Unveiling micro-scale mechanisms of in-situ silicon alloying for tailoring mechanical properties in titanium alloys:Experiments and computational modeling

Titanium-silicon(Ti-Si)alloy system shows significant potential for aerospace and automotive applications due to its superior specific strength,creep resistance,and oxidation resistance.For Si-containing Ti alloys,the sufficient content of Si is critical for achieving these favorable performances,while excessive Si addition will result in mechanical brittleness.Herein,both physical experiments and finite element(FE)simulations are employed to investigate the micro-mechanisms of Si alloying in tailoring the mechanical properties of Ti alloys.Four typical states of Si-containing Ti alloys(solid solution state,hypoeutectoid state,near-eutectoid state,hypereutectoid state)with varying Si content(0.3-1.2 wt.%)were fabricated via in-situ alloying spark plasma sintering.Experimental results indicate that in-situ alloying of 0.6 wt.%Si enhances the alloy’s strength and ductility simultaneously due to the formation of fine and uniformly dispersed Ti_(5)Si_(3)particles,while higher content of Si(0.9 and 1.2 wt.%)results in coarser primary Ti_(5)Si_(3)agglomerations,deteriorating the ductility.FE simulations support these findings,highlighting the finer and more uniformly distributed Ti_(5)Si_(3)particles contribute to less stress concentration and promote uniform deformation across the matrix,while agglomerated Ti_(5)Si_(3)particles result in increased local stress concentrations,leading to higher chances of particle fracture and reduced ductility.This study not only elucidates the micro-mechanisms of in-situ Si alloying for tailoring the mechanical properties of Ti alloys but also aids in optimizing the design of high-performance Si-containing Ti alloys. 展开更多

This study conducted the experimental investigation of aerodynamic heating of Micro-scale Rotational Shearing Flow with Axial Limited-Length(MRSFALL).The temperature riseof the stator is captured by the high response thermocouples.The eccentricity ratio and clearanceheight are guaranteed by means of instantaneous trajectory and torsion monitoring of the rotator.The result shows that the maximum temperature rise takes place upstream of the minimum clear-ance height along circumferential direction.The distribution of temperature rise presents asymmet-ric curve along axial direction,and peak value occurs near the dimensionless axial position of-0.18.The effect of aerodynamic heating becomes notable as the rotational speed is larger than3×10^(4)r/min.The effect of end leakage and the viscous dissipation have great impact on temper-ature rise of MRSFALL.More specially,the peak value of temperature rise at dimensionless clear-ance height of 0.0080 is larger than the case at dimensionless clearance height of 0.0044.Furthermore,when the eccentricity ratio is too large,the viscous dissipation is induced,and theadditional temperature rise is achieved.The heat flux identification of shear flow has been realizedby Sequential Function Specification Method(SFSM)and its estimation of thermal load has been given.The heat flux induced by the aerodynamic heating in this study varies from 950 W/m^(2)to1330 W/m^(2). 展开更多

Geomaterials with inferior hydraulic and strength characteristics often need improvement to enhance their engineering behaviors.Traditional ground improvement techniques require enormous mechanical effort or synthetic chemicals.Sustainable stabilization technique such as microbially induced calcite precipitation(MICP)utilizes bacterial metabolic processes to precipitate cementitious calcium carbonate.The reactive transport of biochemical species in the soil mass initiates the precipitation of biocement during the MICP process.The precipitated biocement alters the hydro-mechanical performance of the soil mass.Usually,the flow,deformation,and transport phenomena regulate the biocementation technique via coupled bio-chemo-hydro-mechanical(BCHM)processes.Among all,one crucial phenomenon controlling the precipitation mechanism is the encapsulation of biomass by calcium carbonate.Biomass encapsulation can potentially reduce the biochemical reaction rate and decelerate biocementation.Laboratory examination of the encapsulation process demands a thorough analysis of associated coupled effects.Despite this,a numerical model can assist in capturing the coupled processes influencing encapsulation during the MICP treatment.However,most numerical models did not consider biochemical reaction rate kinetics accounting for the influence of bacterial encapsulation.Given this,the current study developed a coupled BCHM model to evaluate the effect of encapsulation on the precipitated calcite content using a micro-scale semiempirical relationship.Firstly,the developed BCHM model was verified and validated using numerical and experimental observations of soil column tests.Later,the encapsulation phenomenon was investigated in the soil columns of variable maximum calcite crystal sizes.The results depict altered reaction rates due to the encapsulation phenomenon and an observable change in the precipitated calcite content for each maximum crystal size.Furthermore,the permeability and deformation of the soil mass were affected by the simultaneous precipitation of calcium carbonate.Overall,the present study comprehended the influence of the encapsulation of bacteria on cement morphology-induced permeability,biocement-induced stresses and displacements. 展开更多

