Old-growth forests uniquely support biodiversity while serving as some of the planet's most important carbon stocks.The influence of tree and stand age on carbon flux dynamics remains debated—an urgent question a...Old-growth forests uniquely support biodiversity while serving as some of the planet's most important carbon stocks.The influence of tree and stand age on carbon flux dynamics remains debated—an urgent question as climate-driven disturbances may reshape forest age structures and in situ carbon storage.To clarify these relationships in Fagus sylvatica,systems,we examined a unique dataset of 3,503 tree ring series from 190 plots across some of the best preserved old-growth forests from five southern European countries.By employing a dendrochronological approach and integrating key environmental variables,including elevation,slope,temperature,and the presence of large-diameter trees(≥60 cm),we analyzed the complex relationships between tree/stand age within a plot(represented by plot-level mean values,hereafter“stand age”)and aboveground carbon stock across live,standing,and lying deadwood pools.The average stand age was 220 years,with 230 tC⋅ha^(-1) of carbon stored in aboveground biomass and necromass.We found a positive correlation between age and carbon storage at both the individual tree and plot levels.Notably,the presence of large-diameter trees was the strongest indicator of carbon stock,with carbon accumulation peaking at about 30%large-tree stems proportion before stabilising,while younger beech trees(below 100 years old)had a smaller contribution to carbon storage.We found no evidence of a decline in carbon stock with advancing stand age across the studied sites.Despite the ecological importance of old-growth forests,many of them remain unprotected and are disappearing across Europe.Our findings highlight the importance of preserving old-growth forests to maximize their role as long-term ecosystem carbon reservoirs.展开更多

BACKGROUND Total hip arthroplasty(THA)is an increasingly common treatment for older patients with hip osteoarthritis.Psychological stress is common before THA,although its clinical effects on selected parameters such ...BACKGROUND Total hip arthroplasty(THA)is an increasingly common treatment for older patients with hip osteoarthritis.Psychological stress is common before THA,although its clinical effects on selected parameters such as joint function,quality of life,and postoperative complications remain unclear.AIM To investigate the effects of preoperative psychological stress on selected parameters in older patients who underwent THA.METHODS Ninety older patients who underwent THA between January 2023 and August 2024 were divided into two groups by their preoperative self-rated anxiety scale and self-rated depression scale scores,including high-stress(n=42)and lowstress(n=48).The postoperative joint function,short form-36 health survey(SF36)score,incidence of postoperative complications,and other indicators were compared between the two groups.Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis of the relationship among preoperative psychological stress,quality of life,and postoperative complications was performed.RESULTS Postoperative joint function and quality of life were lower in the high-stress group than they were in the low-stress group(P<0.05).The incidence of postoperative complications was higher in the high-stress group(29.27%)than it was in the low-stress group(9.30%)(P<0.05).Cor-relation analysis revealed that psychological stress was correlated with the Harris hip and SF-36 scores.Total scores on the scale,including physical function,physical pain,general health,mental health,social function,vitality,and emotional function,were negatively correlated(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Preoperative psychological stress results in adverse effects on quality of life and complications in older patients undergoing THA.Therefore,pre-operative psychological interventions should be strengthened to improve postoperative outcomes.展开更多

