Deformation prediction for extra-high arch dams is highly important for ensuring their safe operation. To address the challenges of complex monitoring data, the uneven spatial distribution of deformation, and the construction and optimization of a prediction model for deformation prediction,a multipoint ultrahigh arch dam deformation prediction model, namely, the CEEMDAN-KPCA-GSWOA-KELM,which is based on a clustering partition,is pro-posed.First,the monitoring data are preprocessed via variational mode decomposition(VMD)and wavelet denoising(WT),which effectively filters out noise and improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the data, providing high-quality input data for subsequent prediction models.Second, scientific cluster partitioning is performed via the K-means++algorithm to precisely capture the spatial distribution characteristics of extra-high arch dams and ensure the consistency of deformation trends at measurement points within each partition. Finally,CEEMDAN is used to separate monitoring data, predict and analyze each component, combine the KPCA(Kernel Principal Component Analysis)and the KELM(Kernel Extreme Learning Machine)optimized by the GSWOA(Global Search Whale Optimization Algorithm),integrate the predictions of each component via reconstruction methods, and precisely predict the overall trend of ultrahigh arch dam deformation. An extra high arch dam project is taken as an example and validated via a comparative analysis of multiple models. The results show that the multipoint deformation prediction model in this paper can combine data from different measurement points, achieve a comprehensive, precise prediction of the deformation situation of extra high arch dams, and provide strong technical support for safe operation. 展开更多

The integration of digital twin(DT)technology with microseismic(MS)monitoring for evaluating the dynamic response of high-arch dams remains under-explored.This paper investigates the application of MS monitoring on the Dagangshan high-arch dam during its normal water storage operating period to assess potential damage. The study analyzes the MS characteristics of the dam during the Luding earthquake(Ms=6.8).A framework for constructing a damage driven DT model of a high-arch dam is proposed. The DT model is capable of self-updating its mechanical parameters based on MS data.Seismic response calculations are conducted utilizing cloud computing, allowing for the direct presentation of results within the DT model. The results indicate a high-risk area of the Dagangshan arch dam, characterized by significantMS deformation, primarily centered on the arch crown beam. This zone encompasses dam sections Nos.5-6,10-11,13-16,and 19-20,all located above 1030 m elevation.Under seismic loading, the arch dam exhibits a back-and-forth movement along the river, ultimately reaching a stable state.Following the earthquake, the stress state of the dam does not experience substantial changes. The average relative error between numerical results and measured peak ground acceleration values is 17%when considering the cumulative effect of damage, compared to 36%when neglecting this effect. This study presents a more reliable approach for assessing the state of dams. 展开更多

Understanding the deterioration behaviors and mechanisms of rocks under thermo-hydromechanical(THM)interactions is crucial for mitigating slope instability. In this study, the physicomechanical properties of silty mudstone subjected to THM interactions were investigated by triaxial tests. The underlying micro-mechanisms were revealed using microscopic tests. The triaxial test results indicate that the strength parameters of silty mudstone decrease by 89.50%(deformation modulus),78.15%(peak strength),70.58%(cohesion),and 48.65%(friction angle)under 16 THM cycles,a load of 300 kPa,and alternating between 0℃water immersion and 60℃drying.The SEM test results indicate that the deterioration of silty mudstone strength primarily results from hydrothermal-expansion softening and cracking driven by the TLHM interactions. The specimens manifest shear failure under confining pressure exceeding 140 kPa.Furthermore,a new constitutive model considering hydrothermalexpansion strain and non-linear deformation characteristics was developed. The discrepancy between the experimentally measured peak strength and the damage constitutive model prediction remains below 5%.The proposed model is verified to be in satisfactory agreement with the experimental results. The self-designed THM apparatus overcomes the limitations of traditional investigations, enabling simultaneous consideration of thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical interactions. 展开更多

