With the development of urban infrastructure,it is inevitable that shield tunnels will undercross intercity railways. However, the safe operation of intercity railways requires strict subgrade deformation. On the basis of the engineering background of the Lianghu Tunnel in Wuhan, the three-dimensional centrifuge test and numerical back analysis were used to study the development of subgrade surface settlement during shield tunneling.A three-dimensional numerical model with the same size as the prototype was subsequently established to further study the settlement development and torsion behavior of the subgrade during tunnel excavation. The results show that the maximum settlement point of the transverse settlement trough gradually moves to the tunnel axis during tunnel excavation and that the entire subgrade experiences torsional deformation. Moreover, the effect of the intersection angle between the axes of the tunnel and the subgrade on the surface settlement of the subgrade was further studied. The results show that the intersection angle has no effect on the maximum settlement, but the width of the settlement trough increases gradually with increasing angle. Finally,on the basis of the soil arching effect caused by tunnel excavation, the subgrade settlement during tunnel excavation is reduced by reinforcing the soil in different zones of soil arching. The results show that the settlement of the subgrade caused by the shield tunnel can be effectively controlled by adding reinforcement directly to the top of the tunnel, and the maximum settlement of the subgrade surface is reduced from 24.41 mm to 9.47 mm,a reduction of approximately 61.2%. 展开更多

A full-scale research study was conducted during the bored tunnelling of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit-Putrajaya Line beneath an existing building structure in Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia. The primary objective was to investigate the tunnel-soil-pile interaction at various stages of tunnel excavation. This study combined field measurements and three-dimensional(3D)numerical analysis to understand the transient effects of TBM tunnelling on a loaded pile.An experimental pile was instrumented with vibrating wire strain gauges,an inclinometer, and distributed fibre optic sensors using Brillouin optical time domain analysis. The pile was pre-loaded and continuously monitored in real-time throughout the tunnel construction process. The 3D finite element modelling was used to simulate the pile’s transient responses based on actual tunnel boring machine(TBM)driving data. The study revealed that the zone of influence due to tunnelling effects extended from y¼2D to y¼4D,with the peak effect observed at y¼1D to 1.5D,where D represents the tunnel diameter. The analysis of axial load patterns highlighted transient responses, including tensile loads below the tunnel invert, which propagated upward and subsided due to negative skin friction. The maximum downdrag load observed reached 56%e71%of the pile’s working load.Additionally, pile movement patterns indicated outward deflections as the TBM approached and a return toward the tunnel post-passage,aligning with the predicted behaviour in a negative face loss scenario. This validated numerical framework provides a solid foundation for further parametric studies and enhances the understanding of tunnel-soil-pile interactions. 展开更多

This study presents a numerical analysis of the effects of a rigid flat wall with oscillating motion on the pressure wave propagation during a single spherical cavitation bubble collapse at different initial bubble positions.Different nondimensional distances S=0.8,0.9,1.0,1.1,1.2 and 1.3 were considered to investigate the effects of initial in-phase and out-of-phase oscillations of the flat wall.Numerical simulations of cavitation bubble collapse near an oscillating wall were conducted using a compressible two-phase flow model. This model incorporated the Volume of Fluid(VOF)interface-sharpening technique on a general curvilinear moving grid. The numerical results were consistent with published experimental data. The simulation examined the impact of oscillating walls on bubble behavior and the resulting pressure peaks observed on the wall surface. The numerical results demonstrate the significant impact of wall oscillation conditions on bubble collapse and migration behavior, and consequently, the generation of pressure waves with significantly different propagation and pressure peaks induced by shock impact on the rigid wall.Different behaviors were observed in the trendlines of the pressure peaks and maximum jet velocity under in-phase and out-of-phase oscillating walls, with distinct values. At S≥1.0,a higher-pressure peak on the wall was observed in the case of the out-of-phase oscillating condition, whereas a higher-pressure peak was found in the case of the in-phase condition at S<1.0.The highest-pressure peak was found at S=0.8 in trend lines of in-phase and S=1.1 in trend lines of out-of-phase oscillation effects. 展开更多

