Impact of submicron TiB_(2) particles on microstructure,casting performance,and mechanical properties of an Al-Cu alloy

Although the strengthening and grain refinement effects of TiB_(2) particles on aluminum alloys have been extensively studied,their influence on casting behavior remains relatively underexplored.In this study,the influence of different addition amounts of submicron TiB_(2) particles on the microstructure,casting performance,and mechanical properties of an Al-Cu(ZL205A)alloy was systematically investigated.The introduction of TiB_(2) particles leads to significant grain refinement,transforming the microstructure from coarse grains to fine equiaxed grains by providing additional nucleation sites and inhibiting grain growth.SEM and TEM analyses reveal that the added submicron TiB_(2) particles exhibit minimal effect on the distribution of intermetallic phases or precipitates.Casting performance,as evaluated by spiral fluidity and hot tearing tests,shows notable improvements with TiB_(2) additions.At a TiB_(2) content of 3wt.%,the fluidity length increases by 20%,and the hot tearing susceptibility coefficient decreases by 29%.These enhancements are mainly due to the refined grain structure and the formation of interdendritic bridging in TiB_(2)-reinforced alloys.However,the overall enahncement in casting properties shows little variation across the TiB_(2) additions from 0.2wt.% to 3wt.%.Mechanical testing shows that the highest hardness and strength are achieved with a 1wt.%addition of TiB_(2) particles,primarily attributed to refined grain size and reinforcement of the aluminum matrix.Based on these findings,a TiB_(2) particle content of 1wt.%is recommended for optimizing both the casting performance and mechanical properties of the ZL205A alloy. 展开更多

Silicon(Si)is an inevitable impurity element in the AZ31 alloy.In this study,the Si impurity was detected mainly as fine Mg_(2)Si particles dispersed widely within the central region of the Mg_(17)Al_(12) phase.During the solidification process,the Mg_(2)Si particle precipitates at about 565℃,before the Mg_(17)Al_(12) phase of 186℃,potentially acting as the heterogeneous nucleation core for the Mg_(17)Al_(12) phase.The orientation relationship between Mg_(2)Si and Mg_(17)Al_(12) was investigated using the Edge-to-Edge matching model(E2EM)calculations,which showed a misfit of only 0.1%.This low misfit suggests that Mg_(2)Si can serve as a heterogeneous nucleation site for Mg_(17)Al_(12).The surface and interface structures of Mg_(2)Si(220)and Mg_(17)Al_(12)(332)were constructed,and then investigated through the first-principles calculation.The theoretical results indicate that Mg and Al are easily adsorbed on the surface of Mg_(2)Si,with Al showing higher adsorption energy than Mg.Furthermore,the interface between Mg_(2)Si and Mg_(17)Al_(12) exhibits favorable thermodynamic stability.Combined with experiments and theoretical calculations,it is confirmed that the Mg_(2)Si particles,formed due to the Si impurity,provide effective heterogeneous nucleation sites for the Mg_(17)Al_(12) phase. 展开更多

The Ni-based alloy composite coatings reinforced by nanostructured Al2O3-40%TiO2 multiphase ceramic particles were prepared on the surface of 7005 aluminum alloy by plasma spray technology. The microstructure and tribological properties of the composite coatings were researched. The results show that the composite coatings mainly consist of γ-Ni, α-Al2O3, γ-Al2O3 and rutile-TiO2 etc, and exhibit lower friction coefficients and wear losses than the Ni-based alloy coatings at different loads and speeds. The composite coating bears low contact stress at 3 N and its wear mechanism is micro-cutting wear. As loads increase to 6-12 N, the contact stress is higher than the elastic limit stress of worn surface, and the wear mechanisms change into multi-plastic deformation wear, micro-brittle fracture wear and abrasive wear. With the increase of speeds, the contact temperature of worn surface increases. The composite coating experiences multi-plastic deformation wear, fatigue wear and adhesive wear. 展开更多

