The shallow gassy soils significantly affect the construction of underground projects. Proper characterization of spatial distribution of shallow gassy soils is indispensable prior to construction of underground projects in the area. Due to the costly conditions required in the site investigation for gassy soils, only a limited number of gas pressure data can be obtained in engineering practice, which leads to the uncertainty in characterizing spatial distribution of gassy soils. Determining the number of boreholes for investigating gassy soils and their corresponding locations is pivotal to reducing construction risk induced by gassy soils. However, this primarily relies on the engineering experience in the current site investigation practice. This study develops a probabilistic site investigation optimization method for planning investigation schemes (including the number and locations of boreholes) of gassy soils based on the conditional random field and Monte Carlo simulation. The proposed method aims to provide an optimal investigation scheme before the site investigation based on prior knowledge. Finally, the proposed approach is illustrated using a case study.展开更多

In order to ensure the safe operation of railroads, there is a need for wind and sand protection in heavily sandy areas. The wind and sand flow in the region is notably bi-directional. To shield railroads from sand, a unique sand fence made of folded linear high-density polyethylene(HDPE) is used, aligning with the principle that the dominant wind direction is perpendicular to the fence. This study employed field observations and numerical simulations to investigate the effectiveness of these HDPE sand fences in altering flow field distribution and offering protection. It also explored how these fences affect the deposition and erosion of sand particles. Findings revealed a significant reduction in wind speed near the fence corner;the minimum horizontal wind speed on the leeward side of the first sand fence(LSF) decreased dramatically from 3 m/s to 0.64 m/s. The vortex area on the LSF markedly impacted horizontal wind speeds. Within the LSF, sand deposition was a primary occurrence. As wind speeds increased, the deposition zone shrank, whereas the positive erosion zone expanded. Close to the folded corners of the HDPE sand fence, there was a notable shift from the positive erosion zone to a deposition zone. Field tests and numerical simulations confirmed the high windproof efficiency(WE) and sand resistance efficiency(SE) in the HDPE sand fence. Folded linear HDPE sheet sand fence can effectively slow down the incoming flow and reduce the sand content, thus achieving good wind and sand protection. This study provides essential theoretical guidance for the design and improvement of wind and sand protection systems in railroad engineering.展开更多

Previous studies have mainly focused on the flow field around roadbeds, overlooking detailed examinations of sand particle erosion and deposition patterns near bridges and roadbeds. This study employs numerical simulations to analyze the influence of varying heights and wind speeds on sand deposition and erosion characteristics at different locations: the bridge-road transition section(side piers), middle piers, and roadbeds. The results show that the side piers, experience greater accumulation than the middle piers. Similarly, the leeward side of the roadbed witnesses more deposition compared to the windward side. Another finding reveals a reduced sand deposition length as the vertical profile, in alignment with the wind direction, moves further from the bridge abutments at the same clearance height. As wind speeds rise, there’s a decline in sand deposition and a marked increase in erosion around the side piers, middle piers and roadbeds. In conclusion, a bridge clearance that’s too low can cause intense sand damage near the side piers, while an extremely high roadbed may lead to extensive surface sand deposition. Hence, railway bridges in areas prone to sandy winds should strike a balance in clearance height. This research provides valuable guidelines for determining the most suitable bridge and roadbed heights in regions affected by wind and sand.展开更多

The model considers the thermal phenomena involved in the process, including conduction, radiation, and convection. A formula for the calculation of the heat conductivity of a sintering system containing solid phase, liquid phase, and gas phase is given. Due to the continuous movement of the laser beam, a local coordinate system centered on the laser beam is used to simplify the analytical calculation. Assuming that it is approximately a Gaussian laser beam, the heat conduction equation is resolved based on the assumption of the thermal insulating boundary conditions and the fixed thermal physical parameters. The FORTRAN language is employed to compile the program to simulate the temperature field in the direct copper powder sintering process. It shows a good agreement with the preliminary experimental results.[KH3/4D]展开更多

