It is found that the tensile properties of a novel Al-Cu-Li alloy are sensitive to aging processes, which correspond to different microstructures. σ(Al_5Cu_6Mg_2) and T_1(Al_2CuLi) phases are the major precipitates for the alloy in T6 aging condition(165 ℃/60 h). After duplex aging condition(150 ℃/24 h + 180 ℃/12 h), σ, θ'(Al_2Cu) and T_1 phases are detected. Only the T_1 phases can be found in the T8 state alloy(6% pre-strain+135 ℃/60 h). The failure modes of alloy in T6 and duplex aging conditions are dimple-intergranular fracture, while typical quasi-cleavage fracture in T8 condition.展开更多

When the pouring temperature is close to the liquidus temperature, the primary alpha -Al in 'the billets of AlSi7Mg alloy solidified into spherical and nodular fine grains distributed homogeneously. The optimum pouring temperature for semi-solid AlSi7Mg billet with spherical or nodular primary alpha -Al is 615 degreesC. At the same pouring temperature, the higher the pouring ladle, the more easily the spherical and nodular primary alpha -Al obtained in the semi-solid AlSi7Mg billet. When the pouring temperature is close to the liquidus temperature and the pouring ladle is relatively high, it is the great cooling rate, the flow of the molten allay caused by pouring and the large simultaneous solidification region induced by the near liquidus temperature, that promote the formation of spherical or nodular primary cr-Al.展开更多

Significant increases in room temperature ductility were obtained in these materials with reasonable enhancement in strength. It is demonstrated that the type of microstructure produced by friction stir processing (FSP) has a significant influence on the choice of post-FSP heat treatment design for achieving improved tensile properties. It is also found that the ultrafine grained FSP material could not achieve the desired high strength during the post-FSP heat treatment without grain coarsening, whereas the micro-grained FSP materials could reach such strength levels (〉560 MPa) under conventional age hardening heat treatment conditions.展开更多

Metallographic and image analysis techniques have been...The effects of Sr addition and pressure increase on the microstructure and casting defects of a low-pressure die cast (LPDC) AISi7Mg0.3 alloy have been studied. Metallographic and image analysis techniques have been used to quantitatively examine the microstructural changes and the amount of porosity occurring at different Sr levels and pressure parameters. The results indicate that an increase in the filling pressure induces lower heat dissipation of the liquid close to the die/core surfaces, with the formation of slightly greater dendrite arms and coarser eutectic Si particles. On the other hand, the increase in the Sr level leads to finer microstructural scale and eutectic Si. The analysed variables, within the experimental conditions, do not affect the morphology of eutectic Si particles. Higher applied pressure and Sr content generate castings with lower amount of porosiW. However, as the filling pressure increases the flow of metal inside the die cavity is more turbulent, leading to the formation of oxide films and cold shots. In the analysed range of experimental conditions, the design of experiment methodology and the analysis of variance have been used to develop statistical models that accurately predict the average size of secondary dendrite arm spacing and the amount of porosity in the low-pressure die cast AISiTMg0.3 alloy.展开更多
Five forging experiments were designed and conducted to investigate the effect of process parameters on microstructure evolution during hot deformation for X12CrMoWVNbN10-1-1 steel.The experimental results indicated t...Five forging experiments were designed and conducted to investigate the effect of process parameters on microstructure evolution during hot deformation for X12CrMoWVNbN10-1-1 steel.The experimental results indicated that average grain size became finer with the increasing number of upsetting and stretching.Especially,the size of stretching three times with upsetting twice had the most remarkable effect on refinement,and the size was only 27.36%of the original one.Moreover,the stress model was integrated into the software and finite element models were established.Simulation results demonstrated that the strain at center point of workpiece was far larger than critical strain value in each process,so that dynamic recrystallization(DRX) occurred in each workpiece,which implied DRX could occur for several times with the increasing number of upsetting and stretching,and uniform finer microstructure would be obtained.However,the results also showed that higher temperature was an unfavorable factor for grain refinement,so the times of heating should be limited for workpiece,and as many forging processes as possible should be finished in once heating.展开更多

