To ensure the operational safety of railways in the landslide-prone areas of mountainous regions,a large-scale model test and numerical simulation were conducted to study the bending moment distribution, internal force distribution, deformation development, and crack propagation characteristics of a framed anti-sliding structure(FAS)under landslide thrust up to the point of failure. Results show that the maximum bending moment and its increase rate in the fore pile are greater than those in the rear pile, with the maximum bending moment of the fore pile approximately 1.1 times that of the rear pile. When the FAS fails, the displacement at the top of the fore pile is significantly greater, about 1.27 times that of the rear pile in the experiment.Major cracks develop at locations corresponding to the peak bending moments.Small transverse cracks initially appear on the upper surface at the intersection between the primary beam and rear pile and then spread to the side of the structure. At the failure stage, major cracks are observed at the pil-beam intersections and near the anchor points.Strengthening flexural stiffness at intersections where major cracks occur can improve the overall thrust-deformation coordination of the FAS,thereby maximizing its performance. 展开更多

The acetylpolyamine oxidase(APAO),spermine oxidase(SMO),and spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase(SSAT)are pivotal enzymes in polyamine metabolism, exerting direct influence on polyamine homeostasis regulation.Dysfunctions in these enzymes are intricately linked to inflammatory diseases and cancers.Establishing their three-dimensional structures is essential for exploring enzymatic catalytic mechanisms and designing inhibitors at the atomic level. This article primarily assesses the precision of AlphaFold2 and molecular dynamics simulations in determining the three-dimensional structures of these enzymes, utilizing protein conformation rationality assessment, residue correlation matrix, and other techniques. This provides robust models for subsequent polyamine catabolic metabolism calculations and offers valuable insights for modeling proteins that have yet to acquire crystal structures. 展开更多

Structure-type rockbursts frequently occur in deep tunnels, with structural planes and stress conditions being critical factors in their formation. In this study,we utilized specially developed analogous materials that exhibit the high brittleness and strength characteristics of deep hard rock to construct physical models representing different types of structural planes, including composite,exposed,non-exposed,and throughgoing structural planes.Physical simulation experiments were conducted on structuretype rockbursts in deep horseshoe-shaped tunnels, focusing on strain differentiation characteristics, critical triggering conditions, critical crack opening displacement, the incubation process, the reduction effects of structural planes on failure intensity, and formation mechanisms. These experiments were complemented by acoustic and optical monitoring,as well as discrete element numerical simulations,to provide a comprehensive analysis. The results revealed that the most significant strain heterogeneity in the surrounding rock occurs at the tip of the structural plane along the tunnel's minimum principal stress direction, driven by the combined effects of tensile and shear forces. We quantitatively determined the critical stress and strain conditions for structure-type rockbursts and evaluated the intensity of rockbursts induced by different structural planes using critical crack opening displacement(COD)values, the uniformity coefficient, and the curvature coefficient.Analysis of acoustic emission events, including frequency, amplitude, and b-value,indicated that the macro-fracture process is governed by both the principal stress differential and the characteristics of the structural plane.Furthermore, using the bearing capacity reduction coefficient,we found that exposed structural planes have the most significant weakening effect on rock mass strength, followed by non-exposed and throughgoing structural planes. The analysis of average frequency(AF)and rise angle(RA)parameters revealed a close correlation between the failure modes of structure-type rockbursts, the rock mass structure, and the stress levels. These findings provide critical theoretical support for the prediction and prevention of structure-type rockburst disasters. 展开更多

The eddies with diameters of 50–200 km can greatly impact the transport of heat, momentum, and tracers. A high-resolution wave-tide-circulation coupled model was developed to simulate the meso-scale eddy in the SCS in this study. The aim of this study is to examine the model ability to simulate the meso-scale eddy in the SCS without data assimilations The simulated Sea Surface Height(SSH) anomalies agree with the observed the AVISO SSH anomalies well. The simulated subsurface temperature profiles agree with the CTD observation data from the ROSE(Responses of Marine Hazards to climate change in the Western Pacific) project. The simulated upper-ocean currents also agree with the main circulation based on observations. A warm eddy is identified in winter in the northern SCS. The position and domain of the simulated eddy are confirmed by the observed sea surface height data from the AVISO. The result shows that the model has the ability to simulate the meso-scale eddy in the SCS without data assimilation. The three-dimensional structure of the meso-scale eddy in the SCS is analyzed using the model result. It is found that the eddy center is tilted vertically, which agrees with the observation. It is also found that the velocity center of the eddy does not coincide with the temperature center of the eddy. The result shows that the model has the ability to simulate the meso-scale eddy in the SCS without data assimilations. Further study on the forming mechanism and the three-dimensional structure of the meso-scale eddies will be carried out using the model result and cruise observation data in the near future. 展开更多