A point-force two-way coupling model is adopted in the simulation to reveal the particle modulation of turbulence. The particles mainly excite the initial instability of the jet and bring about the earlier breakup of vortex rings in the near-field. The flow fluc- tuating intensity either in the axial or in the radial directions is hence increased by particles. The article also describes the mean velocity modulated by particles. The changing statistical velocity induced by particle modulation implies the effects of modulation of the local flow structures. This study is expected to be useful to the control of two-phase turbulent jets.展开更多

文摘Shock wave caused by a sudden release of high-energy,such as explosion and blast, usually affects a significant range of areas. The utilization of a uniform fine mesh to capture sharp shock wave and to obtain precise results is inefficient in terms of computational resource. This is particularly evident when large-scale fluid field simulations are conducted with significant differences in computational domain size.In this work,a variable-domain-size adaptive mesh enlargement(vAME)method is developed based on the proposed adaptive mesh enlargement(AME)method for modeling multi-explosives explosion problems. The vAME method reduces the division of numerous empty areas or unnecessary computational domains by adaptively suspending enlargement operation in one or two directions, rather than in all directions as in AME method.A series of numerical tests via AME and vAME with varying nonintegral enlargement ratios and different mesh numbers are simulated to verify the efficiency and order of accuracy. An estimate of speedup ratio is analyzed for further efficiency comparison.Several large-scale near-ground explosion experiments with single/multiple explosives are performed to analyze the shock wave superposition formed by the incident wave, reflected wave, and Mach wave.Additionally, the vAME method is employed to validate the accuracy,as well as to investigate the performance of the fluid field and shock wave propagation, considering explosive quantities ranging from 1 to 5 while maintaining a constant total mass. The results show a satisfactory correlation between the overpressure versus time curves for experiments and numerical simulations. The vAME method yields a competitive efficiency, increasing the computational speed to 3.0 and approximately 120,000 times in comparison to AME and the fully fine mesh method, respectively. It indicates that the vAME method reduces the computational cost with minimal impact on the results for such large-scale high-energy release problems with significant differences in computational domain size.

文摘In nature, cavitation bubbles typically appear in clusters, engaging in interactions that create a variety of dynamicmotion patterns. To better understand the behavior ofmultiple bubble collapses and the mechanisms of interbubble interaction, this study employs molecular dynamics simulation combined with a coarse-grained force field.By focusing on collapsemorphology, local density, and pressure,it elucidates how the number and arrangement of bubbles influence the collapse process. The mechanisms behind inter-bubble interactions are also considered. The findings indicate that the collapse speed of unbounded bubbles located in lateral regions is greater than that of the bubbles in the center. Moreover,it is shown that asymmetrical bubble distributions lead to a shorter collapse time overall.
文摘Magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)induction pumps are contactless pumps able to withstand harsh environments. The rate of fluid flow through the pump directly affects the efficiency and stability of the device. To explore the influence of induction pump settings on the related delivery speed,in this study,a numerical model for coupled electromagnetic and flow field effects is introduced and used to simulate liquid metal lithium flow in the induction pump. The effects of current intensity, frequency, coil turns and coil winding size on the velocity of the working fluid are analyzed. It is shown that the first three parameters have a significant impact, while changes in the coil turns have a negligible influence. The maximum increase in working fluid velocity within the pump for the parameter combination investigated in this paper is approximately 618%.As the frequency is increased from 20 to 60 Hz,the maximum increase in the mean flow rate of the working fluid is approximately 241%.These research findings are intended to support the design and optimization of these devices.

文摘Casting speed, casting temperature and secondary cooling water flow rate are the main process parameters affecting the DC casting process. These parameters significantly influence the flow and temperature fields during casting, which are crucial for the quality of the ingot and can determine the success or failure of the casting operation.Numerical simulation, with the advantages of low cost, rapid execution, and visualized results,is an important method to study and optimize the DC casting process. In the present work,a simulation model of DC casting 2024 aluminum alloy was established, and the reliability of the model was verified. Then, the influence of casting parameters on flow field and temperature field was studied in detail by numerical simulation method. Results show that with the increase of casting speed, the melt flow becomes faster, the depths of slurry zone and mushy zone increase, and the variation of slurry zone depth is greater than that of mushy zone. With an increase in casting temperature, the melt flow rate increases, the depth of the slurry zone becomes shallower, and the depth of the mushy zone experiences only minor changes. The simulation results further indicate that the increase of the flow rate of the secondary cooling water slightly reduces the depths of both slurry and mushy zone.

