Source process of the 2021 M_(W)6.6 outer rise earthquake off the west coast of northern Sumatra

The complexity of the seismicity pattern for the subduction zone along the oceanic plate triggered the outer rise events and revealed cyclic tectonic deformation conditions along the plate subduction zones.The outer rise earthquakes have been observed along the Sunda arc,following the estimated rupture area of the 2005 M_(W)8.6 Nias earthquakes.Here,we used kinematic waveform inversion(KIWI)to obtain the source parameters of the 14 May 2021 M_(W)6.6 event off the west coast of northern Sumatra and to define the fault plane that triggered this outer rise event.The KIWI algorithm allows two types of seismic source to be configured:the moment tensor model to describe the type of shear with six moment tensor components and the Eikonal model for the rupture of pure double-couple sources.This method was chosen for its flexibility to be applied for different sources of seismicity and also for the automated full-moment tensor solution with real-time monitoring.We used full waveform traces from 8 broadband seismic stations within 1000 km epicentral distances sourced from the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology(IRIS-IDA)and Geofon GFZ seismic record databases.The initial origin time and hypocenter values are obtained from the IRIS-IDA.The synthetic seismograms used in the inversion process are based on the existing regional green function database model and were accessed from the KIWI Tools Green's Function Database.The obtained scalar seismic moment value is 1.18×10^(19)N·m,equivalent to a moment magnitude M_(W)6.6.The source parameters are 140°,44°,and−99°for the strike,dip,and rake values at a centroid depth of 10.2 km,indicating that this event is a normal fault earthquake that occurred in the outer rise area.The outer rise events with normal faults typically occur at the shallow part of the plate,with nodal-plane dips predominantly in the range of 30°-60°on the weak oceanic lithosphere due to hydrothermal alteration.The stress regime around the plate subduction zone varies both temporally and spatially due to the cyclic influences of megathrust earthquakes.Tensional outer rise earthquakes tend to occur after the megathrust events.The relative timing of these events is not known due to the viscous relaxation of the down going slab and poroelastic response in the trench slope region.The occurrence of the 14 May 2021 earthquake shows the seismicity in the outer rise region in the strongly coupled Sunda arc subduction zone due to elastic bending stress within the duration of the seismic cycle. 展开更多

We conducted a field campaign to investigate the chemical composition,sources,and light absorption of submicron aerosols(PM_(1))from early 2022 in Nanjing,China.The average concentration of PM_(1) was 31μg m^(−3),organics(33%)constituted the largest fraction,followed by nitrate(30%),sulfate(18%),ammonium(15%),chloride(3%),and rBC(2%).Four organic aerosol(OA)subcomponents were identified,including two primary OA(POA)and two secondary OA(SOA).The less-oxidized SOA(LO-OOA)contributes the most to the total OA mass(59%).LO-OOA is tightly correlated with the tracer ion C_(2)H_(4)O_(2)^(+)from levoglucosan,and another aged biomass-burning derived species,K_(3)SO_(4)^(+),suggesting it was likely influenced by aged biomass-burning OA.Our study also revealed that fireworks during the Spring Festival have a detrimental impact on air quality,contributing to secondary formation and accumulation under static winter meteorological conditions,prolonging the pollution duration.Also,LO-OOA was found to have the strongest light-absorbing ability.Our results highlight that the light absorption of LO-OOA can mainly be attributed to the C_(x)H_(y)N^(+) family,increased with the double-bond equivalent value.The more-oxidized SOA(MO-OOA)exhibited a negligible light absorption and was strongly correlated with daytime photochemical processes,implying a light-bleaching effect.This study enhances our understanding of the regional contribution of biomass combustion and fireworks to PM_(1) pollution in Nanjing,a typical megacity in the Yangtze River Delta region,during winter,aiding in the development of strategies for long-term air quality improvement in the region. 展开更多

