Optimized control of grid-connected photovoltaic systems:Robust PI controller based on sparrow search algorithm for smart microgrid application

The integration of renewable energy sources into modern power systems necessitates efficient and robust control strategies to address challenges such as power quality,stability,and dynamic environmental variations.This paper presents a novel sparrow search algorithm(SSA)-tuned proportional-integral(PI)controller for grid-connected photovoltaic(PV)systems,designed to optimize dynamic perfor-mance,energy extraction,and power quality.Key contributions include the development of a systematic SSA-based optimization frame-work for real-time PI parameter tuning,ensuring precise voltage and current regulation,improved maximum power point tracking(MPPT)efficiency,and minimized total harmonic distortion(THD).The proposed approach is evaluated against conventional PSO-based and P&O controllers through comprehensive simulations,demonstrating its superior performance across key metrics:a 39.47%faster response time compared to PSO,a 12.06%increase in peak active power relative to P&O,and a 52.38%reduction in THD,ensuring compliance with IEEE grid standards.Moreover,the SSA-tuned PI controller exhibits enhanced adaptability to dynamic irradiancefluc-tuations,rapid response time,and robust grid integration under varying conditions,making it highly suitable for real-time smart grid applications.This work establishes the SSA-tuned PI controller as a reliable and efficient solution for improving PV system performance in grid-connected scenarios,while also setting the foundation for future research into multi-objective optimization,experimental valida-tion,and hybrid renewable energy systems. 展开更多

Around the world,there has been a notable shift toward the use of renewable energy technology due to the growing demand for energy and the ongoing depletion of conventional resources,such as fossil fuels.Following this worldwide trend,Brunei’s government has initiated several strategic programs aimed at encouraging the establishment of energy from renewable sources in the nation’s energy mix.These initiatives are designed not only to support environmental sustainability but also to make energy from renewable sources increasingly competitive in comparison to more conventional energy sources like gas and oil,which have historically dominated Brunei’s energy market.The optimization of a hybrid energy system that combines diesel generators,solar photovoltaic(PV)panels,and the national power grid is the focus of this study.The objective is to identify the most cost-effective and environmentally sustainable configuration that can reliably meet local energy demands.During optimization,several configuration was tried and tested,including only grid,PV and Grid and PV-generator.HOMER(Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources)software,a popular simulation tool that makes it possible to simulate and analyze hybrid energy systems,is utilized in the optimization process.Inside the HOMER Pro optimization,various system configuration is taken into account for the optimization.While simulating,it takes into account different combinations of components such as solar panels,wind turbines and batteries.Later on,it is being ranked by different factors such as net present cost(NPC),Cost of Energy(COE),etc.A comprehensive techno-economic research is carried out to evaluate various system configurations,considering key performance indicators such as total energy generation cost,operational expenditure,and greenhouse gas emissions.The results provide valuable insights into how renewable-based hybrid systems can reduce environmental impact while maintaining economic viability,supporting Brunei’s broader goals of energy diversification and sustainability.The study also emphasizes how such hybrid systems could be scaled for off-grid and rural populations in Brunei,where a dependable electricity supply is still a problem.Furthermore,sensitivity analyses were performed to evaluate the effects of variations in solar irradiation,load demand,and fuel prices on the overall system performance.Policymakers and energy planners can use these insights to help them make data-driven decisions about future investments in infrastructure for renewable energy. 展开更多

This paper presents a novel active disturbance rejection control(ADRC)scheme based on a cascade connection of generalized proportional integral observers(GPIOs)with internal models designed to estimate both polynomial and resonant disturbances.In this estimator structure,referred to as Cascade GPIO(CGPIO),the total disturbance sensitivity is the product of the sensitivities at each cascade level.This approach improves system performance against both periodic and non-periodic disturbances and enhances robustness under frequency variations in harmonic components.Additionally,the decoupled nature of the estimator reduces the order of the GPIOs,thereby simplifying tuning and limiting observer gains.The proposed control scheme is supported by a frequency-domain analysis and is experimentally validated in the current control of a grid-connected converter subject to control gain uncertainties,harmonic distortion,frequency deviations,and measurement noise.Experimental results demonstrate that the CGPIO-based ADRC outperforms benchmark solutions,including proportional-integral(PI)and proportional-resonant(PR)controllers. 展开更多

