Introduction: Apart from its increasingly important frequency, occupational asthma (OA) has become the most important cause of occupational respiratory disorders in developed countries. The number of etiological agents continues to grow following the constant introduction of new harmful substances in industry. Objectives: Determine the prevalence and incidence of OA in our country, the socio-occupational characteristics of asthmatics, and study the forensic and social impact of such pathology. Material and Methods: An exhaustive retrospective epidemiological study was conducted in Tunisia about charts of occupational asthma cases recognized by the competent commissions of the National Medical Care Fund (CNAM) during the period ranging from January 1st 2000 to December 31st 2008. Results: 361 occupational asthma cases, accounting for a prevalence of 7.17% of all occupational diseases, were recognized during the period of the study. Occupational asthma annual incidence was estimated to be 24.42 cases per 1000000 workers. Our study population was mainly women with a sex ratio of 0.86. More than a half (57.6%) of recognized OA cases were working in the textile industry sector. Concerning the asthmatics’ professional career, most of recognized OA cases (n = 225 i.e. 70.6% of cases) kept their jobs, whereas 58 patients did not. The professional career was linked to gender with a job loss that is 1.79 time more important in asthmatic women. Conclusion: The incidence of occupational asthma in Tunisia is comparable with that found in other Mediterranean countries. A rigorous and adequate prevention is necessary and allows reducing the importance of this occupational pathology and its serious consequences. 展开更多

Background and objective: Occupational asthma is responsible for 5 to 20% of adult asthma cases globally, and car painters are among the most at-risk workers. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of car painters with probable occupational asthma in Parakou, Benin. Materials and methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was carried out between April and September 2023 in Parakou, the third most important city in Benin. Results: Overall, 116 workers in 22 car painting shops were included, 64 (55.17%) masters and 52 (44.83%) apprentices. Their mean age was 30.59 (±11.30) years, and their male-female ratio was 28:1. A past history of asthma was reported in 3 (2.59%). There were 113 (97.41%) who used gun spray;49 (42.24%) worked in a confined environment;100 (86.21%) reported breathing discomfort during painting;and 2 (1.72%) used air-filtered masks. The overall prevalence of probable occupational asthma was 10.34% (12/116;95% CI, 6.02 - 17.21), 12.50% (8/64) in masters and 7.69% (4/52) in apprentices (p = 0.398). Preceding occupational rhinitis occurred in 6 (50%). Asthma symptoms were partially controlled in 8 (66.67%) and uncontrolled in one (8.33%). Being a daily smoker (aOR = 4.59;95%CI, 1.01 - 22.00;p = 0.048) was associated with probable occupational asthma, after adjustment for age and permanent residence. Following Peak Expiratory Flow monitoring, four painters provided interpretable records, of whom three were confirmed with occupational asthma based on the Oasys scoring system. Of the 12 with probable occupational asthma, none was followed-up at occupational health departments;3 (25%) were prescribed a short-acting β-2-agonist, and no worker was treated with inhaled corticosteroids. These workers considered the impact of the disease on their productivity at work to be moderate. Conclusion: occupational asthma was common among car painters in Parakou. This calls for raising awareness on this condition, and for actions to improve the prevention and management of the disease among professionals. 展开更多

Background Occupational asthma is a type of asthma caused by exposure to asthma-causing substances in an occupational setting. Its incidence is closely related to the degree of industrial development, but also related to the nature of asthma. In some specific industries, such as workers who are exposed to asthmatic isocyanates for a long time, the incidence of occupational asthma can reach 5%-10%, and the incidence of occupational asthma can even reach 50% or higher among workers engaged in the detergent industry who are in contact with proteolytic enzymes for a long time. Objective To analyze the clinical value of early comprehensive rehabilitation nursing for patients with occupational asthma, methods a total of 48 patients with occupational asthma who were admitted from January 2020 to December 2022 were divided into control group and study group by random number table method The disappearance time of chest tightness and shortness of breath, the disappearance time of wheezing and cough, and the FEV1, forced vital capacity (FVC) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) indexes before and after treatment were compared between the two groups after nursing, the disappearance time of clinical symptoms in the study group was shorter than that in the control group, and the levels of FEV1, FVC and PEF were higher than those in the control group, and the P < 0.05 was significantly improved. 展开更多

Introduction: Work-aggravated asthma is pre-existing or concomitant asthma whose symptoms are aggravated by the work environment. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of this pathology and its associated factors among bakery workers in Abidjan. Materials and Methods: This descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study was conducted over a period of four (4) months from 18 December 2019 to 18 April 2020. Two questionnaires were used, one on employees and the other on the indoor environment of bakeries. In addition, a spirometry test was performed on all bakery workers. Statistical analysis was performed using stata 15.1 software. Results: A total of 599 bakery employees, including bakers (59.73%), sales assistants/ cashiers (23.52%), cleaners (6.34%) and administrative staff (10.18%), were investigated. The mean age was 30.8 ± 8 years, with a sex ratio (M/F) = 2.2. Asthma symptoms were found in 95 (15.86%) employees, of whom 74 (77.9%) had work-related asthma and 11 (14.9%) had asthma aggravated by work. The factors associated with work-aggravated asthma were personal or family history of allergy or atopy [ORa = 3.75;CI95%: 1.56 - 8.93;p = 0.003], exposure to dust [ORa = 5.01;CI95%: 1.43 - 7.50;p = 0.011] and humidity level (60% - 70%) [ORa = 1.80;CI 95%: 0.99 - 3.28;p = 0.05]. Conclusion: Work-aggravated asthma is a reality in bakeries in Abidjan, with an estimated prevalence of 14.9%. Two of the three factors associated with this condition suggest a link with indoor air pollution. Combating air pollution in these establishments must therefore be a priority for the relevant authorities, in order to provide employees with a working environment that protects their health. 展开更多

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs in children and adults. The National Heart,Lung, and Blood Institute(NHLBI)recommends asthma self-management education to be essential in providing patients with the skills necessary to control asthma and improve outcomes.A number of studies have been conducted to assess the effectiveness of these educational programs in children;however, such studies have not demonstrated efficacy in adult populations. This review explores the epidemiology of asthma, the different categories of asthma based on demographic differences, and environmental triggers of asthma. We also discuss common medical options that are available to treat asthma. We then describe the components of an asthma education program and the effectiveness in improving patient outcomes. The literature review was conducted using the National Library of Medicine Pub Med search engine.Comprehensive reviews were focused on the English literature involving human subjects in the last 5 years.Randomized controlled trials were selected for a citation on each subject when available. The Expert Panel Report 3(EPR-3;Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma-Report 2007)was used as the primary reference source for standard of care treatment guidelines.Search terms included asthma, motivational interviewing,irritant-induced asthma, asthma education, home intervention, telemedicine, nitric oxide, asthma action plan, occupational asthma,IgE-mediated asthma, asthma guidelines, asthma prevalence, and asthma treatment. 展开更多