In deep coal mining, surrounding rock is subjected to both high in-situ stress and intense mining disturbances, leading to significant time-dependent behavior.Accurately capturing this behavior is essential for predicting long-term roadway stability, necessitating the development of a reliable constitutive creep model and numerical simulation approach. In this study, creep experiments were conducted on pre-damaged rock with varying initial damage levels to investigate the time-dependent mechanical properties.Based on the experimental results,an accelerated-creep criterion was proposed, and an elastic-viscoplastic creep damage model(EVPCD)was established that simultaneously considers the effects of time-dependent damage and instantaneous damage caused by stress disturbances on rock creep behavior.Subsequently, the effectiveness of the proposed creep model was verified using experimental data, and the secondary development of the EVPCD model was completed based on the FLAC3D platform.Following this,a long-term stability analysis method of deep surrounding rock that accounts for excavation-and mining-induced disturbances was proposed.Using the main roadway of Xutuan Coal Mine as a case study, numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the time-dependent deformation and failure characteristics of the surrounding rock following excavation and mining disturbance.Combined with on-site monitoring of the surrounding rock damage areas, the results indicate that the EVPCD outperforms the CVISC and Nishihara models in predicting the time-dependent behavior of deep surrounding rock. 展开更多

To reveal the influence of coupled effects of dry-wet cycling and precompression stress(CEDWCPS)on the damage evolution of limestone with horizontal fissure(LHF),a series of degradation and uniaxial compression tests were conducted, and a corresponding piecewise damage constitutive model(PDCM)was established. We found that both dry-wet cycling and precompression stress deteriorate the physical properties, alter the microscopic characteristics, and reduce the mechanical properties of the LHF.These degradations are particularly pronounced under the CEDWCPS,although the magnitude of these changes gradually diminishes with the progression of dry-wet cycling.Meanwhile, they also reduce the deformation degree, prolong the micropore compaction stage, shorten the unstable crack propagation stage, lower the frequency and intensity of AE events, decrease the high-amplitude and high-frequency AE signals, enlarge crack scales, and shorten the crack initiation time.Among the changes of these indicators, the dry-wet cycling plays a dominant role. The crack types of LHF under the CEDWCPS(LHFCEDWCPS)are predominantly tensile cracks, supplemented by shear cracks. The failure mode can be defined as tensileshear composite failure. Finally, the established PDCM effectively captures the nonlinear deformation of micropore and the linear deformation of the matrix in LHFCEDWCPS,with all corresponding R^(2) consistently exceeding 0.97. 展开更多

Deep rock engineering is affected by coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical(THM)-dynamic fields, necessitating the elucidation of the dynamic mechanical behavior and failure mechanisms. This study utilized a Multi-field Coupled Controlled Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(MCC-SHPB)system to elucidate the cross-scale dynamic responses of rocks and the boundaries of failure modes under THM coupling.Impact tests were conducted on green sandstone under coupled conditions of temperature(25℃-80℃),confining pressure(0-15 MPa),and seepage water pressure(0-15 MPa).Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)microstructural characterization and COMSOL Multiphysics numerical simulations were conducted, and a dynamic constitutive theoretical framework and failure-prediction methodology were established. We investigated the impact toughness index(I_(t)),dynamic modulus(E_(d)),dynamic triaxial compressive strength(TCS_(d)),fragmentation degree(W),and failure modes of green sandstone under thermo-confining pressure-seepage-impact loading conditions. The key findings reveal that the(I_(t))reflects different energy regulation mechanisms across different confining pressure regimes.Thermal-microcrack interactions dominate at low pressure, and energy absorption prevails at high pressure.A triphasic dynamic modulus model captures stiffness evolution under energy-driven conditions, revealing cross-scale crack nucleation-propagation and fragment reorganization. The TCSd inflection point signifies energy dissipation shifts, causing nonlinear skeleton bearing-capacity degradation.A critical criterion based on the W was established to distinguish between the two failure modes and predict the unstable failure initiation.Numerical simulations were used to elucidate the effects of inertia-dominated crack propagation and stress wave interference, validating the critical criterion and the predictive accuracy of the theoretical model during cross-scale failure. This study provides a theoretical foundation for assessing the dynamic stability of rock masses subjected to multi-field coupling during deep resource exploitation. 展开更多

To investigate the effects of water and cyclic loading on dolomite’s mechanical properties during deep mining, mechanical experiments on non-pressure water absorption and cyclic loading were conducted. The findings reveal that the elastic modulus and Poisson ratio of dolomite fluctuate with increasing water content. The mass of water absorption is positively correlated with time and the water absorption stage can be divided into three stages:accelerated, decelerated, and stabilized stages.During this process, the number of pores in dolomite increases, while the pore diameter initially decreases and then fluctuates.Microscopic analysis shows that the proportion of mesopores first increases and then decreases, while micropores exhibit the opposite trend, and the proportion of macropores fluctuates around 0%.A model diagram of structural evolution during water absorption has been developed.Additionally, the softening process of dolomite’s water absorption strength is categorized into three stages:a relatively stable stage,an accelerated softening stage dominated by mesopore water absorption, and a decelerated softening stage characterized by micropore water absorption.A uniaxial damage constitutive model for dolomite under water influence was established based on the Weibull distribution and Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion, and experimental validation indicates its strong applicability. 展开更多