Tree plantations are globally significant, and therefore,growth-related challenges cannot be ignored.Canopy structure and light environment influence the growth of plantations, but the precise relationship remains unclear. We selected seven-year-old poplar plantations of varying cultivars planted various densities and measured their growth, canopy structure, and light environment. The findings indicate that poplar plantations of different cultivars and at different planting densities showed variations in leaf area index(LAI),average leaf angle(ALA),crown length(CL),length ratio(CLR),roundness(CR)and surface area(CSA),which directly or indirectly affect growth, resulting in disparities in their growing conditions.Crown roundness directly impacted growth, while LAI,CLR and ALA influenced growth indirectly by affecting intercellular carbon dioxide concentration.LAI and CLR had a positive effect;ALA had a negative one.Crown length and surface area directly and indirectly influenced growth by affecting photo synthetically active radiation and net photo synthetic rate, with direct impacts being more pronounced. This research has clarified the regulatory role of canopy structure in plantations growth, providing valuable insights for developing more effective management strategies. 展开更多

The bolted flange structure finds significant applications in fields such as aerospace, shipbuilding, and pipeline transportation. The investigation of its dynamic characteristics has consistently been a focal point for researchers;however, there remains a deficiency in the development of robust analytical models. This paper introduces a novel analytical model based on the finite element methods and the Timoshenko beam theory to accurately simulate the bolted flange structure. The stiffness, mass, damping, and inertia matrices of the rotor system are individually derived, and the dynamic equation is subsequently formulated. The model’s validity and accuracy are validated through both the experimental testing and the finite element analysis. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between the external loads and the influence of the geometric configuration on the stiffness and contact behavior of the bolted flange structure, thereby enabling a thorough and precise prediction of the static and dynamic load transfer pathways,as well as the distribution of vibrational energy within the structure, while also facilitating the incorporation of friction and slip effects.Simultaneously, this work provides a foundational framework for the optimization design of bolted flange structures, addressing the factors such as the number, size, and geometric distribution of bolts. 展开更多

Located at the northwest continental slope of the South China Sea, the Qiongdongnan Basin bears valley-shaped bathymetry deepening toward east. It is separated from the Yinggehai Basin through NW-trending Indo-China-Red River shear zone, and connected with NW subsea basin through the Xisha Trough. Along with the rapid progress of the deepwater exploration, large amounts of high resolution geophysical and geological data were accumulated. Scientific researches about deepwater basins kept revealing brand new tectonic and sedimentary discoveries. In order to summarize the structural features and main controlling factors of the deepwater Qiongdongnan Basin, a series of researches on basin architecture, fault activities, tectonic deformation and evolution were carried out. In reference to analogue modeling experiments, a tectonic situation and a basin formation mechanism were discussed. The researches indicate that:the northern boundary of the Qiongdongnan Basin is strongly controlled by No. 2 fault. The overlapping control of two stress fields from the east and the west made the central depression zone extremely thinned. Combined with the changed stress field, the segmentation of a preexisting weakness zone made the sags in the east experiencing different rifting histories from the west ones. The NE-trending west segment of the Qiongdongnan Basin experienced strong rifting during Eocene, while the roughly EW-trending sags in the east segment show strong rifting during late Eocene and early Oligocene. Local structures such as NW-trending basal fault and inherited uplifts controlled the lateral segmentation. So first order factors such as regional stress field and preexisting weakness zone controlled the basin zonation, while the second order factors determined the segmentation from east to west. 展开更多

Implementation of an opposing jet in design of a hypersonic blunt body significantly modifies the external flowfield and yields a considerable reduction in the aerodynamic drag. This study aims to investigate the effects of flowfield modeling parameters of injection and freestream on the flow structure and aerodynamics of a blunt body with an opposing jet in hypersonic flow.Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS)equations with a Shear Stress Transport(SST)turbulence model are employed to simulate the intricate jet flow interaction.Through utilizing a Non-Intrusive Polynomial Chaos(NIPC)method to construct surrogates,a functional relation is established between input modeling parameters and output flowfield and aerodynamic quantities in concern.Sobol indices in sensitivity analysis are introduced to represent the relative contribution of each parameter. It is found that variations in modeling parameters produce large variations in the flow structure and aerodynamics. The jet-to-freestream total-pressure ratio, jet Mach number, and freestream Mach number are the major contributors to variation in surface pressure, demonstrating an evident location-dependent behavior. The penetration length of injection, reattachment angle of the shear layer, and aerodynamic drag are also most sensitive to the three crucial parameters above. In comparison, the contributions of freestream temperature, freestream density, and jet total temperature are nearly negligible. 展开更多