Special attention was paid to the effects of process parameters on the morphology and distribution of externally solidified crystals(ESCs) in the microstructure of magnesium alloy die castings, such as slow shot phase plunger velocity, delay time of pouring and fast shot phase plunger velocity. On the basis of metallographic observation and quantitative statistics, it is concluded that a lower slow shot phase plunger velocity and a longer delay time of pouring both lead to an increment of the size and percentage of the ESCs, due to the fact that a longer holding time of the melt in the shot sleeve will cause a more severe loss of the superheat. The impingement of the melt flow on the ESCs is more intensive with a higher fast shot phase plunger velocity, in such case the ESCs reveal a more granular and roundish morphology and are dispersed throughout the cross section of the castings. Based on analysis of the filling and solidification processes of the melt during the HPDC process, reasonable explanations were proposed in terms of the nucleation, growth, remelting and fragmentation of the ESCs to interpret the effects of process parameters on the morphology and distribution of the ESCs in the microstructure of magnesium alloy die castings.展开更多

A compari...Friction stir welding (FSW) and stationary shoulder friction stir welding (SSFSW) were carried out for the butt joining of dissimilar AA2024-T3 and AA7050-T7651 aluminium alloys with thicknesses of 2 mm. A comparison between the two processes was performed by varying the welding speed while keeping the rotational speed constant, Through the analysis of the force and torque produced during welding and a simple analytical model, it was possible to show that in SSFSW there is more effective coupling with the tool and the heat produced is more efficiently distributed. This process decreases both the welding area and the diffusion at the interface of the two alloys compared with FSW. The minimum microhardness occurred at the advancing side (AS) at the interface between the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and the stir zone (SZ) in both processes, although the decrease was more gradual in SSFSW. This interface is also where all specimens failed for both welding technologies. An increase in tensile strength was measured in SSFSW compared with standard FSW. Furthermore, it was possible to establish the mechanical performance of the material in the fracture zone using digital image correlation.展开更多

Correlations were developed between the macroscopic properties and microstructure of the organic coatings. The surface appearance, mechanical properties, and permeability of the organic coatings were measured. Furthermore, the crystal structure of the organic coatings was investigated through synchrotron radiation grazing incidence X-ray diffraction(GIXRD) on the BL14B1 beam line in Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Combined with the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the molecular structure of the organic coatings was investigated. The experimental results indicate that the thickness variation and weight loss of the organic coatings increase with the immersion time, and the penetration resistance of the coating obviously decreases as the temperature rises. Moreover, the degradation of the organic coatings with immersion time in high temperature and high CO_2 partial pressure environment is caused by the amorphization of the organic coatings as the groups and bonds of the organic coatings were not damaged.展开更多

After rolling,the structure of the sheet is likely to be heterogeneous along the normal direction. The microstructure and ordering evolution in the thickness range of the sheets during hot-warm rolling process was studied by means of optical microscope and transmission electron microscope. The results show that dynamic recrystallization occurs in the surface parts during the hot and warm rolling processes,where the grains are equiaxed but have high density of dislocations due to the large deformation. The grains in the center part are elongated along the rolling direction. It is also found that in the hot rolled sheet,the center part has lower density of dislocations because of dynamic recovery. Meanwhile,this part has higher ordering content compared with the surface part,indicating that the high density of dislocations can inhibit the formation of ordering in the air cooling process after hot rolling. In the warm rolling process,both of the parts are deformed heavily. Large deformation destroys ordered phases and induces disordering. The ordering content is low in the whole warm rolled sheet.展开更多

Th...The high-temperature deformation behavior of a beta Ti-3.0 Al-3.5 Cr-2.0 Fe-0.1 B alloy was investigated by a Gleeble-1500 D thermal simulator. The height reduction was 50%, corresponding to a true strain of 0.693. The strain rate ranging from 0.01 to 10.00 s^-1 and the deformation temperature ranging from 800 to 950 ℃ were considered.The flow stress and the apparent activation energy for deformation, along with the constitutive equation, were used to analyze the behavior of the Ti-3.0 Al-3.5 Cr-2.0 Fe-0.1 B alloy. The processing map was established. The effect of strain rate on the microstructure at 850 ℃ was evaluated.The flow stress-strain curves indicated that the peak flow stresses increased along with an increase in the strain rate and decreased as the deformation temperature increased.Based on the true stress-true strain curves, the constitutive equation was established and followed as the ε= 6.58×10-(10)[sinh(0.0113σ)]-(3.44)exp(-245481.3/RT). The processing map exhibited the "unsafe" region at the strain rate of10 s^-1 and the temperature of 850 ℃,and the rest region was "safe". The deformation microstructure demonstrated that both dynamic recovery(DRV) and dynamic recrystallization(DRX) existed during deformation. At the lower strain rate of 0.01 s^-1, the main deformation mechanism was the DRV, and the DRX was the dominant deformation mechanism at the higher strain rate of 1.00 s^-1.展开更多

