To reveal the influence of coupled effects of dry-wet cycling and precompression stress(CEDWCPS)on the damage evolution of limestone with horizontal fissure(LHF),a series of degradation and uniaxial compression tests were conducted, and a corresponding piecewise damage constitutive model(PDCM)was established. We found that both dry-wet cycling and precompression stress deteriorate the physical properties, alter the microscopic characteristics, and reduce the mechanical properties of the LHF.These degradations are particularly pronounced under the CEDWCPS,although the magnitude of these changes gradually diminishes with the progression of dry-wet cycling.Meanwhile, they also reduce the deformation degree, prolong the micropore compaction stage, shorten the unstable crack propagation stage, lower the frequency and intensity of AE events, decrease the high-amplitude and high-frequency AE signals, enlarge crack scales, and shorten the crack initiation time.Among the changes of these indicators, the dry-wet cycling plays a dominant role. The crack types of LHF under the CEDWCPS(LHFCEDWCPS)are predominantly tensile cracks, supplemented by shear cracks. The failure mode can be defined as tensileshear composite failure. Finally, the established PDCM effectively captures the nonlinear deformation of micropore and the linear deformation of the matrix in LHFCEDWCPS,with all corresponding R^(2) consistently exceeding 0.97. 展开更多

Background:Human skin is affected by ultraviolet rays on a daily basis, and excessive ultraviolet radiation(UVR)can lead to sunburn erythema, tanning, photoaging, and skin tumors. The combination of Astragali Radix(AR)and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma(AAR)is a common pairing in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).According to earlier studies, they possess properties capable of alleviating the adverse impacts of UVR on the skin. However, the specific actions and underlying mechanisms require further investigation. The study aims to analyze the efficacy of AR-AAR in preventing UVR-induced skin damage and to clarify the associated molecular mechanisms. Methods:Potential signaling pathways by which AR and AAR may protect against UVR-induced skin damage were identified with network pharmacology, molecular docking techniques and molecular dynamics(MD)simulation.Except the normal group, the back skin of SD rats was exposed to 1.1 mW/cm^(2) UVA combined with 0.1 mW/cm^(2) UVB daily, and the UVR skin damage model was established.Morphological features of skin tissues of different groups were discovered through Hematoxylin and Eosin(HE)staining,Masson staining,Weigert staining.ELISA was utilized to measure the levels of reactive oxygen species(ROS),Interleukin 6(IL-6),Interleukin 1β(IL-1β)and Tumor necrosis factos-α(TNF-α)in skin tissues.RT-PCR and Western blot were employed to quantify the mRNA and protein contents of PI3K,AKT,and MMP-9.Results:Network pharmacology analysis predicts that AR-AAR may improve skin damage induced by UVR through the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.Histological staining shows that AR-AAR can significantly reduce inflammatory infiltration and fibrosis in damaged skin.Treatment with AR-AAR(2:1)significantly reduced the expression levels of IL-1β,IL-6,TNF-αand ROS in UVR-damaged rat skin. After treatment with AR-AAR(2:1),not only did the relative mRNA expression levels of PI3K and AKT and the protein expression levels of PI3K,AKT,P-PI3K,and P-AKT increase, but the mRNA and protein expression levels of MMP-9 decreased. Conclusion:The study indicate that the AR-AAR combination and its active components may mitigate UVR skin damage by modulating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. 展开更多

Drilling and blasting tunneling is a cyclic process in which tunnel rock undergoes repeated blast loading, affecting its dynamic characteristics, energy evolution, and damage progression. To explore the dynamic mechanical properties and damage mechanisms of carbonaceous slate under cyclic impact loads of varying intensities, cyclic dynamic tests are conducted using a triaxial split Hopkinson pressure bar. This study analyzes the stress-strain relationship, energy damage evolution, and macro-to-micro failure characteristics. The results show that peak stress and strain are significantly influenced by impact intensity and the number of impacts. The initial dynamic stress is positively correlated with the impact intensity, but with more impact, the dynamic stress decreases while the peak strain increases.Energy evolution follows a pattern of"slow growthfluctuating growthrapid growth,"with the crack initiation stress and its proportion decreasing.CT and SEM analyses reveal that as the impact intensity increases, failure becomes more chaotic, the fracture volume increases, and the fracture mode shifts from interlayer and intergranular to through-layer and trans-granular fractures. These findings provide an experimental basis for soft rock tunnel stability analysis. 展开更多

