This review explores multi-directional functionally graded(MDFG)nanostructures,focusing on their material characteristics,modeling approaches,and mechanical behavior.It starts by classifying different types of functionally graded(FG)materials such as conventional,axial,bi-directional,and tri-directional,and the material distribution models like power-law,exponential,trigonometric,polynomial functions,etc.It also discusses the application of advanced size-dependent theories like Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity,nonlocal strain gradient,modified couple stress,and consistent couple stress theories,which are essential to predict the behavior of structures at small scales.The review covers the mechanical analysis of MDFG nanostructures in nanobeams,nanopipes,nanoplates,and nanoshells and their dynamic and static responses under different loading conditions.The effect of multi-directional material gradation on stiffness,stability and vibration is discussed.Moreover,the review highlights the need for more advanced analytical,semi-analytical,and numerical methods to solve the complex vibration problems ofMDFG nanostructures.It is evident that the continued development of these methods is crucial for the design,optimization,and real-world application of MDFG nanostructures in advanced engineering fields like aerospace,biomedicine,and micro/nanoelectromechanical systems(MEMS/NEMS).This study is a reference for researchers and engineers working in the domain of MDFG nanostructures. 展开更多

Coarse grain non-uniform refinement simulation in multi-directional forging of titanium alloys based on macro-deformation and crystal plasticity modelling

The complex grain fragmentation mechanisms of coarse grains in titanium alloys under multi-directional forging(MDF)directly influence the optimization and control of primary hot working processes.This study conducted MDF experiments onβ-phase as-cast Ti-6554 alloy and simulated non-uniform deformation during cyclic multi-directional compression through macro-and micro-deformation modeling.The results revealed that friction and surface cooling caused low strain and tensile stress concentration at billet edges,leading to mixed grain structures.In contrast,high strain and triaxial compressive stress at billet centers facilitated uniform grain refinement.After 14 compressions and 4 intermediate reheating processes,coarse grains of the billet were refined from 2-5 mm to 0.25-0.50 mm,achieving uniform grain sizes across different regions.For the first time,the orientation evolution of grains with different morphologies during multi-directional compressions was visualized microscopically.Columnar grains were found to be more easily subdivided than equiaxed grains due to local strain accumulation.Under cumulative compressions,grain orientations gradually rotated from uniform to random,driving continuous dynamic recrystallization(CDRX).Slip system interactions and concentrated misorientation led to the formation and extension of transition and shear bands,inducing grain fragmentation dominated by transgranular subdivided CDRX.Smooth grain boundaries transformed into serrated ones after multiple passes,providing additional nucleation sites for discontinuous dynamic recrystallization(DDRX)and facilitating boundary expand CDRX.The interaction of diverse DRX mechanisms was the fundamental cause of grain refinement.This study clarified the principles of refining and homogenizing millimeter-grade coarse grains under increasing forging strain,offering valuable insights for the development of primary hot processing techniques for as-castβtitanium alloys. 展开更多

The homogenized Mg−5.6Gd−0.8Zn(wt.%)alloys were treated with water cooling and furnace cooling to obtain specimens without and with the 14H long-period stacking ordered(LPSO)phase.Subsequently,multi-directional forging(MDF)experiments were carried out.The microstructure and mechanical properties of different regions(the center,middle and edge regions)in the MDFed alloys were systematically investigated,and the effect of LPSO phase on them was discussed.The results show that the alloys in different regions undergo significant grain refinement during the MDF process.Inhomogeneous microstructures with different degrees of dynamic recrystallization(DRX)are formed,resulting in microhardness heterogeneity.The alloy with the LPSO phase has higher microstructure homogeneity,a higher degree of recrystallization,and better comprehensive mechanical properties than the alloy without the LPSO phase.The furnace-cooled alloy after 18 passes of MDF has the best comprehensive mechanical properties,with an ultimate compressive strength of 488 MPa,yield strength of 258 MPa,and fracture strain of 21.2%.DRX behavior is closely related to the LPSO phase and deformation temperature.The kinked LPSO phase can act as a potential nucleation site for DRX grains,while the fragmented LPSO phase promotes DRX nucleation through the particle-stimulated nucleation mechanism. 展开更多

