This study investigates the flexural performance of ultra-high performance concrete(UHPC)in reinforced concrete T-beams,focusing on the effects of interfacial treatments.Three concrete T-beam specimens were fabricated and tested:a control beam(RC-T),a UHPC-reinforced beam with a chiseled interface(UN-C-50F),and a UHPC-reinforced beam featuring both a chiseled interface and anchored steel rebars(UN-CS-50F).The test results indicated that both chiseling and the incorporation of anchored rebars effectively created a synergistic combination between the concrete T-beam and the UHPC reinforcement layer, with the UN-CS-50F exhibiting the highest flexural resistance. The cracking load and ultimate load of UN-CS-50F were 221.5%and 40.8%,respectively,higher than those of the RC-T.Finite element(FE)models were developed to provide further insights into the behavior of the UHPCreinforced T-beams,showing a maximumdeviation of just 8%when validated against experimental data.A parametric analysis varied the height, thickness, andmaterial strength of the UHPC reinforcement layer based on the validated FE model, revealing that increasing the UHPC layer thickness from 30 to 50 mm improved the ultimate resistance by 20%while reducing the UHPC reinforcement height from 440 to 300 mm led to a 10%decrease in bending resistance. The interfacial anchoring rebars significantly reduced crack propagation and enhanced stress redistribution, highlighting the importance of strengthening interfacial bonds and optimizing geometric parameters ofUHPCfor improved T-beam performance. These findings offer valuable insights for the design and retrofitting of UHPC-reinforced bridge girders. 展开更多

The graded density impactor(GDI)dynamic loading technique is crucial for acquiring the dynamic physical property parameters of materials used in weapons. The accuracy and timeliness of GDI structural design are key to achieving controllable stress-strain rate loading. In this study,we have, for the first time, combined one-dimensional fluid computational software with machine learning methods. We first elucidated the mechanisms by which GDI structures control stress and strain rates.Subsequently,we constructed a machine learning model to create a structure-property response surface. The results show that altering the loading velocity and interlayer thickness has a pronounced regulatory effect on stress and strain rates. In contrast, the impedance distribution index and target thickness have less significant effects on stress regulation, although there is a matching relationship between target thickness and interlayer thickness.Compared with traditional design methods, the machine learning approach offers a10^(4)—10^(5)times increase in efficiency and the potential to achieve a global optimum, holding promise for guiding the design of GDI. 展开更多

A suction casting experiment was conducted on Zr_(55)Cu_(30)Al_(10)Ni_(5)(at%)amorphous alloy.Using ProCAST software, numerical simulations were performed to analyze the filling and solidification processes. The velocity field during the filling process and the temperature field during the solidification process of the alloy melt under different process parameters were obtained.Based on the simulation results,a Zr-based amorphous alloy micro-gear was prepared via casting. The results indicate that increasing the suction casting temperature enhances the fluidity of alloy melt but induces unstable flow rate during filling, which is detrimental to complete filling.Zr-based amorphous micro-gears with a module of 0.6 mm,a tooth top diameter of 8 mm,and 10 teeth were prepared through the suction casting.X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry analyses confirm that the fabricated micro-gear exhibits characteristic amorphous structural features, demonstrating well-defined geometrical contours and satisfactory forming completeness. 展开更多

Heat treatment processes, such as annealing and quenching, are crucial in determining residual stress evolution, microstructural changes and mechanical properties of metallic materials, with residual stresses playing a greater role in the performance of components. This paper investigates the effect of heat treatment on residual stresses induced in AISI 1025, manufactured using LENS. Finite element model was developed and simulated to analyze residual stress development. AISI 1025 samples suitable for tool and die applications in Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) filament production, were fabricated using Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) process, followed by heat treatment where annealing and quenching processes were done. The material’s microstructure, residual stress and hardness of heat-treated samples under investigation, were compared against the as-built samples. The results indicated that after annealing, tensile residual stresses were reduced by 93%, resulting in a reduced crack growth rate, compared to the as-built sample, although the hardness was reduced significantly by 25%. On the other hand, high tensile residual stresses of 425 ± 14 MPa were recorded after quenching process with an improvement of hardness by 21%. 展开更多