Suspend-dense structure and Skeleton-dense structure were selected to investigate the deformation of pavement at meso-scale. The internal microstructures of typical asphalt concretes, AC, SUP and SMA, were scanned by X-ray CT device, and microstructural changes before and after high-temperature damage were researched by digital image processing. Adaptive threshold segmentation algorithm(ATSA) based on image radius was developed and utilized to obtain the binary images of aggregates, air-voids and asphalt mastic. Then the shape and distribution of air-voids and aggregates were analyzed. The results show that the ATSA can distinguish the target and background effectively. Gradation and coarse aggregate size of asphalt mixtures have an obvious influence on the distribution of air-voids. The movements of aggregate particles are complex and aggregates with elliptic sharp show great rotation. The effect of gradation on microstructure during high-temperature damage promotes the research about the failure mechanism of asphalt concrete pavement.展开更多

The analyses are based on tensile testing ...Results of an experimental and modelling study of forming processes in the AA2099 Al–Cu–Li alloy, for a wide range of temperatures, strains and strain rates, are presented. The analyses are based on tensile testing at 20 °C at a strain rate of 0.02 s-1and uniaxial compression testing in the temperature range 400–550 °C at strain rates ranging from0.001 to 100 s-1, for constant values of true strain of 0.5 and 0.9. The stability of plastic deformation and its relationship with a sensitivity of stress to strain rate are considered. The power dissipation efficiency coefficient, g(%), and the flow instability parameter, n B 0, were determined. The complex processing maps for hot working were determined and quantified, including process frames for basic forging processes: conventional forging and for near-superplastic and isothermal conditions. A significant aspect is the convergence of power dissipation when passing through the 500 °C peak.Deformation, temperature and strain-rate-dependent microstructures at 500 °C for strain rates of 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 s-1are described and analysed for the conventional die forging process frame, corresponding to 465–523 °C and strain rates of50–100 s-1.展开更多

The microstr...Low-cycle fatigue behavior of Ni-based superalloy GH586 with laser shock processing(LSP) was investigated. The residual stress of the specimens treated with LSP was assessed by X-ray diffraction method. The microstructure and fracture morphology were characterized by using an optical microscope(OM), a scanning electron microscope(SEM), and a transmission electron microscope(TEM). The results indicated that the maximum residual compressive stress was at about 1 mm from the shocking spot center, where the residual compressive stress was slightly lower. High density tangling dislocations, dislocation walls, and dislocation cells in the microstructure of the specimens treated with LSP effectively prevented fatigue cracks propagation. The fatigue life was roughly twice as long as that of the specimens without LSP. The fatigue crack initiation(FCI) in specimens treated with LSP was observed in the lateral section and the subsurface simultaneously. The fatigue striation in the fracture treated with LSP was narrower than that in the untreated specimens. Moreover, dimples with tear ridges were found in the fatigued zones of the LSP treated specimens, which would be caused by severe plastic deformation.展开更多

One-pass FSP decreased the ferritic grai...The stretch formability of a low carbon steel processed by friction stir processing (FSP) was studied under biaxial loading condition applied by a miniaturized Erichsen test. One-pass FSP decreased the ferritic grain size in the processed zone from 25 μm to about 3 μm, which also caused a remarkable increase in strength values without considerable decrease in formability under uniaxial loading. A coarse-grained (CG) sample before FSP reflected a moderate formability with an Erichsen index (EI) of 2.73 mm. FSP slightly decreased the stretch formability of the sample to 2.66 ram. However, FSP increased the required punch load (FEI) due to the increased strength by grain refinement. FSP reduced considerably the roughness of the free surface of the biaxial stretched samples with reduced orange peel effect. The average roughness value (Ra) decreased from 2.90 in the CG sample down to about 0.65 μm in fine-grained (FG) sample after FSP. It can be concluded that the FG microstructure in low carbon steels sheets or plates used generally in shipbuilding provides a good balance between strength and formability.展开更多