According to the innate characteristic of four types of furnace, the copper flash continuous smelting (CFCS) furnace can be considered a synthetic reactor of two relatively independent processes: flash matte smelting process (FMSP) and copper continuous converting process (CCCP). Then, the CFCS thermodynamic model was proposed by establishing the multi-phase equilibrium model of FMSP and the local-equilibrium model of CCCP, respectively, and by combining them through the smelting intermediates. Subsequently, the influences of the furnace structures were investigated using the model on the formation of blister copper, the Fe3O4 behavior, the copper loss in slag and the copper recovery rate. The results show that the type D furnace, with double flues and a slag partition wall, is an ideal CFCS reactor compared with the other three types furnaces. For CFCS, it is effective to design a partition wall in the furnace to make FMSP and CCCP perform in two relatively independent zones, respectively, and to make smelting gas and converting gas discharge from respective flues. 展开更多

The cut-off wall in a clay-core rockfill dam built on a thick overburden layer is subjected to a large compressive pressure under the action of the loads such as the dead weight of both the dam and the overburden layer, the frictional force induced by the differential settlement between the cut-off wall and surrounding soils, and the water pressure. Thus, reduction of the stress of the cut-off wall has become one of the main problems for consideration in engineering design. In this paper, numerical analysis of a core rockfill dam built on a thick overburden layer was conducted and some factors influencing the stress-strain behaviors of the cut-off wall were investigated. The factors include the improvement of the overburden layer, the modeling approach for interfacial contact between the cut-off wall and surrounding soils, the modulus of the cut-off wall concrete, and the connected pattern between the cut-off wall and the clay core. The result shows that improving the overburden layer, selecting plastic concrete with a low modulus and high strength, and optimizing the connection between the cut-off wall and the clay core of the dam are effective measures of reducing the deformations and compressive stresses of the cut-off wall. In addition, both the Goodman element and the mud-layer element are suitable for simulating the interfacial contact between the cut-off wall and surrounding soils. 展开更多

A dry-gas seal system is a non-contact seal technology that is widely used in different industrial applications.Spiral-groove dry-gas seal utilizes fluid dynamic pressure effects to realize the seal and lubrication processes, while forming a high pressure gas film between two sealing faces due to the deceleration of the gas pumped in or out. There is little research into the effects and the influence on seal performance,if the grooves and the gas film are at the micro-scale.This paper investigates the micro-scale effects on spiral-groove dry-gas seal performance in a numerical solution of a corrected Reynolds equation. The Reynolds equation is discretized by means of the finite difference method with the second order scheme and solved by the successive-over-relaxation(SOR) iterative method. The Knudsen number of the flow in the sealing gas film is changed from 0.005 to 0.120 with a variation of film depth and sealing pressure. The numerical results show that the average pressure in the gas film and the sealed gas leakage increase due to micro-scale effects. The open force is enlarged, while the gas film stiffness is significantly decreased due to micro-scale effects. The friction torque and power consumption remain constant, even in low sealing pressure and spin speed conditions. In this paper, the seal performance at different rotor face spin speeds is also described. The proposed research clarifies the micro-scale effects in a spiral-groove dry-gas seal and their influence on seal performance, which is expected to be useful for the improvement of the design of dry-gas seal systems operating in the slip flow regime. 展开更多

The Westwood Mine aims to reuse the tailings storage facility #1(TSF #1) for solid waste storage, but, downstream of the Northwest dike is considered critical in terms of stability. This paper uses numerical modeling along with geophysical monitoring for assessing the Northwest dike stability during the restoration phase. The impact of waste rock deposition in the upstream TSF #1 is considered. The geophysical monitoring is based on electrical resistivity methods and was used to investigate the internal structure of the dike embankment in different deposition stages. The numerical simulations were performed with SLOPE/W code. The results show a factor of safety well above the minimum recommended value of 1.5. Geophysical monitoring revealed a vertical variation in the electrical resistivity across the dike, which indicates a multilayer structure of the embankment. Without any current in situ data, the geophysical monitoring helped estimating the nature of the materials used and the internal structure of the embankment. These interpretations were validated by geological observation of geotechnical log of the embankment. Based on this study, it is recommended that the water polishing pond be partly filled before waste rock is deposited in TSF #1. In addition, to ensure the stability of the dike, the piezometric head monitoring prior to and during waste rock deposition is recommended. 展开更多

