To achieve high quality factor and high-sensitivity refractive index sensor,a slot micro-ring resonator(MRR)based on asymmetric Fabry-Perot(FP)cavity was proposed.The structure consisted of a pair of elliptical holes to form an FP cavity and a microring resonator.The two different optical modes generated by the micro-ring resonator were destructively interfered to form a Fano line shape,which improved the system sensitivity while obtaining a higher quality factor and extinction ratio.The transmission principle of the structure was analyzed by the transfer matrix method.The transmission spectrum and mode field distribution of the proposed structure were simulated by the finite difference time domain(FDTD)method,and the key structural parameters affecting the Fano line shape in the device were optimized.The simulation results show that the quality factor of the device reached 22037.1,and the extinction ratio was 23.9 dB.By analyzing the refractive index sensing characteristics,the sensitivity of the structure was 354 nm·RIU−1,and the detection limit of the sensitivity was 2×10−4 RIU.Thus,the proposed compact asymmetric FP cavity slot micro-ring resonator has obvious advantages in sensing applications owing to its excellent performance. 展开更多

We demonstrate a highly compact third-order elliptical micro-ring add-drop filter based on a silicon-on-insulator wafer. The elliptical micro-ring resonator has a major radius of 6μm (minor radius of 4.112μm) and a large free spectral range of 18 nm. Experimental results show a box-like channel dropping response, which has a 3 dB bandwidth of -2.7nm, high out-of-band signal rejection of around 40dB and a very low drop loss (〈0.5dB). Simulation agrees well with the experiments. The footprint of the whole chip is only 0.0003mm2. 展开更多

In this paper, bendloss characteristics of an optical fibre are investigated in detail, and the results show that the resonator with a smaller ring radius, wider free spectrum range (FSR), higher fineness (f) and quality-factor (Q) can be achieved by using microfibres. Based on the improved fused taper technique, a high-quality microfibre with 5 ttm radius has been fabricated, and an all-fibre micro-ring resonator with a radius of only 500μm is realized using self-coiling coupling method. The good-resonant characteristic makes the all-fibre device be expected to avoid bendloss and connection loss associated with planar waveguide integration. 展开更多

A nonlinear integrated optical platform that allows the fabrication of waveguide circuits with different material composition,and at small dimensions,offers advantages in terms of field enhancement and increased interaction length,thereby facilitating the observation of nonlinear optics effects at a much lower power level.To enhance the nonlinearity of the conventional waveguide structure,in this work,we propose and demonstrate a microstructured waveguide where silicon rich layer is embedded in the core of the conventional waveguide in order to increase its nonlinearity.By embedding a 20 nm thin film of silicon nanocrystal(Si-nc),we achieve a twofold increase of the nonlinear parameter,γ.The linear relationship between the fourwave mixing conversion efficiency and pump power reveals the negligible nonlinear absorption and small dispersion in the micro-ring resonators.This simple approach of embedding an ultra-thin Si-nc layer into conventional high-index doped silica dramatically increases its nonlinear performance,and could potentially find applications in all-optical processing functions. 展开更多

Compact Optical Add-Drop De-Multiplexers with Cascaded Micro-Ring Resonators on SOI

A four-channel integrated optical wavelength de-multiplexer is experimentally illustrated on a silicon-on-insulator (SO1) substrate. With the aid of cascaded micro-ring resonators, the whole performance of the wavelength de- multiplexer is improved, such as 3 dB bandwidth and channel crosstalk. Based on the transform matrix theory, a four-channel wavelength de-multiplexer with average channel spacing 4.5±0.5 nm (3 dB bandwidth - 2 ± 0.5 nm) is demonstrated at telecommunication bands. For each channel, the extinction at the adjacent channel is below -39dB and the out-of-band rejection ratio is up to 40dB. The channel dropping loss is below 5dB in the five FSR spectral response periods (near 100 nm). 展开更多