Hydraulic asphalt concrete(HAC)has been increasingly employed as an appropriate impervious structure in hydraulic and hydropower engineering. However, asphalt mortar, usually seen as the matrix of HAC composite,is particularly prone to damage under combined stress and seepage interactions, and the mesoscale investigations on the damage-seepage coupling behavior of HAC under complex stress states remain limited. This research develops a numerical three-dimensional mesoscale model composed of asphalt mortar and polyhedral aggregate to investigate the stress-damage-seepage coupling behavior in HAC.In this model, asphalt mortar yields the viscoelastic continuum damage law and aggregate obeys the Mazars’elastic-brittle damage law;simultaneously, the effective permeability coefficient of asphalt mortar is assumed to follow an exponential function of damage. The predicted deviatoric stress-strain and hydraulic gradient-seepage curves both are in good agreement with the reported experimental results, which shows the proposed model is valid and reasonable. The simulated results indicate that the damaged asphalt mortar can induce localized areas of high permeability, which in turn affects the overall impervious performance of HAC. 展开更多

Investigating the damage evolution of surrounding rock under thermal shock cycles is crucial for ensuring the stability of engineering rock masses. This study performed Brazilian splitting tests on granite specimens under varying temperature and cycle conditions, employing acoustic emission monitoring, digital image correlation, and three-dimensional scanning technology.A systematic analysis was conducted on the patterns of damage evolution, failure precursor, and response mechanisms under combined thermal and cyclic loading.Experimental results show that both P-wave velocity and tensile strength degrade significantly with increasing temperature and cycle count, with temperature having a more pronounced effect than cycle count.Notably, damage evolution exhibits a dual-threshold behavior in which degradation accelerates markedly above 400℃ and stabilizes after 5 thermal cycles.Fracture surfaces evolve from initially planar to rugged morphologies, with peak-valley height differences at 600℃ being approximately three times greater than those at 200℃.Furthermore,based on acoustic emission energy entropy analysis,we introduce a novel failure precursor indicator where the sustained increase and critical surge in average entropy serve as reliable early-warning signals for impending rock failure. These findings establish a solid theoretical basis and practical methodology for damage assessment and instability early-warning systems in high-temperature rock engineering. 展开更多

Rock damage significantly affects coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical(THM)behavior in deep geothermal exploitation through changing thermal and hydrological properties of rocks. For this,a thermo-hydro-mechanical-damage(THMD)coupled model was developed to describe the coupling between rock damage and mechanical, fluid flow and heat transfer fields. The model considers rock heterogeneity, and incorporates the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and the maximum tensile stress criterion to evaluate shear and tensile damage. This numerical modeling methodology was first verified against analytical solutions and experimental results, and was then used to simulate the THMD coupling behavior in deep geothermal exploitation.A coupled numerical model was set up to simulate the geothermal fluids extraction and re-injection process in a reservoir at 1 km depth over a 7-year period.Rock damage was found to accelerate the propagation of cold fronts away from the injection well, and have a distinct effect on the performance of geothermal exploitation. When the rock damage was considered, the field injectivity increases by 8.4 times, the range of cooled regions increases by 18.6 times, and the vertical deformation changes by 1.2 times after 7 years of geothermal operations, compared to the scenario where it was not considered.Parametric studies have suggested that thermal contraction dominates the rock damage evolution, and that thermal-induced rock damage only occurs at a sufficiently large temperature difference between fluids injected and the reservoir. This work underscores the importance of accurately accounting for the damage effect on reservoir response during fluid injection activities that cause significant cooling of reservoir rocks. 展开更多

