BACKGROUND One of the main characteristics of oral squamous cell carcinoma(OSCC)is that it metastasizes to cervical lymph nodes frequently with a high degree of local invasiveness.A primary feature of malignant tumors...BACKGROUND One of the main characteristics of oral squamous cell carcinoma(OSCC)is that it metastasizes to cervical lymph nodes frequently with a high degree of local invasiveness.A primary feature of malignant tumors is their penetration of neighboring tissues,such as lymphatic and blood arteries,due to the tumor cells'capacity to break down the extracellular matrix(ECM).Matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs)constitute a family of proteolytic enzymes that facilitate tissue remodeling and the degradation of the ECM.MMP-9 and MMP-13 belong to the group of extracellular matrix degrading enzymes and their expression has been studied in OSCC because of their specific functions.MMP-13,a collagenase family member,is thought to play an essential role in the MMP activation cascade by breaking down the fibrillar collagens,whereas MMP-9 is thought to accelerate the growth of tumors.Elevated MMP-13 expression has been associated with tumor behavior and patient prognosis in a number of malignant cases.AIM To assess the immunohistochemical expression of MMP-9 and MMP-13 in OSCC.METHODS A total of 40 cases with histologically confirmed OSCC by incisional biopsy were included in this cross-sectional retrospective study.The protocols for both MMP-9 and MMP-13 immunohistochemical staining were performed according to the manufacturer’s recommendations along with the normal gingival epithelium as a positive control.All the observations were recorded and Pearson’sχ²test with Fisher exact test was used for statistical analysis.RESULTS Our study showed no significant correlation between MMP-9 and MMP-13 staining intensity and tumor size.The majority of the patients were in advanced TNM stages(III and IV),and showed intense expression of MMP-9 and MMP-13.CONCLUSION The present study suggests that both MMP-9 and MMP-13 play an important and independent role in OSCC progression and invasiveness.Intense expression of MMP-9 and MMP-13,irrespective of histological grade of OSCC,correlates well with TNM stage.Consequently,it is evident that MMP-9 and MMP-13 are important for the invasiveness and progression of tumors.The findings may facilitate the development of new approaches for evaluating lymph node metastases and interventional therapy techniques,hence enhancing the prognosis of patients diagnosed with OSCC.展开更多
BACKGROUND The most important consideration in determining treatment strategies for undifferentiated early gastric cancer(UEGC)is the risk of lymph node metastasis(LNM).Therefore,identifying a potential biomarker that...BACKGROUND The most important consideration in determining treatment strategies for undifferentiated early gastric cancer(UEGC)is the risk of lymph node metastasis(LNM).Therefore,identifying a potential biomarker that predicts LNM is quite useful in determining treatment.AIM To develop a machine learning(ML)-based integral procedure to construct the LNM gray-level co-occurrence matrix(GLCM)prediction model.METHODS We retrospectively selected 526 cases of UEGC confirmed through pathological examination after radical gastrectomy without endoscopic treatment in four tertiary hospitals between January 2015 to December 2021.We extracted GLCM-based features from grayscale images and applied ML to the classification of candidate predictive variables.The robustness and clinical utility of each model were evaluated based on the following factors:Receiver operating characteristic curve(ROC),decision curve analysis,and clinical impact curve.RESULTS GLCM-based feature extraction significantly correlated with LNM.The top 7 GLCM-based factors included inertia value 0°(IV_0),inertia value 45°(IV_45),inverse gap 0°(IG_0),inverse gap 45°(IG_45),inverse gap full angle(IG_all),Haralick 30°(Haralick_30),Haralick full angle(Haralick_all),and Entropy.The areas under the ROC curve(AUCs)of the random forest classifier(RFC)model,support vector machine,eXtreme gradient boosting,artificial neural network,and decision tree ranged from 0.805[95%confidence interval(CI):0.258-1.352]to 0.925(95%CI:0.378-1.472)in the training set and from 0.794(95%CI:0.237-1.351)to 0.912(95%CI:0.355-1.469)in the testing set,respectively.The RFC(training set:AUC:0.925,95%CI:0.378-1.472;testing set:AUC:0.912,95%CI:0.355-1.469)model that incorporates Entropy,Haralick_all,Haralick_30,IG_all,IG_45,IG_0,and IV_45 had the highest predictive accuracy.CONCLUSION The evaluation results indicate that the method of selecting radiological and textural features becomes more effective in the LNM discrimination against UEGC patients.Additionally,the MLbased prediction model developed using the RFC can be used to derive treatment options and identify LNM,which can hence improve clinical outcomes.展开更多

To explore the role of the matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) polymorphism in colorectal cancer (CRC) in a northeast Chinese population.METHODS: Genotyping of MNP-9-1562C〉T and 279R〉Q polymorphisms was carried out on blood samples from 137 colorectal cancer patients and 199 controls using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Multivariate logistic regression models were used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).RESULTS: The distribution of IVllVlP-9 -2562C〉T and 279 R〉Q genotype was not significantly associated with the risk of CRC. However, the risk of Ilymph node metastasis of CRC was increased in patients with the -1562T allele (OR = 2.601; 95% CI = 1.160-5.835; P = 0.022). The frequency of MMP-9 279RR + RQ genotype was higher than the QQ genotype among CRC patients younger than sixty years old (OR = 0.102, 95% CI = 0.013-0.812; P = 0.012).CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that the MMP-9- 1562C〉T polymorphism affects lymph node metastasis of CRC. In addition, the MMP-9 279R allele may lead to a younger age of onset of colorectal cancer.展开更多

Particularly, when the mesh is over dense, the iterative solution of the matrix equation from edge element converges very slowly. Based on the node element and edge element, a node-edge element is presented, which has no spurious solutions and better-conditioned matrix. In order to discover the probability distribution feature of edge in aviation network adjacent matrix of China and on the basis of this feature to establish an algorithm of searching non-overlap community structure in...In order to discover the probability distribution feature of edge in aviation network adjacent matrix of China and on the basis of this feature to establish an algorithm of searching non-overlap community structure in network to reveal the inner principle of complex network with the feature of small world in aspect of adjacent matrix and community structure,aviation network adjacent matrix of China was transformed according to the node rank and the matrix was arranged on the basis of ascending node rank with the center point as original point.Adjacent probability from the original point to extension around in approximate area was calculated.Through fitting probability distribution curve,power function of probability distribution of edge in adjacent matrix arranged by ascending node rank was found.According to the feature of adjacent probability distribution,deleting step by step with node rank ascending algorithm was set up to search non-overlap community structure in network and the flow chart of algorithm was given.A non-overlap community structure with 10 different scale communities in aviation network of China was found by the computer program written on the basis of this algorithm.展开更多
