The results show that delayed fracture resistance of boron containing steels is higher than that of conventional steel 60Si2MnA at the same strength level and it increases with the increase of boron eontent from 0. 000 5% to 0. 001 6%. The delayed fracture mode is mainly intergranular in the boron containing steels tempered at 350℃, which indicates that the addition of boron does not change the fracture character. However, the increase of boron content enlarges the size of the crack initia tion area. Further study of phase analysis indicates that most boron is in solid solution, and only a very small quantity of boron is in the M3 (C, B) phase.展开更多

The experimental results show that the shear strength of polyurethane adhesive in salt water is decreased more quickly than that in water. Na^+ and Cl^- ions could make the polyurethane adhesive age faster and the interface metal corrosion. The high temperature accelerates the diffusion of water molecule, Na^+ and Cl^- ions and the degradation of the giant molecule.展开更多

In this work, the effect of aluminium heat sink and varying cooling medium on the laser welding of duplex stainless steel (DSS) 2205 is studied. The 2 mm thick DSS sheets welded with pulsed Nd: YAG laser welding machine by varying the cooling medium (air and oil) and an aluminium plate used as a heat sink. The welded specimens tested for tensile strength, micro-hardness, distortion, microstructure and radiography analysis. The faster cooling rate in the oil quenching process enhances the ferrite percentage compared with air-cooled samples. But the faster cooling rate in oil quenching leads to more distortion and using aluminium as a heat sink influenced positively the distortion to a small extent. The lower cooling rate in air quenching leads to a higher tensile strength of the welded specimen. The objective of this work is to analyse experimentally the effect of cooling medium and heat sink in the mechanical and metallurgical properties of laser welded duplex stainless steel.展开更多

However, the engineering characteristics of structured soils are different from those of reconstituted soils in many aspects, especially in their strength properties, Thus, the influence of soil structure (bonding and fabric) on the mechanical properties of structured soils cannot be correctly described, By analyzing the breakage mechanism of natural soils, the structured soils can be conceptualized as binary medium materials consisting of bonded blocks and weakened bands. On this basis, a new strength criterion is pro- posed for structured soils, The expressions of the strength criterion on both meridian and deviator planes are given to describe the strength properties of structured soils on these planes. The proposed strength criterion is compared with available test data under conventional and true triaxial stress conditions in the literature. It is observed that the proposed strength criterion agrees well with the test data.展开更多

An ultrafine-grained micro-duplex structure consisting of alternating austenite and ferrite laths was de- veloped by austenite reverse transformation (ART) during intercritical annealing after forging and hot rolling. Ultra- high ductility with a total elongation higher than 30% was achieved in the temperature range from -196 ℃ to 200 ℃, and high impact toughness no less than 200 J at -40 ℃ was obtained. Based on the analysis of microstructure and mechanical properties, it was found that the enhanced ductility was determined by the phase transformation effect of austenite (TRIP effect), while the delayed ductile to brittle transition was controlled by austenite stability.展开更多

For building these models, training and testing using experimental results for 144 specimens produced with 16 different mixture proportions were conducted. The data used in the multilayer feed forward neural networks models and input variables of genetic programming models were arranged in a format of eight input parameters that cover the cement content, nanoparticle content, aggregate type, water content, the amount of superplasticizer, the type of curing medium, age of curing and number of testing try. According to these input parameters, in the neural networks and genetic programming models, the split tensile strength and percentage of water absorption values of concretes containing ZrO2 nanoparticles were predicted. The training and testing results in the neural network and genetic programming models have shown that two models have strong potential for predicting the split tensile strength and percentage of water absorption values of concretes containing ZrO2 nanoparticles. It has been found that neural network (NN) and gene expression programming (GEP) models will be valid within the ranges of variables. In neural networks model, as the training and testing ended when minimum error norm of network gained, the best results were obtained and in genetic programming model, when 4 genes were selected to construct the model, the best results were acquired. Although neural network have predicted better results, genetic programming is able to predict reasonable values with a simpler method rather than neural network.展开更多

The mechanical behavior of the samples was investigated using universal tensile testing machine for tensile test and Vickers pyramid method for hardness testing. The microstructure of the quenched samples was studied using optical microscope. The tensile strength and hardness values of the quenched samples were relatively higher than those of the ascast samples, suggesting improved mechanical properties. However, samples quenched in palm oil displayed better properties compared with that of water-quenched samples. This behavior was traced to the fact that the carbon particles in palm oil quenched samples were more uniform and evenly distributed, indicating the formation of more pearlite structure, than those quenched in water and the as-received samples.展开更多