In recent years,distributed photovoltaics(DPV)has ushered in a good development situation due to the advantages of pollution-free power generation,full utilization of the ground or roof of the installation site,and balancing a large number of loads nearby.However,under the background of a large-scale DPV grid-connected to the county distribution network,an effective analysis method is needed to analyze its impact on the voltage of the distribution network in the early development stage of DPV.Therefore,a DPV orderly grid-connected method based on photovoltaics grid-connected order degree(PGOD)is proposed.This method aims to orderly analyze the change of voltage in the distribution network when large-scale DPV will be connected.Firstly,based on the voltagemagnitude sensitivity(VMS)index of the photovoltaics permitted grid-connected node and the acceptance of grid-connected node(AoGCN)index of other nodes in the network,thePGODindex is constructed to determine the photovoltaics permitted grid-connected node of the current photovoltaics grid-connected state network.Secondly,a photovoltaics orderly grid-connected model with a continuous updating state is constructed to obtain an orderly DPV grid-connected order.The simulation results illustrate that the photovoltaics grid-connected order determined by this method based on PGOD can effectively analyze the voltage impact of large-scale photovoltaics grid-connected,and explore the internal factors and characteristics of the impact. 展开更多

To effectively quantify the impact of distributed photovoltaic(PV)access on the distribution network,this paper proposes a comprehensive evaluation method of distributed PV grid connection combining subjective and objective combination of assignment and technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution(TOPSIS)—rank sum ratio(RSR)(TOPSIS-RSR)method.Based on the traditional distribution network evaluation system,a comprehensive evaluation system has been constructed.It fully considers the new development requirements of distributed PV access on the environmental friendliness and absorptive capacity of the distribution grid and comprehensively reflects the impact of distributed PV grid connection.The analytic hierarchy process(AHP)was used to determine the subjective weights of the primary indicators,and the Spearman consistency test was combined to determine the weights of the secondary indicators based on three objective assignment methods.The subjective and objective combination weights of each assessment indicator were calculated through the principle of minimum entropy.Calculate the distance between the indicators to be evaluated and the positive and negative ideal solutions,the relative closeness ranking,and qualitative binning by TOPSIS-RSR method to obtain the comprehensive evaluation results of different scenarios.By setting up different PV grid-connected scenarios and utilizing the IEEE33 node simulation algorithm,the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed subject-object combination assignment and integrated assessment method are verified. 展开更多

Obvious resonance peak will be generated when parallel photovoltaic grid-connected inverters are connected to the weak grid with high grid impedance, which seriously affects the stability of grid-connected operation of the photovoltaic system. To overcome the problems mentioned above, the mathematical model of the parallel photovoltaic inverters is established. Several factors including the impact of the reference current of the grid-connected inverter, the grid voltage interference and the current disturbance between the photovoltaic inverters in parallel with the grid-connected inverters are analyzed. The grid impedance and the LCL filter of the photovoltaic inverter system are found to be the key elements which lead to existence of resonance peak. This paper presents the branch voltage and current double feedback suppression method under the premise of not changing the topological structure of the photovoltaic inverter, which effectively handles the resonance peak, weakens the harmonic content of the grid current of the photovoltaic grid-connected inverter and the voltage at the point of common coupling, and improves the stability of the parallel operation of the photovoltaic grid-connected inverters in weak grid. At last, the simulation model is established to verify the reliability of this suppression method. 展开更多

In this paper, an Equivalence Method based on the Output Characteristics (EMOC) is proposed, with which the wind farm composed of Squirrel-Cage Induction Generators (SCIGs) can be equivalent to one generator. By considering the diversity of wind generators and special operating characteristics of a wind farm, the equivalent generator based on EMOC responds accurately in various faults. No matter whether the wind farm is integrated in grid or just programmed, EMOC can be used to acquire an accurate equivalent generator. Simulation of the dynamic equivalence of an SCIG wind farm validated the method. 展开更多

In wind power generation system the grid-connected inverter is an important section for energy conversion and transmission, of which the performance has a direct influence on the entire wind power generation system. The mathematical model of the grid-connected inverter is deduced firstly. Then, the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is analyzed. The power factor can be controlled close to unity, leading or lagging, which is realized based on H-type current controller and grid voltage vector-oriented control. The control strategy is verified by the simulation and experimental results with a good sinusoidal current, a small harmonic component and a fast dynamic response. 展开更多

The author has obtained satisfactory results using this new MPPT control method. This paper investigates the application of the new MPPT control method for a PCS (power conditioning system) in a grid-connected type PV power generation system. A control strategy of sine-sine pulse width modulation (PWM) is studied. Compared with the traditional current-source inverter, the power frequency inductors and power frequency transformer are replaced with high frequency inductors and a high frequency transformer. Thus, the proposed inverter has advantages of small volume, low cost, low total harmonic distortion (THD), low power losses, high power factor (PF) and simple control. Furthermore, grid voltage cannot influence output current of the grid-connected inverter and the current-source inverter with a high PF that approaches one has been realized. Finally, validity of the theory analysis and feasibility of the control scheme are shown by simulation and experimental results. 展开更多