The fine-grained structure with an average grain size of about 12 μm was obtained in tbe processed...In this study, interstitial free (IF) steel plates were subjected to double-sided friction stir processing (FSP). The fine-grained structure with an average grain size of about 12 μm was obtained in tbe processed zone (PZ)with a thickness of about 2.5mm. The yield strength (325 MPa) and ultimate tensile strength (451 MPa) of FSP IF steel were significantly higher than those of base material (BM) (192 and 314 MPa), while the elongation (67.5%) almost remained unchanged compared with the BM (66.2%). The average microhardness value of the PZ was about 130 HV, 1.3 times bigher than that of the BM. In addition, the FSP IF steel showed a more positive corrosion potential and lower corrosion current density than the BM, exhibiting lower corrosion tendency and corrosion rates in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Furtbernlore, FSP IF steel exhibited higher fatigue life than the BM both in air and NaCl solution. Corrosion fatigue fracture surfaces of FSP IF steel mainly exhihited a typical transgranular fracture with fatigue striations, while the BM predominantly presented an intergranular fracture. Enhanced corrosion fatigue performance was mainly attributed to the increased resistance of nucleation and growth of fatigue cracks. The corrosion fatigue mechanism was primarily controlled by anodic dissolution under the combined effect of cyclic stress and corrosive solution.展开更多
CONSPECTUS:Additive Manufacturing(AM)technology produces three-dimensional components in a layer-by-layer fashion and offers numerous advantages over conventional manufacturing processes.Driven by the growing needs of...CONSPECTUS:Additive Manufacturing(AM)technology produces three-dimensional components in a layer-by-layer fashion and offers numerous advantages over conventional manufacturing processes.Driven by the growing needs of diverse industrial sectors,this technology has seen significant advances on both scientific and engineering fronts.Fusion-based processes are the mainstream techniques for AM of metallic materials.As the metals go through melting and solidification during the printing processes,the final microstructure and hence the properties of the printed components are highly sensitive to the printing conditions and can be very different from those of the feedstock.It is critical to understand the process-microstructure-property relationship for the accelerated optimization of the processing conditions and certification of the printed components.While experimentation has been used widely to acquire a mechanistic understanding of this subject matter,numerical modeling has become increasingly helpful in achieving the same purpose.In this Account,the authors review their ongoing collaborative effort to establish a multiphysics modeling framework to predict the process-microstructure-property relationship in fusion-based metal AM processes.The framework includes three individual modules to simulate the dominating physics that dictate the process dynamics and microstructure evolution during printing as well as the responses of the printed microstructure to specific mechanical loadings.The process model uses the material properties and processing conditions as the inputs and simulates the laser-material interaction,multiphase thermo-fluid flow,and fluid-driven powder motion.It has successfully revealed the physical causes of depression zone shape variation as well as powder motion during the laser powder bed fusion process.The microstructure model uses the thermal history of the printing process and the material chemistry as the inputs and predicts the nucleation and growth of multiple grains in the multipass and multilayer printing processes.It has been used to understand the effects of inoculation and thermal conditions on grain texture evolution.The property models use microstructure data from simulations,experimental measurements,or statistical analyses as the inputs and leverage various computational tools to predict the mechanical response of the AM materials.These models have been used to quantitatively evaluate the effects of grain structure,residual strain,and pore and void defects on their properties and performance.While this and many other modeling works have significantly grown our collective knowledge of the process-microstructure-property relationship in fusion-based metal AM processes,efforts should be further invested in developing advanced theories and algorithms for the governing physics,leveraging data-driven approaches,accelerating simulation speed,and calibrating/validating models with controlled experimental measurements,among other aspects.展开更多

文摘Five forging experiments were designed and conducted to investigate the effect of process parameters on microstructure evolution during hot deformation for X12CrMoWVNbN10-1-1 steel.The experimental results indicated that average grain size became finer with the increasing number of upsetting and stretching.Especially,the size of stretching three times with upsetting twice had the most remarkable effect on refinement,and the size was only 27.36%of the original one.Moreover,the stress model was integrated into the software and finite element models were established.Simulation results demonstrated that the strain at center point of workpiece was far larger than critical strain value in each process,so that dynamic recrystallization(DRX) occurred in each workpiece,which implied DRX could occur for several times with the increasing number of upsetting and stretching,and uniform finer microstructure would be obtained.However,the results also showed that higher temperature was an unfavorable factor for grain refinement,so the times of heating should be limited for workpiece,and as many forging processes as possible should be finished in once heating.