SnO2 nano particles with various Pd-doping concentrations were prepared using a template-free hydrothermal method.The effects of Pd doping on the crystal structure,morphology,microstructure,thermal stability and surface chemistry of these nano particles were characterized by transmission electron microscope,X-ray diffractometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope respectively.It was observed that Pd-doping had little effect on the grain sizes of the obtained SnO2 nano particles during the hydrothermal route.During thermal annealing,Pd-doping could restrain the growth of grain sizes below 500℃ while the grain growth was promoted when the temperature increased to above 700℃.XPS results revealed that Pd existed in three chemical states in the as-synthesized sample as Pd^0,Pd^2+ and Pd^4+,respectively.Pd^4+ was the main state which was responsible for improving the gas-sensing property.The optimal Pd-doping concentration for better gas-sensing property and thermal stability was 2.0%-2.5% (mole fraction). 展开更多

Wedge-shaped copper casting experiment was conducted to study the engulfment behavior of TiB2 particle and the interaction between particle or cluster and the solid/liquid front in commercial pure aluminum matrix. The experimental results show that the particle size distribution obeys two separate systems in the whole wedge-cast sample. Furthermore, it is found that the big clusters are pushed to the center of the wedge shaped sample and the single particle or small clusters consisting of few particles are engulfed into the α-Al in the area of the sample edge. The cluster degree of particles varies in different areas, and its value is 0.2 and 0.6 for the cluster fraction in the edge and in the center of the wedge sample, respectively. The cluster diameter does not obey the normal distribution but approximately obeys lognormal distribution in the present work. More importantly, in the whole sample, the particle size obeys two separate log-normal distributions. 展开更多

Two kinds of Al based functionally gradient composite tubes reinforced by primary Si particles alone and primary Si/in situ Mg2Si particles jointly were successfully prepared by centrifugal casting,and their structural and mechanical characters were compared.It is found that the composite reinforced with primary Si particles takes a characteristic of particles distribution both in the inner and outer layers.However,composite reinforced with primary Si/Mg2Si particles jointly takes a characteristic of particles distribution only in the inner layer and shows a sudden change of particles distribution across the section of inner and outer layers.The hardness and wear resistance of Al-19Si-5Mg tube in the inner layer are greatly higher than that in the other layers of Al-19Si-5Mg tube and Al-19Si tube.Theoretical analysis reveals that the existence of Mg2Si particles is the key factor to form this sudden change of gradient distribution of two kinds of particles.Because Mg2Si particles with a lower density have a higher centripetal moving velocity than primary Si particles,in a field of centrifugal force,they would collide with primary Si particles and then impel the later to move together forward to the inner layer of the tube. 展开更多

The preparation parameters and pigment properties of B/TCP as well as the interaction mechanism between barite and TiO2 were studied. The results indicated that the mechanical co-grinding process and the proportion of TiO2 affected the properties of B/TCP significantly. B/TCP prepared under optimal conditions was similar to TiO2 in pigment properties. It was mainly the strong electrostatic attraction between barite and TiO2 in water that combined them firmly and then formed B/TCP. 展开更多

The coarsening behavior of(Ni,Co)2Si particles in Cu-Ni-Co-Si alloy was investigated by experimental observations and coarsening kinetics calculations when aged at 450,500,550 and 600℃ for different durations.The results show that the critical particle radius for coherence mismatch is found to be 10.3 nm,and particles larger than 25 nm are generally semi-coherent.The relationship of(Ni,Co)2Si particles size and aging time follows Lifshitz,Slyosov and Wagner(LSW) theory.The particle size distributions fit well to the LSW theoretical distribution.The activation energy for(Ni,Co)2Si coarsening is accurately determined to be(216.21 ± 5.18)kJ mol-1 when considering the effect of temperature on the solution concentrations in matrix.The coarsening of(Ni,Co)2Si particles in Cu-Ni-Co-Si alloy is controlled by diffusion of Ni,Co and Si in Cu matrix.The growth of particles for long durations suggests that vacancies can be trapped within the structure for long time despite their mobility. 展开更多

