In the past several decades, many methods have been proposed to assess ecological flow for rivers and ecological water level for lakes or wetlands. To balance water uses by human and ecosystems, we proposed a general multi-objective programming model to determine minimum ecological flow or water level for inland water bodies, where two objectives are water index for human and habitat index for ecosystems, respectively Using the weighted sum method for multi-objective optimization, minimum ecological flow or water level can be determined from the breakpoint in the water index-habitat index curve, which is similar to the slope method to de- termine minimum ecological flow from wetted perimeter-discharge curve. However, the general multi-objective programming model is superior to the slope method in its physical meaning and calculation method. This model provides a general analysis method for ecological water uses of different inland water bodies, and can be used to define minimum ecological flow or water level by choosing appropriate water and habitat indices. Several com- monly used flow or water level assessment methods were found to be special cases of the general model, including the wetted perimeter method and the multi-objective physical habitat simulation method for ecological river flow, the inundated forest width method for regeneration flow of floodplain forest and the lake surface area method for eco- logical lake level. These methods were applied to determine minimum ecological flow or water level for two repre- sentative rivers and a lake in northern Xinjiang of China, including minimum ecological flow for the Ertix River, minimum regeneration flow for floodplain forest along the midstream of Kaxgar River, and minimum ecological lake level for the Ebinur Lake. The results illustrated the versatility of the general model, and can provide references for water resources planning and ecosystem protection for these rivers and lake.展开更多

In addition, there are many other organisms and species present in river waters that also require water for their survival. Due to the lack of awareness many times the minimum required quantity and quality of water for river ecosystem is not made available at downstream of storage reservoirs. So, a sustainable approach is required in reservoir operations to maintain the river ecosystem with environmental flow while meeting the other demands. Multi-objective, multi-reservoir operation model developed with Python programming using Fuzzy Linear Programing method incorporating environmental flow requirement of river is presented in this paper. Objective of maximization of irrigation release is considered for first run. In second run maximization of releases for hydropower generation is considered as objective. Further both objectives are fuzzified by incorporating linear membership function and solved to maximize fuzzified objective function simultaneously by maximizing satisfaction level indicator (λ). The optimal reservoir operation policy is presented considering constraints including Irrigation release, Turbine release, Reservoir storage, Environmental flow release and hydrologic continuity. Model applied for multi-reservoir system consists of four reservoirs, i.e., Jayakwadi Stage-I Reservoir (R1), Jayakwadi Stage-II Reservoir (R2), Yeldari Reservoir (R3), Siddheshwar Reservoir (R4) in Godavari River sub-basin from Marathwada region of Maharashtra State, India.展开更多

The main idea of HMOABC is to extend original ABC algorithm to multi-objective and cooperative mode by combining the Pareto dominance and divide-and-conquer approach. HMOABC is then used in the 30-bus IEEE test system for solving the OPF problem considering the cost, loss, and emission impacts. The simulation results show that the HMOABC is superior to other algorithms in terms of optimization accuracy and computation robustness.展开更多

M...The paper describes a new human-interface system design method by combining the conception of Multilevel Flow Model and Ecological Interface Design to support operators’ fault diagnosis in the complex plant system. Modern man-made systems are always achieving many complex automatic and intelligent tasks so that they are becoming more and more complex and can be hardly understood by operators, who should be the primary role in system operating. This situation presents a big challenge to the operating support system that it should present the complex system in a direct and clear way to operators to and make operators understand the internal interaction of the system especially in the abnormal status to ensure the operating safety. The Multilevel Flow Model based on the idea of ”Abstraction Hierarchy”, aiming at decompressing a system by means-end and part-whole way, can be used to represent a complex system in a standard way and perform intelligent operating tasks such as fault diagnosis and process control. Ecological Interface Design, which based on the human cognitive properties, can present the internal interaction of the system in a direct way. This paper combines this two interface design conceptions to achieve two aspects, intelligent fault diagnosis and direct presentation of causal relationship of operating parameters, to support operators’ fault diagnosis in complex plant system. The design method is applied to a PWR power plant in this paper as an application example.展开更多