Despite the great efforts dedicated to metallic glasses (MGs), their structure still remains a mystery to be understood. With comparison to the existing mJciomechanical models, such as the free-volume and shear transformation zone (STZ) models, we first discuss in this article our recently proposed 'core-shell' model, which contains a solid-like matrix and liquid-like inclusions. This serves as the theoretical basis to understand the structural heterogeneity in MGs in our analytical framework. After that, a scanning ultrafast nanoindentation technique is used to map out the structure heterogeneity in a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG). With these ongoing research efforts, we hope that more research work could be stimulated in the pursuit of the structure-property relation in MGs. 展开更多

Maglev trains experience significant aerodynamic effects when passing through tunnels.A moving model test was conducted to explore the practical effects of speed reduction and entrance buffer structures on mitigating tunnel/maglev aerodynamic effects. It is found that both have an overall positive effect on mitigating the aerodynamic environment inside and outside the tunnel.Trains operating at 200 km/h show a 49.8%decrease in peak-to-peak pressure and a 50.7%decrease in transient pressure instability on inner walls compared to those at 280 km/h.Lower speeds resulted in a 65.6%decrease in amplitude and a 24.5%decrease in decay rate, both of which are parameters for exponential fittings of pressure peaks that decay naturally after the train leaves. The buffer structures result in a reduction of up to 25.7%in the maximum positive pressure and a 29.0%decrease in transient pressure instability.Additionally,a reduction in amplitude of up to 21.2%and a 32.2%increase in decay rate were observed with the use of buffer structures.Nevertheless,it is difficult to conclude direct correlations between the maximum pressure,peak-to-peak values, etc.,and the speeds or buffer structures due to the complex wave propagation in tunnels. However, speed reduction and buffer structures are proven to be effective in reducing the micro-pressure wave levels with a simpler monotonic relationship. 展开更多

Porosity is an important attribute for evaluating the petrophysical properties of reservoirs, and has guiding significance for the exploration and development of oil and gas. The seismic inversion is a key method for comprehensively obtaining the porosity. Deep learning methods provide an intelligent approach to suppress the ambiguity of the conventional inversion method. However, under the trace-bytrace inversion strategy, there is a lack of constraints from geological structural information, resulting in poor lateral continuity of prediction results. In addition, the heterogeneity and the sedimentary variability of subsurface media also lead to uncertainty in intelligent prediction. To achieve fine prediction of porosity, we consider the lateral continuity and variability and propose an improved structural modeling deep learning porosity prediction method. First, we combine well data, waveform attributes, and structural information as constraints to model geophysical parameters, constructing a high-quality training dataset with sedimentary facies-controlled significance. Subsequently, we introduce a gated axial attention mechanism to enhance the features of dataset and design a bidirectional closed-loop network system constrained by inversion and forward processes. The constraint coefficient is adaptively adjusted by the petrophysical information contained between the porosity and impedance in the study area. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the adaptive coefficient through numerical experiments. Finally, we compare the performance differences between the proposed method and conventional deep learning methods using data from two study areas. The proposed method achieves better consistency with the logging porosity, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed method. 展开更多

A meso-scale truss network model was developed to predict chloride diffusion in concrete. The model regards concrete as a three-phase composite of mortar matrix, coarse aggregates, and the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the mortar matrix and the aggregates. The diffusion coefficient of chloride in the mortar and the ITZ can be analytically determined with only the water-to-cement ratio and volume fraction of fine aggregates. Fick's second law of diffusion was used as the governing equation for chloride diffusion in a homogenous medium (e.g., mortar); it was discretized and applied to the truss network model. The solution procedure of the truss network model based on the diffusion law and the meso-scale composite structure of concrete is outlined. Additionally, the dependence of the diffusion coefficient of chloride in the mortar and the ITZ on exposure duration and temperature is taken into account to illustrate their effect on chloride diffusion coefficient. The numerical results show that the exposure duration and environmental temperature play important roles in the diffusion rate of chloride ions in concrete. It is also concluded that the meso-scale truss network model can be applied to chloride transport analysis of damaged (or cracked) concrete. 展开更多