BACKGROUND Cardiac autonomic neuropathy correlates intimately with cardiovascular complications and unexpected death.It is a typical clinical abnormality seen in coronary artery disease-affected individuals with concu...BACKGROUND Cardiac autonomic neuropathy correlates intimately with cardiovascular complications and unexpected death.It is a typical clinical abnormality seen in coronary artery disease-affected individuals with concurrent type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Moreover,blood glucose(BG)variability has been clinically shown to induce cardiovascular events and sudden death.AIM To investigate how BG variability impacts heart rate(HR)dynamics in older adults with T2DM+coronary heart disease(CHD)and to evaluate the ability of functional myocardial ischemia to predict outcomes in this cohort.METHODS We enrolled 143 older T2DM+CHD patients admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital,Hengyang Medical School,University of South China over a 3.5-year period(January 2018 to July 2021).Using a standard deviation of BG cutoff of 1.4 mmol/L,subjects were stratified into abnormal(n=75)and normal(n=68)fluctuation groups.All patients underwent 72-hour dynamic BG monitoring to detect BG fluctuation parameters.The time domain index of HR variability was measured by dynamic electrocardiogram.To determine how well glucose fluctuation measures predicted functional myocardial ischemia,the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC)was calculated.RESULTS The abnormal fluctuation group showed greater levels of mean amplitude of glycemic excursions(MAGE),mean of daily differences(MODD),largest amplitude of glycemic excursions(LAGE),and mean postprandial glucose excursions(MPPGE)relative to the normal group(P<0.05),along with lower levels of standard deviation of normal-to-normal(NN)interval(SDNN),standard deviation of the average NN interval(SDANN),standard deviation of NN intervals over every 5-minute period(SDNNindex),root mean square of successive differences(rMSSD),and percentage of NN intervals differing by>50 ms(pNN50;P<0.05).Pearson correlation analysis showed that MAGE,MODD,LAGE,and MPPGE were negatively correlated with SDNN,SDANN,SDNNindex,rMSSD,and pNN50 in older patients with T2DM complicated by CHD(P<0.05).The AUC of MAGE combined with MPPGE in predicting the occurrence of functional myocardial ischemia was 0.912,which was significantly higher than 0.694 of SDNN(P<0.05).CONCLUSION A negative correlation was found between BG variability and HR dynamics in older CHD+T2DM patients,and MAGE combined with MPPGE demonstrated better efficacy in predicting functional myocardial ischemia,which deserves clinical attention.展开更多

Objective:To evaluate and analyze the actual efficacy of percutaneous vertebroplasty in the treatment of old unstable osteoporotic spinal fractures.Methods:From March 2023 to March 2024,46 patients with old unstable o...Objective:To evaluate and analyze the actual efficacy of percutaneous vertebroplasty in the treatment of old unstable osteoporotic spinal fractures.Methods:From March 2023 to March 2024,46 patients with old unstable osteoporotic spinal fractures in our hospital were included in this study.They were divided into the conventional group and the observation group based on treatment differences,with 23 patients in each group.The conventional group received conservative drug therapy,while the observation group underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty.The following indicators were compared and analyzed between the two groups:clinical treatment effect and improvement in physical function indicators.Results:The treatment efficiency of the observation group was 95.65%(22/23),while that of the conventional group was 69.57%(16/23).There was a significant difference between the groups,and the treatment effect of the observation group was significantly better(P<0.05).After treatment,the scores of physical status,daily living ability,functional independence,and life obstacles in the observation group were(89.33±4.08),(88.72±4.08),(90.41±2.89),(72.35±3.22),respectively,while those in the conventional group were(68.54±4.21),(67.42±4.11),(73.48±2.75),(72.35±3.22).There was a significant difference between the groups,and the improvement in physical function indicators in the observation group was more pronounced(P<0.05).Conclusion:For patients with old unstable osteoporotic spinal fractures,the basic value of percutaneous vertebroplasty is significant.It can not only improve clinical efficacy and safety but also promote the gradual recovery of patients'physical function indicators.It is recommended for clinical reference and practical application.展开更多