In-situ ceramics particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites are favored in the aerospace industry due to excellent properties.However,the hard ceramic particles as the reinforcement phase bring challenges to machining.To study the effect of in-situ TiB_(2)particles on machinability and surface integrity of TiB_(2)/2024 composite and TiB_(2)/7075 composite,milling experiments were performed,and compared with conventional 2024 and 7075 aluminum alloys.In-situ TiB_(2)particles clustered at the grain boundaries and dispersed inside the matrix alloy grains hinder the dislocation movement of the matrix alloy.Therefore,the milling force and temperature of the composites are higher than those of the aluminum alloys due to the increase of the strength and the decrease of the plasticity.In the milling of composites,abrasive wear is the main wear form of carbide tools,due to the scratching of hard nano-TiB_(2)particles.The composites containing in-situ TiB_(2)particles have machining defects such as smearing,micro-scratches,micro-pits and tail on the machined surface.However,in-situ TiB_(2)particles impede the plastic deformation of the composites,which greatly reduces cutting edge marks on the machined surface.Therefore,under the same milling parameters,the surface roughness of TiB_(2)/2024 composite and TiB_(2)/7075 composite is much less than that of2024 and 7075 aluminum alloy respectively.Under the milling conditions of this experiment,the machined subsurface has no metamorphic layer,and the microhardness of the machined surface is almost the same as that of the material.Besides,compared with 2024 and 7075 aluminum alloy,machined surfaces of TiB_(2)/2024 composite and TiB_(2)/7075 composite both show tensile residual stress or low magnitude of compressive residual stress. 展开更多

Nano-AlN and submicron-Al_(2)O_(3) particles were simultaneously utilized in a 6061 Al matrix composite to improve the high-temperature strength.According to the SEM and TEM characterization,nano-AlN and submicron-Al_(2)O_(3) particles are uniformly distributed in the Al matrix.Brinell hardness results indicate that different from the traditional 6061 Al matrix alloy,the aging kinetics of the composite is obviously accelerated by the reinforcement particles.The T6-treated composite exhibits excellent tensile properties at both room temperature and elevated temperature.Especially at 350℃,the T6-treated composite not only has a high yield strength of 121 MPa and ultimate tensile strength of 128 MPa,but also exhibits a large elongation of 11.6%.Different strengthening mechanisms of nano-AlN and submicron-Al_(2)O_(3) particles were also discussed in detail. 展开更多

Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 solid solution ultrafine particle was prepared in the cyclohexane/water/OP-10/n-hexanol reversed microemulsion. The quasi-ternary phase diagram investigations showed that the system has narrow W/O type microemulison region, so it is the proper system to prepare Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 solid solution ultrafine particle. Some physical-chemical techniques such as TG/DTA, XRD, BET, and HRTEM are used to characterize the resultant powders. The results show that the fluorite cubic Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 solid solution is obtained at 400 ℃. The surface area is (146.7 m^2·g^-1), which is higher than the surface area for sol-gel prepared sample (59.5m^2·g^-1). HRTEM images indicated that the Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 solid solution ultrafine particle is well-crystallized, narrow size distribution, less agglomeration, within mean size of 5 -7 nm. 展开更多