文摘During the cold-chamber high pressure die casting(HPDC) process, samples were produced to investigate the microstructure characteristics of AM60B magnesium alloy. Special attention was paid to the effects of process parameters on the morphology and distribution of externally solidified crystals(ESCs) in the microstructure of magnesium alloy die castings, such as slow shot phase plunger velocity, delay time of pouring and fast shot phase plunger velocity. On the basis of metallographic observation and quantitative statistics, it is concluded that a lower slow shot phase plunger velocity and a longer delay time of pouring both lead to an increment of the size and percentage of the ESCs, due to the fact that a longer holding time of the melt in the shot sleeve will cause a more severe loss of the superheat. The impingement of the melt flow on the ESCs is more intensive with a higher fast shot phase plunger velocity, in such case the ESCs reveal a more granular and roundish morphology and are dispersed throughout the cross section of the castings. Based on analysis of the filling and solidification processes of the melt during the HPDC process, reasonable explanations were proposed in terms of the nucleation, growth, remelting and fragmentation of the ESCs to interpret the effects of process parameters on the morphology and distribution of the ESCs in the microstructure of magnesium alloy die castings.
文摘Friction stir welding (FSW) and stationary shoulder friction stir welding (SSFSW) were carried out for the butt joining of dissimilar AA2024-T3 and AA7050-T7651 aluminium alloys with thicknesses of 2 mm. A comparison between the two processes was performed by varying the welding speed while keeping the rotational speed constant, Through the analysis of the force and torque produced during welding and a simple analytical model, it was possible to show that in SSFSW there is more effective coupling with the tool and the heat produced is more efficiently distributed. This process decreases both the welding area and the diffusion at the interface of the two alloys compared with FSW. The minimum microhardness occurred at the advancing side (AS) at the interface between the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and the stir zone (SZ) in both processes, although the decrease was more gradual in SSFSW. This interface is also where all specimens failed for both welding technologies. An increase in tensile strength was measured in SSFSW compared with standard FSW. Furthermore, it was possible to establish the mechanical performance of the material in the fracture zone using digital image correlation.

文摘A hypereutectic Al-Si alloy powder was prepared by ultrasonic gas atomization process. The morphologies, microstructure and phase constituent of the alloy powder were studied. The results showed that powder of the alloy was very fine and its microstructure was mainly consisted of Si crystals plus intermetallic compound A19FeSi3, which were.very fine and uniformly distributed.

文摘To evaluate the property of the organic coatings in oil and gas plants, the aging process was studied in high temperature and high CO_2 partial pressure environment. Correlations were developed between the macroscopic properties and microstructure of the organic coatings. The surface appearance, mechanical properties, and permeability of the organic coatings were measured. Furthermore, the crystal structure of the organic coatings was investigated through synchrotron radiation grazing incidence X-ray diffraction(GIXRD) on the BL14B1 beam line in Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Combined with the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the molecular structure of the organic coatings was investigated. The experimental results indicate that the thickness variation and weight loss of the organic coatings increase with the immersion time, and the penetration resistance of the coating obviously decreases as the temperature rises. Moreover, the degradation of the organic coatings with immersion time in high temperature and high CO_2 partial pressure environment is caused by the amorphization of the organic coatings as the groups and bonds of the organic coatings were not damaged.

文摘Fe-6. 5 mass% Si alloy is an excellent soft magnetic material with good application prospects. After rolling,the structure of the sheet is likely to be heterogeneous along the normal direction. The microstructure and ordering evolution in the thickness range of the sheets during hot-warm rolling process was studied by means of optical microscope and transmission electron microscope. The results show that dynamic recrystallization occurs in the surface parts during the hot and warm rolling processes,where the grains are equiaxed but have high density of dislocations due to the large deformation. The grains in the center part are elongated along the rolling direction. It is also found that in the hot rolled sheet,the center part has lower density of dislocations because of dynamic recovery. Meanwhile,this part has higher ordering content compared with the surface part,indicating that the high density of dislocations can inhibit the formation of ordering in the air cooling process after hot rolling. In the warm rolling process,both of the parts are deformed heavily. Large deformation destroys ordered phases and induces disordering. The ordering content is low in the whole warm rolled sheet.
文摘In this work, the current understanding and development of fliction-stir welding and processing of Ti- 6Al-4V alloy are briefly reviewed. The critical issues of these processes are addressed, including welding tool materials and design, tool wea,, processing temperature, material flow, processing window and residual stresses. A particular emphasis is given to microstructural aspects and microstructure-properties relationship. Potential engineering applications are highlighted.

