The linear stability condition of the model is obtained by using the linear stability theory. Through nonlinear analysis, a modified Korteweg-de Vries equation is constructed and solved. The traffic jam can thus be described by the klnk-antikink soliton solution for the mKdV equation. The improvement of this new model over the previous ones lies in the fact that it not only theoretically retains many strong points of the previous ones, but also performs more realistically than others in the dynamical evolution of congestion. Furthermore, numerical simulation of traffic dynamics shows that the proposed model can avoid the disadvantage of negative velocity that occurs at small sensitivity coefficients λ in the FVD model by adjusting the information on the multiple leading vehicles. No collision occurs and no unrealistic deceleration appears in the improved model.展开更多

The linear stability condition of the presented model is obtained by employing the linear stability theory. The density wave is investigated analytically with the perturbation method. The results show that the occurrence of traffic jamming transitions can be described by the kink-antikink solution of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation. The simulation results are in good agreement with the analytical results, showing that the stability of traffic flow can be enhanced when the relative current of next-nearest-neighbour sites ahead is considered.展开更多

The effect of slope on uphill/downhill highway is examined through linear stability analysis and shown that the slope significantly affects the stability region on the phase diagram.Using nonlinear stability analysis, the Burgers, Korteweg-deVries(KdV) and modified Korteweg-deVries(mKdV) equations are derived in stable, metastable and unstable region, respectively. The effect of reaction coefficient is examined and concluded that it plays an important role in suppressing the traffic jams on a gradient highway. The theoretical findings have been verified through numerical simulation which confirm that the slope on a gradient highway significantly influence the traffic dynamics and traffic jam can be suppressed efficiently by considering the optimal current difference effect in the new lattice model.展开更多

The proposed model is a higher-order continuum model considering the coupling and lane changing effects of the vehicles on two adjacent lanes. It results from integrating the Taylor series expansion of the viscous continuum traffic flow model proposed by Ge (2006 Physiea A 371 667) into the multi-lane model presented by Daganzo (1997 Transpn. Res. B 31 83). Our proposed model may be used to describe non-anisotropic behaviour because of lane changing in multi-lane traffic. A linear stability analysis is given and the neutral stability condition is obtained. Also, issues related to lane changing, shock waves and rarefaction waves, local clustering and phase transition are investigated through a simulation experiment. The simulation results show that the proposed model is capable of explaining some particular traffic phenomena commonly observable in real world traffic flow.展开更多

Macroscopic traffic flow model is first developed by Lighthill Whitham and Richards (LWR) and used to study traffic flow by collective variables such as flow rate, velocity and density. The LWR model is treated as an initial value problem and its numerical simulations are presented using numerical schemes. A variety of numerical schemes are available in literature to solve first order hyperbolic equations. Of these the well-known ones include one-dimensional explicit: Upwind, Downwind, FTCS, and Lax-Friedrichs schemes. Having been studied carefully the space and time mesh sizes, and the patterns of all these schemes, a new scheme has been developed and named as one-dimensional explicit Tolesa numerical scheme. Tolesa numerical scheme is one of the conditionally stable and highest rates of convergence schemes. All the said numerical schemes are applied to solve advection equation pertaining traffic flows. Also the one-dimensional explicit Tolesa numerical scheme is another alternative numerical scheme to solve advection equation and apply to traffic flows model like other well-known one-dimensional explicit schemes. The effect of density of cars on the overall interactions of the vehicles along a given length of the highway and time are investigated. Graphical representations of density profile, velocity profile, flux profile, and in general the fundamental diagrams of vehicles on the highway with different time levels are illustrated. These concepts and results have been arranged systematically in this paper.展开更多

Based on previous literature, the source term addresses the impact of speed difference and density difference between adjacent lanes, which provides better precision for free lane-changing simulation; the viscosity term turns lane-changing behavior to a "force" that may influence speed distribution. Using a flux-splitting scheme for the model discretization, two cases are investigated numerically. The case under a homogeneous initial condition shows that the numerical results by our model agree well with the analytical ones; the case with a small initial disturbance shows that our model can simulate the evolution of perturbation, including propagation, dissipation, cluster effect and stop-and-go phenomenon.展开更多

LC studies based on differential equation models accurately reveal LC influence on traffic environment. This paper presents a second-order partial differential equation (PDE) model that simulates both compulsive LC behavior and free LC behavior, with lane-changing source terms in the continuity equation and a lane-changing viscosity term in the momentum equation. A specific form of this model focusing on a typical compulsive LC behavior, the 'off-ramp problem', is derived. Numerical simulations are given in several cases, which are consistent with real traffic phenomenon.展开更多

In the middle of the system, there are n (n 〈 m) sub-chains via two consecutive junctions linking m sub-chains of input and m sub-chains of output, respectively. This configuration is a type of complex geometry that is relevant to many biological processes as well as to vehicular traffic flow. We use a mean-field approach to calculate this typical geometry and obtain the theoretical results for stationary particle currents, density profiles, and a phase diagram. With the values of m and n synchronously increasing, the vertical phase boundary moves toward the right and the horizontal phase boundary moves toward the upside in the phase diagram. The boundary conditions of the system as well as the numbers of input and output determine the no-equilibrium stationary states, stationary-states phases, and phase boundaries. We use the results to compare with computer simulations and find that they are in very good agreement with each other.展开更多