Large-scale geological energy storage plays a crucial role in balancing the intermittency of renewable energy. As an energy storage medium, soaked sandstone has a wide range of applications in geological energy storage.Understanding the damage characteristics in soaked sandstones is essential for ensuring the stability and longevity of these energy storage systems. This study involved multi-stage cyclic loading tests conducted on soaked sandstone to explore the damage evolution throughout the loading process. The findingsreveal several important insights:(1)The plastic hysteresis loops observed during multi-stage cyclic loading evolved from dense to sparse. An increase in stress level led to greater damage in the rock,as evidenced by an increase in accumulated peak/plastic strains.(2)Energy density and stress level are related by quadratic polynomial relationships. The elastic and dissipated energy densities are related by a linear law.The average energy storage coefficientdecreased by up to 24.1%with increasing stress amplitude, reflectingchanges in energy dynamics within the samples.(3)AE counts, amplitude, and frequency provided critical insights into rock damage and fracture patterns. The greater the loading rate and stress amplitude, the lower the proportion of high-amplitude,high-peak frequency, and shear-type fractures.Increasing stress amplitude caused a maximum 16.63%reduction in the AE bvalue, indicating shifts in fracture behavior under varying stress conditions.(4)The increase in loading rate and stress amplitude promotes the transformation of micropores and mesopores to macropores/microcracks.(5)Damage variables, definedin terms of cumulative dissipation energy, aligned closely with the fatigue damage model under multi-stage cyclic loading.Accelerated damage primarily occurred during the finalstages of fatigue loading, highlighting critical periods in the degradation of soaked sandstones. This study can offer guidance for designing operational parameters for energy storage geological bodies dominated by soaked sandstones. 展开更多

Reservoir-induced landslides in China's Three Gorges Reservoir area are prone to tensile cracks due to the influenceof their own weight and fluctuationsin water levels. The presence of cracks indicates that the tensile stress in the area has exceeded the tensile strength of the soil, leading to local instability. To explore the impact of tensile failure behavior on the stability and failure modes of reservoir landslides, the Huangtupo Riverside Slump#1 is taken as a case study.By considering local tensile failure, potential tensile cracks are incorporated into the analysis via the limit equilibrium method and reliability theory. The reliability of landslides under different tensile failure scenarios is quantified.Strain-softening characteristics of the soil are combined to further analyze the failure transmission path of the landslide. Finally, these potential failure modes were validated through physical model tests. The results show that cracks developing at rear positions reduce the stability of the slope and increase the probability of instability.During the destruction process, retrogressive failures with multiple sliding surfaces are likely to occur. However, tensile failure at the forefront reduces the likelihood of an individual slide mass descending.Progressive failure results in both regular and skip transmission patterns.Additionally, cracks and water level changes can also lead to shifts in the positions of the most dangerous blocks. Therefore,in practical landslide analysis and prevention,it is necessary to consider local tensile damage and identify potential tensile crack locations in advance to optimize prevention measures and accurately evaluate landslide risk. 展开更多

This study investigated the effects of periodic high-frequency stress disturbances on the creep behavior of sandstone and analyzed the microstructural changes using nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)technology.High-frequency disturbance creep experiments were conducted on sandstone under different disturbance frequencies, disturbance cycles and loading stresses, and the following findings were obtained.Firstly, with the increase of loading stress and disturbance cycles, the total porosity increments, and damage value of sandstone increase, while the fractal dimension of sandstone pore structure presents the opposite trend.Secondly, during the disturbance creep process, the volumes of all three types of pores increase, but the proportion of micropores(T_(2)<10 ms)decreases, while the proportion of mesopores(10 ms<T_(2)<100 ms)and macropores(T_(2)>100 ms)increases.Thirdly, the fractal dimension difference has a good linear relationship with the damage, strain and porosity increment of sandstone during the disturbance creep process. Finally, the higher the disturbance frequency, the smaller the creep strain and creep strain rate during the steady-state creep stage. The study offers valuable theoretical insights for understanding rock creep behavior in complex stress environments. 展开更多