Understanding the mesoscopic tensile fracture damage of rock is the basis of evaluating the deterioration process of mechanical properties of heat-damaged rock. For this, tensile tests of rocks under high-temperature treatment were conducted with a ϕ75 mm split Hopkinson tension bar (SHTB) to investigate the mesoscopic fracture and damage properties of rock. An improved scanning electron microscopy (SEM) experimental method was used to analyze the tensile fracture surfaces of rock samples. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed to assess evolution of mesoscopic damage of heat-damaged rock under tensile loading. A constitutive model describing the mesoscopic fractal damage under thermo-mechanical coupling was established. The results showed that the high temperatures significantly reduced the tensile strength and fracture surface roughness of the red sandstone. The three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the fracture surface of the samples that experienced tensile failure at 900 °C showed a flat surface. The standard deviation of elevation and slope angle of specimen fracture surface first increased and then decreased with increasing temperature. The threshold for brittle fracture of the heat-damaged red sandstone specimens was 600 °C. Beyond this threshold temperature, local ductile fracture occurred, resulting in plastic deformation of the fracture surface during tensile fracturing. With increase of temperature, the internal meso-structure of samples was strengthened slightly at first and then deteriorated gradually, which was consistent with the change of macroscopic mechanical properties of red sandstone. The mesoscopic characteristics, such as the number, mean side length, maximum area, porosity, and fractal dimension of crack, exhibited an initial decline, followed by a gradual increase. The development of microcracks in samples had significant influence on mesoscopic fractal dimension. The mesoscopic fractal characteristics were used to establish a mesoscopic fractal damage constitutive model for red sandstone, and the agreement between the theoretical and experimental results validated the proposed model. 展开更多

The study focuses on the creep characteristics of significant yellow sandstone for water conservancy, hydropower, and other waterrelated slope excavation unloading rock-graded loading creep characteristics. It conducts a uniaxial graded loading creep test on yellow sandstone under different pre-peak unloading and wetting-drying cycles. The improved nonlinear Nishihara model was obtained by introducing a nonlinear viscous element with an accelerated creep threshold switch. The sensitivity characteristics of the parameters of the improved creep model were analyzed and a nonlinear creep constitutive model was established, considering the unloading-cyclic intrinsic damage induced by water intrusion. The research results show that:(1)With an increase in the unloading point, the porosity of the rock samples initially decreases and then increases. As the number of cyclic water intrusions rises, the porosity of the rock samples gradually increases, reaching a maximum of 9.58% at an unloading point of 70% uniaxial compression stress(0.7 Rc) after five cycles.(2) Total creep deformation increases with the number of cyclic water intrusions;however, with an increase in the unloading ratio, the original samples show an initial decrease, followed by an increase in creep deformation. With a higher unloading ratio and various instances of cyclic water intrusion, the total creep time of the rock samples, compared to the original samples, is reduced by 21.8%and 23.02%. The creep damage mode gradually changes from shear damage to tensile damage.(3) The sensitivity characteristics of the improved creep model parameters show that transient elasticity modulus E1 is affected by the coupling of unloading and cyclic water intrusion. The viscoelastic modulus E2 and viscous coefficient η1 are mainly affected by unloading and cyclic water intrusion.(4) Based on the strain equivalence principle of damage mechanics, the damage treatment of the parameters in the original model is improved to construct a nonlinear creep constitutive model that considers unloading-cyclic water intrusion damage. A parameter inversion and comparison to the traditional Nishihara model reveal an average relative standard deviation of 0.271%,significantly less than 1%, indicating a more accurate nonlinear creep constitutive model. The research results are crucial for analyzing the long-term stability of water-related steep rocky slopes post-excavation and unloading and for preventing and controlling creep-type landslide disasters. 展开更多