In a continuous casting process, it is essential to prevent the surface defects which are caused by the mold powder entrapments. It is well known that the decrease in the molten steel flow velocity just under the free surface is one of the most effective methods for the prevention of mold powder entrapments. For this purpose, the electro-magnetic level stabilizer (EMLS) has been developed, which is applied to a low frequency alternating magnetic field moving from the narrow face of the mold to the mold center below the nozzle exits. In this study, the effect of the EMLS on the molten steel flow is investigated. Numerical simulation of the electromagnetic field and the molten steel flow in a mold were carried out. Simulation results indicate that, due to the electromagnetic force, the molten steel is forced to flow toward the magnetic field traveling direction in the region where the magnetic field is imposed. The molten steel flow is decelerated in proportion to the imposed electromagnetic force. Consequently, the molten steel flows toward the mold center near the free surface with a smaller imposed electromagnetic force, and it flows toward the nozzle at the nozzle side and toward the narrow face at the narrow face side with a larger imposed electromagnetic force. However, the magnitude of the electromagnetic force is decided by the current intensity and frequency, a suitable imposed electric current can be chosen to minimize the flow velocity and also the amount of mold powder entrapments. 展开更多

Tunnelling related hazards are very common in the Himalayan terrain and a number of such instances have been reported. Several twin tunnels are being planned for transportation purposes which will require good understanding for prediction of tunnel deformation and surface settlement during the engineering life of the structure. The deformational behaviour, design of sequential excavation and support of any jointed rock mass are challenging during underground construction. We have raised several commonly assumed issues while performing stability analysis of underground opening at shallow depth. For this purpose, Kainchi-mod Nerchowck twin tunnels(Himachal Pradesh, India) are taken for in-depth analysis of the stability of two asymmetric tunnels to address the influence of topography, twin tunnel dimension and geometry. The host rock encountered during excavation is composed mainly of moderately to highly jointed grey sandstone, maroon sandstone and siltstones. In contrast to equidimensional tunnels where the maximum subsidence is observed vertically above the centreline of the tunnel, the result from the present study shows shifting of the maximum subsidence away from the tunnel centreline. The maximum subsidence of 0.99 mm is observed at 4.54 m left to the escape tunnel centreline whereas the maximum subsidence of 3.14 mm is observed at 8.89 m right to the main tunnel centreline. This shifting clearly indicates the influence of undulating topography and inequidimensional noncircular tunnel. 展开更多

The significant point is the bidirectional interaction technique in FSI analysis while investigating subsea corrosion effect. By this way, pipe environment is accurately modelled and fluid effects are also considered. The effect of external corrosion defects on structural behaviour of a pipeline is studied by creating a nonlinear numerical model based on the finite element method according to ABAQUS analysis program. Corrosion losses of sections are obtained from experimental results and applied to the model. Numerical model is formed by a span of sub-sea pipeline that is subjected to environmental loads. Seismic and wind-generated irregular wave loads are considered as environmental loads. Irregular wave is represented with equivalent eight regular waves via FFT. The pipe is modelled according to two different types which are non-corroded(intact) and corroded(deteriorated) to demonstrate corrosion effects on it. The visible type of corrosion in marine environment is named ‘pitting' corrosion, in which the material loss is locally interpenetrated over the surface. By considering this situation, the corroded and non-corroded pipes are modelled as 3D solid elements. The main point is revealing how the subsea corrosion affects the structural behaviour of pipelines on the basis of implementation of experimental results to a model structure due to changes of stresses and displacement. 展开更多

Numerical analysis is an effective tool to research the industrial Czochralski (CZ) crystal growth aiming to improve crystal quality and reduce manufactur- ing costs. In this study, a set of global simulations were carried out to investigate the effect of crystal-crucible rotation and pulling rate on melt convection and solid- liquid (SL) interface shape. Through analyses of the sim- ulation data, it is found that the interface deformation and inherent stress increase during the crystal growth process. The interface deflection increases from 7.4 to 51.3 mm with an increase in crystal size from 150 to 400 mm. In addition, the SL interface shape and flow pattern are sen- sitive to pulling rate and rotation rate. Reducing pulling rate can flat SL interface shape and add energy-consuming. Interface with low deflection can be achieved by adopting certain combination of crystal and crucible rotation rates. The effect of crystal rotation on SL interface shape is less significant at higher crucible rotation rates. 展开更多