We present a novel approach for calculating the energy budget components during the progressive failure process in cohesive-frictional geomaterials. The energy supplied through external loading can be either stored as elastic strain energy and plastic energy storage or dissipated through damage growth and irreversible plastic deformation mechanisms.Analytical functions describing energy budget components are derived based on a thermodynamic formulation in geomaterials fracture. The thermodynamically consistent derivation leads to a non-local ductile damage model, which is solved numerically in a non-linear finite element framework. The proposed model captures geomaterial fractures in three benchmark examples, including tensile and biaxial-compressive shear scenarios and slope stability analysis. The aspects of shear fracture propagation and energy budget mechanisms are elaborately investigated, considering different material properties and stochastic distributions. The numerical results are validated against existing experimental data and other analytical methods. The model provides a physics-based understanding of energy budget in geomaterials fracture, leading to advances in ground improvement and other geotechnical supporting systems. 展开更多

Freezing and thawing processes play a crucial role in causing significant deformation and damage to layered soft rocks in cold region due to daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations. However, the frost heave mechanism of the rocks and their mechanical behaviors at the meso-scale still require further investigations. For this,we focused on carbonaceous slate reported in a high-altitude cold region,in terms of mineral composition, content, and microstructure. The strength and failure of mineral grain(MG)interfaces are studied using three-point-bending tests,in order to explore the evolution of mode I fracture toughness and tensile strength with the Dugdale-Barenblatt model and the Weibull distribution model. The results indicate that the damage of slate involves the initiation and propagation of microfracture networks at clay MG interfaces(bedding planes),driven by frost heave pressure at macroscopic and microscopic scales. This process causes the detachment of some MGs,resulting in fracture surfaces with a distinctive pulled-off planar structure. The hydrophilicity of clay MGs,interfacial strengths, and microfracture structures contribute to the freeze-thaw damage. As the number of freeze-thaw cycles increases, the effective area per unit decreases, leading to an exponentially decreasing in mode I fracture toughness and tensile strength at MG interfaces.Approximately 67%strength degradation occurs after 14 freeze-thaw cycles. This provides theoretical basis and experimental methods for better understanding the damage and deterioration behaviors of layered soft rocks in cold region under natural freeze-thaw cycles. 展开更多

The damage evolution of polycrystalline Al with helium(He)bubbles under strongly decaying shock waves is studied by molecular dynamics simulations.A new damage region is observed near the loading side of the sample, and the evolution characteristics and underlying mechanisms are elucidated. The development of damage in the new damage region begins after complete unloading of the incident shock wave and is further enhanced when the tensile stress arrives later. The damage evolution is completely controlled by the expansion-merging of He bubbles, without nucleation–growth of voids. This new damage region can be divided into two sections, each of which exhibits a unique dominant mechanism. The damage in the section closer to the loading side is due to the reverse velocity gradient formed after complete unloading of the incident shock wave, depending on the rate of decrease and the amplitude of the initial peak pressure.A high initial peak pressure that can lead to melting of material near the loading side is a necessary condition for the formation of the new damage region, since a significant reverse velocity gradient can only be established if melting occurs. The dominant mechanism in the section distant from the loading side is the action of tensile stress, associated with the profile of the incident shock wave upon reaching the free surface, which determines the material phase near the free surface. Moreover, the presence of He bubbles is another critical factor for formation of the new damage region, which does not occur in pure Al samples. 展开更多

Extensive engineering experience and research findings suggest that rock mass instability is typically attributed to human engineering activities and natural disturbances, resulting in general dynamic mechanical properties. This is attributed to external interference resulting from the extensive use of the mechanical and blasting techniques necessary for mineral extraction.Quantifying the impact of dynamic disturbances on rock deformation behavior is essential for comprehending the long-term response of surrounding rock during excavation. This study placed the rock to sustained pressure and investigated the impact of varying hammer heights and dry and wet(W-D)damage on its shear failure behavior. This study investigated the fatigue disturbance studies on W-D damaged sandstone samples via W-D equipment,a disturbance creep device, digital image correlation(DIC),and acoustic emission(AE)technology. The experimental findings suggest that acoustic emission sensors can be utilized to quantify the internal damage of rock samples during cyclic impact, whereas DIC technology(optical measurement)is capable of capturing the surface crack propagation of samples.Under repeated impact and the combined action of W-D conditions, the bearing capacity of sandstone decreases, whereas the deformation capacity increases.Furthermore, the W-D cycles and impact strength are inversely related to the fatigue life. The intensity of W-D damage and disturbances further accelerates the development and propagation of cracks under cyclic disturbances. The research results are of preventive significance to ensure the safety and sustainable development of engineering construction. 展开更多