In this work,two wrought Mg-3.66Al-4.25Ca-0.43 Mn(wt%)alloys with different morphology and distribution of Mg_(2)Ca particles were fabricated by hot extrusion and multi-pass(32)equal channel angular pressing(ECAP).The as-extruded alloy exhibits a banded microstructure with alternately arranged Mg_(2)Ca particle bands,fine α-Mg dynamically recrystallized(DRX)grain bands,and coarse α-Mg deformed grain bands.The Mg_(2)Ca bands are composed of broken Mg_(2)Ca particles which are aggregated and aligned along extrusion direction.The microstructure of ECAP alloy contains complete α-Mg DRX grains and refined Mg_(2)Ca particles which are dispersedly distributed at grain boundaries.Tensile test results show that the as-extruded alloy possesses high ultimate tensile strength(UTS)of 420 MPa and poor fracture elongation of 7%,while the ECAP alloy exhibits improved toughness with UTS of 347 MPa and fraction elongation of 16%.The higher strength of as-extruded alloy is mainly ascribed to the contribution of coarse deformed grains with strong texture,and its poor toughness is resulted from the formation of Mg_(2)Ca bands within which microcracks could form and extend rapidly.On the contrary,the refined and dispersedly distributed Mg_(2)Ca particles are effective to retard crack initiation and impede crack propagation,thereby enhancing the toughness of ECAP alloy significantly. 展开更多

In situ formed TiB2 particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites (TiB2/Al MMCs) have some extraordinary properties which make them be a promising material for high performance aero-engine blade. Due to the influence of TiB2 particles, the machinability is still a problem which restricts the application of TiB2/Al MMCs. In order to meet the industrial requirements, the influence of TiB2 particles on the machinability of TiB2/Al MMCs was investigated experimentally. Moreover, the optimal machining conditions for this kind of MMCs were investigated in this study. The major conclusions are: (1) the machining force of TiB2/Al MMCs is bigger than that of non- reinforced alloy and mainly controlled by feed rate; (2) the residual stress of TiB2/AI MMCs is compressive while that of non-reinforced alloy is nearly neutral; (3) the surface roughness of TiB2/Al MMCs is smaller than that of non-reinforced alloy under the same cutting speed, but reverse result was observed when the feed rate increased; (4) a multi-objective optimization model for surface roughness and material removal rate (MRR) was established, and a set of optimal parameter combinations of the machining was obtained. The results show a great difference from SiC particle reinforced MMCs and provide a useful guide for a better control of machining process of this material. 展开更多

Corona Virus Disease 2019(COVID-19)caused by the novel coronavirus,results in an acute respiratory condition coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)and is highly infectious.The recent spread of this virus has caused a global pandemic.Currently,the transmission routes of SARS-CoV-2 are being established,especially the role of environmental transmission.Here we review the environmental transmission routes and persistence of SARS-CoV-2.Recent studies have established that the transmission of this virus may occur,amongst others,in the air,water,soil,cold-chain,biota,and surface contact.It has also been found that the survival potential of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is dependent on different environmental conditions and pollution.Potentially important pathways include aerosol and fecal matter.Particulate matter may also be a carrier for SARS-CoV-2.Since microscopic particles can be easily absorbed by humans,more attention must be focused on the dissemination of these particles.These considerations are required to evolve a theoretical platform for epidemic control and to minimize the global threat from future epidemics. 展开更多

An organic-inorganic composite dip-coating method was adopted in order to obtain ideal water repellent cotton fabrics. To be specific, a dual-functional coating with both superhydrophobic and luminescent properties was prepared on cotton fabric by using a dip-coating solution comprising (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS) modified SrA1204:Eu2+,Dy3+particles, SU8, and fluorinated alkyl silane (FAS). The micro/nano-scale roughness generated by SrA1204:Eu2+,Dy3+ particles, together with low-sur- face-energy FAS, rendered the cotton fabric superhydrophobic with a water contact angle of about 160° and a sliding angle as small as 2°. The coated fabric could withstand at least 100 cycles of standard laundry. The emission spectra of the coated fabric showed two emission peaks at 440 and 520 nm, which belonged to the blue and yellow-green color areas, respectively. The afterglow duration of the coated fabric was mainly influenced by the different depths of the trap levels in the SrA1204:Eu2+,Dy3+. 展开更多

