Among these models, the coupled bolt model provides the best accurate responses compared with the experimental results. The contact bolt model shows the best effectiveness and usefulness in view of operational time. The bolt models proposed in this study are adopted for a dynamic characteristic analysis of a large diesel engine consisting of several parts which are connected by many bolts. Based on von Mises yield criterion and perfect elasto-plasticity model, a series of finite element models of the joints is established, in which the effect of geometric nonlinearity is taken into account. Then mechanical behavior and load-carrying capacity of the joints were investigated, which were subjected to axial load, in- and out-plane bending moments, and their combinations. The results show that the ultimate loads of the joints are determined by the maximum displacement. Furthermore, the case of one joint connected with multiple beams was discussed. Experiments on a set of typical full-scale joints were conducted to understand the structural behavior and the failure mechanism of joint, and also to validate the finite element models. Finally, the practical calculation method was established through finite elements analysis (FEA) results and numerical fitting. The results show that the joints are more ductile and materially economical than welded hollow spherical joints, and the practical calculation method can provide a reference for direct design and the revision of relevant design codes.展开更多

The conflict of goals in the development process and the late testability leads to the need of a deeper basic understanding of the squeal phenomenon and definition of design rules. On the other hand, brake squeal is still a very interesting field of research also for the universities because of its combination of different fundamentals, such as friction and stability behaviour of systems with local nonlinearities. Major nonlinearities of the brake system are the joints, especially the contact areas formed by the oscillating brake pad and the caliper. The state-of-the-art calculation method, which still is the "complex eigenvalue analysis", linearizes these joints, hence, neglecting its nonlinear influence in the stability analysis. Vehicle and bench experiments show that special driving manoeuvres like parking, where the brake pad often leaves the steady state, are likely causing brake squeal. The system in these manoeuvres sometimes behaves opposed to the linearized stability analysis, indicating a limit cycle beyond the Hopf point. Therefore, these states must be investigated more closely. This paper investigates the nonlinear influence of the pad caliper joint in a fixed brake caliper, also called abutment. Bench tests with pressure foils at the abutment of the brake caliper and mode shape analysis were done and a simple FE (finite element) model for a transient simulation is proposed. It is shown that the joint activity varies with driving manoeuvres, leading to different stability behaviours and limiting cycle amplitudes.展开更多

In the proposed algorithm, by using the Monte-Carlo technique, random joint network was generated in the domain of interest. Based on the joint network, the triangular DDA block system was automatically generated by adopting the advanced front method. In the process of generating blocks, numerous artificial joints came into being, and once the stress states at some artificial joints satisfy the failure criterion given beforehand, artificial joints will turn into real joints. In this way, the whole fragmentation process of rock mass can be replicated. The algorithm logic was described in detail, and several numerical examples were carried out to obtain some insight into the failure behavior of rock mass containing random joints. From the numerical results, it can be found that the crack initiates from the crack tip, the growth direction of the crack depends upon the loading and constraint conditions, and the proposed method can reproduce some complicated phenomena in the whole process of rock failure.展开更多

The simulation experiments of accelerated thermal cycling test were performed by ANSYS software. Based on orthogonal array experiments, a back-propagation artificial neural network (BPNN) was used to establish the nonlinear multivariate relationship between thermo-mechanical fatigue reliability and control factors. Then, PSO was applied to obtaining the optimal levels of control factors by using the output of BPNN as the affinity measure. The results show that the control factors, such as print circuit board (PCB) size, PCB thickness, substrate size, substrate thickness, PCB coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), substrate CTE, silicon die CTE, and solder joint CTE, have a great influence on thermo-mechanical fatigue reliability of PBGA solder joints. The ratio of signal to noise of ANN-PSO method is 51.77 dB and its error is 33.3% less than that of Taguchi method. Moreover, the running time of ANN-PSO method is only 2% of that of the BPNN. A semi-analytic method for stress analysis under the condition of any loads is briefly introduced in the paper. Nineteen multiplanar tubular DT joints with one of two braces of the same dimension subjected to axial loads and out- of- plane bending moments are computed for parametric stress analysis by using the present method. Both the types of shape deviations and their values need to be taken into account in the designing process and play an important role during machine operation. They have a crucial effect on the value and scatter of maximum reduced von Mises stresses and contact stresses. Axisymmetric joints were examined, in which shafts in selected shape variants and in variable angular positions were associated with a non-deformable hole. The aspects of contact zone problems are presented using the example of numerical simulation of contact between an elliptical saddle-shaped shaft placed in a rigid, non-deformable hole in different angular positions.
