the equation and the discontinuity relations is adopted to calculate the numerical ?ux at the interface, which suppresses the oscillation successfully.Several single-medium and multi-medium fluid examples are given to demonstrate the reliability and efficiency of the algorithm. 展开更多

This study investigates the volumetric behaviors of various soils during freeze-thaw(FT)cycles and subsequent one-dimensional(1D)compression from experimental and theoretical studies.Experimental studies were performed on saturated expansive soil specimens with varying compaction conditions and soil structures under different stress states.Experimental results demonstrate that the specimens expand during freezing and contract during thawing. All specimens converge to the same residual void ratio after seven FT cycles, irrespective of their different initial void ratio, stress state, and soil structure. The compression index of the expansive soil specimens increases with the initial void ratio, whereas their swelling index remains nearly constant.A model extending the disturbed state concept(DSC)is proposed to predict the 1D compression behaviors of FT-impacted soils. The model incorporates a parameter,b,to account for the impacts of FT cycles.Empirical equations have been developed to link the key model parameters(i.e.the normalized yield stress and parameter b)to the soil state parameter(i.e.the normalized void ratio)in order to simplify the prediction approach. The proposed model well predicts the results of the tested expansive soil.In addition, the model’s feasibility for other types of soils, including low-and high-plastic clays, and high-plastic organic soils, has been validated using published data from the literature. The proposed model is simple yet reliable for predicting the compression behaviors of soils subjected to FT cycles. 展开更多