Bulk Cu-Ti alloy reinforced by TiB2 nano particles was prepared using in-situ reaction between Cu 3.4%Ti and Cu-0.7%B master alloys along with rapid solidification and subsequent heat treatment for 1-10 h at 900 ℃. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) characterization showed that primary TiB2 nano particles and TiB whiskers were formed by in-situ reaction between Ti and B in the liquid copper. The formation of TiB whiskers within the melt led to coarsening of TiB2 particles. Primary TiB2 particles were dispersed along the grain boundaries and hindered grain growth at high temperature, while the secondary TiB2 particles were formed during heat treatment of the alloy by diffusion reaction of solute titanium and boron inside the grains. Electrical conductivity and hardness of the composite were evaluated during heat treatment. The results indicated that the formation of secondary TiB2 particles in the matrix caused a delay in hardness reduction at high temperature. The electrical conductivity and hardness increased up to 8 h of heat treatment and reached 33.5% IACS and HV 158, respectively. 展开更多

Newcastle disease virus(NDV)and H9N2 subtype Avian influenza virus(AIV)are two notorious avian respiratory pathogens that cause great losses in the poultry industry.Current inactivated commercial vaccines against NDV and AIV have the disadvantages of inadequate mucosal responses,while an attenuated live vaccine bears the risk of mutation.Dendritic cell(DC)targeting strategies are attractive for their potent mucosal and adaptive immune-stimulating ability against respiratory pathogens.In this study,DC-binding peptide(DCpep)-decorated chimeric virus-like particles(cVLPs),containing NDV haemagglutinin–neuraminidase(HN)and AIV haemagglutinin(HA),were developed as a DC-targeting mucosal vaccine candidate.DCpep-decorated cVLPs activated DCs in vitro,and induced potent immune stimulation in chickens,with enhanced secretory immunoglobulin A(sIgA)secretion and splenic T cell differentiation.40μg cVLPs can provide full protection against the challenge with homologous,heterologous NDV strains,and AIV H9N2.In addition,DCpep-decorated cVLPs could induce a better immune response when administered intranasally than intramuscularly,as indicated by robust s IgA secretion and a reduced virus shedding period.Taken together,this chimericVLPs are a promising vaccine candidate to control NDV and AIV H9N2 and a useful platform bearing multivalent antigens. 展开更多

As the oxidant is switched from conventional air to CO2/O2/N2 mixture, the key species C2H2, C3H3 responsible for formation of first aromatic ring, the apical aromatics and 4zring aromatics total production rate all decrease greatly. In addition, with CO2 mole fraction from 0.2 to 0.5 in the mixture, the soot particle number density, volume fraction, surface area density, which are three most important parameters to soot oarticle orooertv, are suooressed obviously. Furthermore, the increasing content of C02 in the oxidizer influences mostly H, OH radical concentrations by two reactins CO + OH == CO2+ H and H + O2===O+ OH, and the procluction rate ofvo reactions declined, which revealed that C02 in mixture has an inhibiting ef- fect on soot particle generation. 展开更多

In the present work,the dispersion casting of Y-2O-3 particles in aluminum-copper alloy was investigated in terms of microstructural changes with respect to Cu contents of 20 (hypo),33 (eutectic) and 40 (hyper) wt pct by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).For the fabrication of Al-Cu alloy dispersed Y-2O-3 ceramic particles,stir casting method was employed.In case of Al-20 wt pct Cu alloy (hypoeutectic),SEM images revealed that primary Al was grown up in the beginning.After that,eutectic phase with well dispersed ceramic particles was formed.In case of eutectic composition,Y-2O-3 particles were uniformly dispersed in the matrix.When the Cu is added into Al up to 40 wt pct (hypereutectic),primary phase was grown up without any Y-2O-3 ceramic particles in the early stage of solidification.Thereafter, eutectic phase was formed with well dispersed ceramic particles.It can be concluded that Y-2O-3 ceramic particles is mostly dispersed in case of eutectic composition in Al-Cu alloy. 展开更多