文摘The high-temperature deformation behavior of a beta Ti-3.0 Al-3.5 Cr-2.0 Fe-0.1 B alloy was investigated by a Gleeble-1500 D thermal simulator. The height reduction was 50%, corresponding to a true strain of 0.693. The strain rate ranging from 0.01 to 10.00 s^-1 and the deformation temperature ranging from 800 to 950 ℃ were considered.The flow stress and the apparent activation energy for deformation, along with the constitutive equation, were used to analyze the behavior of the Ti-3.0 Al-3.5 Cr-2.0 Fe-0.1 B alloy. The processing map was established. The effect of strain rate on the microstructure at 850 ℃ was evaluated.The flow stress-strain curves indicated that the peak flow stresses increased along with an increase in the strain rate and decreased as the deformation temperature increased.Based on the true stress-true strain curves, the constitutive equation was established and followed as the ε= 6.58×10-(10)[sinh(0.0113σ)]-(3.44)exp(-245481.3/RT). The processing map exhibited the "unsafe" region at the strain rate of10 s^-1 and the temperature of 850 ℃,and the rest region was "safe". The deformation microstructure demonstrated that both dynamic recovery(DRV) and dynamic recrystallization(DRX) existed during deformation. At the lower strain rate of 0.01 s^-1, the main deformation mechanism was the DRV, and the DRX was the dominant deformation mechanism at the higher strain rate of 1.00 s^-1.

文摘The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the effects of asphalt concrete types on the microstructural characteristics at high-temperature. Suspend-dense structure and Skeleton-dense structure were selected to investigate the deformation of pavement at meso-scale. The internal microstructures of typical asphalt concretes, AC, SUP and SMA, were scanned by X-ray CT device, and microstructural changes before and after high-temperature damage were researched by digital image processing. Adaptive threshold segmentation algorithm(ATSA) based on image radius was developed and utilized to obtain the binary images of aggregates, air-voids and asphalt mastic. Then the shape and distribution of air-voids and aggregates were analyzed. The results show that the ATSA can distinguish the target and background effectively. Gradation and coarse aggregate size of asphalt mixtures have an obvious influence on the distribution of air-voids. The movements of aggregate particles are complex and aggregates with elliptic sharp show great rotation. The effect of gradation on microstructure during high-temperature damage promotes the research about the failure mechanism of asphalt concrete pavement.

文摘Results of an experimental and modelling study of forming processes in the AA2099 Al–Cu–Li alloy, for a wide range of temperatures, strains and strain rates, are presented. The analyses are based on tensile testing at 20 °C at a strain rate of 0.02 s-1and uniaxial compression testing in the temperature range 400–550 °C at strain rates ranging from0.001 to 100 s-1, for constant values of true strain of 0.5 and 0.9. The stability of plastic deformation and its relationship with a sensitivity of stress to strain rate are considered. The power dissipation efficiency coefficient, g(%), and the flow instability parameter, n B 0, were determined. The complex processing maps for hot working were determined and quantified, including process frames for basic forging processes: conventional forging and for near-superplastic and isothermal conditions. A significant aspect is the convergence of power dissipation when passing through the 500 °C peak.Deformation, temperature and strain-rate-dependent microstructures at 500 °C for strain rates of 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 s-1are described and analysed for the conventional die forging process frame, corresponding to 465–523 °C and strain rates of50–100 s-1.

文摘Low-cycle fatigue behavior of Ni-based superalloy GH586 with laser shock processing(LSP) was investigated. The residual stress of the specimens treated with LSP was assessed by X-ray diffraction method. The microstructure and fracture morphology were characterized by using an optical microscope(OM), a scanning electron microscope(SEM), and a transmission electron microscope(TEM). The results indicated that the maximum residual compressive stress was at about 1 mm from the shocking spot center, where the residual compressive stress was slightly lower. High density tangling dislocations, dislocation walls, and dislocation cells in the microstructure of the specimens treated with LSP effectively prevented fatigue cracks propagation. The fatigue life was roughly twice as long as that of the specimens without LSP. The fatigue crack initiation(FCI) in specimens treated with LSP was observed in the lateral section and the subsurface simultaneously. The fatigue striation in the fracture treated with LSP was narrower than that in the untreated specimens. Moreover, dimples with tear ridges were found in the fatigued zones of the LSP treated specimens, which would be caused by severe plastic deformation.

