The present work aimed to study the effect of slurry conditioning on flocculant-aided filtration of coal tailings by the analysis of filtration kinetics and filter cake structure.Laboratory filtration tests of the coal tailings showed that both the shear rate and agitation time have significant effects on filtration rate and cake moisture.Moderate agitation at the shear rate of 92 s^-1 was favorable for fast filtration, but high cake moisture was encountered. The low-field 1H nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)measurements of the filter cake showed that the slurry conditioning has a significant effect on the residual water in large pores and a negligible effect on the residual water in small pores. The X-ray micro-tomography(XRM)measurements indicated that the filter cake formed at the shear rate of 92 s^-1 has more macro-pores and higher porosity than that formed at the shear rate of 53 s1,hence more residual water was entrapped in filter cake. The slurry conditioning in the presence of flocculant will change the structure of filter cake and affect the filtration performance. There was a paradox between fast filtration rate and low filter cake moisture. The findings enable better understanding of the effect of slurry conditioning on flocculant-aided filtration of coal tailings. 展开更多

Based on the high flux synchrotron X-ray of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), high precision 3D digital models of diesel nozzle tips have been established by X-ray micro-tomography technology, which reveal the internal surfaces and structures of orifices. To analyze the machining precision and characteristics of orifice processing methods, an ap- proach is presented based on the parameters of the internal structures of nozzle orifices, including the nozzle diameter, the orifice inner surface waviness, the eccentricity distance and the angle between orifices. Using this approach, two kinds of nozzle orifice processing methods, computerized numerical control drilling and electric discharge machining, have been studied and compared. The results show that this approach enables a simple, direct, and comprehensive contrastive analysis of nozzle orifice processing methods. When processing a single orifice, the electric discharge machining method has obvious advantages. However, when there are multiple orifices, the error levels of the two methods are similar in relation to the symmetry of distribution of the orifices. 展开更多

It is always desirable to know the interior deformation pattern when a rock is subjected to mechanicalload. Few experimental techniques exist that can represent full-field three-dimensional (3D) straindistribution inside a rock specimen. And yet it is crucial that this information is available for fully understandingthe failure mechanism of rocks or other geomaterials. In this study, by using the newlydeveloped digital volumetric speckle photography (DVSP) technique in conjunction with X-ray computedtomography (CT) and taking advantage of natural 3D speckles formed inside the rock due to materialimpurities and voids, we can probe the interior of a rock to map its deformation pattern under load andshed light on its failure mechanism. We apply this technique to the analysis of a red sandstone specimenunder increasing uniaxial compressive load applied incrementally. The full-field 3D displacement fieldsare obtained in the specimen as a function of the load, from which both the volumetric and the deviatoricstrain fields are calculated. Strain localization zones which lead to the eventual failure of the rock areidentified. The results indicate that both shear and tension are contributing factors to the failuremechanism. 2015 Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. A coupled approach between the conventional computational fluid dynamics platform COMSOL and an in-house-developed direct numerical simulation code DigiDiss is presented to study the dissolution kinetics of an irregular-shaped particle in a stirred cuvette. The complex flow dynamics from COMSOL were imported into DigiDiss as an initial flow condition.A digitised 3D particle structure scanned and reconstructed by X-ray micro-tomography was used in the dissolution simulation.A quantitative assessment of the simulation results was made using as a reference experimental data and a theoretical calculation based on the shrinking spherical model with different flow velocity profiles near the particle. The comprehensive agreement demonstrates the coherence of the simulation method in reproducing the experimental behaviour and is seen as a step closer towards developing a computer software design aide to help with formulation development. 展开更多