Rock is geometrically and mechanically multiscale in nature, and the traditional phenomenological laws at the macroscale cannot render a quantitative relationship between microscopic damage of rocks and overall rock structural degradation. This may lead to problems in the evaluation of rock structure stability and safe life.Multiscale numerical modeling is regarded as an effective way to gain insight into factors affecting rock properties from a cross-scale view. This study compiles the history of theoretical developments and numerical techniques related to rock multiscale issues according to different modeling architectures, that is,the homogenization theory, the hierarchical approach, and the concurrent approach. For these approaches, their benefits, drawbacks, and application scope are underlined.Despite the considerable attempts that have been made, some key issues still result in multiple challenges. Therefore, this study points out the perspectives of rock multiscale issues so as to provide a research direction for the future. The review results show that,in addition to numerical techniques, for example,high-performance computing, more attention should be paid to the development of an advanced constitutive model with consideration of fine geometrical descriptions of rock to facilitate solutions to multiscale problems in rock mechanics and rock engineering. 展开更多

In the realm of all-electric aircraft research, the integration of cathode-open proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFC)with lithiumbatteries as a hybrid power source for small to medium-sized unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)has garnered significant attention. The PEMFC,serving as the primary energy supply, markedly extends the UAV’s operational endurance. However, due to payload limitations and spatial constraints in the airframe layout of UAVs,the stack requires customized adaptation. Moreover, the implementation of auxiliary systems to facilitate cold starts of the PEMFC under low-temperature conditions is not feasible.Relying solely on thermal insulation measures also proves inadequate to address the challenges posed by complex low-temperature startup scenarios. To overcomethis, our study leverages the UAV’s lithium battery to heat the cathode inlet airflow, aiding the cathode-open PEMFC cold start process. To validate the feasibility of the proposed air-assisted heating strategy during the conceptual design phase, this study develops a transient,non-isothermal 3Dcathode-open PEMF Cunitmodel incorporating cathode air-assisted heating and gas-ice phase change. The model’s accuracy was verified against experimental cold-start data from a stack composed of identical single cells. This computational framework enables quantitative analysis of temperature fields and ice fraction distributions across domains under varying air-assisted heating powers during cold starts.Building upon this model, the study further investigates the improvement in cold start performance by heating the cathode intake air with varying power levels. The results demonstrate that the fuel cell achieves self-startup at temperatures as low as−13℃ under a constant current density of 100mA/cm^(2) without air-assisted heating. At an ambient temperature of−20℃,a successful start-up can be achieved with a heating power of 0.45 W/cm^(2).The temperature variation overtime during the cold start process can be represented by a sum of two exponential functions. The air-assisted heating scheme proposed in this study has significantly improved the cold start performance of fuel cells in low-temperature environments.Additionally,it provides critical reference data and validation support for component selection and feasibility assessment of hybrid power systems. 展开更多

Numerical modelling is an effective technique to improve the understanding of outburst initiation mechanisms and to take appropriate measures to address their threats.Based on the existing two-way sequential coupling method, two typical types of outbursts,i.e.the gas pocket outburst and the dynamic fracturing outburst, have been successfully simulated using field data from a coalfield in central China. The geological structure commonly observed in the coalfield, known as the‘bedding shear zone’,contributes to the gas pocket outbursts in the region. The model for this type of outburst simulates mininginduced stress and gas pressure distributions during the outburst initiation stage and the subsequent development stage. Both coal ejection and gas release are observed in the model, and the simulation results are consistent with mine site observations,i.e.the amount of ejected coal, outburst cavity profile, and gas release rate change prior to an outburst. The second type of outburst is attributed to gas accumulation and elevated gas pressure due to the gassy floor seam and the heterogeneity in the floor strata, which is explained by the dynamic fracturing theory. While the dynamic coal ejection phenomenon is not captured in the simulation, the abrupt release of retained gas from a floor coal seam is successfully replicated. Both outburst models reveal that abnormal gas emission trends can be used as indicators of an upcoming outburst. The results of this study are expected to provide new insights into the outburst initiation mechanisms and outburst prevention measures. 展开更多

