As a means of quantitative interpretation, forward calculations of the global lithospheric magnetic field in the Spherical Harmonic(SH)domain have been widely used to reveal geophysical, lithological, and geothermal variations in the lithosphere.Traditional approaches either do not consider the non-axial dipolar terms of the inducing field and its radial variation or do so by means of complicated formulae. Moreover, existing methods treat the magnetic lithosphere either as an infinitesimally thin layer or as a radially uniform spherical shell of constant thickness. Here,we present alternative forward formulae that account for an arbitrarily high maximum degree of the inducing field and for a magnetic lithosphere of variable thickness. Our simulations based on these formulae suggest that the satellite magnetic anomaly field is sensitive to the non-axial dipolar terms of the inducing field but not to its radial variation. Therefore,in forward and inverse calculations of satellite magnetic anomaly data, the non-axial dipolar terms of the inducing field should not be ignored.Furthermore, our results show that the satellite magnetic anomaly field is sensitive to variability in the lateral thickness of the magnetized shell. In particular,we show that for a given vertically integrated susceptibility distribution, underestimating the thickness of the magnetic layer overestimates the induced magnetic field. This discovery bridges the greatest part of the alleged gap between the susceptibility values measured from rock samples and the susceptibility values required to match the observed magnetic field signal. We expect the formulae and conclusions of this study to be a valuable tool for the quantitative interpretation of the Earth's global lithospheric magnetic field, through an inverse or forward modelling approach. 展开更多

Seepage refers to the flow of water through porous materials. This phenomenon has a crucial role in dam, slope, excavation, tunnel, and well design.Performing seepage analysis usually is a challenging task,as one must cope with the uncertainty associated with the parameters such as the hydraulic conductivity in the horizontal and vertical directions that drive this phenomenon. However,at the same time, the data on horizontal and vertical hydraulic conductivities are typically scarce in spatial resolution. In this context,so-called non-traditional approaches for uncertainty quantification(such as intervals and fuzzy variables)offer an interesting alternative to classical probabilistic methods, since they have been shown to be quite effective when limited information on the governing parameters of a phenomenon is available. Therefore, the main contribution of this study is the development of a framework for conducting seepage analysis in saturated soils, where uncertainty associated with hydraulic conductivity is characterized using fuzzy fields. This method to characterize uncertainty extends interval fields towards the domain of fuzzy numbers. In fact,it is illustrated that fuzzy fields are an effective tool for capturing uncertainties with a spatial component, since they allow one to account for available physical measurements.A case study in confined saturated soil shows that with the proposed framework,it is possible to quantify the uncertainty associated with seepage flow, exit gradient, and uplift force effectively. 展开更多

The nonlinear traveling wave vibration of rotating ferromagnetic functionally graded(FG)cylindrical shells under multi-physics fields is investigated.Grounded in the Kirchhoff-Love thin shell theory, the geometric nonlinearity is incorporated into the model, and the constitutive equations are derived. The physical parameters of functionally graded materials(FGMs),which exhibit continuous variation across the thickness gradient, are of particular interest. The nonlinear magneto-thermoelastic governing equations are derived in accord with Hamilton's principle. The nonlinear partial differential equations are discretized with the Galerkin method, and the analytical expression of traveling wave frequencies is derived with an approximate method. The accuracy of the proposed method is validated through the comparison with the results from the literature and numerical solutions. Finally, the visualization analyses are conducted to examine the effects of key parameters on the traveling wave frequencies. The results show that the factors including the power-law index, temperature, magnetic field intensity, and rotating speed have the coupling effects with respect to the nonlinear vibration behavior. 展开更多

The longitudinal cracks distributed along the dam axis in the corridor of a dam may have potential safety hazards.According to the detection results of crack depth and width and the analysis of monitoring data,a three-dimensional finite element model is established for numerical simulation calculation and the influence of cracks on the safety of dam structure is analyzed from different aspects such as deformation, stress value, and distribution range. The calculation results show that the maximum principal tensile stress value and the location of the dam body are basically independent of the change of crack depth(within 1.0 m).Regarding local stress around the corridor, the high upstream water level causes cracks to deepen, resulting in an increase in the maximum tensile stress near the crack tip and an expansion of the tensile stress region. 展开更多