Accelerating the transition from old to new economic drivers(TONED)is fundamental to building a modernized economic system,and the digital economy(DE)has the potential to expedite this process.This study uses panel da...Accelerating the transition from old to new economic drivers(TONED)is fundamental to building a modernized economic system,and the digital economy(DE)has the potential to expedite this process.This study uses panel data that encompassed 273 prefecturelevel cities in China from 2011 to 2020,to empirically examine the effect and underlying mechanisms of the DE on the TONED.The findings indicate that both the DE and TONED exhibit a distinct spatial differentiation,characterized by significantly higher development in the eastern regions compared to the western regions.Furthermore,the robustness test conducted to address the endogeneity problem verifies that DE has a significant positive driving effect on the TONED.In addition,industrial structure upgrading is a significant channel for DE to influence the TONED.Under the constraint of the level of economic development,DE exhibits a non-linear impact on the TONED,and the marginal effect is incremental after passing a specific threshold.Moreover,in the eastern region,non-resource cities,and urban agglomeration areas,DE has a more significant favorable effect on the TONED.The findings provide robust empirical evidence supporting the role of the DE in facilitating the TONED and offer valuable policy insights for developing countries aiming to advance economic transformation.展开更多
Psychophysical experiments on human and animal subjects have proven that aged individuals show significantly reduced visual contrast sensitivity compared with young adults.To uncover the possible neural mechanisms,we ...Psychophysical experiments on human and animal subjects have proven that aged individuals show significantly reduced visual contrast sensitivity compared with young adults.To uncover the possible neural mechanisms,we used extracellular single-unit recording techniques to examine the response of V1（primary visual cortex） neurons as a function of visual stimulus contrast in both old and young adult cats（Felis catus）.The mean contrast sensitivity of V1 neurons to visual stimuli in old cats decreased significantly relative to young adult cats,consistent with findings reported in old primates.These results indicate that aging can affect contrast sensitivity of visual cortical cells in both primate and non-primate mammalian animals,and might contribute to the reduction of perceptual visual contrast sensitivity in aged individuals.Further,V1 cells of old cats exhibited increased responsiveness,decreased signal-to-noise ratio,and enlarged receptive field（RF） size compared with that of young adult cats,which indicated that decreased contrast sensitivity of V1 neurons accompanied a reduction of intracortical inhibition during senescence.展开更多

Previous studies have shown that visual cortical neurons in old mammals exhibit higher spontaneous activity,higher responsiveness to visual stimuli,and lower selectivity for stimulus orientations and motion directions...Previous studies have shown that visual cortical neurons in old mammals exhibit higher spontaneous activity,higher responsiveness to visual stimuli,and lower selectivity for stimulus orientations and motion directions than did neurons in young adult counterparts.However,whether the responsive difference in cortical neurons between young and old animals resulted from different effects induced by anesthetics has remained unclear.To clarify this issue,we recorded the response properties of individual neurons in the primary visual cortex of old and young adult cats while systematically varying the anesthesia level of urethane,a widely used anesthetic in physiology experiments.Our results showed that cumulatively administrating 50 mg and 100 mg of urethane upon the minimal level of urethane required to anesthetize an old or young adult cat did not significantly alter the degree of neuronal response selectivity for stimulus orientations and motion directions nor significantly change the visually-driven response and spontaneous activity of neurons in old and young adult cats.Cumulatively administrating 150 mg of urethane decreased neuronal responsiveness similarly in both age groups.Therefore,urethane appears to exert similar effects on neuronal response properties of old and young adult animals.展开更多

[Method] The ploidy level of 38 roses was examined by the flow cytometry. [Result] The four Chinese old roses that influenced breeding of mod- ern roses were diploid. Since the progenies of these Chinese old roses crossed with the tetraploid European old roses were almost tetraploid, it is probable that the pro- genies were arisen by the unreduced gametes of the Chinese old roses. Other Chi- nese old roses analysed were triploid, it was presumed that triploids and diploids were intermingled in China of the 1700s and the plant hunters preferred the more fertile Chinese old roses to be introduced to Europe. Sixteen hybrids of Chinese old rose originated in China consisted of six diploids, five triploids and five tetraploids. [Conclusion] Although these diploid Chinese roses might be the progeny brought by crossing among only Chinese old roses, it was considered that triploids and tetraploids have been arisen by crossing between European old roses and Chinese old rose.展开更多