The ecological behavior of LAS. including degradation, migration, and plant uptake, in both soil-paddy rice and soil-soybean systems was studied. Reduction of LAS in pot and field plots followed the first order reaction kinetics with degradation half-lives of 35-50 days with LAS decreasing to very low concentrations after a season of crop growth. Strong migration ability for LAS was found and the breakthrough time in a 1.5 in soil monolith was significantly shortened to 23 days by preferential flow. Leachate volumes of soil-paddy and soil-soybean systems at preferential breakthrough were much different, while the leachate volumes at equilibrium governed by soil adsorption/desorption processes were very similar. Significant uptake of LAS in both paddy rice and sovbeans was observed in pot and field experiments (P < 0.05). In aquatic culture, 20 μg mL-1 and above of LAS significantly inhibited the growth of paddy seedlings (P < 0.05). The critical concentration for LAS in soil inhibiting the growth and yield of paddy was 160 μg g-1; when higher, there was a strong negative influence, with decreases in height, spike length, and production, when lower than 80 μg g-1, paddy growth was stimulated. There was little effect of LAS on soybeans.展开更多

In order to reduce the negative influence of reservoir operation, ecological operation of the reservoir should be studied with a focus on maintaining a healthy river ecosystem. This study considered ecological operation targets, including maintaining the river environmental flow and protecting the spawning and reproduction of the Chinese sturgeon and four major Chinese carps. Using flow data from 1900 to 2006 at the Yichang gauging station as the control station data for the Yangtze River, the minimal and optimal river environmental flows were analyzed, and eco-hydrological targets for the Chinese sturgeon and four major Chinese carps in the Yangtze River were calculated. This paper proposes a reservoir ecological operation model, which comprehensively considers flood control, power generation, navigation, and the ecological environment. Three typical periods, wet, normal, and dry years, were selected, and the particle swarm optimization algorithm was used to analyze the model. The results show that ecological operation modes have different effects on the economic benefit of the hydropower station, and the reservoir ecological operation model can simulate the flood pulse for the requirements of spawning of the Chinese sturgeon and four major Chinese carps. According to the results, by adopting a suitable re-operation scheme, the hydropower benefit of the reservoir will not decrease dramatically while the ecological demand is met. The results provide a reference for designing reasonable operation schemes for the Three Gorges Reservoir.展开更多

To assess the integrated impact of water diversion on ecological water uses, we proposed a hierarchy evaluation model composed of four layers representing the evaluation goal, sub-areas of the influenced region, evaluation criteria, and water diversion schemes, respectively. The evaluation criteria for different types of ecological water uses were proposed, and the analytical hierarchy process was used for the integrated assessment. For a river ecosystem, the percentage of mean annual flow was used to define the grade of environmental flow. For a lake ecosystem, water recharge to the lake to compensate the lake water losses was used to assess the ecological water use of a lake. The flooding level of the wetland and the groundwater level in the riparian plain were used to assess the wetland and riparian ecological water uses, respectively. The proposed model was applied to a basin in northern Xinjiang in northwest China, where both water diversion and inter-basin water transfer projects were planned to be carried out. Based on assessment results for the whole study area and two sub-areas, an appropriate scheme was recommended from four planning schemes. With the recommended scheme, ecological water uses of the influenced ecosystems can be maintained at an acceptable level. Meanwhile, economical water requirements can be met to a great extent.展开更多

文摘The Luanhe River Delta is located in the center of the Circum-Bohai Sea Economic Zone.It enjoys rapid economic and social development while suffering relatively water scarcity. The overexploitation of groundwater in the Luanhe River Delta in recent years has caused the continuous drop of groundwater level and serious environmental and geological problems. This study systematically analyzes the evolution characteristics of the population, economy, and groundwater exploitation in the Luanhe River Delta and summarizes the change patterns of the groundwater flow regime in different aquifers in the Luanhe River Delta according to previous water resource assessment data as well as the latest groundwater survey results.Through comparison of major source/sink terms and groundwater resources, the study reveals the impacts of human activities on the groundwater resources and ecological environment in the study area over the past 30 years from 1990 to 2020.The results are as follows. The average annual drop rate of shallow groundwater and the deep groundwater in the centers of depression cones is 0.4 m and 1.64 m,respectively in the Luanhe River Delta in the past 30 years. The depression cones of shallow and deep groundwater in the study area cover an area of 545.32 km^(2)and 548.79 km^(2),respectively,accounting for more than 10%of the total area of the Luanhe River Delta.Overexploitation of groundwater has further aggravated land subsidence. As a result, two large-scale subsidence centers have formed, with a maximum subsidence rate of up to 120 mm/a.The drop of groundwater level has induced some ecological problems in the Luanhe River Delta area, such as the zero flow and water quality deterioration of rivers and continuous shrinkage of natural wetlands and water.Meanwhile, the proportion of natural wetland area to the total wetland area has been decreased from 99%to 8%and the water area from 1776 km^(2)to 263 km^(2).These results will provide data for groundwater overexploitation control, land subsidence prevention, and ecological restoration in plains and provide services for water resources management and national land space planning.