The simulation performance over complex building clusters of a wind simulation model(Wind Information Field Fast Analysis model, WIFFA) in a micro-scale air pollutant dispersion model system(Urban Microscale Air Pollution dispersion Simulation model, UMAPS) is evaluated using various wind tunnel experimental data including the CEDVAL(Compilation of Experimental Data for Validation of Micro-Scale Dispersion Models) wind tunnel experiment data and the NJU-FZ experiment data(Nanjing University-Fang Zhuang neighborhood wind tunnel experiment data). The results show that the wind model can reproduce the vortexes triggered by urban buildings well, and the flow patterns in urban street canyons and building clusters can also be represented. Due to the complex shapes of buildings and their distributions, the simulation deviations/discrepancies from the measurements are usually caused by the simplification of the building shapes and the determination of the key zone sizes. The computational efficiencies of different cases are also discussed in this paper. The model has a high computational efficiency compared to traditional numerical models that solve the Navier–Stokes equations, and can produce very high-resolution(1–5 m) wind fields of a complex neighborhood scale urban building canopy(~ 1 km ×1km) in less than 3 min when run on a personal computer. 展开更多

Cardiac injury initiates repair mechanisms and results in cardiac remodeling and fi-brosis,which appears to be a leading cause of cardiovascular diseases.Cardiac fi-brosis is characterized by the accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins,mainly collagen in the cardiac interstitium.Many experimental studies have demonstrated that fibrotic injury in the heart is reversible;therefore,it is vital to understand differ-ent molecular mechanisms that are involved in the initiation,progression,and resolu-tion of cardiac fibrosis to enable the development of antifibrotic agents.Of the many experimental models,one of the recent models that has gained renewed interest is isoproterenol(ISP)-induced cardiac fibrosis.ISP is a synthetic catecholamine,sympa-thomimetic,and nonselectiveβ-adrenergic receptor agonist.The overstimulated and sustained activation ofβ-adrenergic receptors has been reported to induce biochemi-cal and physiological alterations and ultimately result in cardiac remodeling.ISP has been used for decades to induce acute myocardial infarction.However,the use of low doses and chronic administration of ISP have been shown to induce cardiac fibrosis;this practice has increased in recent years.Intraperitoneal or subcutaneous ISP has been widely used in preclinical studies to induce cardiac remodeling manifested by fibrosis and hypertrophy.The induced oxidative stress with subsequent perturbations in cellular signaling cascades through triggering the release of free radicals is consid-ered the initiating mechanism of myocardial fibrosis.ISP is consistently used to induce fibrosis in laboratory animals and in cardiomyocytes isolated from animals.In recent years,numerous phytochemicals and synthetic molecules have been evaluated in ISP-induced cardiac fibrosis.The present review exclusively provides a comprehensive summary of the pathological biochemical,histological,and molecular mechanisms of ISP in inducing cardiac fibrosis and hypertrophy.It also summarizes the application of this experimental model in the therapeutic evaluation of natural as well as syn-thetic compounds to demonstrate their potential in mitigating myocardial fibrosis and hypertrophy. 展开更多