The superplasticity of the Mg−8.59Gd−3.85Y−1.14Zn−0.49Zr alloy was investigated before and after multi-directional forging(MDF)and the mechanisms affecting superplastic deformation were analyzed.The results indicate that after MDF at a temperature of 350℃and strain rates of 0.1 and 0.01 s^(−1)(1-MDFed and 2-MDFed),the superplasticity of the alloy can be significantly improved.The elongations of the MDFed alloys exceed 400%under the strain rate of 6.06×10^(−4)s^(−1)and temperatures of 350,375,and 400℃,and reach the maximum values of 766%(1-MDFed)and 693%(2-MDFed)at 375℃.The grain boundary sliding of the MDFed alloy is sufficient,and the energy barrier of deformation decreases.Theβphase limits the grain growth and promotes dynamic recrystallization,maintaining the stability of the fine-grained structure during superplastic deformation.Several Y-rich phases nucleate in the high-strain region(i.e.,the final fracture region)at high temperatures,accelerating the fracture of the specimen. 展开更多

The metamaterial based on external meshing gears(MEG)is designed based on the principle of external meshing gear transmission.Based on the meshing transmission principle of external meshing gears and planetary gear trains,the internal and external gear rings are designed.Based on the internal and external gear rings,the metamaterial based on inner and outer planetary gear trains(MIP)is designed to study the shear modulus,Young's modulus,and amplitude-frequency characteristics of the metamaterial based on gears at different angles.The effects of the number of planetary gears on the physical characteristics of the MIP are studied.The results show that the MEG can be continuously adjusted by adjusting the shear modulus and Young's modulus due to its meshing characteristics.With the same number of gears,the adjustment range of the MIP is larger than the adjustment range of the MEG.When the number of planetary gears increases,the adjustment range of the MIP decreases.Moreover,when the metamaterial based on gears rotates,the harmonic response changes with the change of the angle. 展开更多

Adjustable random linear network coding(ARLNC): A solution for data transmission in dynamic IoT computational environments

In mobile computing environments, most IoT devices connected to networks experience variable error rates and possess limited bandwidth. The conventional method of retransmitting lost information during transmission, commonly used in data transmission protocols, increases transmission delay and consumes excessive bandwidth. To overcome this issue, forward error correction techniques, e.g., Random Linear Network Coding(RLNC) can be used in data transmission. The primary challenge in RLNC-based methodologies is sustaining a consistent coding ratio during data transmission, leading to notable bandwidth usage and transmission delay in dynamic network conditions. Therefore, this study proposes a new block-based RLNC strategy known as Adjustable RLNC(ARLNC), which dynamically adjusts the coding ratio and transmission window during runtime based on the estimated network error rate calculated via receiver feedback. The calculations in this approach are performed using a Galois field with the order of 256. Furthermore, we assessed ARLNC's performance by subjecting it to various error models such as Gilbert Elliott, exponential, and constant rates and compared it with the standard RLNC. The results show that dynamically adjusting the coding ratio and transmission window size based on network conditions significantly enhances network throughput and reduces total transmission delay in most scenarios. In contrast to the conventional RLNC method employing a fixed coding ratio, the presented approach has demonstrated significant enhancements, resulting in a 73% decrease in transmission delay and a 4 times augmentation in throughput. However, in dynamic computational environments, ARLNC generally incurs higher computational costs than the standard RLNC but excels in high-performance networks. 展开更多

The electricity-hydrogen integrated energy system(EH-IES)enables synergistic operation of electricity,heat,and hydrogen subsystems,supporting renewable energy integration and efficient multi-energy utilization in future low carbon societies.However,uncertainties from renewable energy and load variability threaten system safety and economy.Conventional chance-constrained programming(CCP)ensures reliable operation by limiting risk.However,increasing source-load uncertainties that can render CCP models infeasible and exacerbate operational risks.To address this,this paper proposes a risk-adjustable chance-constrained goal programming(RACCGP)model,integrating CCP and goal programming to balance risk and cost based on system risk assessment.An intelligent nonlinear goal programming method based on the state transition algorithm(STA)is developed,along with an improved discretized step transformation,to handle model nonlinearity and enhance computational efficiency.Experimental results show that the proposed model reduces costs while controlling risk compared to traditional CCP,and the solution method outperforms average sample sampling in efficiency and solution quality. 展开更多