文摘Assessments of ecological importance based on static indexes that do not consider service flows frequently underestimate the importance of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as a "source".On the basis of natural environmental characteristics, this study selected six type of ecosystem services for evaluation, including water retention, soil retention, carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, sandstorm prevention, and tourism.According to the attributes of each ecosystem service flow,we calculated the flow length and traffic accessibility indexes, using Arc GIS hydrological module and kernel functions separately,to comprehensively analyse the ecological importance levels of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Results showed that after considering the service flows, the ecologically important zone shifted to the core area of the Three River Source Region, such as Zadoi County located in the Tanggula Mountains. The area of extreme importance is mainly distributed in the Yarlung Zangbo River basin,Tanggula Mountains,Hengduan Mountains, and Qilian Mountains, which accounts for 31.7% of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, providing approximately 60% of the ecosystem services and having extremely high protection efficiency and protection value.By introducing ecosystem service flow indexes, this study confirmed the ecological importance of core source areas such as the Tanggula Mountains, weakened the space bias caused by not considering the spatial transfer of ecosystem services, and provided technical support for optimizing ecological protection strategies and coordinating regional development.

文摘Extensive land use will cause many environmental problems. It is an urgent task to improve land use efficiency and optimize land use patterns. In recent years, due to the flow decrease, the Guanzhong Basin in Shaanxi Province is confronted with the problem of insufficient water resources reserve.Based on the Coupled Ground-Water and Surface-Water Flow Model(GSFLOW),this paper evaluates the response of water resources in the basin to changes in land use patterns, optimizes the land use pattern, improves the ecological and economic benefits, and the efficiency of various spatial development, providing a reference for ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin. The research shows that the land use pattern in the Guanzhong Basin should be further optimized.Under the condition of considering ecological and economic development, the percentage change of the optimum area of farmland, forest, grassland, water area, and urban area compared with the current land use area ratio is+2.3,+2.4,-6.1,+0.2,and+1.6,respectively.The economic and ecological value of land increases by14.1%and 3.1%,respectively,and the number of water resources can increase by 2.5%.
文摘Increasing demand for water from all sectors presents a challenge for policy makers to improve water allocation policies for storage reservoirs. Model applied for multi-reservoir system consists of four reservoirs, i.e., Jayakwadi Stage-I Reservoir (R1), Jayakwadi Stage-II Reservoir (R2), Yeldari Reservoir (R3), Siddheshwar Reservoir (R4) in Godavari River sub-basin from Marathwada region of Maharashtra State, India.

文摘The artificial bee colony(ABC) algorithm is improved to construct a hybrid multi-objective ABC algorithm, called HMOABC, for resolving optimal power flow(OPF) problem by simultaneously optimizing three conflicting objectives of OPF, instead of transforming multi-objective functions into a single objective function. The simulation results show that the HMOABC is superior to other algorithms in terms of optimization accuracy and computation robustness.