Beach groynes are structures for erosion protection along sandy coasts near inlets and can reduce the coastal erosion substantially, but open groynes cannot stop erosion completely because sand can be removed from the groyne compartments by cross-shore processes.Beach groynes should be designed with sufficient bypassing of sand to minimise erosion.Regular beach maintenance is required to keep a sufficient beach width for recreational purposes. The effectiveness of groyne compartments can be significantly improved by using T-head groynes or by using a submerged sill or breakwater in between the groynes. An economic evaluation shows that the beach maintenance costs over 50 years may be substantially higher than the construction costs of a submerged breakwater. An important parameter to be studied is the longshore transport, which requires detailed information of the wave climate, preferably based on measured data(offshore buoys)in combination with deep water wave modelling.Various models have been used to determine the net longshore sand transport and coastline changes. The design of groynes to reduce coastal erosion is illustrated by three field cases(Atlantic coast near Soulac,France;Lagos coast,Nigeria and Black Sea coast,Romania). These example cases show that beach groynes are effective structures, but sufficient bypassing of longshore sand transport is essential to minimise erosion.Regular beach fills in the groyne compartments may be required at high-energy(exposed)coasts.A submerged or emerged breakwater can be built between the groynes to protect the beach in the groyne compartments against erosion by cross-shore processes. 展开更多

Accurate prediction of coal reservoir permeability is crucial for engineering applications, including coal mining, coalbed methane(CBM)extraction, and carbon storage in deep unmineable coal seams.Owing to the inherent heterogeneity and complex internal structure of coal,a well-established method for predicting permeability based on microscopic fracture structures remains elusive. This paper presents a novel integrated approach that leverages the intrinsic relationship between microscopic fracture structure and permeability to construct a predictive model for coal permeability. The proposed framework encompasses data generation through the integration of three-dimensional(3D)digital core analysis and numerical simulations, followed by data-driven modeling via machine learning(ML)techniques.Key data-driven strategies, including feature selection and hyperparameter tuning, are employed to improve model performance. We propose and evaluate twelve data-driven models, including multilayer perceptron(MLP),random forest(RF),and hybrid methods. The results demonstrate that the ML model based on the RF algorithm achieves the highest accuracy and best generalization capability in predicting permeability. This method enables rapid estimation of coal permeability by inputting two-dimensional(2D)computed tomography images or parameters of the microscopic fracture structure, thereby providing an accurate and efficient means of permeability prediction. 展开更多

Based on a centrifuge model test and distinct element method(DEM), this study provides new insights into the uplift response of a shallow-buried structure and the liquefaction mechanism for saturated sand around the structure under seismic action. In the centrifuge test, a high-speed microscopic camera was installed in the structure model, by which the movements of particles around the structure were monitored. Then, a two-dimensional digital image processing technology was used to analyze the microstructure of saturated sand during the shaking event. Herein, a numerical simulation of the centrifuge experiment was conducted using a two-phase(solid and fl uid) fully coupled distinct element code. This code incorporates a particle-fl uid coupling model by means of a "fi xed coarse-grid" fl uid scheme in PFC3D(Particle Flow Code in Three Dimensions), with the modeling parameters partially calibrated based on earlier studies. The physical and numerical models both indicate the uplifts of the shallow-buried structure and the sharp rise in excess pore pressure. The corresponding micro-scale responses and explanations are provided. Overall, the uplift response of an underground structure and the occurrence of liquefaction in saturated sand are predicted successfully by DEM modeling. However, the dynamic responses during the shaking cannot be modeled accurately due to the restricted computer power. 展开更多

To mill fine and well-defined micro-dimpled structures,a machining manner of spiral trajectory tool reciprocating motion, where the tool repeats the process of‘feed milling–retract–cutting feed–feed milling again’along the spiral trajectory, was proposed. From the kinematics analysis,it is found that the machining quality of micro-dimpled structures is highly dependent on the machining trajectory using spiral trajectory tool reciprocating motion. To reveal this causation, simulation modelling and experimental studies were carried out.A simulation model was developed to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the influence of the trajectory discretization strategies(constant-angle and constant-arc length)and parameters(discrete angle, discrete arc length, and pitch)on surface texture and residual height of micro-dimpled structures.Subsequently,micro-dimpled structures were milled under different trajectory discretization strategies and parameters with spiral trajectory tool reciprocating motion.A comprehensive comparison between the milled results and simulation analysis was made based on geometry accuracy, surface morphology and surface roughness of milled dimples.Meanwhile, the errors and factors affecting the above three aspects were analyzed. The results demonstrate both the feasibility of the established simulation model and the machining capability of this machining way in milling high-quality micro-dimpled structures.Spiral trajectory tool reciprocating motion provides a new machining way for milling micro-dimpled structures and micro-dimpled functional surfaces. And an appropriate machining trajectory can be generated based on the optimized trajectory parameters, thus contributing to the improvement of machining quality and efficiency. 展开更多