Benefitting from UAVs’characteristics of flexible deployment and controllable movement in 3D space,odor source localization with multiple UAVs has been a hot research area in recent years.Considering the limited resources and insufficient battery capacities of UAVs,it is necessary to fast locate the odor source with low-complexity computation and minimal interaction under complicated environmental states.To this end,we propose a multi-UAV collaboration based odor source localization(MUC-OSL)method,where source estimation and UAV navigation are iteratively performed,aiming to accelerate the searching process and reduce the resource consumption of UAVs.Specifically,in the source estimation phase,we present a collaborative particle filter algorithm on the basis of UAVs’cognitive difference and collaborative information to improve source estimation accuracy.In the following navigation phase,an adaptive path planning algorithm is designed based on partially observable Markov decision process to distributedly determine the subsequent flying direction and moving steps of each UAV.The results of experiments conducted on two simulation platforms demonstrate that MUC-OSL outperforms existing efforts in terms of mean search time and success rate,and effectively reduces the resource consumption of UAVs. 展开更多

Optimization of an m=0 multi-loop helicon source configuration for linear plasma devices:A comparative study with Boswell and half-helix antenna designs

This article presents the physics for determining an appropriate helicon plasma source for the linear experimental advanced device(LEAD)through tripartite mutual verification encompassing theoretical analysis,code simulation,and experimental validation.Using the HELIC code,plasma excitation processes were simulated with three antenna configurations:m=1 half-helix,m=1 Boswell,and m=0 single-loop helicon antennas,and complemented by theoretical analysis.Key parameters including plasma impedance(R_(p))and energy deposition profiles along radial(P_(r))and axial(P_(z))directions were comparatively analyzed,revealing significantly enhanced R_(p),P_(r),and P_(z) values for the loop antenna configuration as compared with other configurations.Wave propagation equation solutions predicted a primary plasma generation layer at the antenna center;numerical simulations identified an additional plasma formation region at the antenna boundary,indicative of edge Landau damping effects.Interestingly,stronger axial magnetic fields do not necessarily result in higher plasma densities,especially for m=0 antenna configurations.Experimental validation conducted with an m=0 multi-loop plasma source confirmed these findings.Both theoretical analyses and experimental studies on large-volume plasma generation utilizing this innovative source elucidated the underlying mechanisms responsible for the remarkable low mode transition threshold of 150-watt input power and demonstrated significantly enhanced plasma confinement properties. 展开更多

Microseismic (MS) source location plays an important role in MS monitoring. This paper proposes a MS source location method based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and multi-sensor arrays, where a free weight joints the P-wave first arrival data. This method adaptively adjusts the preference for “superior” arrays and leverages “inferior” arrays to escape local optima, thereby improving the location accuracy. The effectiveness and stability of this method were validated through synthetic tests, pencil-lead break (PLB) experiments, and mining engineering applications. Specifically, for synthetic tests with 1 μs Gaussian noise and 100 μs large noise in rock samples, the location error of the multi-sensor arrays jointed location method is only 0.30 cm, which improves location accuracy by 97.51% compared to that using a single sensor array. The average location error of PLB events on three surfaces of a rock sample is reduced by 48.95%, 26.40%, and 55.84%, respectively. For mine blast event tests, the average location error of the dual sensor arrays jointed method is 62.74 m, 54.32% and 14.29% lower than that using only sensor arrays 1 and 2, respectively. In summary, the proposed multi-sensor arrays jointed location method demonstrates good noise resistance, stability, and accuracy, providing a compelling new solution for MS location in relevant mining scenarios. 展开更多