文摘The stretch formability of a low carbon steel processed by friction stir processing (FSP) was studied under biaxial loading condition applied by a miniaturized Erichsen test. One-pass FSP decreased the ferritic grain size in the processed zone from 25 μm to about 3 μm, which also caused a remarkable increase in strength values without considerable decrease in formability under uniaxial loading. A coarse-grained (CG) sample before FSP reflected a moderate formability with an Erichsen index (EI) of 2.73 mm. FSP slightly decreased the stretch formability of the sample to 2.66 ram. However, FSP increased the required punch load (FEI) due to the increased strength by grain refinement. FSP reduced considerably the roughness of the free surface of the biaxial stretched samples with reduced orange peel effect. The average roughness value (Ra) decreased from 2.90 in the CG sample down to about 0.65 μm in fine-grained (FG) sample after FSP. It can be concluded that the FG microstructure in low carbon steels sheets or plates used generally in shipbuilding provides a good balance between strength and formability.

文摘In this study, interstitial free (IF) steel plates were subjected to double-sided friction stir processing (FSP). The fine-grained structure with an average grain size of about 12 μm was obtained in tbe processed zone (PZ)with a thickness of about 2.5mm. The yield strength (325 MPa) and ultimate tensile strength (451 MPa) of FSP IF steel were significantly higher than those of base material (BM) (192 and 314 MPa), while the elongation (67.5%) almost remained unchanged compared with the BM (66.2%). The average microhardness value of the PZ was about 130 HV, 1.3 times bigher than that of the BM. In addition, the FSP IF steel showed a more positive corrosion potential and lower corrosion current density than the BM, exhibiting lower corrosion tendency and corrosion rates in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Furtbernlore, FSP IF steel exhibited higher fatigue life than the BM both in air and NaCl solution. Corrosion fatigue fracture surfaces of FSP IF steel mainly exhihited a typical transgranular fracture with fatigue striations, while the BM predominantly presented an intergranular fracture. Enhanced corrosion fatigue performance was mainly attributed to the increased resistance of nucleation and growth of fatigue cracks. The corrosion fatigue mechanism was primarily controlled by anodic dissolution under the combined effect of cyclic stress and corrosive solution.

文摘CONSPECTUS:Additive Manufacturing(AM)technology produces three-dimensional components in a layer-by-layer fashion and offers numerous advantages over conventional manufacturing processes.Driven by the growing needs of diverse industrial sectors,this technology has seen significant advances on both scientific and engineering fronts.Fusion-based processes are the mainstream techniques for AM of metallic materials.As the metals go through melting and solidification during the printing processes,the final microstructure and hence the properties of the printed components are highly sensitive to the printing conditions and can be very different from those of the feedstock.It is critical to understand the process-microstructure-property relationship for the accelerated optimization of the processing conditions and certification of the printed components.While experimentation has been used widely to acquire a mechanistic understanding of this subject matter,numerical modeling has become increasingly helpful in achieving the same purpose.In this Account,the authors review their ongoing collaborative effort to establish a multiphysics modeling framework to predict the process-microstructure-property relationship in fusion-based metal AM processes.The framework includes three individual modules to simulate the dominating physics that dictate the process dynamics and microstructure evolution during printing as well as the responses of the printed microstructure to specific mechanical loadings.The process model uses the material properties and processing conditions as the inputs and simulates the laser-material interaction,multiphase thermo-fluid flow,and fluid-driven powder motion.It has successfully revealed the physical causes of depression zone shape variation as well as powder motion during the laser powder bed fusion process.The microstructure model uses the thermal history of the printing process and the material chemistry as the inputs and predicts the nucleation and growth of multiple grains in the multipass and multilayer printing processes.It has been used to understand the effects of inoculation and thermal conditions on grain texture evolution.The property models use microstructure data from simulations,experimental measurements,or statistical analyses as the inputs and leverage various computational tools to predict the mechanical response of the AM materials.These models have been used to quantitatively evaluate the effects of grain structure,residual strain,and pore and void defects on their properties and performance.While this and many other modeling works have significantly grown our collective knowledge of the process-microstructure-property relationship in fusion-based metal AM processes,efforts should be further invested in developing advanced theories and algorithms for the governing physics,leveraging data-driven approaches,accelerating simulation speed,and calibrating/validating models with controlled experimental measurements,among other aspects.