We propose an on-chip reconfigurable micro-ring to engineer the spectral-purity of photons.The micro-ring resonator is designed to be coupled by one or two asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers and the coupling coefficients hence the quality-factors of the pump and the converted photons can be dynamically changed by the interferometer’s internal phase-shifter.We calculate the joint-spectrum function and obtain the spectral-purity of photons and Schmidt number under different phases.We show that it is a dynamical method to adjust the spectral-purity and can optimize the spectralpurity of photons up to near 100%.The condition for high-spectral-purity photons is ensured by the micro-ring itself,so it overcomes the trade-off between spectral purity and brightness in the traditional post-filtering method.This scheme is robust to fabrication variations and can be successfully applied in different fabrication labs and different materials.Such high-spectral-purity photons will be beneficial for quantum information processing like Boson sampling and other quantum algorithms. 展开更多

On-chip multidimensional multiplexing has shown considerable potential for enhancing transmission capacity and developing communication networks in integrated optical systems.Micro-ring resonators,which utilize the wavelength-dependent whispering gallery resonance mechanism and feature customizable cavity lengths,offer inherent advantages for accurate wavelength filtering.These characteristics make them promising candidates for wavelength multiplexers.However,a significant challenge arises from the mismatch in the effective refractive index between orthogonal linear polarizations,which introduces complexities to polarization channel multiplexing and impedes progress in on-chip multidimensional multiplexing that integrates both wavelength and polarization channels.In this work,we propose a double-layer adiabatic structureconnected micro-ring resonator(AMRR)with vertical refractive index asymmetry,demonstrating its utility in multidimensional(de)multiplexers.Our approach enables polarization division multiplexing(PDM)by facilitating polarization rotation between transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations through polarization hybridization.The(de)multiplexing of both wavelength and polarization channels is achieved by controlling the incident light direction and filtering the resonance wavelength within the micro-ring resonator.As a proof of concept,we successfully transmitted 144 Gbit/s QPSK-OFDM signals and achieved bit error rates below the forward error correction threshold at-19 d Bm using the proposed multidimensional(de)multiplexer,which accommodates 3 wavelengths and 2 polarizations.Our design,which leverages the AMRR for simultaneous(de)multiplexing of wavelength and polarization channels,not only overcomes the limitation of traditional micro-ring resonators in implementing PDM,but also reduces the footprint of the multidimensional(de)multiplexer to 27μm×219μm,an order of magnitude smaller compared to conventional designs. 展开更多

In this paper, we review our recent work on linear all-optical signal processing applications using silicon MRRs as passive filters. We focus on applications such as modulation format conversion, differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) demodulation, modulation speed enhancement of directly modulated lasers (DMLs), and monocycle pulse generation. The possibility to implement polarization diversity circuits, which reduce the polarization dependence of standard silicon MRRs, is illustrated on the particular example of DPSK demodulation. 展开更多

By adjusting the polarization controller between the PM and the MRR, the filtering function of the MPF can be switched between a band-stop filter and a band-pass filter. In a proof-of-concept experiment, an MPF with a rejection ratio of 30 dB(or 15 dB) for the band-stop(or band-pass) response and a frequency tuning range from 9.6 to 20.5 GHz is achieved. 展开更多

In this work, the behavior of refractive index sensors based on optical micro-ring resonators is studied in detail. Using a result of waveguide perturbation theory in combination with numerical simulations, the optimum design parameters of the system, maximizing the sensitivity of the sensor, are determined. It is found that, when optimally designed, the sensor can detect relative refractive index changes of the order of △n/n≈3×10^-4, assuming that the experimental setup can detect relative wavelength shifts of the order of △λ/λ≈3×10^-5. The behavior of the system as bio-sensor has also been examined. It is found that, when optimally designed, the system can detect refractive index changes of the order of △n≈ 10^-3 for a layer thickness of t=- 10 nm, and changes in the layer thickness of the order of △t≈0.24 nm, for a refractive index change of △n=0.05. 展开更多