Microring resonators(MRRs)are extensively utilized in photonic chips for generating quantum light sources and enabling high-efficiency nonlinear frequency conversion.However,conventional microrings are typically optimized for a single specific function,limiting their versatility in multifunctional applications.In this work,we propose a reconfigurable microring resonator architecture designed to accommodate diverse application requirements.By integrating a cascaded Mach–Zehnder interferometer(MZI)as the microring coupler,the design enables independent control of the quality factors for pump,signal and idler photons through two tunable phase shifters.This capability allows for dynamic tuning and optimization of critical performance parameters,including photon-pair generation rate(PGR),spectral purity and single photon heralding efficiency(HE).The proposed structure is implemented on a silicon photonic chip,and experimental results exhibit a wide range of tunability for these parameters,with excellent agreement with theoretical predictions.This flexible and multi-functional design offers a promising pathway for high-performance,highly integrated on-chip quantum information processing systems. 展开更多

For an improved understanding of gas enrichment mechanism in the eastern Sichuan Basin,South China,twelve natural gas samples were obtained from carbonate reservoirs of the Upper Permian strata to analyze the hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon gas compositions,stable carbon and hydrogen isotopes ratios of hydrocarbons,and noble gas isotope ratios.The gas samples in the Upper Permian reservoirs principally consist of alkane gas with a dryness ratio ranging from 127.9 to 1564.4.The carbon isotope ratio of methane(δ^(13)C_(1))was almost constant at-34.1 to-31.3‰,but the carbon isotope ratio of ethane(δ^(13)C2)varied from-36.6‰to-25.8‰.The hydrogen isotope ratio of methane(δ^2HC_(1))also displayed a wide range from-137‰to-127‰.The large variations in the dryness ratio,δ^(13)C_(2),andδ^2HC_(1)with almost constantδ^(13)C_(1)suggest the mixing of sapropelic and humic origins for hydrocarbon gases in these reservoirs.A high concentration of hydrogen sulfide(H_(2)S)originated from the thermochemical sulfate reduction(TSR),which was positively correlated withδ^(13)C_(1)(orδ^(13)C_(2))in individual gas fields.TSR alteredδ^(13)C_(1)(orδ^(13)C_(2))and resulted in the abnormal character of isotopic reversal in the individual samples.Theδ^(13)C_(1)(orδ^(13)C_(2))in most gas samples,independent of H_(2)S concentration,further displayed reversed carbon isotopes because of the mixture of thermogenic gases with various thermal maturity levels.The measured argon isotope ratio(^(40)Ar/^(36)Ar)varied from 310 to 1225,which suggests that the oldest 320 Ma source rock age corresponds to Permian shales.The analysis of the gas origin and the identification of primary source rock have made a significant contribution to further understanding the resource potential and distribution of natural gas in the Upper Permian,and have great implications for gas exploration in the eastern Sichuan Basin. 展开更多

Passive seismic data contain large amounts of low-frequency information. To effectively extract and compensate active seismic data that lack low frequencies, we propose a multitaper spectral reconstruction method based on multiple sinusoidal tapers and derive equations for multisource and multitrace conditions. Compared to conventional cross correlation and deconvolution reconstruction methods, the proposed method can more accurately reconstruct the relative amplitude of recordings. Multidomain iterative denoising improves the SNR of retrieved data. By analyzing the spectral characteristics of passive data before and after reconstruction, we found that the data are expressed more clearly after reconstruction and denoising. To compensate for the low-frequency information in active data using passive seismic data, we match the power spectrum, supplement it, and then smooth it in the frequency domain. Finally, we use numerical simulation to verify the proposed method and conduct prestack depth migration using data after low-frequency compensation. The proposed power-matching method adds the losing low frequency information in the active seismic data using the low-frequency information of passive- source seismic data. The imaging of compensated data gives a more detailed information of deep structures. 展开更多