Concrete material model plays an important role in numerical predictions of its dynamic responses subjected to projectile impact and charge explosion.Current concrete material models could be distinguished into two kinds,i.e.,the hydro-elastoplastic-damage model with independent equation of state and the cap-elastoplastic-damage model with continuous cap surface. The essential differences between the two kind models are vital for researchers to choose an appropriate kind of concrete material model for their concerned problems, while existing studies have contradictory conclusions. To resolve this issue, the constitutive theories of the two kinds of models are firstly overviewed. Then, the constitutive theories between the two kinds of models are comprehensively compared and the main similarities and differences are clarified, which are demonstrated by single element numerical examples. Finally, numerical predictions for projectile penetration and charge explosion experiments on concrete targets are compared to further demonstrate the conclusion made by constitutive comparison. It is found that both the two kind models could be used to simulate the dynamic responses of concrete under projectile impact and blast loadings,if the parameter needed in material models are well calibrated, although some discrepancies between them may exist. 展开更多

The article presents a methodology for transitioning to the Amsterdam height system based on utilizing global and regional geoid/quasi-geoid models. The study was conducted for the Polish-Ukrainian cross-border sector and expanded to the entire territory of Poland and Ukraine. The input data comprised two regional and five global geoid/quasi-geoid models. The initial data analysis was conducted for all models relative to GNSS/leveling data in the Baltic height system. The secondary analysis was performed relative to the combined PL-quasi-geoid2021 model and the gravimetric EGG2015 model.Based on the analysis results,a methodology for optimizing heights between regional and global geoid/quasi-geoid models was developed, including the following stages:calculation of conditional global and regional geoid/quasi-geoid heights, calculation of approximately predicted height differences between the conditional regional and global geoid/quasi-geoid,implementation of the refinement(correction)of approximate heights at the regional model, optimization of approximate heights at the regional model, and calculation of a regional combined model in the Amsterdam height system. The developed methodology enables the integration of regional and global geoid/quasi-geoid models into the Amsterdam height system with an accuracy of 1-2 cm by optimizing their heights. The advantage of this methodology is that it requires only a minimal amount of GNSS/leveling data to establish connections between different height systems. 展开更多

Coral reef limestone(CRL)constitutes a distinctive marine carbonate formation with complex mechanical properties. This study investigates the multiscale damage and fracture mechanisms of CRL through integrated experimental testing, digital core technology, and theoretical modelling. Two CRL types with contrasting mesostructures were characterized across three scales.Macroscopically,CRL-I and CRL-II exhibited mean compressive strengths of 8.46 and 5.17 MPa,respectively.Mesoscopically,CRL-I featured small-scale highly interconnected pores, whilst CRL-II developed larger stratified pores with diminished connectivity.Microscopically, both CRL matrices demonstrated remarkable similarity in mineral composition and mechanical properties.A novel voxel average-based digital core scaling methodology was developed to facilitate numerical simulation of cross-scale damage processes, revealing network-progressive failure in CRL-I versus directional-brittle failure in CRL-II.Furthermore,a damage statistical constitutive model based on digital core technology and mesoscopic homogenisation theory established quantitative relationships between microelement strength distribution and macroscopic mechanical behavior. These findings illuminate the fundamental mechanisms through which mesoscopic structure governs the macroscopic mechanical properties of CRL. 展开更多

Concrete materials are employed extensively in a variety of large-scale structures due to their economic viability and superior mechanical properties.During the service life of concrete structures, they are inevitably subjected to damage from impact loading from natural disasters, such as earthquakes and storms. In recent years, the phasefield model has demonstrated exceptional capability in predicting the stochastic initiation, propagation, and bifurcation of cracks in materials. This study employs a phase-field model to focus on the rate dependency and failure response of concrete under impact deformation.A viscosity coefficient is introduced within the phase-field model to characterize the viscous behavior of dynamic crack propagation in concrete. The rate-dependent cohesive strength is defined within the yield function of concrete, where the rate sensitivity of cohesive strength facilitates the accumulation of the plastic driving force in the phase-field model. This process effectively captures the impact failure response of concrete. The applicability of the model was validated through unit cell experiments and numerical simulations of concrete under impact compression.Furthermore, the mechanical response and damage evolution mechanisms of concrete under impact loading were analyzed. It was observed that crack propagation in concrete initiates at material defects and, with increasing load, eventually develops in a direction perpendicular to the loading axis. 展开更多