The primary goal of this study is to provide an efficient numerical tool to analyze the seismic performance of nailed walls.Modeling such excavation supports involves complexities due partly to the interaction of support with soil and partly because of the amplification of seismic waves through an excavation wall.Consequently, innovative modeling is suggested herein, incorporating the calibration of the soil constitutive model in a targeted range of stress and strain, and the detection of a natural period of complex systems, including soil and structure, while benefiting from Rayleigh damping to filter unwanted noises. The numerical model was achieved by simulating a previous centrifuge test of the excavation wall, manifested at the pre-failure state.Notably, the calibration of the soil constitutive model through empirical relations, which replaces the numerical reproduction of an element test, more accurately simulated the soil-nail-wall interaction. Two factors were crucial to a successful result.First, probing the natural period of the complicated geometry of the model by applying white noises.Second, considering Rayleigh damping to withdraw unwanted noises and thus assess their permanent effects on the model.Rayleigh damping was applied instead of filtering the obtained results. 展开更多

Steel cylindrical shells are widely used in engineering structures due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, but they are vulnerable to buckling under axial loads. To address this limitation,fiber-reinforced polymer(FRP)composites have emerged as promising materials for structural reinforcement. This study investigates the buckling behavior of steel cylindrical shells reinforced with inner and outer layers of polymer composite materials under axial compression.Using analytical and numerical modeling methods, the critical buckling loads for different reinforcement options were evaluated.Two-sided glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP)or carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP)coatings,as well as combined coatings with layers of different composites, were considered.GFRP+CFRPIn the calculations, the coatings were treated as homogeneous orthotropic materials with equivalent averaged elastic characteristics. The numerical analysis revealed that CFRP reinforcement achieved the highest increase in buckling load, with improvements ranging from 9.84%to 47.29%,depending on the composite thickness and steel shell thickness.GFRP reinforcement, while beneficial, demonstrated a lower effectiveness, with buckling load increases between 5.89%and 19.30%.The hybrid reinforcement provided an optimal balance, improving buckling resistance by GFRP+CFRP6.94%to 43.95%.Statistical analysis further identified composite type and thickness as the most significant factors affecting buckling performance. The findings suggest that CFRP is the preferred reinforcement material, especially when applied to thin-walled cylindrical shells, while hybrid reinforcements can be effectively utilized for structures requiring a balance between stiffness and ductility. These insights provide a foundation for optimizing FRP reinforcement strategies to enhance the structural integrity of steel shells in engineering applications. 展开更多

With different structural forms of ventilation pipes have various attenuation effects on incident shock waves while meeting ventilation requirements. The attenuation mechanism and the propagation law of shock waves in ventilation pipes of different structures are investigated by experiments and numerical simulations.Furthermore, for the same structure, the effects of peak pressure and positive pressure time on the attenuation rate are discussed. It is found that the attenuation rate increases with the incident shock wave pressure, and the shock wave attenuation rate tends to reach its limiting value k for the same structure and reasonably short positive pressure time.Under the same conditions, the attenuation rate is calculated using the pressure of the shock wave as follows:diffusion chamber pipe, branch pipe and selfconsumption pipe;the attenuation rate per unit volume is calculated as follows:self-consumption pipe, branch pipe and diffusion chamber pipe.In addition,an easy method is provided to calculate the attenuation rate of the shock wave in single and multi-stage ventilation pipes.Corresponding parameters are provided for various structures, and the margin of error between the formulae and experimental results is within 10%,which is significant for engineering applications. 展开更多