Fine particulate matter produced during the rapid industrialization over the past decades can cause significant harm to human health.Twin-fluid atomization technology is an effective means of controlling fine particulate matter pollution. In this paper, the influences of the main parameters on the droplet size, effective atomization range and sound pressure level(SPL)of a twin-fluid nozzle(TFN)are investigated, and in order to improve the atomization performance,a multi-objective synergetic optimization algorithm is presented.A multi-physics coupled acousticmechanics model based on the discrete phase model(DPM),large eddy simulation(LES)model, and Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings(FW-H)model is established, and the numerical simulation results of the multi-physics coupled acoustic-mechanics method are verified via experimental comparison.Based on the analysis of the multi-physics coupled acoustic-mechanics numerical simulation results, the effects of the water flow on the characteristics of the atomization flow distribution were obtained.A multi-physics coupled acoustic-mechanics numerical simulation result was employed to establish an orthogonal test database, and a multi-objective synergetic optimization algorithm was adopted to optimize the key parameters of the TFN.The optimal parameters are as follows:A gas flow of 0.94 m^(3)/h,water flow of 0.0237 m^(3)/h,orifice diameter of the self-excited vibrating cavity(SVC)of 1.19 mm,SVC orifice depth of 0.53 mm,distance between SVC and the outlet of nozzle of 5.11 mm,and a nozzle outlet diameter of 3.15 mm.The droplet particle size in the atomization flow field was significantly reduced, the spray distance improved by 71.56%,and the SPL data at each corresponding measurement point decreased by an average of 38.96%.The conclusions of this study offer a references for future TFN research. 展开更多

Taking into account the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids and the influence of latent heat of wax crystallization, this study establishes physical and mathematical models for the synergy of tubular heating and mechanical stirring during the waxy crude oil heating process.Numerical calculations are conducted using the sliding grid technique and FVM.The focus of this study is on the impact of stirring rate(τ),horizontal deflection angle(θ1),vertical deflection angle(θ2),and stirring diameter(D)on the heating effect of crude oil.Our results show that asτincreases from 200 rpm to 500 rpm and D increases from 400 mm to 600 mm,there is an improvement in the average crude oil temperature and temperature uniformity.Additionally, heating efficiency increases by 0.5%and 1%,while the volume of the low-temperature region decreases by 57.01 m^(3) and 36.87 m3,respectively.Asθ1 andθ2 increase from 0°to 12°,the average crude oil temperature, temperature uniformity, and heating efficiency decrease, while the volume of the low-temperature region remains basically the same.Grey correlation analysis is used to rank the importance of stirring parameters in the following order:τ>θ1>θ2>D.Subsequently,multiple regression analysis is used to quantitatively describe the relationship between different stirring parameters and heat transfer evaluation indices through equations. Finally, based on entropy generation minimization, the stirring parameters with optimal heat transfer performance are obtained when τ=350 rpm,θ1=θ2=0°,and D=500 mm. 展开更多

This study explores the aerodynamic performance and flow field characteristics of supercritical carbon dioxide(sCO_(2))centrifugal compressors under varying operating conditions. In particular, the Sandia main compressor impeller model is used as a reference system.Through three-dimensional numerical simulations,we examine the Mach number distribution, temperature field, blade pressure pulsation spectra, and velocity field evolution, and identify accordingly the operating boundaries ensuring stability and the mechanisms responsible for performance degradation.Findings indicate a stable operating range for mass flow rate between 0.74 and 3.74 kg/s.At the lower limit(0.74 kg/s),the maximum Mach number within the compressor decreases by 28%,while the temperature gradient sharpens, entropy rises notably, and fluid density varies significantly. The maximum pressure near the blades increases by 6%,yet flow velocity near the blades and outlet declines, with a 19%reduction in peak speed.Consequently, isentropic efficiency falls by 13%.Conversely,at 3.74 kg/s,the maximum Mach number increases by 23.7%,with diminished temperature gradients and minor fluid density variations. However, insufficient enthalpy gain and intensified pressure pulsations near the blades result in a 12%pressure drop.Peak velocity within the impeller channel surges by 23%,amplifying velocity gradients, inducing flow separation, and ultimately reducing the pressure ratio from 1.47 to 1.34. 展开更多

To accurately acquire deep-sea live biological samples,a hydraulic suction macro-biological pressure-retaining sampler(HSMPS)was designed to achieve active capture of seafloor biological by a suction pump. The complex flow fields of deep-sea biologicals at three different locations were simulated. The deep-sea biologicals cause the flow field pressure and velocity to rise at different locations of the sampler, and the magnitude of the rise varies at different locations. The internal flow properties of the sampler were analyzed for different pumping flow rates the sampler. When the flow rate of the sampler pump was greater than 14 m3/h,the velocity of the inlet of the inflow area was greater than the limiting velocity of the deep-sea biologicals. The pumping test of deep-sea biologicals pumping sampler was carried out in the laboratory, and the test results were basically consistent with the simulation analysis. In order to balance the deep-sea biologicals damage and escape rate, the pumping flow of the sampler should be controlled between 14 and 16 m3/h.The test results provide a theoretical basis for the design of deep-sea biologicals sampling equipment. 展开更多