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders are neuroinflammatory demyelinating disorders that lead to permanent visual loss and motor dysfunction.To date,no effective treatment exists as the exact causative mechanism remains unknown.Therefore,experimental models of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders are essential for exploring its pathogenesis and in screening for therapeutic targets.Since most patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders are seropositive for IgG autoantibodies against aquaporin-4,which is highly expressed on the membrane of astrocyte endfeet,most current experimental models are based on aquaporin-4-IgG that initially targets astrocytes.These experimental models have successfully simulated many pathological features of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders,such as aquaporin-4 loss,astrocytopathy,granulocyte and macrophage infiltration,complement activation,demyelination,and neuronal loss;however,they do not fully capture the pathological process of human neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders.In this review,we summarize the currently known pathogenic mechanisms and the development of associated experimental models in vitro,ex vivo,and in vivo for neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders,suggest potential pathogenic mechanisms for further investigation,and provide guidance on experimental model choices.In addition,this review summarizes the latest information on pathologies and therapies for neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders based on experimental models of aquaporin-4-IgG-seropositive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders,offering further therapeutic targets and a theoretical basis for clinical trials. 展开更多

In the scenario of a steam generator tube rupture accident in a lead-cooled fast reactor,secondary circuit subcooled water under high pressure is injected into an ordinary-pressure primary vessel,where a molten lead-based alloy(typically pure lead or lead-bismuth eutectic(LBE))is used as the coolant.To clarify the pressure build-up characteristics under water-jet injection,this study conducted several experiments by injecting pressurized water into a molten LBE pool at Sun Yat-sen University.To obtain a further understanding,several new experimental parameters were adopted,including the melt temperature,water subcooling,injection pressure,injection duration,and nozzle diameter.Through detailed analyses,it was found that the pressure and temperature during the water-melt interaction exhibited a consistent variation trend with our previous water-droplet injection mode LBE experiment.Similarly,the existence of a steam explosion was confirmed,which typically results in a much stronger pressure build-up.For the non-explosion cases,increasing the injection pressure,melt-pool temperature,nozzle diameter,and water subcooling promoted pressure build-up in the melt pool.However,a limited enhancement effect was observed when increasing the injection duration,which may be owing to the continually rising pressure in the interaction vessel or the isolation effect of the generated steam cavity.Regardless of whether a steam explosion occurred,the calculated mechanical and kinetic energy conversion efficiencies of the melt were relatively small(not exceeding 4.1%and 0.7%,respectively).Moreover,the range of the conversion efficiency was similar to that of previous water-droplet experiments,although the upper limit of the jet mode was slightly lower. 展开更多

This study aimed to investigate the moment redistribution in continuous glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP)-concrete composite slabs caused by concrete cracking and steel bar yielding in the negative bending moment zone.An experimental bending moment redistribution test was conducted on continuous GFRP-concrete composite slabs,and a calculation method based on the conjugate beam method was proposed.The composite slabs were formed by combining GFRP profiles with a concrete layer and supported on steel beams to create two-span continuous composite slab specimens.Two methods,epoxy resin bonding,and stud connection,were used to connect the composite slabs with the steel beams.The experimental findings showed that the specimen connected with epoxy resin exhibited two moments redistribution phenomena during the loading process:concrete cracking and steel bar yielding at the internal support.In contrast,the composite slab connected with steel beams by studs exhibited only one-moment redistribution phenomenon throughout the loading process.As the concrete at the internal support cracked,the bending moment decreased in the internal support section and increased in the midspan section.When the steel bars yielded,the bending moment further decreased in the internal support section and increased in the mid-span section.Since GFRP profiles do not experience cracking,there was no significant decrease in the bending moment of the mid-span section.All test specimens experienced compressive failure of concrete at the mid-span section.Calculation results showed good agreement between the calculated and experimental values of bending moments in the mid-span section and internal support section.The proposed model can effectively predict the moment redistribution behavior of continuous GFRP-concrete composite slabs. 展开更多

Based on simplified calculations of one-dimensional wave systems,loading pressure platform curves of Al-Cu gradient materials(GMs)impactor were designed.The Al-Cu GMs were prepared using tape-pressing sintering,and their acoustic properties were characterized to match the design path.The parallelism of the Al-Cu GM was confirmed using a three-dimensional surface profilometry machine.A one-stage light-gas gun was used to launch the Al-Cu GM,impacting an Al-LiF target at a velocity of 400 m/s.The results of the experimental strain rate demonstrate that the Al-Cu GMs can realize the precise control of the strain rate within the range of 10^(4)‒10^(5)/s in the high-speed impact experiments. 展开更多