This study proposed a new and more flexible S-shaped rock damage evolution model from a phenomenological perspective based on an improved Logistic function to describe the characteristics of the rock strain softening and damage process.Simultaneously,it established a constitutive model capable of describing the entire process of rock pre-peak compaction and post-peak strain softening deformation, considering the nonlinear effects of the initial compaction stage of rocks, combined with damage mechanics theory and effective medium theory. In addition, this research verified the rationality of the constructed damage constitutive model using results from uniaxial and conventional triaxial compression tests on Miluo granite, yellow sandstone, mudstone, and glutenite. The results indicate that based on the improved Logistic function, the theoretical damage model accurately describes the entire evolution of damage characteristics during rock compression deformation, from maintenance through gradual onset, accelerated development to deceleration and termination,in a simple and unified expression. At the same time, the constructed constitutive model can accurately simulate the stress-strain process of different rock types under uniaxial and conventional triaxial compression, and the theoretical model curve closely aligns with experimental data.Compared to existing constitutive models, the proposed model has significant advantages. The damage model parameters a,r and β have clear physical meanings and interact competitively, where the three parameters collectively determine the shape of the theoretical stress−strain curve. 展开更多

The constitutive model is essential for predicting the deformation and stability of rocksoil mass. The estimation of constitutive model parameters is a necessary and important task for the reliable characterization of mechanical behaviors. However, constitutive model parameters cannot be evaluated accurately with a limited amount of test data, resulting in uncertainty in the prediction of stress-strain curves. This paper proposes a Bayesian analysis framework to address this issue. It combines the Bayesian updating with the structural reliability and adaptive conditional sampling methods to assess the equation parameter of constitutive models.Based on the triaxial and ring shear tests on shear zone soils from the Huangtupo landslide,a statistical damage constitutive model and a critical state hypoplastic constitutive model were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Moreover, the parameter uncertainty effects of the damage constitutive model on landslide stability were investigated. Results show that reasonable assessments of the constitutive model parameter can be well realized. The variability of stress-strain curves is strongly related to the model prediction performance. The estimation uncertainty of constitutive model parameters should not be ignored for the landslide stability calculation. Our study provides a reference for uncertainty analysis and parameter assessment of the constitutive model. 展开更多

This paper presents an investigation of well integrity during low-temperature CO_(2)injection using a model of thermo-poroelasticity with interface damage mechanics. The casing-cement and cement-formation interfaces are described using cohesive interface elements and a bilinear traction-separation law.Verification testing is performed to establish the correct implementation of the coupled thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical equations.Simulation scenarios are developed to determine well interface damage initiation and development for intact wells and wells with an initial defect in the form of a 45°debonded azimuth. Each intact and defective well was simulated for30 days of CO_(2)injection at selected temperatures.Under the conditions considered, tensile radial stress developed at both the casing-cement and cement-formation interfaces.Hoop stress in the cement sheath remained compressive after 30 days but with reduced magnitude at the lower injection temperature, indicating greater risk of tensile stress and radial cracking as the injection temperature was reduced.Damage occurred in two of four scenarios considered, namely, the intact and defective wells at an injection temperature of 10℃,and was limited to the casing-cement interface, with no damage to the cement-formation interface.Inclusion of the pre-existing defect led to earlier damage initiation,at 2.75 days compared to 4 days, and produced a microannulus with over double the peak aperture at 0.077 mm compared to 0.037 mm.These findings emphasize the importance of accounting for initial defects and damage evolution when investigating the integrity of CO_(2)injection wells. 展开更多

In order to investigate the damage tolerance of a metastable Ti-5Al-3V-3Mo-2Cr-2Zr-1Nb-1Fe(Ti5321)alloy with bimodal microstructure using void growth quantification and micromechanical modeling,in situ tensile testing was performed during X-ray microtomography experiments.Compared with investigations of surface voids by traditional two-dimensional(2D)methods involving post-mortem characterization,three-dimensional(3D)information on void evolution inside optically opaque samples obtained through X-ray microtomography is essential. The Rice and Tracey model and Huang model were applied to predict void growth and show good agreement with experimental data using calibration of the damage parameterα.The void growth kinetics of Ti5321 with bimodal microstructure was analyzed by comparing theαvalue with that of Ti64 for different microstructure morphologies. The damage mechanism of ductile fracture of Ti5321 with bimodal microstructure is discussed. It was found that the size of the voids apparently increases with the triaxiality of stress.Post-mortem scanning electron microscopy(SEM)was also used to demonstrate this damage mechanism of ductile fracture of Ti5321. 展开更多