文摘Wind-sand flow generates erosion and deposition around obstacles such as bridges and roadbeds, resulting in sand damage and endangering railway systems in sandy regions. This research provides valuable guidelines for determining the most suitable bridge and roadbed heights in regions affected by wind and sand.

文摘The Underwater Communication Link(UCL)is a crucial component of Underwater Wireless Optical Communication(UWOC)systems, requiring optimised design to mitigate the high power attenuation inherent in seawater. To ensure the reliability of an optimal UCL design,it is essential to account for the three primary scattering regimes:forward scattering(FSC),backward scattering(BSC),and isotropic scattering(ISC)in seawater channels. This study introduces a new photon-tracking model based on a discrete equation, facilitating Monte Carlo Simulation(MCS)to evaluate how different scattering regimes influence received photon distribution.Three distinct Scattering Regime Contribution Weight(SRCW)probability sets were employed, each representing different UCL operational configurations dominated by specific scattering regimes. The proposed modeling approach enables a comprehensive assessment of the temporal characteristics of received optical pulses, channel loss, and time spread-ultimately defining the optimal UCL design parameters. The key findings of this study include:(1)Enhancing the FSC regime dominance leads to a quasi-light waveguide effect over link spans and small Fields of View(FOV)<25°,significantly improving channel performance in Harbor seawater compared to Coastal seawater.(2)A well-designed UCL with a small FOV(<25°)can minimise channel loss and time spread, ensuring high capacity and efficient performance in both Coastal and Harbor seawaters.(3)When BSC and ISC contributions exceed FSC dominance, the received optical pulse undergoes significant temporal broadening, particularly for larger FOV angles(>25°)and extended link spans.(4)The developed novel MCS-based discrete equation provides a simple yet robust model for simulating photon propagation in both homogeneous and inhomogeneous underwater channels. These insights contribute to developing more efficient and reliable UCL designs with military standards by enhancing UWOC system performance over a longer linkspan for a given limited optical power across various underwater environments.

文摘The smelting reduction process of the ilmenite in an electric arc furnace(EAF)is a commonly used technology for producing titanium slag in the world. It has particular significance to analyze the velocity-temperature-electromagnetics multi-physical field in an EAF for improving its productivity and reducing energy consumption.A transient three-dimensional mathematical model was developed to characterize the flow, heat transfer, and electromagnetic behavior in a titanium slag EAF.For describing the electromagnetic field and its effects on velocity and temperature distribution in the furnace, magnetohydrodynamic equations and conservation equations for mass, momentum, and energy were solved simultaneously by compiling the user-defined function program. The numerical model was verified by comparing with the literature data. The results indicate that the Lorentz force is the main driving force of the velocity and temperature distribution. Moreover, the influence of input current and location of electrodes on the multi-physical field distribution was also investigated. It is found that the appropriate range of input current and diameter of pitch circle are about 30,000 A and 3000-3500 mm,respectively. The mathematical model established can characterize the multi-physical field more accu-rately than before, which can provide valuable guidance for the operation improvement and design optimization of the EAF for producing titanium slag.
文摘A mathematical model is developed for simulating the heat transferring behavior in a direct metal laser sintering process. It shows a good agreement with the preliminary experimental results.[KH3/4D]

文摘This article investigates the near-field dynamics in a particle-laden round turbulent jet in a large-eddy simulation (LES). This study is expected to be useful to the control of two-phase turbulent jets.
文摘To accelerate the practicality of electromagnetic railguns,it is necessary to use a combination of threedimensional numerical simulation and experiments to study the mechanism of bore damage. In this paper,a three-dimensional numerical model of the augmented railgun with four parallel unconventional rails is introduced to simulate the internal ballistic process and realize the multi-physics field coupling calculation of the rail gun,and a test experiment of a medium-caliber electromagnetic launcher powered by pulse formation network(PFN)is carried out.Various test methods such as spectrometer, fiber grating and high-speed camera are used to test several parameters such as muzzle initial velocity, transient magnetic field strength and stress-strain of rail.Combining the simulation results and experimental data, the damage condition of the contact surface is analyzed.