A highly efficient tunable optical filter of liquid crystal (LC) optical micro-r/rig resonator (MRR) was proposed. The 4-pro-radius ring consists of a silicon-on- insulator (SOI) asymmetric bent slot waveguide with a LC cladding. The geometry of the slot waveguide resulted in the strong electro-optic effect of the LC, and therefore induced an increase in effective refractive index by 0.0720 for the quasi-TE mode light in the slot-waveguide. The ultra-wide tuning range (56.0 nm) and large free spectral range (FSR) (-28.0nm) of the optical filters enabled wavelength reconfigurable multiplexing devices with a drive voltage of only 5 V. The influences of parameters, such as the slot width, total width of Si rails and slot shift on the device's performance, were analyzed and the optimal design was given. Moreover, the influence of fabrication tolerances and the loss of device were both investigated. Compared with state-of-the-art tunable MRRs, the proposed electrically tunable micro-ring resonator owns the excellent features of wider tuning ranges, larger FSRs and ultralow voltages. 展开更多

In this Letter, a micro-ring resonator laser used for gas sensing is experimentally demonstrated. The multi-quantumwells micro-ring laser based on whispering-gallery modes with an annular resonator and an output waveguide was fabricated. A single-mode laser with a wavelength of 1746.4 nm was fabricated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge,experimentally. The output power of 1.65 m W under 40 m A injection current was obtained with a side-mode suppression ratio over 33 d B. 展开更多

An ultra-small integrated photonic circuit has been proposed,which incorporates a high-quality-factor passive micro-ring resonator(MR) linked to a vertical grating coupler on a standard silicon-on-insulator(SOI) substrate.The experimental results demonstrate that the MR propagation loss is 0.532 dB/cm with a 10μm radius ring resonator,the intrinsic quality factor is as high as 202.000,the waveguide grating wavelength response curve is a 1 dB bandwidth of 40 nm at 1540 nm telecommunication wavelengths,and the measured fiber-to-fiber coupling loss is 10 dB.Furthermore,the resonator wavelength temperature dependence of the 450 nm wide micro-ring resonator is 54.1 pm/℃.Such vertical grating coupler and low loss MR-integrated components greatly promote a key element in biosensors and high-speed interconnect communication applications. 展开更多

The mechanism is based on a silicon–SiO_2–graphene capacitor on top of the ring waveguide. We show the capacitive actuation of the add/drop functionality by a voltage-driven change of the graphene optical absorption. The proposed capacitive solution overcomes the need for continuous heating to keep tuned the filter's in/out resonance and therefore eliminates "in operation" energy consumption. 展开更多

To enhance the quality factor and sensitivity of refractive index sensors,a feedback waveguide slot grating micro-ring resonator was proposed.An air-hole grating structure was introduced based on the slot micro-ring,utilizing the reflection of the grating to achieve the electromagnetic-like induced transparency effect at different wavelengths.The high slope characteristics of the EIT-like effect enabled a higher quality factor and sensitivity.The transmission principle of the structure was analyzed using the transmission matrix method,and the transmission spectrum and mode field distribution were simulated using the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD)method,and the device structure parameters were adjusted for optimization.Simulation results show that the proposed structure achieves an EIT-like effect with a quality factor of 59267.5.In the analysis of refractive index sensing characteristics,the structure exhibits a sensitivity of 408.57 nm/RIU and a detection limit of 6.23×10^(-5) RIU.Therefore,the proposed structure achieved both a high quality factor and refractive index sensitivity,demonstrating excellent sensing performance for applications in environmental monitoring,biomedical fields,and other areas with broad market potential. 展开更多

