A high-sensitivity curvature sensor based on an up-taper-core-offset structure is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Here two specially designed cascaded up-tapers with maximum diameters of 247 μm and 251 μm, respectively, are used as a cladding mode exciting component. The excited cladding modes will propagate in the cladding and re-couplers with the core mode at the core-offset jointing point. When the curvature is changed, the dip wavelength of the sensor will shift to a blue wavelength and an average curvature sensitivity of more than -12.5 nm/m^-1 is achieved within the measured curvature intervals. 展开更多

A modal interferometer is experimentally demonstrated based on tapering a single-mode-multimode-single- mode (SMS) fiber structure heated by hydrogen flame. The interference fringe begins to form when tapering length is 19.8 mm, and becomes regular and clear when the tapering length is longer and the tapered waist diameter is smaller. Annealing process is undertaken to achieve a high extension ratio of approximately 17 dB with free spectral range of 1.5 nm when the tapering length is 33 mm and the tapered waist diameter is approximately 5 μm. The temperature and axial strain dependences of the tapered SMS structure are characterized, and the measured temperature and strain coefficients are +7 pm/℃ and -9.536 pm/με, respectively. 展开更多

Switchable multi-wavelength fiber laser based on modal interference

A comb fiber filter based on modal interference is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Here two cascaded uptapers are used to excite the cladding mode, and a core-offset jointing point is used to act as an interference component.Experimental results show that this kind of structure possesses a comb filter property in a range of the C-band. The measured extinction ratio is better than 12 dB with an insertion loss of about 11 dB. A switchable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser based on this novel comb filter is demonstrated. By adjusting the polarization controller, the output laser can be switched among single-, dual-, and three-wavelengths with a side mode suppression ratio of better than 45 dB. 展开更多

A novel miniature Fabry-Perot interferometric(FPI) temperature sensor is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The modal interferometer is fabricated by just splicing a section of photonic crystal fiber(PCF) with a single-mode fiber(SMF). The air holes of the PCF are fully collapsed by the discharge arc during the splicing procedure to enhance the reflection coefficient of the splicing point. The transmission spectra with different temperatures are measured, and the experimental results show that the linear response of 11.12 pm/°C in the range of 30–80 °C is obtained. This sensor has potential applications in temperature measurement field. 展开更多