The local time-stepping(LTS)algorithm is an adaptive method that adjusts the time step by selecting suitable intervals for different regions based on the spatial scale of each cell and water depth and flow velocity between cells. The method can be optimized by calculating the maximum power of two of the global time step increments in the domain, allowing the optimal time step to be approached throughout the grid.To verify the acceleration and accuracy of LTS in storm surge simulations,we developed a model to simulate astronomical storm surges along the southern coast of China. This model employs the shallow water equations as governing equations, numerical discretization using the finite volume method, and fluxes calculated by the Roe solver.By comparing the simulation results of the traditional global time-stepping algorithm with those of the LTS algorithm,we find that the latter fit the measured data better.Taking the calculation results of Typhoon Sally in 1996 as an example,we show that compared with the traditional global time-stepping algorithm, the LTS algorithm reduces computation time by 2.05 h and increases computation efficiency by 2.64 times while maintaining good accuracy. 展开更多

As the integration of electronic components in high-performance servers increases, heat generation significantly impacts performance and raises failure rates. Therefore, heat dissipation has become a critical concern in electronic circuit design. This study uses numerical simulations to investigate the heat dissipation characteristics of electronic components in air-cooled servers.By adjusting airflow speed, heat sink configurations, and the arrangement of straight-fin heat sinks,we optimize heat dissipation performance and analyze the mechanisms at different airflow speeds. The results show that,at the same airflow speed, the temperature of the heat sink is lower than that of the electronic components, creating a temperature gradient that enhances heat transfer.Compared to a front-to-back arrangement of two straight-fin heat sinks, placing the heat sinks parallel to each other results in a lower maximum component temperature and better temperature uniformity.Heat sinks with fins significantly improve heat dissipation. The heat sink with semicylindrical fins on the rib surface provides the best cooling performance. Moreover, compared to natural convection, the maximum temperature of the electronic components decreases by 56.17%and 61%when the incoming flow velocity is 6 m/s with two parallel flat ribbed heat sinks and front-to-back arrangement, respectively. 展开更多

The nozzle is a critical component responsible for generating most of the net thrust in a scramjet engine. The quality of its design directly affects the performance of the entire propulsion system. However, most turbulence models struggle to make accurate predictions for subsonic and supersonic flows in nozzles. In this study,we explored a novel model, the algebraic stress model k-kL-ARSM+J,to enhance the accuracy of turbulence numerical simulations. This new model was used to conduct numerical simulations of the design and off-design performance of a 3D supersonic asymmetric truncated nozzle designed in our laboratory, with the aim of providing a realistic pattern of changes. The research indicates that, compared to linear eddy viscosity turbulence models such as k-kL and shear stress transport(SST),the k-kL-ARSM+J algebraic stress model shows better accuracy in predicting the performance of supersonic nozzles. Its predictions were identical to the experimental values, enabling precise calculations of the nozzle. The performance trends of the nozzle are as follows:as the inlet Mach number increases, both thrust and pitching moment increase, but the rate of increase slows down.Lift peaks near the design Mach number and then rapidly decreases. With increasing inlet pressure, the nozzle thrust, lift, and pitching moment all show linear growth. As the flight altitude rises, the internal flow field within the nozzle remains relatively consistent due to the same supersonic nozzle inlet flow conditions. However, external to the nozzle, the change in external flow pressure results in the nozzle exit transitioning from over-expanded to under-expanded,leading to a shear layer behind the nozzle that initially converges towards the nozzle center and then diverges. 展开更多