The ease of accessing a virtually unlimited pool of resources makes Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds an ideal platform for running data-intensive workflow applications comprising hundreds of computational tasks. However, executing scientific workflows in IaaS cloud environments poses significant challenges due to conflicting objectives, such as minimizing execution time (makespan) and reducing resource utilization costs. This study responds to the increasing need for efficient and adaptable optimization solutions in dynamic and complex environments, which are critical for meeting the evolving demands of modern users and applications. This study presents an innovative multi-objective approach for scheduling scientific workflows in IaaS cloud environments. The proposed algorithm, MOS-MWMC, aims to minimize total execution time (makespan) and resource utilization costs by leveraging key features of virtual machine instances, such as a high number of cores and fast local SSD storage. By integrating realistic simulations based on the WRENCH framework, the method effectively dimensions the cloud infrastructure and optimizes resource usage. Experimental results highlight the superiority of MOS-MWMC compared to benchmark algorithms HEFT and Max-Min. The Pareto fronts obtained for the CyberShake, Epigenomics, and Montage workflows demonstrate closer proximity to the optimal front, confirming the algorithm’s ability to balance conflicting objectives. This study contributes to optimizing scientific workflows in complex environments by providing solutions tailored to specific user needs while minimizing costs and execution times. 展开更多

To obtain high-resolution of the subsurface structure, we modeled multidepth slanted airgun sources to attenuate the source ghost. By firing the guns in sequence according to their relative depths, such a source can build constructive primaries and destructive ghosts. To evaluate the attenuation of ghosts, the normalized squared error of the spectrum of the actual vs the expected signature is computed. We used a typical 680 cu.in airgun string and found via simulations that a depth interval of 1 or 1.5 m between airguns is optimum when considering deghosting performance and operational feasibility. When more subarrays are combined, preliminary simulations are necessary to determine the optimum depth combination. The frequency notches introduced by the excess use of subarrays may negatively affect the deghosting performance. Two or three slanted subarrays can be combined to remove the ghost effect. The sequence combination may partly affect deghosting but this can be eliminated by matched filtering. Directivity comparison shows that a multi-depth slanted source can significantly attenuate the notches and widen the energy transmission stability area. 展开更多

Based on the analysis of the relationship between agricultural water resources and sustainable development, this paper presents a multi objective fuzzy optimization model for cropping structure and water allocation, which overcomes the shortcoming of current models that only considered the economic objective,and ignored the social and environmental objectives. During the process, a new method named fuzzy deciding weight is developed to decide the objective weight. A case study shows that the model is reliable, the method is simple and objective, and the results are reasonable. This model is useful for agricultural management and sustainable development. 展开更多

驼乳是人类各类营养元素摄入的良好来源之一,富含的营养价值更易被吸收利用,对人体健康、疾病预防及治疗具有重要作用。但由于驼乳受到不卫生的环境条件、生产过程不规范或处理方法不当等影响,极易遭受微生物的污染,这不仅威胁到驼乳产... 驼乳是人类各类营养元素摄入的良好来源之一,富含的营养价值更易被吸收利用,对人体健康、疾病预防及治疗具有重要作用。但由于驼乳受到不卫生的环境条件、生产过程不规范或处理方法不当等影响,极易遭受微生物的污染,这不仅威胁到驼乳产品的品质与安全,也成为了制约驼乳产业持续健康发展的关键因素之一。因此,该研究通过16S rRNA扩增子测序技术对挤奶瓶、乳头夹、储奶罐、乳头、饮用水、饲料、粪便和驼舍空气样品中微生物多样性比较分析。采用Source Tracker分析模型对3个牧场中的微生物风险关键点分析。研究表明,A驼场生乳中乳球菌和金黄杆菌在属水平上的相对丰度较高,占比分别为52.37%和15.76%;而在B驼场生乳在属水平上主要优势菌属为罗思氏菌,相对丰度占比高达83.64%;C驼场生乳微生物属占比较高的为罗思氏菌和不动杆菌,分别为64.85%和17.58%。利用Source Tracker模型对A、B和C三个驼场的挤奶瓶、乳头夹、储奶罐、乳头、饮用水、饲料、粪便和驼舍空气样品8个风险关键点进行分析,确定造成原料乳微生物污染的风险关键点为乳头、乳头夹、挤奶瓶和储奶罐。该研究结果可为生驼乳安全性的提高提供参考依据。 展开更多