The effect of forging passes on the refinement of high purity aluminum during multi-forging was investigated. The attention was focused on the structure uniformity due to deformation uniformity and the grain refinement limitation with very high strains. The results show that the fine grain zone in the center of sample expands gradually with the increase of forging passes. When the forging passes reach 6, an X-shape fine grain zone is initially formed. With a further increase of the passes, this X-shape zone tends to spread the whole sample. Limitation in the structural refinement is observed with increasing strains during multi-forging process at the room temperature. The grains size in the center is refined to a certain size (110 μm as forging passes reach 12, and there is no further grain refinement in the center with increasing the forging passes to 24. However, the size of the coarse grains near the surface is continuously decreased with increasing the forging passes to 24. 展开更多

In this study,the Mg-7Gd-5Y-1Nd-0.5Zr alloy can reach a high ductility by the process of multi-directional forging,and the evolution of the microstructure,texture and the mechanical properties were discussed systematically.The results show that after the solutionized sample was multi-forged at 500℃,its grain size can be refined from 292 um to 58 um.As the forging temperature decreased,fine particles precipitated in the matrix.The volume fraction of the particles increased with the forging temperature decreasing,so the nucleation and growth of crystallization were strongly restricted.There was no recrystallization as the forging temperature fell to 410℃,and the severe deformed grains distributed as streamlines perpendicular to the final compression axis.The texture intensity decreased with increasing forging passes.The sample with best ductility was obtained after compressed at 470℃,with an elongation to failure of 21%at room temperature,which is increased by 200%,in comparison with that of the samples in solutionized condition.EBSD results revealed that the mean grain size was 15 um.Refined grains as well as the weakened texture were the key factors to its high ductility. 展开更多

The increasingly complex battlefield environment requests much closer connection in a team having both manned and unmanned aerial vehicles(MAVs and UAVs). This special heterogeneous team structure causes demands for effective organizational structure design solutions. Implementing adjustable autonomy in the organizational structure, the expected evaluation function is established based on the physical resource, intelligent resource, network efficiency, network vulnerability and task execution reliability. According to the above constraints, together with interaction latency, decision-making information processing capacity, and decision-making latency, we aim to find a preferential organizational structure. The proposed organizational structure includes cooperative relationships, supervisory control relationships, and decision-making authorization relationships. In addition,by considering the influence on the intelligent support capabilities and the task execution reliability created by adjustable autonomy, it helps to build the proposed organizational structure designed with certain degree of flexibility to deal with the potential changes in the unpredictable battlefield environment. Simulation is conducted to confirm our design to be valid. And the method is still valid under different battlefield environments and interventions. 展开更多

An adjustable entropy function method is given to deal with the proposed optimization problem and the Newton algorithm is used to figure out the optimal solution. The proposed method can find an optimal solution with a relatively small parameter p, which avoids the numerical overflow in the traditional entropy function methods. Multi-direction impact forging(MDIF)was applied to the as-extruded ZK60 Mg alloy,and the microstructure,texture evolution and yield strength symmetry were investigated in the current study.The results showed that the average grain size of forged piece was greatly refined to 5.3μm after 120 forging passes,which was ascribed to the segmenting effect of{10–12}twins and the subsequent multiple rounds of dynamic recrystallization(DRX).A great deal of{10–12}twins were activated at the beginning of MDIF process,which played an important role in grain refinement.With forging proceeding,continuous and discontinuous DRX were successively activated,resulting in the fully DRXed microstructure.Meanwhile,the forged piece exhibited a unique four-peak texture,and the initial<10-10>//ED fiber texture component gradually evolved into multiple texture components composed of<0001>//FFD(first forging direction)and<11–20>//FFD texture.The special strain path was the key to the formation of the unique four-peak texture.The{10–12}twinning and basal slip were two dominant factors to the evolution of texture during MDIF process.Grain strengthening and dislocation strengthening were two main strengthening mechanisms of the forged piece.Besides,the symmetry of yield strength was greatly improved by MDIF process. 展开更多