文摘BACKGROUND Cardiac autonomic neuropathy correlates intimately with cardiovascular complications and unexpected death.It is a typical clinical abnormality seen in coronary artery disease-affected individuals with concurrent type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Moreover,blood glucose(BG)variability has been clinically shown to induce cardiovascular events and sudden death.AIM To investigate how BG variability impacts heart rate(HR)dynamics in older adults with T2DM+coronary heart disease(CHD)and to evaluate the ability of functional myocardial ischemia to predict outcomes in this cohort.METHODS We enrolled 143 older T2DM+CHD patients admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital,Hengyang Medical School,University of South China over a 3.5-year period(January 2018 to July 2021).Using a standard deviation of BG cutoff of 1.4 mmol/L,subjects were stratified into abnormal(n=75)and normal(n=68)fluctuation groups.All patients underwent 72-hour dynamic BG monitoring to detect BG fluctuation parameters.The time domain index of HR variability was measured by dynamic electrocardiogram.To determine how well glucose fluctuation measures predicted functional myocardial ischemia,the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC)was calculated.RESULTS The abnormal fluctuation group showed greater levels of mean amplitude of glycemic excursions(MAGE),mean of daily differences(MODD),largest amplitude of glycemic excursions(LAGE),and mean postprandial glucose excursions(MPPGE)relative to the normal group(P<0.05),along with lower levels of standard deviation of normal-to-normal(NN)interval(SDNN),standard deviation of the average NN interval(SDANN),standard deviation of NN intervals over every 5-minute period(SDNNindex),root mean square of successive differences(rMSSD),and percentage of NN intervals differing by>50 ms(pNN50;P<0.05).Pearson correlation analysis showed that MAGE,MODD,LAGE,and MPPGE were negatively correlated with SDNN,SDANN,SDNNindex,rMSSD,and pNN50 in older patients with T2DM complicated by CHD(P<0.05).The AUC of MAGE combined with MPPGE in predicting the occurrence of functional myocardial ischemia was 0.912,which was significantly higher than 0.694 of SDNN(P<0.05).CONCLUSION A negative correlation was found between BG variability and HR dynamics in older CHD+T2DM patients,and MAGE combined with MPPGE demonstrated better efficacy in predicting functional myocardial ischemia,which deserves clinical attention.

文摘Objective:To evaluate and analyze the actual efficacy of percutaneous vertebroplasty in the treatment of old unstable osteoporotic spinal fractures.Methods:From March 2023 to March 2024,46 patients with old unstable osteoporotic spinal fractures in our hospital were included in this study.They were divided into the conventional group and the observation group based on treatment differences,with 23 patients in each group.The conventional group received conservative drug therapy,while the observation group underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty.The following indicators were compared and analyzed between the two groups:clinical treatment effect and improvement in physical function indicators.Results:The treatment efficiency of the observation group was 95.65%(22/23),while that of the conventional group was 69.57%(16/23).There was a significant difference between the groups,and the treatment effect of the observation group was significantly better(P<0.05).After treatment,the scores of physical status,daily living ability,functional independence,and life obstacles in the observation group were(89.33±4.08),(88.72±4.08),(90.41±2.89),(72.35±3.22),respectively,while those in the conventional group were(68.54±4.21),(67.42±4.11),(73.48±2.75),(72.35±3.22).There was a significant difference between the groups,and the improvement in physical function indicators in the observation group was more pronounced(P<0.05).Conclusion:For patients with old unstable osteoporotic spinal fractures,the basic value of percutaneous vertebroplasty is significant.It can not only improve clinical efficacy and safety but also promote the gradual recovery of patients'physical function indicators.It is recommended for clinical reference and practical application.

文摘Accelerating the transition from old to new economic drivers(TONED)is fundamental to building a modernized economic system,and the digital economy(DE)has the potential to expedite this process.This study uses panel data that encompassed 273 prefecturelevel cities in China from 2011 to 2020,to empirically examine the effect and underlying mechanisms of the DE on the TONED.The findings indicate that both the DE and TONED exhibit a distinct spatial differentiation,characterized by significantly higher development in the eastern regions compared to the western regions.Furthermore,the robustness test conducted to address the endogeneity problem verifies that DE has a significant positive driving effect on the TONED.In addition,industrial structure upgrading is a significant channel for DE to influence the TONED.Under the constraint of the level of economic development,DE exhibits a non-linear impact on the TONED,and the marginal effect is incremental after passing a specific threshold.Moreover,in the eastern region,non-resource cities,and urban agglomeration areas,DE has a more significant favorable effect on the TONED.The findings provide robust empirical evidence supporting the role of the DE in facilitating the TONED and offer valuable policy insights for developing countries aiming to advance economic transformation.