Self-oscillating systems abound in the natural world and offer substantial potential for applications in controllers,micro-motors,medical equipments, and so on.Currently, numerical methods have been widely utilized for obtaining the characteristics of self-oscillation including amplitude and frequency. However, numerical methods are burdened by intricate computations and limited precision, hindering comprehensive investigations into self-oscillating systems. In this paper, the stability of a liquid crystal elastomer fiber self-oscillating system under a linear temperature field is studied, and analytical solutions for the amplitude and frequency are determined.Initially,we establish the governing equations of self-oscillation,elucidate two motion regimes, and reveal the underlying mechanism.Subsequently,we conduct a stability analysis and employ a multi-scale method to obtain the analytical solutions for the amplitude and frequency. The results show agreement between the multi-scale and numerical methods. This research contributes to the examination of diverse self-oscillating systems and advances the theoretical analysis of self-oscillating systems rooted in active materials. 展开更多

Purpose:We analyzed the structure of a community of authors working in the field of social network analysis(SNA)based on citation indicators:direct citation and bibliographic coupling metrics. We observed patterns at the micro, meso, and macro levels of analysis.Design/methodology/approach:We used bibliometric network analysis, including the“temporal quantities”approach proposed to study temporal networks.Using a two-mode network linking publications with authors and a one-mode network of citations between the works,we constructed and analyzed the networks of citation and bibliographic coupling among authors. We used an iterated saturation data collection approach.Findings:At the macro-level,we observed the global structural features of citations between authors, showing that 80%of authors have not more than 15 citations from other works. At the meso-level,we extracted the groups of authors citing each other and similar to each other according to their citation patterns. We have seen a division of authors in SNA into groups of social scientists and physicists,as well as into other groups of authors from different disciplines. We found some examples of brokerage between different groups that maintained the common identity of the field. At the micro-level,we extracted authors with extremely high values of received citations, who can be considered as the most prominent authors in the field. We examined the temporal properties of the most popular authors.Research limitations:The main challenge in this approach is the resolution of the author’s name(synonyms and homonyms). We faced the author disambiguation,or“multiple personalities”(Harzing,2015)problem.To remain consistent and comparable with our previously published articles,we used the same SNA data collected up to 2018.The analysis and conclusions on the activity, productivity, and visibility of the authors are relative only to the field of SNA.Practical implications:The proposed approach can be utilized for similar objectives and identifying key structures and characteristics in other disciplines. This may potentially inspire the application of network approaches in other research areas, creating more authors collaborating in the field of SNA.Originality/value:We identified and applied an innovative approach and methods to study the structure of scientific communities, which allowed us to get the findings going beyond those obtained with other methods. We used a new approach to temporal network analysis, which is an important addition to the analysis as it provides detailed information on different measures for the authors and pairs of authors over time. 展开更多

This study aims to improve the performances of the high-pressure water descaling technology used in steel hot rolling processes. In particular,a 2050 mm hot rolling line is considered, and the problem is investigated by means of a fluid–structure interaction(FSI)method by which the descaling effect produced by rolling coils with different section sizes is examined.Assuming a flat fan-shaped nozzle at the entrance of the R1R2 roughing mill, the outflow field characteristics and the velocity distribution curve on the strike line(at a target distance of 30–120 mm)are determined. It is found that the velocity in the center region of the water jet with different target distances is higher than that in the boundary region. As the target distance increases, the velocity of the water jet in the central region decreases.Through comparison with experimental results,it is shown that the simulation model can accurately predict the impact position of the high-pressure water on the impact plate, thereby providing a computational scheme that can be used to optimize the nozzle space layout and improve the slabs’descent effect for different rolling specifications. 展开更多

In western China seismic wave fields are very complicated and have low signal to noise ratio. In this paper,we focus on complex wave field research by forward modeling and indicate that density should not be ignored in wave field simulation if the subsurface physical properties are quite different. We use the acoustic wave equation with density in the staggered finite-difference method to simulate the wave fields. For this purpose a complicated geologic structural model with rugged surfaces,near-surface low-velocity layers, and high-velocity outcropping layers was designed.Based on the instantaneous wave field distribution,we analyzed the mechanism forming complex wave fields. The influence of low velocity layers on the wave field is very strong.A strong waveguide occurs between the top and base of a low velocity layer, producing multiples which penetrate into the earth and form strong complex wave fields in addition to reflections from subsurface interfaces. For verifying the correctness of the simulated wave fields, prestack depth migration was performed using different algorithms from the forward modeling. The structure revealed by the stacked migration profile is same as the known structure. 展开更多