For multiple grid-connected inverters with active filter function,it makes sense to regulate every unit to output maximum active power from photovoltaic arrays,as well as eliminate the harmonic due to the non-linear loads connected to the electric networks.Naturally,a centralized control coordination strategy was proposed for the purpose of high facility utilization,good harmonic compensation ability and unwanted overcompensation condition.Based on a vector decoupling control scheme and generalized instantaneous reactive power theory,the solution was to allocate the harmonic eliminating task for every inverter according to the instantaneous power margin of each.The grid current always keeps sinusoidal in spite of non-linear load change and output active power change for any inverter.The simulation results validate the efficacy of the proposed coordination strategy. 展开更多

In this paper, an optimized model is proposed to find the best values for decision variables to optimize the grid connected hybrid renewable energy system which consists of photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and battery bank for electrification to North-east region of Afghanistan to meet winter power shortages of the area. In the proposed model, there are three decision variables namely, the total area occupied by the set of PV panels, total swept area by the rotating turbines' blades, and the number of batteries. GA (genetic algorithm) is defined to find the optimal values of the decision variables. The objective of this research is to minimize the LCC (life cycle cost) of the hybrid renewable energy system, and ensuring at the same time systems reliability level which is measured in terms of LPSP (loss of power supply probability). 展开更多

An advanced nonlinear robust control scheme is proposed for multi-machine power systems equipped with thyristor-controlled series compensation (TCSC). First, a decentralized nonlinear robust control approach based on the feedback linearization and H∞ theory is introduced to eliminate the nonlinearities and interconnections of the studied system, and to attenuate the exogenous disturbances that enter die system. Then, a system model is built up, which has considered all the generators’ and TCSC’s dynamics, and the effects of uncertainties such as disturbances. Next, a decentralized nonlinear robust coordinated control law is developed based on this model. Simulation results on a six-machine power system show that the transient stability of the power system is obviously improved and die power transfer capacity of long distance transmission lines is enhanced regardless of fault locations and system operation points. Modeling method for the current control loop of a grid-connected PWM inverter with the LCL output filter was discussed.Firstly,the current control loop with the LCL inverter-side current as feedback was established.Then,parameters of PI controller were calculated on the basis of an equivalent controlled object.Finally,Norton equivalent circuit for the current control loop of grid-connected system was derived by integrating one control equation,which connected the PWM inverter output voltage and the LCL inverter-side current,with two circuit equations,separately using the LCL inverter-side current and the injected current as loop currents.With the induced Norton equivalent circuit,system-level resonant and unstable issues on real grid-connected system applied in weak distributed power systems can be easily analyzed.The validity of substituting Norton equivalent circuit for grid-connected system is verified by simulation and experiment. 展开更多

To realize the efficient transient simulation of a grid-connected power generation system based on multiple inverters, this paper proposes a hybrid simulation method integrating the models of electromagnetic transient and dynamic phasors. Based on a demonstration of the concepts and properties of dynamic phasors, the models of single-phase and three-phase inverters described by dynamic phasors are established first. Considering the numerical compatibility problem between dynamic phasors and instantaneous values, an interface scheme between dynamic phasors and instantaneous values is designed, and the efficiency and precision differences of various transformation methods are compared in detail.Finally, by utilizing MATLAB/Simulink, a hybrid simulation platform of a multi-inverter grid-connected system is built, and the efficiency and accuracy of the hybrid simulation are validated via comparison with the full electromagnetic transient simulation. 展开更多

Nowadays,the single state inverter for the grid-connected photovoltaic(PV)systems is becoming more and more popular as they can reduce circuit complexity resulting in less power losses of the inverter.This paper focuses on the use of model predictive control(MPC)to control a 3-phase and 2-level single-state grid-connected inverter in order to regulate the PV maximum power point(MPP).The algorithm of MPC scheme was done to measure the simultaneous current signal including predicting the next sampling current flow.The reference current(Id∗)was used to control the distribution of electrical power from the solar cell to the grid.To be able to control the maximum power point tracking(MPPT)when the sunlight suddenly changes,so that a developing MPPT based on estimation current perturbation and observation(ECP&O-MPPT)technique was used to control the reference current.This concept was experimented by using MATLAB/Simulink software package.The proposed technique was tested and compared with the old technique.The simulation results showed that the developed MPPT technique can track the MPP faster when the light changes rapidly under 1,000W/m2,25℃ standard climatic conditions.The MPPT time was 0.015 s.The total harmonic distortion(THD)was 2.17%and the power factor was 1. 展开更多