During deep coal mining,an instability failure of coal usually occurs under the combined effect of initial damage and triaxial cyclic loading and unloading(TCLU).Therefore, this study investigated the impact of initial damage on mechanical behavior and acoustic emission(AE)characteristics of coal under TCLU.Initial damage variables(IDVs)of coal specimens were quantified using preloading, followed by TCLU experiments to assess the deformation, energy distribution, and fracture development. The results revealed that the increase in IDVs significantly reduced the structural integrity of coal specimens, increased the cumulative irreversible strain, and enhanced the dissipated energy owing to microfracture expansion. Moreover,AE monitoring showed earlier activation of fractures and a higher occurrence of large-scale rupture events of coal specimens with high IDVs,which correlated with decreasing AE b values(reflecting the different scales of fracture within specimens)and increasing S values(reflecting the AE activity within specimens).Additionally, computed tomography analysis revealed intensified fracture networks and increasing three-dimensional fractal dimensions of coal specimens with higher IDVs.Finally, the coupling effect of TCLU and initial damage on the weakening mechanism of coal was investigated.Initial damage significantly reduced the structural integrity of coal by increasing the number of weak planes within coal specimens, contributing to the earlier activation and rapid expansion of fractures at low stress levels under TCLU and eventually accelerating the weakening process of coal. This study provides a scientific basis and theoretical support for the prevention and control of dynamic disasters in deep coal mining. 展开更多

Retinal ganglion cells are the bridging neurons between the eye and the central nervous system, transmitting visual signals to the brain. The injury and loss of retinal ganglion cells are the primary pathological changes in several retinal degenerative diseases, including glaucoma, ischemic optic neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, and optic neuritis. In mammals, injured retinal ganglion cells lack regenerative capacity and undergo apoptotic cell death within a few days of injury.Additionally, these cells exhibit limited regenerative ability, ultimately contributing to vision impairment and potentially leading to blindness.Currently, the only effective clinical treatment for glaucoma is to prevent vision loss by lowering intraocular pressure through medications or surgery;however, this approach cannot halt the effect of retinal ganglion cell loss on visual function. This review comprehensively investigates the mechanisms underlying retinal ganglion cell degeneration in retinal degenerative diseases and further explores the current status and potential of cell replacement therapy for regenerating retinal ganglion cells. As our understanding of the complex processes involved in retinal ganglion cell degeneration deepens,we can explore new treatment strategies, such as cell transplantation, which may offer more effective ways to mitigate the effect of retinal degenerative diseases on vision. 展开更多

The penetration-deflagration coupling damage performance of rod-like reactive shaped charge pene-trator(RRSCP)impacting thick steel plates is investigated by theoretical analysis and experiments.A penetration-deflagration coupling damage model is developed to predict the penetration depth and cratering diameter.Four type of aluminum-polytetrafluoroethylene-copper(Al-PTFE-Cu)reactive liners with densities of 2.3,2.7,3.5,and 4.5 g·cm^(-3) are selected to conduct the penetration experiments. The comparison results show that model predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data.By comparing the penetration depth and cratering diameter in the inert penetration mode and the penetration-deflagration coupling mode, the influence mechanism that the penetration-induced chemical response is unfavorable to penetration but has an enhanced cratering effect is revealed. From the formation characteristics, penetration effect and penetration-induced chemical reaction be-haviors,the influence of reactive liner density on the penetration-deflagration performance is further analyzed. The results show that increasing the density of reactive liner significantly increases both the kinetic energy and length of the reactive penetrator, meanwhile effectively reduces the weakened effect of penetration-induced chemical response, resulting in an enhanced penetration capability. However, due to the decreased diameter and potential energy content of reactive penetrator, the cratering capa-bility is weakened significantly. 展开更多