In this work,the selected icebreaker model experiment is performed in a towing tank.We focus on the influence of seawater salinity on ship ice resistance in the ice floe field and the innovative ice model and ship model test technology,including the similitude rule of ship model tests,test principles,and validation with full-scale ship data.A formula for calculating the relationship between the temperature and salinity of the water is constructed,which can be used to simulate the role of seawater in freshwater ice pools.On this basis,the effect of salinity on the resistance of ships sailing in broken ice fields is studied.A technique in which artificial ice made of polyethylene spheres is used to simulate ice resistance is proposed.With a series of ship model experiments in spherical and triangular ice fields,the effects of salinity and velocity on the ice resistance test of the ship model are analyzed.A relationship of the ice resistance of the ship model to the spherical ice field and the triangular ice field is proposed.The conversion results are consistent with onsite data of the full-size ship,which verifies the method of converting the test results of the ship model to the prototype. 展开更多

The solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)layer,formed on the electrode through electrolyte decomposition,has garnered significant attention over the past several decades.Numerous characterization studies have shown that the SEI enhances the stability of both the electrolyte and electrode,particularly by mitigating the well-known cation-solvent co-intercalation in graphite electrodes in lithium-ion batteries.However,recent electrolyte exchange experiments have revealed that variations in electrolyte solvation structure and the resulting desolvation behaviors play a more dominant role than the SEI in influencing electrolyte and electrode stability,which in turn critically impacts battery performance.In addition to contributing to the ongoing debate,electrolyte exchange experiments have proven to be a valuable tool for analyzing failures in electrolytes,electrodes,and batteries.This review highlights the application of electrolyte exchange experiments across various metal-ion batteries,incorporating diverse combinations of electrolytes and electrodes.It examines the influence of electrolyte solvation structures and desolvation behaviors on the stability of both electrolytes and electrodes.The aim is to enhance the methodology of electrolyte exchange experiments to deepen the understanding of the molecular interactions among metal ions,anions,and solvents within the electrolyte.This approach complements existing insights into SEI effects,providing a more thorough and accurate framework for battery failure analysis. 展开更多

Role of IgE cells in the exacerbation and management of asthma:An experimental study

BACKGROUND IgE plays a critical role in allergic inflammation and asthma pathogenesis.This study investigates the involvement of IgE cells in asthma exacerbation and evaluates the effectiveness of targeted interventions.AIM To evaluate the role of IgE in the exacerbation of allergic asthma and to determine the clinical efficacy of anti-IgE therapy in improving disease outcomes.Specifically,the study investigates changes in serum IgE levels,lung function,asthma control scores,and the frequency of acute exacerbations among patients receiving standard therapy with or without anti-IgE intervention.METHODS A total of 200 patients diagnosed with moderate to severe asthma were enrolled in this experimental study conducted from April 2024 to April 2025.Participants were randomized to receive either standard asthma therapy or therapy combined with anti-IgE agents.IgE levels and asthma control parameters were monitored.RESULTS Participants receiving anti-IgE treatment demonstrated a significant reduction in serum IgE levels(P<0.001),improved Forced expiratory volume in one second scores,and fewer exacerbation episodes compared to the control group.CONCLUSION IgE cells significantly contribute to asthma severity,and targeted therapy against IgE can improve disease outcomes.These findings underscore the importance of immunomodulatory strategies in asthma management. 展开更多