A new type of velocity adjustable tuned mass damper (TMD) consisting of impulse generators and clutches is presented. The force impulse is generated by a joining operation of electromagnets and springs and MR dampers are used as clutches. Rules for velocity adjustment are established according to the working mechanism of TMD. The analysis program is developed on a VB platform. Seismic response of SDOF structures with both passive TMD and velocity adjustable TMD are analyzed. The results show that (l) the control effectiveness of passive TMDs is usually unstable; (2) the control effectiveness of the proposed semi-active TMDs is much better than passive TMDs under typical seismic ground motions; and (3) unlike the passive TMD system, the proposed velocity adjustable TMDs exhibit good control effectiveness even when the primary structure performance becomes inelastic during severe earthquakes. 展开更多

This work discusses tribological properties of commercial pure (CP) titanium processed by multi-directional forging (MDF) up to six passes at room temperature and 220 ℃. For this purpose, wear test was conducted by dry sliding pin-on-disk method on the initial and ultrafine grained samples using different stress magnitudes of 1, 1.5 and 2 MPa. The results showed that wear resistance of CP titanium increases after the first pass of MDF in comparison with the initial condition, irrespective of the applied normal stress. For example, the average wear rate of MDFed samples was decreased about 30% and 24%, after first pass at room temperature and 220 ℃, respectively. However, average wear rate of the samples processed by six MDF passes was reduced about 40% at lower normal loads;it was increased about 9% at higher ones as compared to the initial condition. It was also found that the dominated wear mechanisms were abrasive and delaminated at the lower stresses, while the delamination mechanism was intensified and a slight adhesion was observed during the higher applied normal loads. 展开更多

A 45-year-old man of Middle Eastern origin, morbid obese, with a body mass index of 39 had an intragastric balloon, filled with 500 mL of saline/methylene blue and intended as definite therapy, inserted some8 wk previously. He was admitted to the emergency department with abdominal cramps. An ultrasound of the abdomen was performed in ER which confirmed the balloon to be in place without any abnormality.He was discharged home on symptomatic medication.Patient remains symptomatic therefore he reported back to ER 2 d later. Computed tomography scan was performed this time for further evaluation which revealed a metallic ring present in the small bowel while the intra-gastric balloon was in its proper position.There was no clinical or radiological sign of intestinal obstruction. Patient was hospitalized for observation and conservative management. The following night,patient experienced sudden and severe abdominal pain, therefore an X-ray of the abdomen in erect position was done, which showed free air under the right dome of diaphragm. Patient was transferred to O.R for emergency laparotomy. There were two small perforations identified at the site of the metallic ring entrapment. The ring was removed and the perforations were repaired. Due to increasing prevalence of obesity and advances in modalities for its management,physicians should be aware of treatment options, their benefits, complications and clinical presentation of the known complications. Physicians need to be updated to approach these complications within time, to avoid lifethreatening situations caused by these appliances. 展开更多

Effect of multi-directional forging(MDF)on wear properties of Mg-Zn alloys(with 2,4,and 6wt%Zn)is investigated.Dry sliding wear test was performed using pin on disk machine on MDF processed and homogenized samples.Wear behavior of samples was analyzed at loads of ION and 20 N,with sliding distances of 2000m and 4000m,at a sliding velocity of 3m/s.Microstructures of worn samples were observed under scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS),and x-ray diffraction(XRD)and the results were analyzed.Mechanical properties were evaluated using microhardness test.After 5 passes of MDF,the average grain size was found to be 30±4p m,22±3 pm,and 18±3 pm,in Mg-2%Zn,Mg-4%Zn,and Mg-6%Zn alloys,respectively,with significant improvement in hardness in all cases.Wear resistance was improved after MDF processing,as well as,with increment in Zn content in Mg alloy.However,it decreased when the load and the sliding distance increased.Worn surface exhibited ploughing,delamination,plastic deformation,and wear debris along sliding direction,and abrasive wear was found to be the main mechanism. 展开更多
