Cotton rose(Hibiscus mutabilis)is a well-known ornamental plant that produces large flowers of vibrant colors.However,metabolites in H.mutabilis flowers with vibrant color have not been fully understood.By performing a combined analysis of metabolomics and transcriptomics data,we here explored mechanisms for the production of primary active compounds in this plant.Multivariate statistics unveiled differences in flavonoid metabolism between white and pink flowers,with pink flowers exhibiting a greater flavonoid abundance.The white-to-pink transition of cotton rose flowers may be attributed to pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside formation.On examining the expression of genes related to the structure of flavonoids,pink flowers were found to have a higher number of upregulated genes than white flowers,which resulted in higher flavonoid accumulation in the pink flowers.These results underscore the potential applications and development value of cotton rose flowers.Our study provides relevant insights into the regulation of key active components and the theoretical basis for the efficient utilization of cotton rose flowers. 展开更多

Ulvophytes are attractive model systems for understanding the evolution of growth,development,and environmental stress responses.They are untapped resources for food,fuel,and high-value compounds.The rapid and abundant growth of Ulva species makes them key contributors to coastal biogeochemical cycles,which can cause significant environmental problems in the form of green tides and biofouling.Until now,the Ulva mutabilis genome is the only Ulva genome to have been sequenced.To obtain further insights into the evolutionary forces driving divergence in Ulva species,we analyzed 3905 single copy ortholog family from U.mutabilis,Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Volvox carteri to identify genes under positive selection(GUPS)in U.mutabilis.We detected 63 orthologs in U.mutabilis that were considered to be under positive selection.Functional analyses revealed that several adaptive modifications in photosynthesis,amino acid and protein synthesis,signal transduction and stress-related processes might explain why this alga has evolved the ability to grow very rapidly and cope with the variable coastal ecosystem environments. 展开更多

Oxidative stress has long been associated with the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),and it has been suggested that the combined administration of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents may be helpful for its treatment.Biopeptides from plant proteins,such as soybean glycinin tripeptide VPY,effectively inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators in intestinal epithelial and immune cells,which are both involved in the pathogenesis of IBD.This study aimed to produce antioxidant biopeptides from proteins of Lupinus mutabilis seeds and then encapsulate them in chitosan nanoparticles(NPs)for colonic delivery.An antioxidant peptide fraction of less than three kDa(UF3)was obtained and added at different concentrations(0.1–0.4 mg/ml)in chitosan solutions.The NPs were prepared by gelation with tripolyphosphate(CTPP-UF3)or spray freeze-drying of the chitosan solution(SFDC-UF3).Sizes of 332±13 and 465±58 nm and maximum encapsulation efficiencies of 63.80 and 71.75%,respectively,were obtained.UF3 maintained its antioxidant capacity(>80%)and showed different release profiles in 1X PBS buffer at pH 7.4,depending on the encapsulation method.FT-IR showed hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between the peptide and chitosan.Both nanosystems maintained cell viability greater than 70%in colonic cell lines HT-29.These results show that both methods are appropriate for the nanoencapsulation of UF3 and can be used to design nanoparticles for colonic delivery. 展开更多