Background:QiShenYiQi(QSYQ)is commonly accepted to treat ischemic stroke(IS)in clinical settings,yet the underlying mechanism of action of QSYQ is largely unknown.Methods:By combining systems pharmacology with experimental assessment,we examined the key targets,bioactive components,and mechanisms of QSYQ against IS.Results:Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform predicted a total number of 254 targets that were potentially related to QSYQ,whereas 699 targets associated with IS were gathered from Therapeutic Target Database,Comparative Toxicogenomics Database,Gene Cards,Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man,and National Center for Biotechnology Information databases,and 83 of these targets overlap with QSYQ-related targets.Importantly,through the analysis of Gene Ontology functional annotation,Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment,and protein-protein interaction network,we identified 20 related signaling pathways along with 4 hub genes.Subsequently,our molecular docking results revealed that QSYQ might interact with PTGS2,PTGS1,SCN5A,and HSP90AB1.We observed dose-dependent beneficial effects of QSYQ in significantly improving neurological function and alleviating histopathological damage in middle cerebral artery occlusion model,while decreasing infarct volume.Notablely,QSYQ markedly downregulates tumor necrosis factor-α,interleukin-6,and interleukin-1 beta.Overall,this study demonstrates the synergetic effects of QSYQ on regulating multi-targets in IS through inhibiting inflammatory processes and neuronal apoptosis,these findings may expand the understanding of QSYQ and provide guidance for its clinical application in treating IS.Conclusion:Current study reveals the protective roles of QSYQ against IS through modulating PTGS2/PTGS1/SCN5A/HSP90AB1 and TNF signaling pathways. 展开更多

A new experimental method is developed to investigate the effect of dissolved substances on the evaporation rate of small water droplets suspended in the atmosphere.The laboratory setup is based on converting a generated droplet jet of complex structure into a directed flow of evaporating droplets falling in a vertical tube.Images of falling droplets captured by a high-speed camera through a window in the vertical channel wall are used to determine the sizes and velocities of individual droplets.The computational modeling of droplet motion and evaporation proved useful at all stages of the experimental work:from selecting the position of the vertical channel to processing the experimental data.It was found that even a 0.1%mass concentration of the dissolved ionic salt KCl has a considerable effect on decreasing the evaporation rate of the droplets.In contrast,a typical fungicide with a mass concentration of 2.5%has only a slight impact on the evaporation rate.The laboratory results enabled the authors to refine the evaporation model of water droplets to account for the presence of dissolved substances.Modified models of this type are expected to be useful in controling crop spraying and also in other potential applications. 展开更多

A spice formulation study in Burkina Faso was carried out using local ingredients for the benefit of households. The objective of this study was to propose some spice formulations based on local ingredients in order to reduce the use of chemical spices in the preparation of different dishes. The Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology was used for the formulation of the spices and their physicochemical, nutritional and sensory characteristics were evaluated by standardized and standard methods. The results obtained showed lipid contents (g/100 g DM) ranging from 10.41 ± 0.26 to 15.64 ± 0.68, total sugars from 4.39 ± 0.32 to 5.46 ± 0.31, protein from 3.65 ± 0.17 to 12.04 ± 0.35 and ash from 5.83 ± 0.01 to 7.02 ± 0.01. The polyphenol content ranged from 9.09 ± 1.60 to 11.33 ± 0.90, and the flavonoid content ranged from 0.65 ± 0.03 to 1.08 ± 0.13. The sensory analysis carried out showed that the spices have generally satisfactory organoleptic characteristics. These results constitute new information in the diet of populations and are an alternative to the chemical spices used in their cooking. 展开更多

Cavitation is an unavoidable phenomenon in the operation of centrifugal pumps.Prolonged cavitation can cause significant damage to the components of the flow channel,and in severe cases,it may even interfere with the normal energy exchange processes within the pump.Therefore,effective monitoring of cavitation in centrifugal pumps is crucial.This article presents a study that approaches the issue from an acoustic perspective,using experimental methods to gather and analyze acoustic data at the inlet and outlet of centrifugal pumps across various flow rates,with hydrophones as the primary measuring instruments.Results show that flow rate significantly affects noise levels in both non-cavitation and mild cavitation stages,with noise increasing as the flow rate rises.As the cavitation margin(NPSHa)decreases,inlet and outlet noise trends diverge:inlet noise drops sharply,while outlet noise initially increases before sharply decreasing.Both exhibit a distinct zone of abrupt change,where NPSHa values offer earlier cavitation detection than traditional methods.The noise at the pump’s inlet and outlet primarily consists of discrete and broadband noise,with most energy concentrated at discrete frequencies—shaft frequency(24 Hz),blade frequency(144 Hz),and their harmonics.As NPSHa decreases,the inlet’s discrete and broadband noise frequencies decline,while they increase at the outlet.Monitoring changes in these spectrum characteristics provides an additional means of predicting cavitation onset. 展开更多