A multi-isotope approach and mixing model were combined to identify spatial and seasonal variations of sources,and their proportional contribution to nitrate in the Hutuo River alluvial-pluvial fan region.The results showed that the NO3- concentration was significantly higher in the Hutuo River valley plain(178.7 mg/L) region than that in the upper and central pluvial fans of the Hutuo River(82.1 mg/L and 71.0 mg/L,respectively)and in the river(17.0 mg/L).Different land use types had no significant effect on the groundwater nitrate concentration.Based on a multi-isotope approach,we confirmed that the main sources of groundwater nitrate in different land use areas were domestic sewage and manure,followed by soil nitrogen,ammonia fertilizer,nitrate fertilizer and rainwater,and there were no significant spatial or seasonal variations.Combining δ^15N-NO3,δ^18O-NO3- and δ^37Cl results can increase the accuracy of traceability.Nitrification could be the most important nitrogen migration and transformation process,and denitrification did not significantly affected the isotopic composition of the nitrate.The SIAR model outputs revealed that the main nitrate pollution sources in groundwater and river water were domestic sewage and manure,accounting for 55.9%-61.0% and 22.6%(dry season),50.3%-60.4% and 34.1%(transition season),42.7%-47.6% and 35.6%(wet season 2016) and 45.9%-46.7% and 38.4%(wet season 2017),respectively.This work suggests that the random discharge and disposal of domestic sewage and manure should be the first target for control in order to prevent further nitrate contamination of the water environment. 展开更多

The flocculating activity of a novel bioflocculant MMF1 produced by multiple-microorganism consortia MM1 was investigated. MM1 was composed of strain BAFRT4 identified as Staphylococcus sp. and strain CYGS1 identified as Pseudomonas sp. The flocculating activity of MMF1 isolated from the screening medium was 82.9%, which is remarkably higher than that of the bioflocculant produced by either of the strains under the same condition. Brewery wastewater was also used as the carbon source for MM1, and the cost-effective production medium for MM1 mainly comprised 1.0 L brewery water (chemical oxygen demand (COD) 5000 mg/L), 0.5 g/L urea, 0.5 g/L yeast extract, and 0.2 g/L (NH4)2SO4. The optimal conditions for the production of MMF1 was inoculum size 2%, initial pH 6.0, cultivating temperature 30℃, and shaking speed 160 r/min, under which the flocculating activity of the MMF1 reached 96.8%. Fifteen grams of purified bioflocculant could be recovered from 1.0 L of fermentation broth. MMF1 was identified as a macromolecular substance containing both protein and polysaccharide. It showed good flocculating performance in treating indigotin printing and dyeing wastewater, and the maximal removal efficiencies of COD and chroma were 79.2% and 86.5%, respectively. 展开更多

Correct identification of water inrush sources is particularly important to prevent and control mine water disasters.Hydrochemical analysis,Fisher discriminant analysis,and geothermal verification analysis were used to identify and verify the water sources of the multi-aquifer groundwater system in Gubei coal mine,Anhui Province,North China.Results show that hydrochemical water types of the Cenozoic top aquifer included HCO3-Na+K-Ca,HCO3-Na+K-Mg and HCO3-Na+K,and this aquifer was easily distinguishable from other aquifers because of its low concentration of Na++K+and Cl-.The Cenozoic middle and bottom aquifers,the Permian fissure aquifer,and the Taiyuan and Ordovician limestone aquifers were mainly characterized by the Cl-Na+K and SO4-Cl-Na+K or HCO3-Cl-Na+K water types,and their hydrogeochemistries were similar.Therefore,water sources could not be identified via hydrochemical analysis.Fisher model was established based on the hydrogeochemical characteristics,and its discrimination rate was 89.19%.Fisher discrimination results were improved by combining them with the geothermal analysis results,and this combination increased the identification rate to 97.3%and reasonably explained the reasons behind two water samples misjudgments.The methods described herein are also applicable to other mines with similar geological and hydrogeological conditions in North China. 展开更多