Based on the Tropical Cyclone(TC briefly thereafter)Yearbook 1980-2009,this paper first analyzes the number and intensity change of the TCs which passed directly over or by the side of Poyang Lake(the distance of TC center is less than 1°longitude or 1°latitude from the Lake)among all the landfalling TCs in China during the past 30 years. Two cases are examined in detail in this paper. One is severe typhoon Rananim with a speed of 3.26 m/s and a change of 1 hPa in intensity when it was passing the Lake. The other is super typhoon Saomai with a faster moving speed of 6.50 m/s and a larger change in intensity of 6 hPa.Through numerical simulation experiments, this paper analyzes how the change of underlying surface from water to land contributes to the differences in intensity, speed and mesoscale convection of the two TCs when they passed the Lake. Results show that the moisture and dynamic condition above the Lake were favorable for the maintenance of the intensity when Rananim was passing through Poyang Lake, despite the moisture supply from the ocean was cut off.As a result, there was strong convection around the lake which led to a rainfall spinning counter-clockwise as it was affected by the TC movement. However, little impact was seen in the Saomai case. These results indicate that for the TCs coming ashore on Poyang Lake with a slow speed, the large water body is conducive to the sustaining of the intensity and strengthening of the convection around the TC center and the subsequent heavy rainfall. On the contrary,a fast-moving TC is less likely to be influenced by the underlying surface in terms of intensity and speed. 展开更多

In order to investigate the seismic performance of this type of structure, several ground motion accelerations with different levels for seismic intensity Ⅷ, based on the Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings, were selected to excite the model. The results show that the design methods of the members and the connections are adequate and that the structural system will perform well in regions of high seismicity. As the basal group of Polypodiales, the specific taxonomy of Dicksoniaceae is still being debated. As aquantitative analysis method, numerical taxonomy has been applied to the taxonomic study of many plant families andgenera in recent years due to its simplicity and high accuracy. However, the numerical analysis of the Dicksoniaceae fossilshas not been reported at present. In the present study, the pinnule morphological data of 42 Mesozoic fossil species of theDicksoniaceae were analyzed using cluster analysis, principal component analysis and correlation analysis. The resultsrevealed that 42 taxonomic units could be divided into six representative groups, which are consistent with the traditionaltaxonomy. After screening, an identification key on 28 fossil species of four genera with a definite taxonomic position wasestablished. According to the quantitative analysis, a Bayes discriminant model was established for the selected species.Lastly, the model was tested using the morphological data of the fossil pinnules in Dicksoniaceae from the YaojieFormation, suggesting that the discriminant model is accurate to a certain extent. As a result, the numerical taxonomy canbe applied to the classification of the Dicksoniaceae fossils. 展开更多

An adjusting factor is introduced into the expression of arc pressure. The domain within which the arc heat flux is distributed non-symmetrically due to arc moving is selected appropriately, and three conditions for the domain to meet are described. The latent heat is taken into consideration by liquid fraction method. The dynamic development of weld pool geometry during TIG welding is analyzed numerically, and the effect of arc moving on the weld pool geometry is discussed. In this study, rapid drawdown scenarios were analyzed by means of numerical examples as well as modeling of real cases with in situ measurements. The aim of the study was to evaluate different approaches available for calculating pore water pressure distributions during and after a drawdown. To do that, a single slope subjected to a drawdown was first analyzed under different calculation alternatives, and numerical results were discussed. Simple methods, such as undrained analysis and pure flow analysis, implicitly assuming a rigid soil skeleton, lead to significant errors in pore water pressure distributions when compared with coupled flow-deformation analysis. A similar analysis was performed for the upstream slope of the Glen Shira Dam, Scotland, and numerical results were compared with field measurements during a controlled drawdown. Field records indicate that classical undrained calculations are conservative but unrealistic. Then, a recent case of a major landslide triggered by a rapid drawdown in a reservoir was interpreted. A key aspect of the case was the correct characterization of permeability of a representative soil profile. This was achieved by combining laboratory test results and a back analysis of pore water pressure time records during a period of reservoir water level fluctuations. The results highlight the difficulty of predicting whether the pore water pressure is overestimated or underestimated when using simplified approaches, and it is concluded that predicting the pore water pressure distribution in a slope after a rapid drawdown requires a coupled flow-deformation analysis in saturated and unsaturated porous media. 展开更多