可调谐量子级联激光器(Quantum Cascade Laser,QCL)在自由空间光通信、光谱检测等领域具有重要的应用前景。然而针对分布式反馈QCL存在的掩埋光栅二次外延工艺繁琐、表面光栅耦合效果不佳,以及光栅耦合不利于器件集成化、微型化等问题,... 可调谐量子级联激光器(Quantum Cascade Laser,QCL)在自由空间光通信、光谱检测等领域具有重要的应用前景。然而针对分布式反馈QCL存在的掩埋光栅二次外延工艺繁琐、表面光栅耦合效果不佳,以及光栅耦合不利于器件集成化、微型化等问题,提出利用硅基锗集成波导与F-P腔QCL混合集成来实现波长可调谐和窄线宽输出的方案,对中心波长4.6μm的可调谐QCL的硅基集成外腔部分进行了设计优化。通过时域有限差分法仿真,系统地分析了微环谐振器半径、耦合长度和耦合间隔等结构参数对中心波长偏移和透射率的影响。研究表明,微环谐振器耦合间隔的减小会显著影响输出光谱透射率和耦合系数,而耦合长度的增加则会影响输出光谱透射率并使中心波长向长波方向移动。此外,分析了Sagnac环形反射镜的耦合间隔对耦合系数和反射率的影响,结果表明耦合间隔的减小会导致反射率的增加。最后通过改变波导材料有效折射率,仿真模拟了调谐性能。最终确定当自由光谱范围为20 nm、线宽为0.18 nm时的微环谐振器的半径为41.5μm,耦合长度为4μm,耦合间隔为0.15μm;反射率为0.7时的反射镜的耦合长度为60μm,耦合间隔为0.345μm,相关参数和研究结论为实际器件制备提供了理论依据。 展开更多

提出并仿真实现了一种基于光子晶体微环腔模式分裂效应的角度传感方法。通过对微环腔内径进行正弦调制,能够有效控制模式分裂的形成和调整其大小。仿真结果显示,在微环腔转动时,耦合输出的反射谱发生规律性偏移,且在周期性角度内呈现唯... 提出并仿真实现了一种基于光子晶体微环腔模式分裂效应的角度传感方法。通过对微环腔内径进行正弦调制,能够有效控制模式分裂的形成和调整其大小。仿真结果显示,在微环腔转动时,耦合输出的反射谱发生规律性偏移,且在周期性角度内呈现唯一性,在间隔周期角度时呈现出重复性,结合这两个规律性质可实现在全周角范围内的角度传感。此外,研究还探讨了调制幅度和微腔外径对角度传感性能的影响。在调制幅度为2.5~400 nm的范围内,随着调制幅度的增大,角度传感灵敏度呈现先增后减的趋势,且在调制幅度为200 nm时达到最大,角度传感灵敏度为0.081/°。同样,在外径为2.8~3.6μm的范围内,随着外径的增加,角度传感灵敏度也呈现先增后减的趋势,并在外径为3.1μm时达到最大值,角度传感灵敏度为0.115/°。所设计的传感装置结构紧凑、易于集成,制造成本低,具备抗电磁干扰以及抗环境干扰能力,适用于精密传感和微纳设备的集成应用。 展开更多

为了解决Tolansky干涉微小角度测量过程依赖动镜测量臂臂长的问题,提出了一种双臂Tolansky干涉自准直测角方案,针对其中分光镜厚度对测角准确性的影响,利用几何光学的单折射球面公式和过渡公式分析了分光镜厚度影响下的虚拟点光源位置,... 为了解决Tolansky干涉微小角度测量过程依赖动镜测量臂臂长的问题,提出了一种双臂Tolansky干涉自准直测角方案,针对其中分光镜厚度对测角准确性的影响,利用几何光学的单折射球面公式和过渡公式分析了分光镜厚度影响下的虚拟点光源位置,建立了包含分光镜厚度和折射率的圆心偏转量与偏转角之间的关系,通过虚拟仿真和实体实验相结合的方式详细考察了分光镜厚度对测角准确性的影响.结果显示,分光镜厚度不同会影响初始圆心的位置;随着分光镜厚度的增大,不同角度下,仿真测量结果与含厚度因素关系式理论值的相对偏差在±0.5%以内;在同一角度下,所建立的含厚度因素关系式与不含厚度因素关系式的差值逐渐增大.在1 mm分光镜的厚度下,以已标定自准直仪所测导轨数据为准,所建立的含厚度因素关系式与不含厚度因素关系式的相对误差仅为0.22%.本文结果为这种新型自准直仪的深度研究和开发提供了重要的指导. 展开更多