The determination of the ultimate load-bearing capacity of structures made of elastoplastic heterogeneous materials under varying loads is of great importance for engineering analysis and design. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately predict the shakedown domains of these materials. The static shakedown theorem, also known as Melan's theorem, is a fundamental method used to predict the shakedown domains of structures and materials. Within this method, a key aspect lies in the construction and application of an appropriate self-equilibrium stress field(SSF). In the structural shakedown analysis, the SSF is typically constructed by governing equations that satisfy no external force(NEF) boundary conditions. However, we discover that directly applying these governing equations is not suitable for the shakedown analysis of heterogeneous materials. Researchers must consider the requirements imposed by the Hill-Mandel condition for boundary conditions and the physical significance of representative volume elements(RVEs). This paper addresses this issue and demonstrates that the sizes of SSFs vary under different boundary conditions, such as uniform displacement boundary conditions(DBCs), uniform traction boundary conditions(TBCs), and periodic boundary conditions(PBCs). As a result, significant discrepancies arise in the predicted shakedown domain sizes of heterogeneous materials. Built on the demonstrated relationship between SSFs under different boundary conditions, this study explores the conservative relationships among different shakedown domains, and provides proof of the relationship between the elastic limit(EL) factors and the shakedown loading factors under the loading domain of two load vertices. By utilizing numerical examples, we highlight the conservatism present in certain results reported in the existing literature. Among the investigated boundary conditions, the obtained shakedown domain is the most conservative under TBCs.Conversely, utilizing PBCs to construct an SSF for the shakedown analysis leads to less conservative lower bounds, indicating that PBCs should be employed as the preferred boundary conditions for the shakedown analysis of heterogeneous materials. 展开更多

In a continuous casting process, it is essential to prevent the surface defects which are caused by the mold powder entrapments. It is well known that the decrease in the molten steel flow velocity just under the free surface is one of the most effective methods for the prevention of mold powder entrapments. For this purpose, the electro-magnetic level stabilizer (EMLS) has been developed, which is applied to a low frequency alternating magnetic field moving from the narrow face of the mold to the mold center below the nozzle exits. In this study, the effect of the EMLS on the molten steel flow is investigated. Numerical simulation of the electromagnetic field and the molten steel flow in a mold were carried out. Simulation results indicate that, due to the electromagnetic force, the molten steel is forced to flow toward the magnetic field traveling direction in the region where the magnetic field is imposed. The molten steel flow is decelerated in proportion to the imposed electromagnetic force. Consequently, the molten steel flows toward the mold center near the free surface with a smaller imposed electromagnetic force, and it flows toward the nozzle at the nozzle side and toward the narrow face at the narrow face side with a larger imposed electromagnetic force. However, the magnitude of the electromagnetic force is decided by the current intensity and frequency, a suitable imposed electric current can be chosen to minimize the flow velocity and also the amount of mold powder entrapments. 展开更多

Accurate on-site determination of arsenic (As) concentration as well as its speciation presents a great environmental challenge especially to developing countries. To meet the need of routine field monitoring, we developed a rapid colorimetric method with a wide dynamic detection range and high precision. The novel application of KMnO4 and CHaN2S as effective As(III) oxidant and As(V) reductant, respectively, in the formation of molybdenum blue complexes enabled the differentiation of As(III) and As(V). The detection limit of the method was 8 ~tg/L with a linear range (R2 = 0.998) of four orders of magnitude in total As concentrations. The As speciation in groundwater samples determined with the colorimetric method in the field were consistent with the results using the high performance liquid chromatography atomic fluorescence spectrometry, as evidenced by a linear correlation in paired analysis with a slope of 0.9990- 0.9997 (p 〈 0.0001, n = 28). The recovery of 96%-116% for total As, 85%-122% for As(III), and 88%-127% for As(V) were achieved for groundwater samples with a total As concentration range 100-800 μg/L. The colorimetric result showed that 3.61 g/L As(III) existed as the only As species in a real industrial wastewater, which was in good agreement with the HPLC-AFS result of 3.56 g/L As(Ⅲ). No interference with the color development was observed in the presence of sulfate, phosphate, silicate, humic acid, and heavy metals from complex water matrix. This accurate, sensitive, and easy-to-use method is especially suitable for field As determination. 展开更多