文摘The Xiaolangdi Reservoir has been operated for 23 consecutive years, greatly altering theflow and sediment processes of the Lower Yellow River. Many research have separately analyzed the changes of siltation in reservoirs and river channels, discharge capacity of the lower river channel, river regime stability,or ecological environmental benefits under water and sediment regulation. However, the multiple changes offlow and sediment transport, ecological environment, and social economy were seldom considered. We systematically and holistically explored the changes of river system in the Lower Yellow River since 2000,based on the channel erosion and siltation, channel morphology, ecosystem patterns and habitat quality, irrigation water scale, and crop production index. The results show that the discharge capacity of the main channel has been recovered significantly at a bankfull discharge of over 4700 m^(3)/s.The ecological pattern in the Lower Yellow River and the delta has been optimized. The wetland and water ecosystem area has been remarkably increased by 125.82%and 318.54%respectively,and the saline-alkali land area has been sharply reduced by 89.65%.The habitat quality has been raised to the highest level in nearly 40 years. The irrigation water volume in the irrigation area of the Lower Yellow River has been increased by 31%,and the grain production has maintained a continuous growth for 16 years.Overall, the coordinated development level offlow and sediment transport, ecological environment and crop production in the Lower Yellow River has been continuously improved from the reluctantly coordinated level(before water and sediment regulation)to the highly coordinated level.

文摘Materials and energy are transferred between natural and industrial systems, providing a standard that can be used to deduce the interactions between these systems, An examination of these flows is an essen- tial part of the conversation on how industry impacts the environment, We propose that biological sys- tems, which embody sustainability, provide methods and principles that can lead to more useful ways to organize industrial activity, Transposing these biological methods to steel manufacturing is manifested through an efficient use of available materials, waste reduction, and decreased energy demand with cur- rently available technology, In this paper, we use ecological metrics to examine the change in structure and flows of materials in the Chinese steel industry over time by means of a systems-based mass flow analysis, Utilizing available data, the results of our analysis indicate that the Chinese steel manufacturing industry has increased its efficiency and sustainable use of resources over time at the unit process level, However, the appropriate organization of the steel production ecosystem remains a work in progress, Our results suggest that through the intelligent placement of cooperative industries, which can utilize the waste generated from steel manufacturing, the future of the Chinese steel industry can better reflect ecosystem maturity and health while minimizing waste.
文摘The paper describes a new human-interface system design method by combining the conception of Multilevel Flow Model and Ecological Interface Design to support operators’ fault diagnosis in the complex plant system. The design method is applied to a PWR power plant in this paper as an application example.
文摘The paper gives a general description of the energy flow in Liuminying agro-eco-system through the facts of on-the-spot tests, quantitative analysis and calculation of output-input ratio of energy as well as of some main subsystems’ ecological efficiency. The results show that the output-input rate of the artificial supplementary energy was 1, the energy conversion efficiency of primary producer reached 1.54% and the light energy utilization rate was 0.65%. All kept higher rates. However, the ratio of secondary production was a little lower. The paper also gives a brief analysis of the calculation result and the relevant conclusion as well.

文摘More and more linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) has contaminated the water and soil ma pollution discharge, making it important to identify the ecological behavior and toxicity of LAS so as to carry out measures that will reduce its negative effects on the ecosystem. There was little effect of LAS on soybeans.

文摘The traditional operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir has mainly focused on water for flood control, power generation, navigation, water supply, and recreation, and given less attention to the negative impacts of reservoir operation on the river ecosystem. The results provide a reference for designing reasonable operation schemes for the Three Gorges Reservoir.

文摘In arid regions, large-scale water diversion from rivers leads to significant changes in river flow regimes, which may have large impacts on ecological water uses of river-dependent ecosystems, such as river, lake, wetland, and riparian ecosystems. Meanwhile, economical water requirements can be met to a great extent.

文摘The output uncertainty of high-proportion distributed power generation severely affects the system voltage and frequency.Simultaneously, controllable loads have also annually increased, which markedly improve the capability for nodal-power control. To maintain the system frequency and voltage magnitude around rated values,a new multi-objective optimization model for both voltage and frequency control is proposed. Moreover,a great similarity between the multiobjective optimization and game problems appears. To reduce the strong subjectivity of the traditional methods, the idea and method of the game theory are introduced into the solution.According to the present situational data and analysis of the voltage and frequency sensitivities to nodal-power variations, the design variables involved in the voltage and frequency control are classified into two strategy spaces for players using hierarchical clustering. Finally, the effectiveness and rationality of the proposed control are verified in MATLAB.