The main objectives of this study were to introduce an integrated method for effectively identifying soil heavy metal pollution sources and apportioning their contributions, and apply it to a case study. The method combines the principal component analysis/absolute principal component scores (PCA/APCS) receptor model and geostatistics. The case study was conducted in an area of 31 km2 in the urban-rural transition zone of Wuhan, a metropolis of central China. 124 topsoil samples were collected for measuring the concentrations of eight heavy metal elements (Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni and Co). PCA results revealed that three major factors were responsible for soil heavy metal pollution, which were initially identified as "steel production", "agronomic input" and "coal consumption". The APCS technique, combined with multiple linear regression analysis, was then applied for source apportionment. Steel production appeared to be the main source for Ni, Co, Cd, Zn and Mn, agronomic input for Cu, and coal consumption for Pb and Cr. Geostatistical interpolation using ordinary kriging was finally used to map the spatial distributions of the contributions of pollution sources and further confirm the result interpretations. The introduced method appears to be an effective tool in soil pollution source apportionment and identification, and might provide valuable reference information for pollution control and environmental management. 展开更多

Testability plays an important role in improving the readiness and decreasing the lifecycle cost of equipment. Testability demonstration and evaluation is of significance in measuring such testability indexes as fault detection rate(FDR) and fault isolation rate(FIR), which is useful to the producer in mastering the testability level and improving the testability design, and helpful to the consumer in making purchase decisions. Aiming at the problems with a small sample of testability demonstration test data(TDTD) such as low evaluation confidence and inaccurate result, a testability evaluation method is proposed based on the prior information of multiple sources and Bayes theory. Firstly, the types of prior information are analyzed. The maximum entropy method is applied to the prior information with the mean and interval estimate forms on the testability index to obtain the parameters of prior probability density function(PDF), and the empirical Bayesian method is used to get the parameters for the prior information with a success-fail form. Then, a parametrical data consistency check method is used to check the compatibility between all the sources of prior information and TDTD. For the prior information to pass the check, the prior credibility is calculated. A mixed prior distribution is formed based on the prior PDFs and the corresponding credibility. The Bayesian posterior distribution model is acquired with the mixed prior distribution and TDTD, based on which the point and interval estimates are calculated.Finally, examples of a flying control system are used to verify the proposed method. One is a single current model and the other is a current multipole model. Parameters denoting the properties of these two models are calculated by a least-square fit to the measurements using a simulated annealing algorithm. The measured signals are detected at 36 observation nodes by a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). By studying the trends of position, orientation and magnitude of the single current dipole model and the current multipole model in the QRS complex during one time span and comparing the reconstructed magnetocardiography (MCG) of these two cardiac models, we find that the current multipole model is a more appropriate model to represent cardiac electrophysiological activity. 展开更多

The Digital Elevation Model(DEM)data of debris flow prevention engineering are the boundary of a debris flow prevention simulation,which provides accurate and reliable DEM data and is a key consideration in debris flow prevention simulations.Thus,this paper proposes a multi-source data fusion method.First,we constructed 3D models of debris flow prevention using virtual reality technology according to the relevant specifications.The 3D spatial data generated by 3D modeling were converted into DEM data for debris flow prevention engineering.Then,the accuracy and applicability of the DEM data were verified by the error analysis testing and fusion testing of the debris flow prevention simulation.Finally,we propose the Levels of Detail algorithm based on the quadtree structure to realize the visualization of a large-scale disaster prevention scene.The test results reveal that the data fusion method controlled the error rate of the DEM data of the debris flow prevention engineering within an allowable range and generated 3D volume data(obj format)to compensate for the deficiency of the DEM data whereby the 3D internal entity space is not expressed.Additionally,the levels of detailed method can dispatch the data of a large-scale debris flow hazard scene in real time to ensure a realistic 3D visualization.In summary,the proposed methods can be applied to the planning of debris flow prevention engineering and to the simulation of the debris flow prevention process. 展开更多