Understanding the behaviour of composite marine propellers during operating conditions is a need of the present era since they emerge as a potential replacement for conventional propeller materials such as metals or alloys. They offer several benefits, such as high specific strength, low corrosion, delayed cavitation, improved dynamic stability, reduced noise levels, and overall energy efficiency. In addition, composite materials undergo passive deformation, termed as“bend-twist effect”,under hydrodynamic loads due to their inherent flexibility and anisotropy.Although performance analysis methods were developed in the past for marine propellers, there is a significant lack of literature on composite propellers. This article discusses the recent advancements in experimental and numerical modelling,state-of-the-art computational technologies, and mutated mathematical models that aid in designing, analysing, and optimising composite marine propellers. In the initial sections, performance evaluation methods and challenges with the existing propeller materials are discussed.Thereafter, the benefits of composite propellers are critically reviewed.Numerical and experimental FSI coupling methods, cavitation performance, the effect of stacking sequence, and acoustic measurements are some critical areas discussed in detail.A two-way FSI-coupled simulation was conducted in a non-cavitating regime for four advanced ratios and compared with the literature results. Finally, the scope for future improvements and conclusions are mentioned. 展开更多

The internal and external flow fields during vented explosions of methane were characterized through numerical simulation, and the capability of numerical simulation thereof was validated by previous experimental data at three ignition positions. The venting mechanism was revealed by the simulated concentration distribution, temperature profile, and airflow velocity. The results show rear ignition results in the external methane mass distribution taking the form of"mushroom"and columnar flames in the external space, which can be expressed as a third-order polynomial relationship with distance;central ignition forms a relationship of the form y=AxB.Front ignition causes the temperature to show a tendency to repeated oscillations(rising, falling, and rising).Central ignition generates the maximum vented airflow velocity(V_(max)=320 m/s)upon vent opening. The results indicate that it is acceptable to apply numerical simulation of methane explosions in practice. 展开更多

Hydrogen displays the potential to partially replace pulverized coal injection(PCI)in the blast furnace, and it can reduce CO_(2)emissions.In this paper,a three-dimensional mathematical model of hydrogen and pulverized coal co-injection in blast furnace tuyere was established through numerical simulation, and the effect of hydrogen injection and oxygen enrichment interaction on pulverized coal combustion and raceway smelting was investigated. The simulation results indicate that when the coal injection rate decreased from 36 to 30t/h and the hydrogen injection increased from 0 to 3600 m^(3)/h,the CO_(2)emissions decreased from 1860 to 1551 kg/t,which represents a16.6%reduction,and the pulverized coal burnout decreased from 70.1%to 63.7%.The heat released from hydrogen combustion can not only promote the volatilization of pulverized coal but also affect the combustion reaction between volatilization and oxygen, which resulted in a decrease in the temperature at the end of the raceway.Co-injection of hydrogen with PCI increased the wall temperature near the upper half part of the raceway and at the outlet of the tuyere, which required a high cooling efficiency to extend the service life of the blast furnace. The increase in oxygen level compensated for the decreased average temperature in the raceway due to hydrogen injection. The increase in the oxygen content by 3%while maintaining constant hydrogen and PCI injection rates increased the burnout and average raceway temperature by 4.2%and 43 K,respectively. The mole fraction of CO and H_(2) production increased by 0.04 and 0.02,respectively.Burnout can be improved through optimization of the particle size distribution of pulverized coal. 展开更多

With the increasing development of deepburied engineering projects, rockburst disasters have become a frequent concern.Studies have indicated that tunnel diameter is a critical factor influencing the occurrence of rockbursts. To investigate the influence of tunnel diameter on the deformation and failure characteristics of surrounding rock,large-sized rocklike gypsum specimens were tested using a selfdeveloped true triaxial rockburst loading system containing circular tunnels with three different diameters(D=0.07 m,0.11 m,and 0.15 m).Acoustic emission monitoring, together with a miniature intelligent camera, was employed to analyze the entire process, focusing on macroscopic failure patterns, fragment characteristics, and underlying failure mechanisms. In addition, theoretical analyses were carried out and combined with numerical simulations to investigate the differences in energy evolution associated with rockburst physical models. The results indicate that:(1)The rockburst process with different tunnel diameters consistently evolved through three distinct stages—initial particle ejection, crack propagation accompanied by flake spalling, and, finally, fragment ejection leading to the formation of a‘V'-shaped notch.(2)Increasing tunnel diameter reduces rockburst failure load while increasing surrounding rock damage extent, total mass and average size of ejected fragments.Additionally, shear failure proportion decreases with tensile failure becoming increasingly dominant.(3)Larger tunnel diameters reduce the attenuation rate of elastic strain energy, thereby expanding the zone of elastic strain energy accumulation and disturbance and creating conditions for larger volume rockburst.(4)Larger tunnel diameters result in a smaller principal stress ratio at equivalent distances in the surrounding rock, indicating a higher likelihood of tensile failure.(5)Numerical analyses further reveal that larger tunnel diameters reduce the maximum elastic strain energy density around the tunnel, lowering the energy released per unit volume of rockburst fragments and their ejection velocities. However, both the total failure volume and overall energy release from rockburst increase.Model experiments with different tunnel diameters are of great significance for optimizing engineering design and parameter selection,as well as guiding tunnel construction under complex geological conditions. 展开更多