This paper describes the interaction between deep-seated landslides and man-made structures such as dams, penstocks, viaducts, and tunnels. Selected case studies are reported first with the intent to gain insights into the complexities associated with the interaction of these structures with deep-seated landslides(generally referred to as deep-seated gravity slope deformations, DSGSDs). The main features, which characterize these landslides, are mentioned together with the interaction problems encountered in each case. Given the main objective of this paper, the numerical modeling methods adopted are outlined as means for increase in the understanding of the interaction problems being investigated. With the above in mind, the attention moves to an important and unique case history dealing with the interaction of a large-size twin-tunnel excavated with an earth pressure balance(EPB)tunnel boring machine(TBM) and a deep-seated landslide, which was reactivated due to the stress changes induced by tunnel excavation in landslide shear zone. The geological and geotechnical conditions are described together with the available monitoring data on the landslide movements, based on the advanced and conventional monitoring tools used. Numerical modeling is illustrated as an aid to back-analyze the monitored surface and subsurface deformations and to assist in finding the appropriate engineering solution for putting the tunnel into service and as a follow-up means for future understanding and control of the interaction problems. The simulation is based on a novel time-dependent model representing the landslide behavior. 展开更多

The paper investigated the equivalent continuum modeling of beam-like repetitive truss structures considering the flexibility of joints, which models the contact between the truss member and joint by spring-damper with six directional stiffnesses and dampings.Firstly,a two-node hybrid joint-beam element was derived for modeling the truss member with flexible end joints, and a condensed model for the repeating element with flexible joints was obtained. Then, the energy equivalence method was adopted to equivalently model the truss structure with flexible joints and material damping as a spatial viscoelastic anisotropic beam model.Afterwards, the equations of motion for the equivalent beam model were derived and solved analytically in the frequency domain. In the numerical studies, the correctness of the presented method was verified by comparisons of the natural frequencies and frequency responses evaluated by the equivalent beam model with the results of the finite element method model. 展开更多

For the coach industry, rapid modeling and efficient optimization methods are desirable for structure modeling and optimization based on simplified structures, especially for use early in the concept phase and with capabilities of accurately expressing the mechanical properties of structure and with flexible section forms. However, the present dimension-based methods cannot easily meet these requirements. To achieve these goals, the property-based modeling(PBM)beam modeling method is studied based on the PBM theory and in conjunction with the characteristics of coach structure of taking beam as the main component. For a beam component of concrete length, its mechanical characteristics are primarily affected by the section properties.Four section parameters are adopted to describe the mechanical properties of a beam, including the section area, the principal moments of inertia about the two principal axles, and the torsion constant of the section.Based on the equivalent stiffness strategy, expressions for the above section parameters are derived, and the PBM beam element is implemented in HyperMesh software.A case is realized using this method,in which the structure of a passenger coach is simplified. The model precision is validated by comparing the basic performance of the total structure with that of the original structure, including the bending and torsion stiffness and the first-order bending and torsional modal frequencies.Sensitivity analysis is conducted to choose design variables. The optimal Latin hypercube experiment design is adopted to sample the test points, and polynomial response surfaces are used to fit these points. To improve the bending and torsion stiffness and the first-order torsional frequency and taking the allowable maximum stresses of the braking and left turning conditions as constraints, the multi-objective optimization of the structure is conducted using the NSGA-II genetic algorithm on the ISIGHT platform. The result of the Pareto solution set is acquired, and the selection strategy of the final solution is discussed. The case study demonstrates that the mechanical performances of the structure can be well-modeled and simulated by PBM beam.Because of the merits of fewer parameters and convenience of use, this method is suitable to be applied in the concept stage.Another merit is that the optimization results are the requirements for the mechanical performance of the beam section instead of those of the shape and dimensions, bringing flexibility to the succeeding design. 展开更多