文摘Psychophysical experiments on human and animal subjects have proven that aged individuals show significantly reduced visual contrast sensitivity compared with young adults.To uncover the possible neural mechanisms,we used extracellular single-unit recording techniques to examine the response of V1（primary visual cortex） neurons as a function of visual stimulus contrast in both old and young adult cats（Felis catus）.The mean contrast sensitivity of V1 neurons to visual stimuli in old cats decreased significantly relative to young adult cats,consistent with findings reported in old primates.These results indicate that aging can affect contrast sensitivity of visual cortical cells in both primate and non-primate mammalian animals,and might contribute to the reduction of perceptual visual contrast sensitivity in aged individuals.Further,V1 cells of old cats exhibited increased responsiveness,decreased signal-to-noise ratio,and enlarged receptive field（RF） size compared with that of young adult cats,which indicated that decreased contrast sensitivity of V1 neurons accompanied a reduction of intracortical inhibition during senescence.

文摘Development of residential areas in China had been divided into three stages, and the paper had pointed out that China now highlighted living but neglected environment. The paper had concluded major existing problems of green lands in residential areas, and based on this, it considered that it was necessary to launch an evaluation on green land system in residential areas. It had analyzed identification of evaluation system indexes and weights, and proposed an evaluation system model. Furthermore, by taking "Hayiji" residential area for example, it had illustrated the application of the evaluation system of green lands in old residential areas in detail. Through evaluation on them, the primary problems of each green land system had been identified, and pertinent reconstruction modes had been proposed, so as to provide reference for reconstruction of green land systems of old residential areas in North China.

文摘Previous studies have shown that visual cortical neurons in old mammals exhibit higher spontaneous activity,higher responsiveness to visual stimuli,and lower selectivity for stimulus orientations and motion directions than did neurons in young adult counterparts.However,whether the responsive difference in cortical neurons between young and old animals resulted from different effects induced by anesthetics has remained unclear.To clarify this issue,we recorded the response properties of individual neurons in the primary visual cortex of old and young adult cats while systematically varying the anesthesia level of urethane,a widely used anesthetic in physiology experiments.Our results showed that cumulatively administrating 50 mg and 100 mg of urethane upon the minimal level of urethane required to anesthetize an old or young adult cat did not significantly alter the degree of neuronal response selectivity for stimulus orientations and motion directions nor significantly change the visually-driven response and spontaneous activity of neurons in old and young adult cats.Cumulatively administrating 150 mg of urethane decreased neuronal responsiveness similarly in both age groups.Therefore,urethane appears to exert similar effects on neuronal response properties of old and young adult animals.

文摘[Objective] This study aimed to analyze the ploidy of Chinese old roses and their progenies. [Method] The ploidy level of 38 roses was examined by the flow cytometry. [Result] The four Chinese old roses that influenced breeding of mod- ern roses were diploid. Since the progenies of these Chinese old roses crossed with the tetraploid European old roses were almost tetraploid, it is probable that the pro- genies were arisen by the unreduced gametes of the Chinese old roses. Other Chi- nese old roses analysed were triploid, it was presumed that triploids and diploids were intermingled in China of the 1700s and the plant hunters preferred the more fertile Chinese old roses to be introduced to Europe. Sixteen hybrids of Chinese old rose originated in China consisted of six diploids, five triploids and five tetraploids. [Conclusion] Although these diploid Chinese roses might be the progeny brought by crossing among only Chinese old roses, it was considered that triploids and tetraploids have been arisen by crossing between European old roses and Chinese old rose.