The seepage of groundwater and the strain-softening of rock mass in a submarine tunnel expand the plastic region of rock, thereby affecting its overall stability. It is therefore essential to study the stress and strain fields in the rocks surrounding the submarine tunnel by considering the coupled effect of strainsoftening and seepage. However, the evolution equation for the hydro-mechanical parameters in the existing fully coupled solution is a uniform equation that is unable to reproduce the characteristics of rock mass in practice. In this study,an updated numerical procedure for the submarine tunnel is derived by coupling strain-softening and seepage effect based on the experimental results.According to the hydro-mechanical coupling theory, the hydro-mechanical parameters such as elastic modulus,Poisson's ratio,Biot's coefficient and permeability coefficient of rocks are characterized by the fitting equations derived from the experimental data. Then, the updated numerical procedure is deduced with the governing equations, boundary conditions, seepage equations and fitting equations. The updated numerical procedure is verified accurately compared with the previous analytical solution.By utilizing the updated numerical procedure, the characteristics of stress field and the influences of initial pore water pressure,Biot's coefficient, and permeability coefficient on the stress, displacement and water-inflow of the surrounding rocks are discussed.Regardless of the variations in hydro-mechanical parameters, the stress distribution has a similar trend. The initial permeability coefficient exerts the most significant influence on the stress field. With the increases in initial pore water pressure and Biot's coefficient, the plastic region expands, and the water-inflow and displacement increase accordingly.Given the fact that the stability of the tunnel is more sensitive to the seepage force controlled by the hydraulic parameters,it is suggested to dewater the ground above the submarine tunnel to control the initial pore water pressure. 展开更多

Open channel confluences, where two streams or rivers converge, play a crucial role in hydraulic engineering and river dynamics. These confluences are characterized by complex hydrodynamics influenced by the discharge ratios of merging water bodies. This study investigated the mixing structure at open channel confluences using three-dimensional numerical modeling.A comprehensive three-dimensional numerical model was developed and validated against a dataset obtained from controlled laboratory experiments. This dataset incorporated three-dimensional time-averaged velocity measurements. The skew-induced and stress-induced equation systems were adopted as the core governing equations, providing a framework for simulating various scenarios.A total of ten different cases were analyzed. The results highlighted the effect of discharge ratios on turbulence, lateral and vertical vorticities, and the distribution of mixing, which intensified with higher magnitudes of discharge ratios. The mixing structure, driven by velocity gradients and vorticity, revealed the significant role of lateral and vertical vorticities in determining hydrodynamic behaviors and mixing distributions at confluences.Specifically, the momentum ratio of incoming flows governed the spatial evolution of mixing processes. This study revealed that the distribution of mixing served as a key indicator for identifying the formation of mid-channel scours.High normalized velocities induced toward the left bank led to the superelevation of the water surface, enhancing the potential for bed material and the formation of significant scour holes beneath the elevated water surface. This novel approach provides a deeper understanding of the mixing patterns at confluences, particularly in scenarios with equilibrated discharge ratios but in different magnitudes. 展开更多
